The nominations have just been announced for this year's CMA Awards:

"It's been more than 30 years since their last CMA Awards nomination for Vocal Group of the Year (1976, 1977), but the Eagles are back in the category in 2008." :yay:

The ceremony is Nov 12 at the Sommet Center in Nashville, where I saw them perform at the CMAs last year. That is the day aftet their last scheduled concert date in Tulsa. I wonder if they will come and/or perform this year, or who they will send as their representative?

Thanks DF - I totally agree with you that LROOE should have been nominated. I think this could be the year that our guys win. :yay: I'm also still anxiously awaiting to see if they will ever get inducted into the Country Music HOF.

How Long notwithstanding, I consider LROOE a rock album, not a country album.

I agree with you, Fp.

Yeah - I always thought LROOE was an uneasy fit for country. They decided it was more marketable to call it that, I guess. Genre classifications are easy to fudge because they are not clearly defined (sometimes I think the only thing that differentiates country from mainstream is the singer's accent). Still, I think very few people would listen to LROOE in full and come away calling it a country album.

TimothyBFan

Congrats to them  but I can't tell you how much I really dislike that. I'm with Soda -anyone listening to the WHOLE album can't consider it a country album. I know they have always been considered "a little bit country" and that country artist, for decades, have covered their music but I don't see them as a country act. I will admit, I am the farthest from a country music fan as you can get! I love southern rock tho-go figure?!? The Eagles will aways be my favorite ROCK band!

They are my favorite ROCK band too guys, but c'mon, they courted the country market & asked the country radio stations to play their songs, so I wish they had been nominated for the best album award.

LROOE may be off the Billboard chart but it is still in the top 20 in Country Music Magazine so I guess the country fans are still buying it. But it kind of makes you wonder how they know if the buyer is a rock fan or a country fan. lol:?:

Here's a little mention from today's Kansas City paper:

The Country Music Association Awards Show airs from 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Crossing over
Rock and pop stars are among those who have found a new country home:

•The Eagles: They have always lived along the country-rock border, especially early in their careers. But their most recent album, “Long Road Out of Eden,” was pushed hard and directly to country radio with great success. The video for “How Long” was named “Wide Open Country Video of the Year” at this year’s CMT Music Video Awards. The band was named country music vocal group of the year by the Academy of Country Music, and they are nominees for vocal group of the year at Wednesday’s Country Music Association’s award show. The band also will perform on the show. (The Eagles bring their Long Road Out of Eden Tour to the Sprint Center tonight.)

I thought I read that they had won the awards but for some reason they weren't presented during the televised part of the award show.
One year later and LROOE is still number 25 on the Country Music top 30 list, and the last People Country Music Special I bought they listed Please Come Home For Christmas by The Eagles as one of the top 25 Holiday songs. This Country Music award is not voted on by fans, it's voted by members of the CMA so if Irving has any pull The Eagles may out vote Rascal Flatts but I'm not holding my breath.

Maleah
11-09-2008, 04:29 PM
Hmm......well vocal group of the year is always televised because it's one of the big awards along with Male/Female Vocalist, New Artist, and Entertainer of the Year. I could always be wrong but I'm sure Rascal Flatts won the last time the boys were nominated and Allison Krauss/Robert Plant won the wide open video award. But like I said......I could always be wrong.

AzEaglesFan

CMT Video Award Show is a different show than the CMA award show. CMT is Country Music Television and is voted on by the fans. I can't remember seeing it. So you may be right. The ACM Awards, it does seem like it was Alison and Robert who won on one of those shows.

lol I am a big country music fan so I watch all the awards shows. I actually watched the CMT 2008 awards. Joe and Tim gave away an award and Allison and Mr. Plant definently won for wide open video. I even went and double checked to make sure. ;)

Also watched the ACM awards......which btw, Reba should be asked to host more often! She was great! I remember being very disappointed, even though I knew it was going to happen, when Rascal Flatts took the vocal group award over the Eagles.

