I thought people might want to talk about which ones they like, which ones they think are cheesy (and let's face it, there are elements of his videos which are cheesy, mainly because of the women he insists on putting in them). So here are my opinions of them in vaguely chronological order.

I Found Somebody - Eerily like Don's Johnny Can't Read in that they are wearing their album cover clothes & they both look uncomfortable in their first solo video. The 'chat up' thing doesn't really work for me. The 'performance' thing (with a young Al Garth) is OK.

The One You Love - Partly works, partly doesn't. He isn't that heartbroken and lovelorn and we know it. He looks so young there, it's weird.

Sexy Girl - Hmmm. Well. In a way it's funny. He looks good. But....

Smuggler's Blues - This is superb and is riveting from start to finish, Plaintiff or no Plaintiff. Some nice 'acting' and costume changes, plus 'Aguilas' spray painted in the toilet and he dies in the end. What more could you want? :D

The Heat Is On - Straightforward and sultry. Love it when he hits the mic with his fist. Love the stubble. But WHY the female saxophonist?

You Belong To The City - Another classic with him rescuing the damsel in distress (and then abandoning her next morning). If you ignore his constant smoking he looks good. He flutters his eyelashes at the start and walks into the New York traffic at the end. Nice stuff.

True Love - Either love or hate. It's my favourite, believe it or not. I love the black people in the bar. I shouldn't say it but I identify with the girl and want to be her. Plus no guitar and mic stand grabbing. Works for me.

Livin' Right - Horribly dated. The definition of 'la fromage'. Improves as he starts to get fit. At least he seems to be enjoying it. Mrs Livin' Right is in it.

Soul Searchin' - Would have been perfect except for the corny sub-plot where he reconciles with the woman. The 'environmental protest' thing is OK, because he looks concerned about it. He should have stood in front of the gospel choir, I think.

Some Kind Of Blue - Very nice! Mr Schmit makes an appearance! Shows off Glenn's perfect features. In this one you can ignore the woman for a change.

POMPOY - I have a theory about why the SW album was a commercial failure. The videos were too low key. Apart from the shots from the movie in this, its too dark and his face is in shadow most of the time. The idea is right but the execution is wrong.

I've Got Mine - Too much information in the LA ghetto scenes, etc. Distracts from him standing there looking out of place.

Love In The 21st Century - WHY? The hair, the outfit, the.... It's different. That's all I can say about it.

Sorrry if I've left any out. ;)

OK, let me try! I've been lucky enough to see all of these videos, so I can comment on all of them.

-------------

I Found Somebody - Cheesy indeed. The part where he hits on the girl is kind of cute but awkward, too.

The One You Love - I adore this video. You just want to reach out and give him a hug... or more. lol I think he pulls off "love lorn" well, and I like the way the represented the triangle - the different men dancing with her, the car, etc.

Sexy Girl - This song annoys me, so it's hard for me to enjoy the video.

Smuggler's Blues - Who could not like Smuggler's Blues? Other than his dying at the end, which was upsetting, the video is perfection. It's like a mini-movie and he looks terrific in it.

The Heat Is On - A little simplistic, but I agree the stubble works for him. The female saxophonist was perhaps to add a little bit of sex appeal... don't think that worked too well. lol

You Belong To The City - I love the sense of motion about this video. It really captures the sense of the unrelenting pace of the city.

True Love - I fall in the "hate" category - or at least the "strongly dislike." The opening with the teens is cringe-worthy, and while I too would like to be the girl being sung to, that's not enough to save it for me.

Livin' Right - Yuck. I get the joke but it's too cheesy for words.

Soul Searchin' - I like this one, including the reconciliation. The whole "contemplative Glenn" works for me.

Some Kind Of Blue - He looks incredible in this video.

POMPOY - Not enough to it, although it works well as a vehicle to promote Thelma and Louise because you see so much of them and so little of Glenn.

I've Got Mine - I love this song, but the video is tiresome.

