Is he confirmed as being there yet? Will it be on Golf Channel? We seem to have a version of Golf Channel over here, so I'll be on watch.

And ending Thursday! I can't find it listed again after that! Weird.

I think the Golf Channel is just doing a highlight show.

USA is showing the tournament on the weekdays and CBS will be showing it on the Weekend. That way you can watch it live (of course not as live as if you were there

You know I cannot play golf to save my life...

I tried to learn many years ago, but couldn't get it. Can't play baseball either. I do better at sports with bigger balls.

My father played golf towards the end of his life. I am useless at all sports and always have been. I can swim and that's it.

Hey guys,

It was an absolutely thrilling day. We have this whole elaborate report to write up, but that will take a while, so I'll give the important stuff: While we were shy and hung back pretty much the entire time while watching him play, at about the 16th hole Glenn actually came over to us, struck up a bit of a conversation, signed my Longbranch Pennywhistle album and Lissa's CD, and gave her a guitar pick. SO AWESOME. He also called me "sweetheart." Yes, this man is worthy of our adoration. More details to come when we get the energy to write them up!

I'm signed in on Lissa's name but it's me, Nancy, typing. However, she's right here! Again, we're in a rush now - gonna go out on the town - but we wanted to give you a quick summary of today, too. Don't worry, the detailed ones ARE coming!

So, today we also got to talk to Glenn several times. Why? Because we were freezing our ASSES off in short sleeves and thin tops. That's right, it was windy and cold - SO COLD - and we were dressed for yesterday's weather, after doing the opposite the day before. Irony like that is too delicious to be ignored. Glenn had to comment on it. And, as our suffering increased and the winds heightened, he expressed sympathy a lot. Worth the pain? Yeah. lol In fact, we even got signed golf balls and Glenn gave me a pick to make up for not having one for me yesterday.

What a man!

When I said detailed, I meant DETAILED.

Lissa and Nancy’s Excellent Pebble Beach Adventure: Day 1

What an incredible day! Because we’re using this kind of as a journal for our trip, we’re going to include EVERYTHING. This may bore you. If so, then simply read the executive summary for Day 1 and you’ll be fine. lol

But before we go into our “special moments” with Glenn, let us tell you about the game itself in general and some highlights. Frankly, today was not Glenn’s best day golf-wise, nor was it the best day for any of his teammates. While occasionally cursing and, after an especially bad shot or two, looking downright pissed, he was overall good-natured, charming, and humorous. (Something sweet: when there were kids around, the worst "curse" he would utter was "Mush!") He cracked jokes throughout. We wish we could remember them all, but a lot of them were “you had to be there” jokes anyway. One that we found especially funny: he referenced Arliss after playing badly on one hole after he had played well on the previous hole. He said that it was “against the rules” to play two holes in a row well but if he could do that, he really would be “the total package.” I remembered the reference and laughed in an unladylike guffaw/cackle combo, while Lissa had dirty thoughts. Another time, he was discussing with his caddy whether to wear shorts or pants the next day (PLEASE SHORTS Lissa and I think). “What we need is breakaway pants,” the caddy laughed, then Glenn grinned, “Yeah, we could wear breakaway!” and made the motion of ripping his pants off at the crotch and throwing them over his head, stripper-style. YEAH BABY. Sadly, I was only able to see this out of the corner of my eye, but Lissa got the full view.

Many times he acted the caddy in a refreshingly unassuming manner. He replaced his own divits and at one time, when he saw people talking during the lining up of a shot by his teammate, he stepped over the rope, raised his hands, and said loudly “quiet please!” Also, it was fun to watch how he and the “competition” pair got along. They cheered each other on – we even saw Glenn and his fellow amateur Clay Walker knock fists!

Shallow section: Glenn looked terrific, but is anyone really surprised? His hair had grown a bit longer since we’d seen him in Sacramento, curling a bit at the nape of his slightly sunburned neck. He wore a visor or a cap, often backwards. Wardrobe-wise, the sportswear for today was a black golf top (didn’t see if it had “Eagles” on it) and dark green slacks, with black and white golf shoes. P.S. The man has big feet. Lissa says size 11, minimum.

Now, back to our adventures. Since Lissa and I arrived a little late due to traffic, we weren’t exactly sure where Glenn was. We knew his tee time was 9:10, but we weren’t sure how long each hole would take. At 9:40, when we finally got there, we started walking along the fairway looking for him. As we trudged down the steep path, I noted with dismay that it was LOT hotter than we thought it would be. And here I was, with a long-sleeved lined shirt, a raincoat… I was in for a long day. Lissa had also worn a light sweater over her shirt but was able to take that off. My coat was bulkier, however, and not easily draped across a purse. Instead, I decided to tie it around my waist. You can imagine the elegant picture of beauty I was with my sleeves rolled up, shirt askew, and a big honkin’ coat tied around my waist – a coat which sagged constantly, kept falling down my hips, and almost dragged the ground.