I'm a fan of eighties/early nineties type country music like Alabama, Reba McEntire, Trisha Yearwood and George Strait (it's good he's still in the scene), but not so sure about the new crop. I can't even tell apart most of the young pretty blondes who are now so prevalent in a genre that didn't used to be about looks. There are a few I like such as Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, and the sweet-as-can-be Clay Walker, but in truth if it weren't for the Eagles I wouldn't be watching.

Steph, apparently the CMA awards are not being televised by the BBC this year. But Bob Harris will be presenting a round-up of the awards on Thursday 13 November, 7.00-8.00pm, on BBC Radio Two.

Better than nothing I suppose, but I'm disappointed we won't be able to watch tonight.

I've always loved watching the CMA awards. You can always count on me watching them, but, country music has changed so much in the past few years. It's all about those pretty belly buttons (as Don said a while back!) anymore. Now, if you aren't Taylor Swift or Carrie Underwood in the ladies categories or Kenny Chesney in the men's, you might as well forget it. I really like all of them, but country radio runs their songs into the ground and makes you nearly hate them.

I can't wait to see the guys there and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for them. I'm not very confident they'll win though.

I really doubt they'll do more than one song.

I can't believe all of the technical difficulties our TV (which is less than a year old) is having...I don't know if it is the telecast or our TV, actually. For the last 20 minutes or so, we were getting a big disconnect between the voices and the speakers' mouths, so that the sound came out and then the mouth moved a few seconds later. Now, we actually are having the screen go black for seconds at a time...and there still are 30 minutes left in the show...Aaarrgghh! I may only be able to hear the Eagles, and not see them! Or, if I'm lucky, I'll see their mouths move some time after they sing. ..:brickwall:

I didnt see many performances tonight that I thought were very good. Keith Urban's was good (and he is hot.. Im sorry.. he is!) and Carrie Underwood was excellent. So was the new guy Jason Aldean! I was very impressed with his performance.

The Eagles, as usual gave a superb performance, but was it my imagination (or the fact I was extremely tired) or did they slow it down a bit for the "country version"? Either way, they sounded and looked great, tho the sound was a bit off. They could of smiled more also. To d*mn bad that Rascal Flatt won over them tho. I didn't catch them in the audience, darn it! I thought I was keeping a pretty good eye on it also. It was well worth the wait of almost 3 hours to see them. Last year I didn't watch the whole thing, just flipped back and forth till I saw the Eagles.

Here is my take on my very first ever CMA show and really the first time I have ever seen most of these people. It wasn't awful!! I know that sounds bad but I really expected to hate it but I didn't. Believe me, I will not be turning on the local country station and listening but I could set thru that again. My favorite, other than our boys, was the opening number with Brad Paisley and Keith Urban. I told my husband I wasn't expecting it to be like that. I also enjoyed that group Lady something (can't remember) and enjoyed Kid Rock (don't tell my husband, because he hates that song!) and Darius Rucker. The song that Carrie Underwood sang and the one that Trace Adkins sang brought tears to my eyes. There were a few acts I could do without, Brooks and Dunn for one. Don't care much for twangy stuff. I have to admit, I didn't mind the stuff that rocked a bit. And one last thing, apparently there are no ugly people in country music! I have never seen more beautiful woman and good looking men on one show before!!

Thanks Soda for all the treats.

I'm getting used to them looking somber. That was my issue with the Chicago concert. Fortunately for me, they had all evening to get in a better mood, and they did. Last night they only had the one song. They certainly weren't the "life of the party", mood-wise. Maybe they were upset that they lost. ;)

I, too, enjoyed the show because it was less plain "country" and more "country-rock." And everyone did look fabulous. Carrie Underwood's dresses were gorgeous--the woman never has a bad moment. I really like Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland too, but that fringed number she wore--UGH.

Ok -I just watched the links Soda posted. I think I was so happy to finally have them come on last night that I thought they were great, but they really were a bunch of sour faced gentlemen last night. Wonder why! I refuse to believe it had anything to do with losing, it isn't like it's the first time and they had to expect it (tho it still ticks me off!!) I really do wonder if they are just getting a bit burned out. Play over the weekend, Tuesday Tulsa, off to Memphis, back to Missouri then to Dallas after 1 day off, 2 shows over the weekend..... That makes me tired and they have 15-16 years on me! Just a thought! Maybe they need more than a month of R & R, when they are still doing things, in between sets of shows.