Love In The 21st Century - He looks absoultely terrible in this video (yes I know it was deliberate) and the song kind of annoys me too, so it's not a favorite, to say the least.

I've only got access to the downloads from L&M's site which are all pretty blurry, but I'm preparing to do a little research prior to contributing to this. Tough having homework to do, isn't it?

Okay - I've already seen these, but I think I, too, need to do some more homework before commenting. The research will hopefully be interesting. http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/eek.gif Being as shallow as I am, and if my memory serves me correctly, I'll probably love them all just because of all the hotness. However, I am really going to try to be objective. :)

I'm being brave here. I actually find 'I've Found Somebody' quite appealing. I think he looks rather cute in his white suit and, for me, there is a bit of unspoken tension in the exchanges between him and the girl. Plus I was always a sucker for a man kissing a girl's hand.

As for Glenn's kiss...

I Found Somebody (http://www.glennfreyonline.com/solo/moviestv/ifoundsomebody.htm)

The One You Love (http://www.glennfreyonline.com/solo/moviestv/oneyoulove.htm)

I'm getting screen captures now from Smuggler's Blues and his hotness in that is just unreal!

Another serious one - "intense" and "moody" Glenn. I love it.

You Belong to the City (http://www.glennfreyonline.com/solo/moviestv/ybttc.htm)

BTW, I'd forgotten how strong that woman came on to Glenn in this video. When he tries to leave, she actually grabs his wrist, gets in his face, puts her hands on him and propositions him until he surrenders. You go girl!

I don't see it that way at all. She has been propositioned by the other guy in the bar. She is asking Glenn for protection. She's afraid to go back into the street on her own.

You really think so, Freypower? First, if she was really in danger, why would Glenn skip out on her? Second, she strokes his back and arm and smiles at him seductively. That doesn't look like a frightened woman to me. That looks like a woman on the make. Finally, Glenn is calling a cab. She came in a cab. Why couldn't she take cab home? She doesn't need to be in the streets at all, much less be afraid to walk home on them.

I always saw it the same way, soda. She got herself in over her head with the first guy, then Glenn comes along and she thinks, Hmmmm....

I always saw that video as a one night stand story.

Freypower
01-16-2006, 06:58 AM
If you put it that way I think there are elements of truth in both explanations, but I think the first guy has made her want to seek comfort.

Every time I read one of these posts I have to go back and check the video again. Now, 'You Belong To The City' is pretty good. Glenn looks fine, there's a bit of a storyline and of course the music is great. I agree with Soda here, I don't think the other guy is Glenn, and I also think the girl can look after herself. Mind you, Glenn has seen her in the bar before he goes in, so I think he has gone in there to check her out as well.

Glenn hasn't gone into the bar to check the woman out. It comes as a complete surprise to him that she's there. Where I disagree with others concerns her motivation in 'coming on' to him.

While we're on the topic, I find I like the darker videos better. Maybe it's the fact that he's more intense in them or just that it's a change from the happy guy we see during shows (whom I adore!) but whatever the reason, those are the ones I love watching the most. Obviously, Smuggler's Blues and You Belong to the City are the darkest, but I like the emotionally tense videos like The One You Love. I guess the exception to this would be I've Got Mine, which bores me.

Okay - my take on YBTTC is also that it is a very good video. I pretty much agree with soda's interpretation, including the constant motion in the video. As far as the girl - IMO she appears to be a rich, spoiled type. I don't see fear at all - emptiness and loneliness maybe, but not fear. I think Glenn sees her before he goes in to the bar and is checking her out, but for some unknown reason decides not to pursue her. However, when she puts the move on him, he's not gonna turn down a sure thing. However, by the way he leaves the next morning, it sure looks like it turns out to be only a one nighter.

Some Kind Of Blue is new for me as I haven't got it on a CD yet. He does look very fine, and you really feel for his pain and sadness.

I think he looks good in Soul Searchin' too. I like the idea of him being an ordinary guy with a regular, probably boring, job, but then becoming a bit out of the ordinary as he ponders on life. I personally like the flashbacks; I find it all too easy to imagine being any one of his women, and once again there is a kiss (sigh), and a happy ending for once.