As we passed the first tees, we looked to the right and the left, trying to see where he was. We approached a small wooden bridge which had room for about four across. As we approached, we noted another party entering from the other side. Guess who it was? The man himself! We passed Glenn going the other way in the center of the wooden bridge and I suddenly realized that I wasn’t ready to even make eye contact with him for too long, much less talk to him. After a dopey smile, I looked away and continued with my eyes on my feet. Lissa and I stopped at the other side of the bridge and looked at each other for a moment, completely excited but trying to keep it under wraps. After a moment, Lissa said, “Do you think we’ve waited long enough to follow him?” I replied “HELL yeah! Let’s go!”

And so began our adventures of following Glenn Frey around the Poppy Hill golf course (one of the three Pebble Beach Resort golf courses – over the next two days, Glenn would golf the other two). Unsure what to do or how to behave, Lissa and I followed along and hung back with the crowd for the first hole. Glenn didn’t do so well on that and wound up hitting it onto the sidewalk in the midst of the crowd. This was when I betrayed my fever-pitch Frey Fandom to Glenn. I saw him stepping over the rope into the crowd a few feet ahead of us. My first thought – “Glenn is mingling with the crowds!” As I thought this, he looked up and met my eyes. I audibly gasped and my eyes popped wide, eyebrows raised high, my dweeby excitement obvious even behind my sunglasses. In other words, I had a freak-out face, which would unfortunately reappear a few more times. I actually whispered “What do we do now?” It was then that Lissa saw that he was actually trying to hit a ball and not "mingling" per se. Thank goodness she pointed that out before I really made a fool of myself!

We hung back a little more and watched him do that hole, then another. Then it was time for what I dubbed the “royal processional” where the team marches from one hole to the next behind a man carrying their names on a card as we, the plebes, are blocked from the path until they have passed. It was usually at this point when people would run up to Glenn and ask him to sign something, which he always did, although sometimes when he was in a hurry he would just ask them to walk with him and do it quickly and without much thought. We saw one guy do this during the processional, and we saw Glenn stop to sign his hat. Then, Glenn looked up and saw us watching, and he looked expectant, knowing by my earlier idiotic expression that we were Frenzied Frey Fans. It seemed he thought we would charge at him for his autograph. Instead, we hung back, and the processional moved on. This was to be a pattern. We follow, hover in the back, watch others get their autographs, watch Glenn look over at us, and watch Glenn move on when we stood frozen.

Unfortunately, hovering sometimes meant that you were the last ones to catch up to the crowd. And for two girls with woefully inadequate senses of directions, that could be a problem. Sure, we had a map, but the paths all look alike, and the holes are laid out all over the place, and there are different crowds going different ways, and… well… we got lost. We wound up on the wrong side of Glenn’s green, at a place where the path was blocked and we were stuck. We finally were able to catch up when Glenn circled back and the path was opened.

Now, there were about 20 people following Glenn at the beginning, and that number lessened as time went on. Therefore, we were actually pretty visible, despite the fact that we were hanging back. When we got lost, Glenn actually appeared to notice! He was looking around as he waited, and to our surprise his gaze actually rested on us for a moment. This was to happen several more times over the next few holes. Worried that we would become confused again and making sure that we were still following him? Perhaps. lol

A side note – there were three other “superfans” following Glenn from tee to tee. What had they brought for him to sign but a seventh grade yearbook purchased from our own Fred Pike! Indeed, they dropped Fred’s name when Glenn signed it, starting him on an eager discussion of the “old days” that he picked up again more than once (in fact, one time he even walked with them to talk about it). We heard him say that there were a lot of intelligent guys in that class – one he said was really short but incredibly smart and one was the head of the math department at a university (we forget which). He talked about attending a reunion a long time ago, that “a lot of gifted people” were in that class, and that he’d “like to see those people again.” I hear the big 4-0 is coming up….

As the day wore on and grew hotter, Lissa and I devolved into various degrees of disarray. We had not brought enough water. We had only brought two granola bars for food, and had skipped breakfast. We hadn’t brought any sunscreen. We were a pathetic pair. We were enjoying ourselves so much, however, it didn’t matter. It was just such great fun to be able to “play along” with a guy we admire so much and see him off-stage. And, amazingly, we found ourselves actually getting into the game itself, cheering, clapping, and groaning when appropriate – for all the guys playing, not just Glenn. OK, so Lissa and I aren’t going to Sears tomorrow to buy clubs, but we have started getting the idea, lol. We continued to hang back, and whenever I saw Glenn was looking our way, I either made the “Freak out face” or looked away (the latter more than the former, thank goodness.) At one point he actually came up to the rope in front of us, a few feet away, and smiled right at us. I think he was trying to be encouraging and approachable, but I was still too scared to do anything but stare stupidly, then look away. Sad but true.

Funny moment: A siren or something went off when Glenn was getting ready to shoot. He paused and waited for it to end – but when it did, some dogs or something started howling. Everybody was looking around – “What is that?” Coyotes? Glenn says, “Sounds like a Fleetwood Mac rehearsal.” I made a noise of disapproval and for one nanosecond thought I should say something to defend my other fandom – then I realized how completely lame it would be to have my first words to Glenn Frey be something along the lines of “Fleetwood Mac is awesome!” Um, no. Besides, it was just a joke, so I held my tongue. Lissa was much more clever. She used the opportunity to joke “wasn’t me!” when all the noise started going off. Nancy’s wit, where hast thou gone? Sigh.