Sour-faced indeed. Don look absolutely pained, although a couple times he almost mustered up some alternate facial expressions. At the end, their smiles looked so forced I was just shaking my head. They were getting a standing ovation, after all. Lighten up while you still can, guys! If you're not enjoying yourself, it's hard for the audience to.

Perhaps they did slow it down for the show, but I think it was more their lack of energy that made it seem to drag than a tempo change.

I'm not much of a country fan, but I did watch the last hour of the show when I realized the boys hadn't played yet. Compared to some of those acts, which were very animated, our boys seemed lethargic. You would think that they would want to appear the opposite, given the fact that they're in their sixties.

I dunno.. George Strait is at least 60 and he was pretty animated too. What I noticed was a lot of the acts that had big productions involved and those were the acts that bombed head first!

I've always liked George Strait - I especially find his song "Baby Blue" moving. I also thought Carrie Underwood's performance was powerful, although perhaps it was because it was introduced so movingly by the war widow, who said the song helped her deal with the loss of her husband. What greater compliment? To know your music means so much to people - that the path you've chosen for your life is making the world better my making individuals better? It's something our guys have mentioned meaning a lot to them, as I'm sure it does to all performers.

I'm not a huge fan of Rascal Flatts, though, and I'm beginning to resent the fact that they are getting award after award after award, every year. Enough already. Most of the people who got awards this year got them last year, too. How about some variety?

I agree that by no means was the show worthless except for the fact that the Eagles were performing. As Willie said, even if you're not a fan of the country twang, there were some bordering-on-rock songs that worked well. Many of these artists put a lot of heart into their work - they sing it with all they've got - and I respect that. That kind of heart was what was missing from the Eagles' performance last night.

Oh my TBF - it does appear that we will have to sue you for posting that pic of Keith and Brad. I have to say that I also think Keith Urban is very hot and Brad Paisley is kinda cute as well.

As far as our guys, I also think their performance fell a little flat last night for a closer. I do wish they had been a bit more animated and less stoic. However, IMO, a lot of the problem was the song. BBF was the obvious choice, so I was not at all surprised that they performed it. But, to me, the song is just not that exciting. It is cute, has a catchy tag line, and is pleasant enough to listen to, but lacks the pizazz of being a show closer. I was really hoping that they would surprize us with another choice, even though deep down, I knew it wouldn't happen. :brickwall: But, that's okay guys, :iloveyou: anyway!

It was brilliant. Maybe they didn't smile because the mix was not up to their level of perfection. And I thought their crowd was just not into it. I mean, Come ON. It is THE EAGLES. The Farewell Live from Melbourne DVD is worth every penney. It is priceless. They are a once in a life time live concert. Like Paul McCartney. Whatever you have to pay, see them LIVE. The ticket price is cheap. You will never see anyone as good in your entire life. CMAs were lucky to have them once. Twice is a miracle. Welcome blessings!!! I think I speak for everyone here---none of us dispute the fact that they are the best or none of us would put the time into this board that we do. A lot of us here have seen them live, a lot of us more than once and I know as much as I hate to spend that much money (I'm sorry-but the tickets are not cheap) on a concert ticket (or several) I do not regret the fact that I have spent the money to see the best concert ever!!

Not only do I agree with you about the Farewell dvd, but I also feel the same about HFO dvd, every album, cassette, cd, poster, book, t shirt, keychain, etc... that I have ever spent money on in my 34+ years as a fan--they are priceless to me!

As far as their performance last night--I guarantee you that had I been there I would of stood and cheered as loud if not louder than anyone there, but the fact is they did look flat and not happy, for whatever reason. Yes indeed, the CMAs were lucky to have them as are all of us fans but I think over the many many years of fandom I have earned the right to say what I have.

That's my story and I am sticking to it!!

Again welcome!

