Tom Leadon is Bernie Leadon's brother. He wrote the song and Bernie thought it would sound good as an Eagles song. He presented it to Don Henley and Glenn. They liked the melody and general lyrical concept, but rewrote most of the lyrics, including changing "Springtime in Topanga Canyon" to "Springtime, the acacias are blooming."