A couple more cute moments: Glenn ran off into the woods to take a pee during the 12th hole - and no, we could not see him! Also, when we go to the 9th hole, there was a contestant refreshment stand behind the tee. When Glenn bent over to place his ball on the tee and gave the ladies at the stand a nice view of his tight butt, they actually APPLAUDED. He straightened up and grinned back at them. The man knows he’s hot. lol

The highlight for Lissa and I came at the 16th hole. It had been a long and fun day, but we decided not to approach Glenn after all – just watch, let him enjoy his game, and maybe talk to him the next day. That would all change here. After his initial hit, he started to move forward, as did we, a little behind (our usual pattern). Suddenly, he did a u-turn, came back to where we were, and called out, “You need to lose some of those layers!” At the time I was once again fiddling with my coat and automatically said “Seriously.” Then it dawned on me we were being spoken to by Glenn Frey, and I about dropped that stupid coat then and there. “You need to get you some cooler clothes,” he continued. At this point we both turned to meet him at the rope. I was totally jazzed – here was our moment! - but I still let Lissa take the lead. She explained, “It was a lot colder when we left the house! I live two hours away from here!” He asked, “Where do you live?” “Livermore – it’s on the 580 corridor,” she replied. He nodded knowingly. “Oh, my brother lives in Livermore!” the caddy piped up. (I had asked Lissa earlier not to mention I flew in from Indiana, worried that it might freak him out.) Finally I found my tongue. “Small state,” I joked. Not my best work. I don’t even think it got heard, much less a laugh!

At that point, Glenn started searching for something in his pocket (we realized later he was looking for picks to give us) and Lissa seized the chance. She titled her head flirtatiously and cooed, “Would you sign something for me?” It worked. “Sure!” he said. Lissa gave him the pen she had brought and also the CD booklet for “Live in Dublin.” Then he said, “Are you kidding? Solo stuff? Wow! This just makes my heart pound,” he laughed. “It makes my heart pound, too, when I listen to it!” Lissa replied, although Glenn missed part of it as he continued, “Everybody brings Eagles stuff. This is great.” Then he asked her name, and signed it, “Melissa, my best, Glenn Frey” (as evinced above)! She thanked him, took it back, and was presented with a guitar pick to boot!

Then it was my turn. Still wearing a stupid grin I seemed unable to control, I moved up to the rope. He was fishing in his pockets again, muttering, “Where did all the picks go? I can’t find another one…” I guess he figured I was going to ask for one. Instead, I asked, “Do you have a little more time to sign something for me, too?” He smiled and said “Yes.” I started to pull out the Longbranch Pennywhistle album as Lissa helped build anticipation by saying “Wait ‘til you see what she brought!” I then presented it to him. His jaw dropped. “Wow!” he said more than once. “I got it on Ebay,” I volunteered at his look of shock, but it didn’t seem to register. He was still looking at the album. He turned it over and saw the photo of himself dangling from the rope. He grimaced. “Isn’t that just sick?” he said with mock horror (or perhaps genuine horror at his awful hairdo). Then he asked me my name, too, and I got the autograph. “Thank you so much,” I gushed as he handed it back. “You’re welcome, sweetheart,” he replied. “Don’t get too hot!” Feeling a little bolder, I said in the exaggerated tone of a martyr, “We’re suffering, but we’ll survive.” He chuckled a bit, then turned to catch up with the group, leaving us to gleefully look at our prizes and try to get control of ourselves before catching up with the rest of the crowd. Lissa started to call after him that he had stuck her pen in his front pocket, but I shushed her. "Let him keep it, hon. I'll buy you a new one!"

We spent the seventeenth and eighteenth holes in a quasi-daze. Then, the last putt was putted. Glenn took off his visor and ran his fingers through his hair, then retired to the clubhouse. We also took our leave – except we had to hike back up the hill and wait in line for a bus to take us to another bus which would take us to Lissa’s car. Exhausted, aching, sweating, but thrilled, we couldn’t wait for tomorrow. And as we hopped into her van and turned on the CD player, we heard the opening strains of “A Walk in the Dark.”

Perfection.

But that was only the beginning! To be continued… DAY TWO!

Hey guys! Just got back from the end of Day 3... it was a completely different animal! Lissa and I are determined to finish our write-ups tonight, as I'm leaving in the morning and we want to do them together. Hopefully we won't pass out from exhaustion first!

So, really quickly, the "low-down": while we got a few passing acknowledegements and comments from Glenn, it was such a massive venue with thousands of people and some fairways so distant you couldn't even make out facial features, we didn't get a photo or anything like what we'd had the past two days. What we did get we'll detail later. While the day was a bit of a letdown after the previous two, it was still special. Overall, the trip was an incredible thrill and a precious memory I will always treasure!

So much for our determination to finish those write-ups last night - determination which was sucked out of our bodies by total exhaustion after dinner! I am working on it now, though, and after running it past Lissa for fact check and any forgotten details, I'll post Day 2 and Day 3!

Nancy - are you trying to say that Glenn wore you and Lissa out to the point of exhaustion - oh my! :jealous:

And Julie - all I can say after this is forget a new album, Glenn! You need to keep your butt on the greens. After Nancy and Lissa's experience, we've got a much better shot at meeting Glenn on a golf course than at any Eagles concert. Now, don't get me wrong - I still want them tour, but I'm quite content to hear the old stuff again if that gives Glenn more green time.