First of all, can you believe I completely forgot to watch the show until my son called at 8:45?! I could not believe it! Thank God I didn't miss the Eagles performance!

I, too, thought they were very stiff and not very happy. Maybe they were tired. They looked tired. I'm betting they were thinking "why are we doing this?!" Especially after getting beat in their category. They didn't sound good at all and I also thought the song was slower tempo than usual. Oh well, I still love them, too!

Okay, I'm continuing to watch the CMA's...

Can somebody explain the Taylor Swift appeal? This is the second time I've seen her perform (I think last time was on last year's CMA's) and to me she's not a very good singer or performer. I guess I like female vocalists who have some vibrato in their voice and she has none. I realize she's young but how did she get this far?

I also wanted to comment on Kid Rock's guitarist's shirt - Joe the Strummer - pretty clever!

I think Taylor Swift is a very gifted and talented young lady. She does write most of her songs. I think she appeals to the younger set more and that is what is generating all her success. Everything she puts out turns to gold. Her newest video, Love Story, is so sweet it hearly drips. I like her, but get a little tired of her. Same with Carrie Underwood. As great as Reba, Martina, and Faith are, they can't even seem to compete with those two.

I just finished watching the parts of the show that I didn't see last night. Here are the last of my impressions.

That new guy, Jason Aldean (wearing the white t-shirt and hat, singing 'She's Country') was pretty good - reminded me a little of 38 Special.

It was good to hear Darius Rucker (Hootie and the Blowfish) again. I've always liked his voice.

I thought Carrie Underwood's acceptance speech for Female Vocalist of the Year was very gracious. I'm not a big fan, but she's okay.

Brooke, I'm not much of a country fan, but I think Martina McBride has the best voice of the ones you listed.

OK.... all this stuff about them not looking happy. What were they supposed to look like? I also disagree about the smiles being 'forced' at the end. Glenn mouthed 'thank you' and I thought he looked OK. Why dwell on that? They were doing a job. I don't see what this obligation is for them to always smile and look animated. My two cents, sorry. It is such a rare event to see them on TV that I will take what I can get. I should be able to get a few screen shots once I record it from Australian TV.

Perhaps I was wrong about the smiles being forced, although it seemed that way to me. But come on, FP, surely you must admit that when the artist lacks animation, their performance suffers. I want to see guys who are feeling what they're singing, showing me that emotion - not guys who look like they'd rather be anywhere else. Part of the reason why I love watching Glenn perform is the heart he puts into it. That's what takes a good performance and turns it into a powerful one - the level of emotion. If they're not going to look as if they care, why bother showing up to see them live? I might as well stay home and play the CD.

That said, I don't think they were AWFUL. I enjoyed watching them by virtue of the fact that they're so talented and I like the song. But I won't apologize for feeling the performance was lacking emotionally, and that as a result it wasn't as good as it could have been. I'm just glad this is the exception and not the rule. Most nights, the Eagles do throw themselves into it. That's why we keep comin' back for more!

I adore Waiting in the Weeds but given the fact that each song had to fit within specific parameters for commerical breaks, it is way too long for an awards show. Personally, I would've liked to see them perform What Do I Do with My Heart. It showcases both Glenn and Don, especially at the song's end. It would've been perfect.

A performance at an awards show doesn't HAVE to be full of emotion... unless you want it to be powerful. Then, yeah, it does.

But if your attitude is "I'll take what I can get" then there's not much to say; if you're satisfied, that's great. I'm not going to try to talk you out of that. Just don't be shocked that some folks expect more from America's greatest band.

An excerpt from a review of last night's show from The Nashville Skyline:
*****************************************

And how telling it is that perhaps the most country-sounding song of the evening came from the old guys -- country-rock pioneers the Eagles (http://www.cmt.com/artists/az/eagles/artist.jhtml), who have been at this longer than some of the other performers on the show have been alive.

