Eagles deliver solid set at Sommet

By DAVE PAULSON • Staff Writer • September 19, 2008

"Check your ticket stubs," Glenn Frey of country-rock kings the Eagles told the crowd at their concert at the Sommet Center in Nashville Thursday night. "This is the Eagles 'Assisted Living' tour, and we're the Eagles - the band that wouldn't die."
Frey's self-deprecating cracks at his aging band only made the precision and stamina on display during their three-hour set all the more impressive. You could to set your watch to the well-rehearsed proceedings, sure, but the band delivered everything with finesse, power and class.
The Eagles have been touring this year in support of Long Road out of Eden - their first full studio album in 28 years - and they didn't waste any time reminding their audience of that fact. The first four songs of the band's set were from Eden, each featuring a different member on lead vocals: Frey, drummer/guitarist Don Henley, guitarist Joe Walsh and bassist Timothy B. Schmit.
While each singer held his own with the arena crowd, the most powerful moments in those first tunes came when the band's rich, unmistakable harmonies swelled to the forefront, almost as crisp and strong as those immortalized on their albums.
For a band whose history of hard-living is the stuff of rock legend, The Eagles - with three of the four members now in their sixties - remain in remarkable shape. If Frey, Henley and company didn't look quite the same as fans remember, they certainly sound like it. The heaviest hits - even the frantic "Life in the Fast Lane" - were kept in their original key at the original speed, and the band didn't miss a beat.
They soon rewarded the audience's patience through the Eden set by launching into signature tune "Hotel California," with Henley at ease in a high register and Walsh nailing the epic guitar solo.
While the Eagles have precision in spades, they're fairly static performers. Their Nashville set was song-for-song the same one they've played since starting the U.S. Eden tour in May (though Nashville did not receive a second encore, unlike other cities).
It's hard not to contrast that with Bruce Springsteen's acclaimed concert at Sommet last month, filled with surprises and spur-of-the-moment song choices. The Eagles, on the other hand, all took off their matching suit jackets at the same point in the show. The members seemed casually choreographed at points, coming in tight to trade guitar solos and sharing microphones for harmonies in all the right spots.
Still, the band came off as sincere, even charming. Walsh, in particular, was destined to steal the show, mugging for the crowd and even wearing a "helmet cam" to film the audience while performing his solo staple "Life's Been Good."
The set lost some steam following an intermission - particularly with a seemingly endless rendition of Eden's title track - but eventually picked up, closing with a string of the band's toughest tunes: "Funk #49" by Walsh's old group James Gang and "Lane" among them.
The band returned for a two-song encore of "Take It Easy" and "Desperado," which was a fitting end to a concert with few surprises but plenty of rewards.
"We read the story of the tortoise and hare," Henley told the crowd before the intermission. "And we decided a long time ago that it would be better to be the tortoise. We're still here. You're still here."

It doesn't look good for encores in Chicago, TBF, but we can hope.

Terrific review - finally, a guy who's done his research!

Looks like Glenn's incorporating some new comedic material. Good deal! The man is hilarious with great timing in his joke delivery and shouldn't limit himself to the oldies.

They haven't played that song for quite a while, I'm afraid. It was dropped back in 2005.

In that Mark Lang interview Joe said he wanted to get away from writing such serious stuff. He said he wanted to get back to just having fun with Rock and Roll. I dont know if this has anything to do with not doing "One Day" in the concerts any more, but maybe he's trying to lighten up a bit.
Doesnt he occasionally do AA shows and benifits? Maybe he's saving it for those.

Well, the "assisted living" joke is relatively new. I didn't hear it at the Hard Rock Park.

Great review!

I'm praying for a second encore tonight, but it's not looking good. And even though they could drop ASWTDID, I'm needing to see Glenn dance! Where's he gonna dance if they drop it?

Glenn, pick another song to dance on PLEASE!

Hello Everyone!

I've been going to concerts off and on for over 30 years. But, somehow,
I never got a chance to see The Eagles. Until last Thursday night in
Nashville. Let me tell you, I'm certainly glad I finally got to see them.
What a treat it was. No ILAA tickets here. My wife and I got 9th row
floor tickets on Ebay and they were great. We were right in front of
Joe Walsh (right-center stage). The setlist was already posted here,
so I won't go over that, but there were no surprises there.

