Hey guys, I have a question. We all know that by 1988 Glenn was "Livin' Right," but does anyone know any more about when and how his fitness kick got started? When did he start doing those ads?

I have a Random Notes piece from Rolling Stone from 1989 which runs as follows:

'I'm sort of being paid back for doing 1500 sit-ups a day, five days a week', says Glenn Frey, whose recently honed biceps are being used - alongside a photo of Frey, circa 1976 - in an ad campaign for Jack LaLanne Fitness Centers. THe former Eagle says he was recruited by the head of the company, who's a fan of Frey's song 'Livin' Right'. Why'd he do it? 'They offered me a shitload of money', he says. 'Secondly, I actually feel very strongly about fitness. It's done a lot for me'. As for getting flak from people in the music world, Frey says he hasn't heard from anyone. 'I think they took one look at me and decided maybe they should keep their big yaps shut'. He then launches into a diatribe that would make Neil Young's skin crawl. 'I do not cling to this antiquated hippie mentality that says it's us against them' he says. 'I personally do not consider Pepsi-Cola or Old Style Beer or the Health and Tennis Corporations to be the enemy. This is the age of adult rock stars. You can't be James Dean all your life'.

Thanks, Julie. I'd heard of this famous ad but had never actually seen it before. So Livin' Right came before the ad contract?

Hmm, now I'm a little confused about when he met Cindy. He said on Arsenio that it was on a fitness commercial, but if she appears in the Livin' Right video, it would seem he's misremembering a bit.

As Bernie would say, "Details, details!" lol

Hmm, unless he got the contract in between the release of the song and the filming of the video.

If given a choice I would opt for HC era Glenn - he looks so spaced out he would forgive my flaws. That muscle bound Glenn is a bit daunting, and anyway, what is he actually wearing? http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/eek.gif

Super-bulked up Glenn is a bit much for me, too. "Daunting" is a good way to describe the feeling you get looking at the photo. I think body sculpting can be overdone to the point where the person almost becomes dehumanized in a way; they appear to be a physical speciman of invulnerability lacking tenderness. Obviously, that is a stereotype, and it's the same man on the inside in both pictures. It is true, however, that many women such as myself find the hyper-definition of the latter photo a bit disconcerting and prefer Glenn to be toned and muscular to a degree but not a "Mr. Universe." I think HFO is where he is best situated into that happy medium.

Having been a gym rat myself around that time period, Glenn's wearing those happy little lycra shorts that were so popular then. All the women, and quite a few of the studlier men wore them. Actually, a lot of people who should never be caught dead leaving their house wearing them wore them as well! They leave little to the imagination.

I think the fact that he got "that" bulked up kind of speaks to his personality. Does he ever do anything half way? Exercising can be addictive to people who have an addictive type personality. It does feel good. And then, dangle money in front of him besides? Oh, and let's throw in the new hot young wife. Done deal.

I remember the men who lived in the weight room -and tried to out macho each other. Who could squat lift more? Who could bench press more? And the women who weren't happy to take just one aerobics class, they had to stay for that second one besides. I always found those people a little scary. I just wanted to lose my post-baby fat. I just tried to stay the heck out of there way! They were serious!

I am not entirely sure that those are in fact his arms. There is a difference between that shot and the Livin' Right picture sleeve where his arms look more natural.

I'm not sure about the 'let's throw in the new hot young wife' comment, Molly. They are still together, after all.

So Molly - if those women had said "Here, hold my purse." - I take it that you would've complied????

As for me, you will not be surprised that I like all of the Glenns. Say what you will about me - but, at least, I'm consistent! http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/eyes.gif

Wouldn't that be false advertising and therefore illegal?

I don't know either way. Don't you think the arms look a bit too bulked up, and haven't these places been guilty of using composite photos before, legal or not?

For what it's worth this is a paraphrase of what he said to Nicky Horn in 1992 about how getting fit made him a better singer:

'As a singer one has to be athletic. You have to stay in tune, control your breathing, have enough wind, have enough air so you can sing a lick at the end of a phrase..... I'm a lot less timid about stepping up to the microphone and biting off a chunk of song'. And long may he continue to do so.