Interesting review DF. It seems like a lot of the popular country songs of today aren't completely country. Many of the songs have a rock (which i kinda like) or pop quality to them. Some even slightly resemble a little bit of hip hop (for example: Honky Tonk Badonkadonk by Trace Adkins)

I can't remember if it's the CMA or the ACM that is not voted by the individual members but the ballots go to the record company who choose the people they want to win. If they have a performer they want to push guess who gets the votes. I've watched these award show for years (yep I'm an Arizona Sh*t Kicker as country fans are known around here). This has long been a problem because it's not the best artist that wins but who records for the biggest record company. If you know anything about country music at all you may have noticed that some big performers were missing(Tim Mcgraw,Faith Hill.Toby Keith) thats because some of them have started their record company and can't get the voted anymore. With the Eagels not recording for one of the major record labels they were lucky to even get a nomination.

A portion of Lefsetz's take on the CMAs:

I felt strangely disconnected from last night's CMA Awards.
Maybe it's because I think Brad Paisley is a great guitar player but only a B level songwriter. Maybe it's because I believe in the Beatles, and no matter how great some of those George Strait records are, I can only believe in him so much because he didn't write them. Maybe it's because all those males wore cowboy hats, even though I don't think any of them ride the range on a regular basis. There was just too much artifice. Kid Rock tried, but either the mix was wrong or his voice was blown.

Miranda Lambert played acoustically, but sans feistiness...there just isn't the same magic. As for Taylor Swift, I loved her once, but those days are through. Everybody applauding her high school drama performances is delusional. What's that got to do with music? And that's what bugged me. The music. It was just too formulaic.

And then came the Eagles.Talk about a mismatch. It would be like Stevie Wonder closing a Jonas Brothers show. Illustrating the roots, where it all came from, but the performance being lost upon the assembled multitude. And unlike last year, the Eagles were rehearsed, the mix was right, but the song was never a hit. Yet the lyrics packed a punch absent from all the other numbers. George Strait won because he saw God, what a cheap shot. Don Henley was singing about real life.

That's what our stars used to do. They used to tell us about us. By exploring the fringes, the limits, delivering insight that eluded us.

It's been funny reading all the fashion reviews too. I already commented on Jennifer Nettles' awful fringed number, but how about that flowered jacket the guy from Rascal Flatts wore? :yuck: It really DID look like he was wearing his Granny's curtains!

The mix was right? What show was he listening to? And lyrics about your girl being neglectful, selfish, and shallow pack more punch than lyrics about one's soul or the war?

Mmmmkay.

Methinks someone is showing his bias... AGAIN. And I love the Eagles even more than he does, but come on!

Interesting AZ. I don't know anything about country music but it did dawn on me later that Tim McGraw and Faith Hill weren't there. Do you think they were just dissing the whole thing because of how it's done? (They were there last year, weren't they?)

Another thing that stood out to me, the guys wore the same outfits as last year. Boring, just like their faces looked.

Compare last year's performance to this years: no comparison

Just my 2 cents.

But I still love them.

TimothyBFan
11-14-2008, 11:12 AM
Ok Brooke-I took your challenge (it was a real heartache watching it again!) you are right about the differences in the performances and even the audience reacted so much more enthusiastic last year (or maybe that was just a certain Border member that I heard shouting! there last year!).

The outfits were different and more relaxed and casual which seemed to go with what most of the men were wearing to perform, this year anyways. They just looked more relaxed and as if they were enjoying themselves a whole lot more last year!

Just a side note--Did anyone else seem to think that Vince Gill has gained about another 50 pounds since last year? WOW!

Yes, I thought that Vince Gill looked like he had gained quite a bit of weight too.

As a country music fan I feel like the CMA's have become a bit of a joke. It seems to have become some kind of weird popularity contest and the outcome seems to be affected by what record label has the most eligible performers voting and not by the merits of the artists themselves.

I was actually amazed the Eagles got nominated at all and as much as I hoped they would win I knew they probably had no chance against Rascal Flatts who have been the flavor of the moment for the last six years running.