It's a little gutsy on The Eagles part to include so many new songs from
"Eden", but they were well received. But you couldn't help noticing the
difference in the crowd when the "hits" were played. They went nuts.
I was familiar with all the new stuff, especially since I've had "Eden"
playing in my car nonstop for about a month. Playing nine new songs
shows these guys are proud of their new material and want to share
that with the crowd.

I noticed the reviewer from the Nashville paper mentioned the difference
in the structure of this concert with the Springsteen show in August at
the same venue. Since I was at both shows myself, I understand what
he means since Springsteen seemed more spontaneous. But, what I felt
from this Eagles concert was a more professional, flawless execution of
their songs which made for an impressive stage presence. I thought the
sound at the Sommet Center was excellent. The Eagles have an amazing
way a replicating their sound from the recording studio to the stage.
Most bands cannot pull that off with the accuracy of The Eagles.

We got to the concert well before the doors opened so we would have
plenty of time to have our pick of T-shirts. I couldn't make up my mind,
so I bought 3 (tan, black, blue) and my wife got 2. The budget went out
the window. LOL. We got a "beverage" and headed for our seats and
waited for those lights to dim. I always get "goosebumps" when the lights
go out and you can see the shadows of the band members heading to
front stage. Then came "How Long" and "the joint was a-jumpin' ".

And now the camera fiasco. We had no problem getting through the ticket
line with our small point and shoot digital camera. And, yes, there were signs everywhere saying "no cameras or recording devices allowed".
As always. But when the show started, we noticed the camera nazi's on
the floor were all over people when they saw a camera being held up.
We tried it a couple of times anyway and were "spotlighted" TWICE by
ushers and told to put the camera away. Pissed me off. This was the third
concert we have been to at Sommet Center in the last 2 months and ushers never stopped people with cameras after the show started for
Journey/Cheap Trick or for Bruce Springsteen. So this was a bummer.
We got a few shots and I will post them when I can.

Yes, I was disappointed in the one encore instead of two. But I really
expected it, since that was what happened in the last few shows. And
I didn't get "Rocky Mountain Way". But there were so many other great
Joe Walsh moments (Life's been good, Walk Away, Funk #49, etc) that
I really didn't mind. Besides, my wife got one of her all time favorites in
"Boys of Summer" and that made her night. She loves Don Henley.
We left the building around 11:35 PM after enjoying over 3 hours of
great classic rock'n'roll from a great band and agreed we definitely got
our money's worth. And, yes, ladies and gentlemen, I would love to see
them again.

Rick

PS: Sorry about the delay in posting this. I've just been very busy since
we got back.

Rick, thanks for the heartfelt review. And the pictures turned out great! I like when you said you get goosebumps when the lights go down and you can see the silhouettes of the band members coming onto the stage. I think everybody can relate to that!

Now, here's a silly question that I never thought about until I saw one of Rick's pictures of Joe rockin' on the guitar.

Do the neckties ever get in the way of playing? I would think the tie would fall onto the guitar and get in the way of their hand. :headscratch:

Don't worry, nearly every venue takes credit cards at the merchandise
booths. They did in Nashville. I usually take an extra $200 or $300 with
me just in case they don't or their machine breaks! Ya gotta get a

Just for fun today, I pulled out my AmEx Gold card to see what I
could pull up on Ticketmaster for the Memphis show. The presale
started at 10 AM today. Much to my dismay, I kept getting tix in
the back of the floor or in the lower level but in the back corners.

What a crooked racket this ticketing business and Ticketmaster
have become. Don't even get me started on this. We'll save that
for another discussion. I promise you that in a few days you will
find great seats in the first few rows on Ebay or Stubhub or Razorgator.
Somehow the ticket brokers can get their hands on them, but true fans
get offered "back of the house" crap in the first few hours on the first
day of an AmEx Presale. Go figure!

I have NO idea how & where to buy tix though. Ticketmaster does seem to drop really good seats at the last minute, but I don't know if I I have the patience to wait that long. The whole ticketing system is structured completely wrong.

I did the AmEX pre-sale deal for my St. Louis tickets thinking - 'woohoo I'm going to have my pick of the crop' - NOT! The seats being offered were on the ground floor but way back - best I could get was row 33 and not even in the middle section. What was the point of a pre-sale for that? Trouble is you get nervous you will end up in the rafters so you buy the ticket.