Day Two

This entry will prove that Glenn really cares about his fans. He was such a caring gentleman to two pathetic souls all day that I was blown away. And yes, the pathetic souls were Lissa and I!

Yesterday, as you know, we were so hot it wasn’t even funny. So, we figured we had learned our lesson. I put on a thin pink shirt and Lissa put on a light shirt as well. We stocked up on water (and it made that bag I was hauling around VERY HEAVY). We were good to go…. or so we thought....

We arrived that day and realized it was a bit nippy out, but decided that it would no doubt warm up as the day progressed, and with all those waters weighing the bag down, the last thing we wanted to do was carry around coats again. We left them in the car and went on our merry way.

Now, this day was when they were all doing Spyglass. Lissa had found out it was the hardest course and it was easy to see why once we arrived. It wrapped around steep hills and then out to the seaside cliffs (actually very lovely – there were even a few deer milling about). Walking it was arduous – I can only imagine what playing it is like. And Lissa and I got to walk it pretty much twice. Why? Because we are idiots. OK, well, not idiots, but forgetful. We forgot Glenn started on the 10th hole that day. The place is set up so that on one side of the main road are the first nine holes, and on the other side the back nine. Each set of nine holes circles from 1 to 9, which both are near the main road. We tromped to the wrong side, blissfully ignorant, and started out at the 1st hole. Nope, Glenn’s not there! On to the 2nd, up the hill. Nope, Glenn’s not there! On to the 3rd – more hills, more walking. Nope, Glenn’s not there! Finally about the 4th or 5th hole, which are at the far end of the loop and where the path turns back towards the gate, we pulled out the sheet of tee times and tried to determine how far ahead Glenn was from the group which we were currently seeing. This was when we saw that asterisk by his team and remembered what it stood for – Glenn had started on the other side of the course! We hustled back, going backwards on the course so as to move more quickly (groups hadn’t gotten there yet), cursing ourselves all the way. Finally, we got to where Glenn was – the 14th hole – and it was actually a bit warmer, too!

Relieved if a bit achy from the trek, we settled back to enjoy ourselves. We were kind of weirded out when Glenn’s partner Stadler seemed to point at us when we arrived, but we’re hoping he was just pointing in our direction and not at us. A moment later Glenn said something to Clay right before he teed off that made him double over in laughter with spit coming out of his mouth. Glenn apologized for distracting him. In my paranoia, I was like “We’re not a laughingstock, are we?!” But I realized odds were it wasn’t about us! We once again hung back, figuring we’d already had our attention, and we didn’t want to act as if we were entitled to more.

WARNING: EXTREMELY SHALLOW ALERT: Glenn was wearing a navy blue short-sleeved top and dark beige pants that didn’t cling as well as those of the previous day. However, that didn’t matter once we were given an early eyeful when Glenn did some quad stretches facing us. He bent his leg and grabbed his foot, then pulled it behind him... we enjoyed the view.

Now, before we get into it, let me give you some overview of the day outside of Lissa and Nancy’s “moments” lol. Despite the difficulty of the course, Glenn did better than he had the previous day with regard to the par. Most of the time he seemed happy with his shots. However, he was also more focused, understandably. As a result, there was a lot less crowd interaction and joking around. In fact, there was very little of it. One funny thing he did do was go over to a few girls and talk up Clay Walker to them. “We have a good team – that Clay Walker, he’s a country musician, young and handsome. In fact, he could change his name and pass for 14.” The Fred Pike people were also there, and Glenn chatted with them for a bit.

Back to us, though! lol At the 15th hole, Glenn tucked his tee behind his ear. Lissa started to say “I like...” but trailed off when he looked at us, then just smiled. lol He went off to hospitality and we tromped back to the other side of the course where we’d begun and the 1st hole. I had to go the the port-a-potty so we missed that, but caught up on the 2nd hole.

And that’s when the fog started rolling in and the wind picking up. The sun was no longer visible and the temperature dropped drastically. Lissa and I began freezing our butts off. And I mean freezing, people. Not just a bit chilly. Shuddering, shivering, miserably cold. And Glenn actually noticed! Once I saw that he noticed, I knew he would say something. How could he not? Irony like that is hard to ignore. Sure enough, he came over to us again. “Where are all the warm clothes now?” he asked, flinging his arms wide. “You know, I carried that damn sweater around all day yesterday and didn’t need it, and now that I do, I don’t have it!” Lissa replied, laughing. I said in a mock-somber tone, “Welcome to my life.” He looked a bit confused by that – once again my attempt at humor fails! (Lissa says she think he didn’t hear me clearly, since I didn’t yell it and the wind was loud.)

We moved on to the 3rd hole. Glenn and the team went down pretty far away to hit as we stood on the hillside looking down at them. We were actually huddled together for warmth at one point. Glenn looked up and saw us and I guess really pitied us, because at the 4th, he comes over and says, “I don’t think we have any more clothes.” In other words, if they had, they would have given them to us. What a gentleman! At the 5th we were a bit distracted by some folks from Indiana (BTW, at every single hole with every new group of people, we invariably heard at least one person say, "Ooh! He's a leftie!" lol). After that there was some downtime as the team waited, so Lissa and I went down to the nearby path, sat on a fence, and pulled out our lunch of granola bars and water.