I am looking at this again and I now tend to think that of course the muscles are bulging somewhat, because he's lifting a weight! http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/nerd.gif http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/eek.gif

I just can't imagine a company would structure an entire ad campaign using a prominent celebrity in a before/after situation, and make it completely fraudulent. It would be too risky besides unethical.

I am looking at this again, too, just to check. Yes, I think those muscles are bulging as a result of lifting a weight. Excuse me while I just check again.

I agree - they are probably his arms. Not that I would put it past a company to do something unethical, but if they wanted to do a fitness campaign, why would they pick someone unfit when there would probably be lots of other celebrities out there that they could have chosen?

Plus - that would be somewhat hypocritical on Glenn's part too. I just don't see him as the type of guy that would go along with scamming the public. I doubt if he needed the money that bad!

I agree. It doesn't make any sense to pay a celebrity tons of money to do your ads when you're not even going to use their body!

Ok, I'm joining this conversation a little late, but......in the Livin' Right photo it looks like a soft focus which would lose some definition. Also, in my opinion his forearms are more muscled today than in that picture. I was surprised at Pebble when I noticed the definition in his forearms as I had never noticed it before...perhaps due to those darn overshirts he wears on stage. The pictures are also from different angles. And even a few months between photo shoots can allow for the changes considering the serious body building he was doing at the time. I can't see Glenn agreeing to a composite. I think his ego wouldn't allow it. Just my two cents.

Oh, and by the way Nancy...I've heard it both ways. That he met Cindy filming his video and that they met filming the commercial. So..............

I noticed he was toned too, although I'm not sure I agree about them being MORE toned now. Perhaps just as toned.

I think it makes more sense that he met Cindy on the video shoot, just because it seems like it would be a big coincidence to have her on the commercial and on the video (although certainly possible). The only reason I'd like to pin it down is I put that it was a fitness commercial on his bio for this site and I hate having inaccuracies! Not that anyone else would care! lol

I think I just noticed the muscle tone in the forearms because he was in short sleeves and didn't have the over shirt blocking half of it. They are not necessarily more tone now but it was visible in person more so than that picture which has a soft focus.

And Nancy, you're right, you are the only one with the hang up about the bio. But we love you anyway!

Hey, look at me, digging up all the old threads...hehe! I'm new, I can't help it. :)

I actually love that bulked up picture, but I prefer "nicely muscled" Glenn, too. I used that picture in my efforts to convert my friend to an Eagles fan, though... ;) I think that picture is very, very hot and could happily stare at it for hours, LOL, but I don't really go for those types in real life. Actually, before the Casino Rama concert I decided I really needed to lose some weight, haha, the fact that I had a 3rd row seat and there was potential to actually be *seen* being a large part of that, and when going to the gym, I really did try to just stay out of the way of the guys that were built like that. I like him much better in the HFO era...obviously strong, but not like...bodybuilder-esque.

I still can't get over all that hair he used to have, though! His hair is longer there, in that HC pic, than mine is now!

I also heard that he met his wife on the video shoot...she was a dancer? Not sure...my friend told me that. I hadn't heard about the commercial at all, actually. I have so much to learn. :)

My friend and I: "Nice coat Glenn!"

Joe Walsh, at next pause between songs: "Hey, nice coat, Glenn."

Glenn: "Thanks, thanks...yah, I picked this up at the..Liberace garage sale, glad you like it..." ;)

LOL! Not many... ;) It was that one, and...hmm...I actually can't remember the other specific ones I used...ahahaha one of them was definitely a still of the Wonderpants, although that was just to highlight the sense of humor... ;) And then I played her After The Thrill Is Gone and Girl From Yesterday, and she was sold enough to have me burn a bunch of stuff for her to sort of..'learn' on...2 months later, she bought us ticket to see the Eagles for my Christmas gift and was every bit as excited about it as me!

So basically, I used Glenn to get her into the Eagles. (I could use him for many, many other things, but this was a noble cause. ;) )