I can deal with the goofy hair and the pink shirt in the "Livin Right" video. It's the crazy look on his face during the work out scenes that make me cringe. I think he's trying to look intense, but to me he looks kind of psycho. Cut down on the steroids, boy!

I agree. It is a nice fantasy to think of Glenn as the guy next door, who has a little fence just like the one outside my childhood home, who knows what it's like to have everyday problems. In that way, Soul Searchin' is very charming.

Yeeaa, your package arrived today, Nancy, and I watched the whole whitewater expedition and it's even more scary than I thought. He really does look exhausted at the end, (and all wet and tousled - yum!)

Does anyone think listing all of Glenn's videos on the Filmography page makes it too cluttered? Here's what it looks like now:

I've been meaning to post my comments in this thread for a while now, but haven't found the time. I was right with my first post. After completing my homework assignment and reviewing the videos, I came to the conclusion that I liked all of them. Even the ones that don't have much going for them other than the hot male singer - that's enough to keep me interested and watch. However, I do like some more than others, so I decided to rank them, which is always a very difficult task for me (in fact, I could change my mind with the order very easily if someone gives me a good reason). The order is on how much I like the videos, not the songs - although in a couple of cases, I was having a hard time between two, so how much I liked the song was the tiebreaker. Here goes:

1. YBTTC - I love how it comments and depicts the story of living in the city with the constant motion, and the one night stand. To me it says, even with all the activity and people, life can still be lonely.

2. Smuggler's Blues - Again, the video is so good at telling the story, but killing off Sugar at the end is disturbing for me.

3. I've Got Mine - If this video did a better job of telling the story, it would probably be my favorite since this is one of my favorite solo songs. I also wondered why Glenn used women primarily in the video to depict the rich people.

4. Soul Searchin' - I just like it a lot - it's sensitive and romantic.

5. I Found Somebody - I like the way this one depicts the story. I always thought the song portrayed the 70's and '80's fickle trend of falling in and out of love so easily, and to me that's exactly what the video says.

6. The One You Love - Love torn Glenn is HOT - make me want to just grab him and ... oh, you girls understand.

7. THIO - This one would be rated higher if it featured the hot male singer more instead of all those movie action shots.

8. Sexy Girl - Even though it's not one of my favorite songs, in this case, the video helps make the song more enjoyable. I think it is just cute.

9. True Love - This one is the the opposite of Sexy Girl. I love the song a lot more than the video, but guitarless Glenn is good (and HOT).

10. POMPOY - see the THIO.

11. Living Right - I think it's cute. It was meant to be a parody and it succeeds. And for me, even square-haired Glenn is hot. Apparently, Mrs. Right agreed.

12. Some Kind of Blue - Neither the song or the video are among my favorites. But there is not just one, but two, hot male singers in it, which makes it enjoyable to watch.

13. Living in the 21st Century - Unlike some of you, I love this song. I think the lyrics are very clever, and the music rocks. However, the video ranks last on my list because although the hotness is still there, you actually have to search for it beyond the bleach - and for me, that's a first.

And BTW FP - I also think their may be some validity to your theory about Strange Weather's failure due to the videos.

Interesting, dreamer. I'm surprised I've Got Mine is so high on your list - it's so drab to me - but a lot of your other assessments I agree with.

Soda - As far as I've Got Mine - it may be that my love for the song affects my rating of the video. I agree that I don't believe the video captures the essence of the song as well as it should. I think one reason I like the song and video is because it has some personal meaning to me. I once dated a guy who inherited a rather large sum of money, and I witnessed first hand that money does not buy happiness. I watched this once really nice man become increasingly guilty, paranoid, untrusting, uncaring, and unhappy as he struggled to come to terms with his "good" fortune. I may read more into the song than Glenn actually intended, but I relate the song to that relationship on so many levels. His unhappiness eventually lead to the end of our relationship, and I lost touch with him. But, I really hope he eventually resolved his issues, and found true happiness living the "good" life.