Then, on the 7th hole, Glenn further showed how considerate he is by coming over to us again and saying, “One of you didn’t get a pick…” “Me!” I piped up. “That’s right, it was you,” Glenn said. “I wanted to give you one before the kids got them all.” (Glenn had been making it a practice to give picks to any kids who were within arm’s distance. You know he must be a great dad!). He handed me the pick. “Thanks!” I cried, and was unable to come up with anything else to say. He smiled and headed back. How awesome is it that he not only remembered that, but was actually concerned enough about it to make a special trip over to give it to me? I was thrilled.

Later on at that same hole, Glenn once again came over. When Lissa gets cold, she puts her hands up together as she shivers. Glenn said to her, “Since my mother couldn’t be here, it looks like you’re praying for me at every tee! But you’re just freezing.” He was just really compassionate. At the next hole, Glenn as he passed said, “Still praying?” to Lissa who was doing that again. She crossed herself. Glenn laughed. “There are some things God doesn’t care about – and God don’t care about golf!” I muttered something stupid after that, which I hope he didn’t hear.

We were such pitiful figures that at the 8th hole, one of the officials, an older guy, came over and gave Lissa a hug. At that point I had started standing in front of her to block the wind as she huddled against my back. A sad, sorry sight. Meanwhile, Glenn made a bad putt and then his next shot went wide. He disgustedly threw his ball into the woods. Afterwards, he came over as we walked towards the next green. “Hey girls!” he called to get our attention. He reached out over the rope and shook our hands. “Thanks for coming out,” he said. We wondered why he said that, but the next day we realized he was thanking us when he could since there would be no time on Saturday. He still looked a little bummed, so Lissa tried to cheer him up by saying, “The next time you want to throw out a ball, I’m open!” He wryly replied, “I would miss.” Lissa said, “No, I would miss! I can’t catch!” I said... nothing, as usual, I was struck dumb. Sigh. He must think I am a total dweeb.

But then, after he made his next shot, he mouthed, “I’ll sign a ball for you.” Now, I didn’t see this. So I had no idea. And when he came to the sand trap to toss the balls, I was totally not expecting it. It came at me pretty fast, then bounced. I dropped to my knees to get it, but it bounced past and down the hill. Like the graceful lady that I am, I hopped up, did a 180, and dove at that thing, arms flailing out, butt in the air. I got it, alright. But as I did, I heard a stern male voice yell, “THAT BALL IS FOR HER!” It was GLENN. I was totally mortified. I thought he must have been throwing it to Lissa and I had made a fool of myself, acting like a desperate spinster bridesmaid knocking everybody aside for a bouquet meant for the pretty maid of honor. I hurriedly stood up with it. “I’m going to give it to her!” I cried. Two guys were staring at me. I told both of them, “I really am, I’m going to give it to her!” I ran back up the hill, but I saw she already had one. I’m thinking, “Did Glenn have to do another one because I took hers?” And I noticed people staring at us. “They all think I took your ball, Lissa! They all hate me!” I said to her as we walked on. Then Lissa told me what really went down. Turns out that after he had thrown that one for me, he had thrown another one towards Lissa much more slowly, perhaps because of her comment about catching, or perhaps because he had seen my display. :: cringe :: Just as it reached her, a guy a few feet away jumped in front of her, grabbed it, and gave it to his wife. That was who Glenn had roared at, as his arm shot out, pointing to Lissa. The guy quickly gave the ball back and all was well, although the people staring were no doubt wondering why Glenn wanted so badly for us to have the balls! Lissa turned to explain what she had said to him at the previous putt, but still some folks kept staring.

And that was how our day ended. We wanted to yell thanks to Glenn for the balls as he left, but we couldn’t catch up to him. We figured we would do it Saturday, but we had no idea how it would be – Saturday was a madhouse. We’ll get into more detail about that in the next report!

OK, here it is guys, the final installment!

Day Three

Lissa and I had no idea what were getting into the next day as we rode to Pebble Beach. “Think there will be less people than the first day?” We mused. “I suppose some folks who had to work Thursday and Friday might come today since it’s the weekend. Anyway, we’ll be sure to thank Glenn for the balls and hopefully get our picture made with him today.” Boy, were we ignorant. There were THOUSANDS of people at Pebble Beach – each hole surrounded by over a hundred people, the bigger holes surrounded by several hundred. They had set up bleachers to accommodate them. It was a regular media event – cameras everywhere. We were speechless.

A little info about the course itself: most of it follows the coastline high on a cliff. The views are stunning. A few fairways actually slope down the side of the cliff a bit. Unlike the other courses, most of the holes were a good distance from the crowd – certainly the most gorgeous ones on the cliffside. It was probably a good idea. With the amount of people there, someone would be bound to fall off the edge! The crowd Saturday was definitely a different set than had been there the previous days.... and not in a good way. It wasn’t just that there were more people. A lot of the people were drunk and stupid. Some pushed and shoved. Others just yelled at all the celebrities walking by for autographs, and got ugly if they didn’t get them. Glenn didn’t go near those types, and who can blame him? He wasn’t able to give many autographs at all, or do the kind of crowd interaction that had been his practice before. Besides the set up of the fairways and the unpleasant onlookers, the pace of the game was an additional deterrent. It had gotten off to a slow start and the golfers were hustling through, leaving no time to socialize – no breaks.