Wow! I love this board. Thanks for being here. I wanted to try to see the performance again, so I typed in Eagles CMA 2008, and it showed me page 6! I am so happy to see you all! I have been reading reading reading. And
I want to reply to everybody. I apologize if my first post seemed to put anyone down. It was not meant to at all. I had just read the AOL comments posted about the CMA'a and here the news keeps showing people complaining about the price of tickets. But there sure were lots of people outside wanting to pay any price to get in to the sold out forever you are dreaming noway no how concert. And this person had a different take on why the Eagles were there. And, what he says about the Eagles being legends is SO true. And if it were true, maybe why no smiles. Altho, after seeing it again on youtube, (thanks for the link) and after seeing that pic with Shania, (I knew when she said who he was with he would be smiling and so would she, ha.) I wonder if they were acting. It is a song where you could be very mad. And my pick for song would be Hole in the World, to show Nashville who is a legend and why. But they already did that last year just being there. Anyway, here is the quote and wonder what you fans think.
"Vocal Group - Am I the only one that gets a kick out of the CMA's continually putting up The Eagles in this catagory just to put Rascal Flatts over them. I guess that somehow solidifies the win a little more when you go over a legendary group like The Eagles. I'm not even that big of an Eagles fan and I find it insulting. I love a lot of Rascal Flatts music and I vividly recall fond memories hanging out with the guys when they were first hitting the scene in 2000, and they may be a juggernaut right now, but they still have a long way to go to match the legacy of The Eagles. Hopefully they would even admit that.

Just another thought about Rascal Flatts, I remember one time coming across them singing Life In The Fast Lane on YouTube and I was so sickened :yuck:that I posted a remark to it! I thought it was awful. Recently I found several postings on YouTube from them in concert doing Hotel California, in fairness I did not pull them up because I was afraid it would set me off, so I don't know if they are any good at copying Eagles songs. I guess some would consider this a form of flattery but considering they have beat them 2 years straight for this award...:scowl:

Blessings - that's quite an interesting comment you've posted. I would hate to think that the people at the CMAs would be so petty, though! I agree that giving the award to Rascal Flatts over the Eagles not once but twice is tres lame. However, since the Eagles have never truly been identified as "country" (despite their best efforts and the whole 'legacy of coutry rock' angle), I'm not surprised they lose to the folks who are straight-up country.

As for getting deleted - LOL! I don't know what you're used to, but on this board, deletion is reserved for spammers and trolls. Indeed, we've never banned anyone so far who wasn't a spammer (knock on wood). As long as you stay within the realm of the terms of service (https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1) and netiquette guidelines (https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=450), you're fine.

Just to stand up for Rascal Flatts a little bit, I think they are great doing their own thing. I really like many of their songs. I especially love Joe Don's backside in their video I Melt! (Sorry, I didn't mean to get shallow about it.) It's really about the music. (cough) But that's just me.

Thanks for posting that TF. I didn't see them in the audience at all, even though I was looking hard.

My thoughts on the performance are that it seemed that they gave a "stoic" performance, like they had to play the "legends" role as the elder statesmen. The word "subdued" also comes to mind. Just IMHO, because we know they can rock!

I thought their performance was such a letdown on Wed. (after waiting throughout the entire show), that I couldn't even bring myself to post that night. Then I got so bogged down with work and home stuff, that I barely had time to read anything, never mind post. I'm surprised we're still discussing it! I agree, I thought that their sound was off...though I don' t think the tempo was slower. They could've appeared more enthusiastic, esp. after the host made the intro about "if you're going to drink from the well, remember those who dug the well. " I thought that was a cool proverb he found.
I had said earlier that I really liked Keith Urban's and Carrie Underwood's performances. I guess I never thought Keith was hot when I saw his picture in magazines, but I absolutely agree now in seeing him perform. I used to wonder what Nicole saw in him...but now I'm starting to think the opposite (lol  )! Seriously, though, she looked better with her head of curls in her Tom Cruise days than she does now with her poker straight hair all combed to one side.
Oh, and I also liked Kid Rock's performance. I actually liked his song a lot this summer; actually much better than the original "Sweet Home Alabama." (I'm sure all the Lynyrd Skynyrd fans are cringing, but I just never liked them...)
And BTW, less than a week till the boys and I share some chocolate!!