I see what you're saying, and I too love the song. Perhaps it's silly of me to be bothered by the fact that all the uncaring rich are women in it. Regarding the song itself, though, I can't fault it, and I think you can never read too much into a song. Whatever it means to you is valid.

It's a fact that showy rich women are perhaps more interesting to portray in a video like this than men in suits. Why? Who knows. The video could have been much better IMO but that is an interesting take you have on the song, Kay. I suppose we also have to bear in mind that L&M weren't able to get a complete version so we don't know if that's what the whole song looks like.

I love watching him sing it in Dublin because he really puts so much emotion into it and he obviously feels the song very deeply. It would be a good one for the Eagles to do, as I have said before.

*Squee* My kind of thread!!! I am a director, or that's what I want to be...especially of music videos...so I love dissecting them.

Unfortunately, I have not seen any of Glenn's. *hits forehead* Definitely will be checking out all these links!

"You Belong To The City" is my favorite song of Glenn's, and actually what ultimately made me buy my first album of his, that and my best friend's obsession with him ;) ...I've loved that song since it came out and had no idea it was him until just a few years ago! (Of course, I was very, very young at the time and obsessed with mermaids, and thought it was called "You Belong To The Sea" and was about a mermaid, but that's completely besides the point. ;) I really want to see this video, even if it does have cheesey 80's moments. "I've Got Mine"...I've had an idea for a video for that song ever since I first listened to it, so I'd sort of like to do a little video for it myself before seeing it, then compare the 2, LOL!

Man, I have some Frey-fandom catching up to do!

While I have big fat high quality files of Part of Me, Part of You and Heat Is On on my site as well as a link to The One You Love, I don't have any of the others on here. The main unofficial Eagles site I mentioned to you before has them all for download though, in nice small bite-size RealPlayer files that are easy to download. Those site admins post here under one name as "eaglesfans" so you can thank them for that. (You may remember them from The Ledge as HenleyFan).

It's great to read all the takes on Glenns videos. For me, so far, You Belong To the City wins, for similar reasons to Kay's, it's a great song (I typo'd snog there lol!!), I love the shots of Glenn walking through the streets, the action, the upfront way the woman propositions him and the implication of what goes on next. It's clever the way the Miami Vice scenes are cut in too.

I would put POMPOY higher up the list. Agreed there is not enough of Glenn but what there is is hot. And I love the song. I watched Thelma and Louise with my 18 year old son the other night after he said it was a great film (it was). I then embarrassed myself by making him sit through the video - once again I got that look, but I think he enjoyed the song!

Heck, I bought the movie FOR the video, and only recently watched the whole thing (I'd never seen it before). Shoot, Brad Pitt is hot in that! Not as compelling as Glenn though. Just hot in a nice eye candy way. lol

Wouldn't it be nice if Miami Vice had included Glenn's video for "You Belong to the City" in its Season 2 box set? Oh well.

I didn't know the second season of Miami Vice was out already! I have the first season box set--mainly to see the episode with Glenn--but I adored Don Johnson too. (I seem to have a thing for Dons....I see a pattern here...lol) It would've been nice if they had included the video, all right. You Belong to the City was so great in that episode where they went to New York.

All the music was great on Miami Vice. I remember in the last season, where Don Johnson's character married a singer played by Sheena Easton. The media began hounding them in one episode and they played Dirty Laundry in the background.

Both Dons---<sigh>

Just found a snippet of the video for I've Got Mine on MTV.com here: www.mtv.com/music/video/i...lpvid=8652 (http://www.mtv.com/music/video/index.jhtml?_lpvid=8652) . It's not the whole thing, but it's almost all of the first verse, which is part of what we were missing. Enjoy!

P.S. There are men on this part briefly - ironically, they are shown playing golf! I guess this is before he got on the golf kick or I doubt he would use it as a representation of the entertainment of out-of-touch rich people.