Glenn played pretty well that day. Sometimes his shots were better than the pros’! He was wearing khaki pants that were a bit tighter and well-fitted than on Friday, and a dark blue sweatshirt with a white polo shirt underneath. The weather that day was nice and sunny, but a chilly wind blew in from the sea. Glenn took off the sweatshirt for a few holes, but wound up putting it back on once we neared the cliffs. He alternated between a visor and a hat, which as before sometimes got put on backwards. For once, Lissa and I were appropriately dressed ourselves. She had on her sweater; I had on my Texas A&M sweatshirt from my undergrad days with that big honkin’ coat from Thursday. Hey, third time’s the charm!

As you guys know, Lissa and I had a bad habit of showing up late and missing the first few tees. We were determined to get there on time today, but we’d had a bit to drink the night before and wound up oversleeping a little. Still, fortune smiled upon us. We got to the first hole just in time to hear Glenn’s introduction. Perfect! We noticed the huge amounts of people but decided it would probably thin out at later holes. Boy, were we wrong!

The first cute moment we saw from Glenn was on the 2nd hole. For some reason, there was a backup of three teams on that hole. When the first team moved on, Stadler thought it was their turn to go, not realizing there was one more team ahead of him. He took his shot accidentally, and then the two pros who were supposed to go took their turn. The confusion had spread to Glenn, who was already walking towards where the amateurs were to tee off, thinking it was his turn. His team called out to him not to go, and when he realized his mistake, he plopped down on the grass near the ropes where the crowd was gathered (including us). Then he suddenly sprawled out flat on his back and sighed in a mock-wistful tone, “Oh, I so wanted to hit!”

He saw us at the 4th fairway. There was a bit of confusion for we spectators, as we had to double back and head in the opposite direction in order get to the next fairway because the direct path was blocked off for a processional. Lissa and I were unsure if we were going the right way and we don’t have the best track record in that area, so while she waited down the path, I ran up to an official to inquire. After I got the info from her, I saw Glenn was teeing off. I went up and watched him, then once he was through, ran down to Lissa to give the report. What I didn’t realize was that Glenn was heading the same way and was parallel to me. When I rushed up breathlessly to Lissa and started telling her “We have to go down THAT way…” I realized she wasn’t looking at me, she was looking at Glenn, who was waving at us! I stepped back and stammered, “Hey, guy!” – as if he were one of my male friends that I had spotted at Starbuck’s or something, and not Glenn Frey. Nancy the Dweeb strikes again! Glenn said to us, “We have to go down low today.” Neither Lissa and I are too sure what that meant – I’m thinking going to low fairways on the cliffs? – but the idea seemed to be that he wasn’t going to be interacting with the crowd much.

The next few fairways were the ones at the edge of the cliff. I found myself distracted from Glenn as I looked around at the gorgeous vistas. It really is an amazing view. Perhaps my distraction explains why I didn’t initially hear “FORE!” yelled as Clay Walker hit a ball right towards us on the 6th. Then I saw people scrambling out of the way and figured out the problem real fast. Lissa stepped to the side, but I just froze, arms akimbo, eyes wide, praying it didn’t hit me. It whizzed right above our heads but we were fine. Too bad my graceful pose was caught by all watching the path of the ball! Clay made it up on the next hit, however, so don’t feel too bad for him (by the way, Clay eventually made the cut).

The 7th fairway was quite a sight. It wrapped around the side of the cliff, and balls that went astray most likely wound up in the ocean thrashing below. The wind whipped over the cliff and it seemed the strategy was simply to hit as hard as you could into the wind and hope the ball was carried to the hole around the side of the cliff successfully. On this hole, Glenn’s ball actually found a better position than the pros’ did!

As we tromped to the 8th, one of the guys who was in charge of pointing at the ball as it flew through the air asked us if we could see it and help him. That’s how distant these tees were! We tried, but we couldn’t see a thing. (Side note: a little after this, Stadler and his caddy got an eyeful of two people who were having sex on the beach below! The caddy yelled at them to stop, as they were a distraction! The other guys were cracking up.)

For me, this was a time for me to take advantage of the fact Glenn couldn’t really see us and look my fill at him. When he was up closer, I’d do the old look-elsewhere-but-watch-from-the-corner-of-my-eyes trick. He caught me at this a few times, once in an embarrassingly obvious manner as I kept looking away and looking back to find he was still watching. Subtlety is not my forte. Therefore, I was a little relieved that I could safely just gaze. The man is so handsome he could be the subject of a poetic blazon, and I certainly stared enough to compose one.

It didn’t hurt that on the 9th hole, when Glenn was closer, we got to see him stretch his quads again on a bench facing us, or that on the 15th he bent over directly in front of us and took his time setting his tee. We're terrible, lol.

The 12th hole was lunchtime for us, once again with our granola bars, but the guys themselves weren’t taking too much of a break. This was where Glenn was interviewed. We were so excited to see it once we got home, because we couldn’t hear a word of it – it was far away, and we were walking down the fairway.

We’ve told you guys about the fact that there were some “undesirables” in the crowd. At the end of the 13th hole, a bunch of frat boys wearing matching shirts were attempting to give their frat’s cap to the celebrities to wear. They would chant their names – “GLENN! GLENN! CLAY! CLAY!” Glenn ignored them but Clay eagerly ran over. At the end of that hole, as Glenn walked by, a girl started singing Hotel California – badly. And she sang a LOT of it. She started at the beginning… “On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair…” I prayed she would stop there, but she only paused to take a breath before launching into the rest of the verse, then the whole freaking chorus! I was just cringing. He didn’t ever look her way, and I can only hope he didn’t her “vocal stylings.” They were making my ears bleed.

The 14th hole was really long, and very close to the crowds, so a lot happened along it. At the initial tee point, there were a lot of loud drunks hooting and hollering and trying to get autographs. We were too far away to hear what they were actually saying, but apparently it was something that annoyed Glenn. As he walked down the fairway past us, he turned and said “That’s why we’re third in the world instead of first” (I’m thinking America’s third in what - the number of intelligent people?) Lissa joked, “Some people need to have their alcohol cut off.” Once past us, he signed a few autographs. Some girls hugged him – Lissa and I bit back our jealousy, lol. Unfortunately, there were some nasty jerks near us who wanted Glenn to sign something and chanted “H-O” at him. Lissa and I didn’t know what they meant, and neither did Glenn, so he just passed them by. They hollered after him “The Heat Is On” – which I guess is what that referred to? – and then got pissy because he ignored them, yelling “When are you gonna go back to acting?” Losers!

While this isn’t Glenn-related, one more example of the lameness of some of the people in the crowd occurred at that same fairway when Lissa and I saw one guy actually steal Clay Walker’s ball that had gone out into the crowd. Clay went to hit it and it was gone! Then the clueless idiot came up to us asking for a marker so he could get Clay to autograph it. HELLO, Clay would KICK YOUR ASS if you asked him to autograph the stolen ball. Geez! Lissa and I looked for a pen to give him just so we could see it happen, lol. Too bad he got impatient and left.

A cute moment occurred on the 16th when Glenn hit his ball close to where the crowds were. We happened to be right at the place it landed. As he paused and looked at it, trying to figure out how to line up the hit in the taller grass at such a bad angle, a guy near us said, “Hit it now or you’ll choke.” Glenn looked at him in surprise. “You know I’m right!” The guy said. Glenn grinned, mulled it over for a second, then yelled to the rest of the team heading away, “I’m goin’!” We all laughed. After he hit the shot, he seemed to think it was pretty good, saying, “That’s the best I can do from here.” He then turned to the guy and joked, “Do you wanna caddy for a while? Carl’s getting tired.” (His caddy Carl did look pretty worn out, hauling that bag around! Glenn demonstrated his consideration for his caddy on the 18th as well, when he raked his own sandtrap instead of making Carl do it.) It was later on this same fairway that he sunk a shot when he didn’t think he was going to, to the applause and cheers of the crowd. He turned towards us and made this astonished face, like “I can’t believe I hit it!”

Now, it was time for the 18th. At this point I was in major pain. I had worn the wrong shoes – boots with heels – and my feet were hurting like crazy. The shoes themselves were cracked and ruined. It was a long fairway, and I plopped down shamelessly on the grass by the side and waited for Glenn and the processional to come by. Unfortunately, there were some nearby college boys who made the other loser fans look sophisticated and mature. They were trying to get autographs from everyone coming by, and while they waited, they played with the fairway boundary markers. One guy pressed up against the boundary rope so that his gut hung out over it in an absolutely repulsive manner. Another guy decided it would be brilliant to move the marker post so they could get closer. He pulled one out of the ground, moved it closer, then couldn’t put it back in the ground again! Apparently he didn’t realize you hammer those suckers in. He managed to get it in about half an inch, then let it go and left it tottering, standing a lot higher than all the ones beside it. These same guys, when they saw Glenn and Clay go by a good distance away, began to holler for them to sign something. Once again Clay eagerly ran over, once again Glenn passed. One of the guys then yelled that the Eagles were “one-hit wonders.” Lissa and I openly laughed at them, then hurried away as they got surlier.

On the last hole, Glenn didn’t do too well, but ended the game with a smile, shaking the hands of all his teammates. He took off his cap and once again ran his fingers through his hair. And as he stood waiting for the others to finish, I took this one last chance to just gaze, and it was a picture I’ll never forget. The sun was setting at the time, the sky fading from blue into golden hues, making the ocean sparkle and shine behind him, just beyond the fairway. The dusky light silhouetted his body. The sun glinted through his tousled hair, picking up coppery highlights as the wind blew through his curls. He looked magnificent. Talk about a Kodak Moment! I reached for my camera, hoping there weren’t any security guys around, but at that moment Glenn turned and faced our way. He probably didn’t even see us, but in my paranoia, I was afraid he would get mad if he saw a camera, so I shoved it back down in my purse. It doesn’t matter – a picture could never do justice to the vivid visual burned into my brain.

A fitting end to a glorious weekend – three days I will always cherish.

Perhaps that's why he paid a little attention to us...because we were respectful of his game. I was shocked at the behavior of some people. It's a golf course! Even if the person you're yelling at isn't taking a shot someone else is! There was one lady who ducked under the rope and stood in Glenn's way so he couldn't get to the next fairway and asked for a picture with him, which he did quickly. Probably to get her out of the way. The funny part was after Glenn walked away she started jumping up and down and clapping her hands. And she was not a teenager. lol

Look, after all this excitement, I am seriously thinking of writing to him, in a polite and respectful manner of course, at the address on the fastlane. I would die for an autograph, (well maybe just be a little ill for a bit). Do you think there is any chance?I forgot to reply to this - sorry! I say, why not try? Couldn't hurt. I am going to write a thank-you note. Hopefully it won't be too cheesy.

Nancy and Lissa - The only other thing I can add to sum up my feelings about your Pebble Beach experience is "TOTALLY FRIGGIN' AWESOME."

BTW - These are the same words I would use to describe that chapter! Or would "OUTSTANDING" be a better description, Molly? :pimp: :pimp: :pimp:

And Kate - As far as writing Glenn, you never know, it's worth a try. The only thing you have to lose is the postage. Go for it, girl! ;)

I agree that Nancy should write. You weren't 'just a face (or faces) in the crowd' - you actually connected with him and therefore there is a strong chance he'll respond.

As far as Kate's dilemma, I face the same one myself. I really can't bring myself to do it because I would rather not deal with the disappointment.

OK guys, I have a little problem. As I said before, I wanted to write Glenn a letter. So, I finally worked something up. Then, I went to get stationary.... and I can't find good stationary anywhere! First, I tried the supermarket, nope. OK, understandable. Then, I tried Border's, and the only kind they had was neon green or neon pink, I guess for teenage girls or something. When I asked where I might get some, the lady pointed me in the direction of the university bookstore, which is fine if I want my letter to look like official business from Purdue with a big black and gold "P" on it. But I might have to resort to that, because right now I have nothing but blank computer paper. I even tried to do some printable stationary, but the ones I tried were so amateurish it was embarrassing. It's probably silly to obsess over this, but that's me. So, what I'm asking is, should I keep hunting for nice stationary or what?

Going back to my intention to write, I too have been wondering about stationery, and what sort of pen to use, and whether to address him as 'Glenn' or 'Mr Frey'. I'll probably end up writing about five versions and tearing them up before I'm happy, and even then will wonder if I've done the right thing - sad, isn't it?!

Well, after searching 5 nearby bookstores to no avail, I finally decided to drive across town to Hallmark. I bought a cute set with little guitars on it. Now, perhaps this is cringe-inducingly cheesy, but the rest all had ribbons and roses, or little teddy bears for birth announcements or something. There was nothing plain! I bought 20 sheets because I know I'll mess up and tear up sheets too.

I'm not going to get my hopes up about getting a reply - I'm not doing this for that, and he certainly doesn't owe me one. I'm doing this to express my appreciation, and that it does, even if it's a bit schmaltzy. OK, a lot schmaltzy.

Whenever we've written to band members we've addressed them as "Mr. Henley" or "Mr. Frey" or even "Mr. Azoff" We've felt like we don't know them personally so it's not appropriate to use their first names and we want to show them respect.

I smiled when I read your posts, because when I wrote a letter to Don (about two years ago now) I remember wondering about the same things. Decisions, decisions.....

You know, it's amazing how much Don hate there is in the Fleetwood Mac world. From my Mac fandom I had that idea that Don was a word-class prick, although a talented one, and that Joe Walsh was a jerk who thought of Stevie as a "road f-ck." I remember when I came back from Chicago and had just seen this great performance by Don, and there was so much dissing going on, not necessarily in that thread but in other threads. It's because of the Stevie thing, obviously, but hey, Stevie's gotten over it and is close to Don.

Don't worry about that thing on LiveJournal (http://www.livejournal.com) - after all, I've linked to GFO (http://www.glennfreyonline.com) from there. I'm kind of hoping my Mac friends don't visit, though. I just recently visited a Mac board where they were speculating all sorts of things because I wasn't updating BN.net (http://www.buckinghamnicks.net). It was kind of upsetting. I'll have to go back to updating that. GFO (http://www.glennfreyonline.com) is off the ground now and my prospectus is successfully defended, so I have some time.

and there was so much dissing going on, not necessarily in that thread but in other threadsYeah, um..ahem.. ;) I didn't start it, of course, but I ended up involved in it because people really got very, very out of line in their disses towards Don. I don't understand it at all, for the exact reason you stated...if Stevie is over it, and she clearly is, why can't they be? It is just so surprising how much dissention there still is over all that...Don's awesome, hands down, whatever happened in the past between him and Stevie.

I had to convert the friend who yelled the coat comment out to Glenn with me into an Eagles fan, LOL, for that reason: she also felt Don was a world-class prick. However, she also had a long-held love for "Boys of Summer" which I soon turned into a raging fandom with a little help from Glenn's hotness. Seriously. ;)
