THE EAGLES SOAR BACK TO TULSA newsok.com 11-12-08
By Brandy McDonnell

The Eagles didn’t need an opening act, flashy stage production or bombastic opening number to thrill an estimated 14,000 fans Tuesday night at the BOK Center (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=BOK+Center&CATEGORY=ATTRACTION).
The venerable band’s more than 35 years of hits, consummate musicianship and the madcap energy of guitarist/singer Joe Walsh (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Joe+Walsh&CATEGORY=PERSON) kept the appreciative audience flying high.
The classic country-rockers’ “Long Road Out of Eden” world tour brought them back to the BOK Center just two months after they played the new arena’s first concert.
The return engagement was booked because of the overwhelming demand for tickets to the sold-out grand-opening show. The popular band drew an eager near-capacity crowd for Tuesday’s Tulsa encore.
At the band’s 2002 show at Oklahoma City (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Oklahoma+City&CATEGORY=CITY)’s Ford Center (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Ford+Center&CATEGORY=ATTRACTION), the Eagles’ music (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Eagles+%28Musical+Group%29&CATEGORY=ORGANIZATION) proved much more potent live than recorded, and the same held true Tuesday in Tulsa.
The audience roared in anticipation as the stage lights revealed Don Henley (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Don+Henley&CATEGORY=PERSON), Glenn Frey (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Glenn+Frey&CATEGORY=PERSON), Timothy B. Schmit (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Timothy+B.+Schmit&CATEGORY=PERSON) and Walsh lined up in matching black suits with guitars in hands. Their voices were in fine form and their four-part harmony flawless as they opened with “How Long,” a country hit from their latest album, last year’s multi-platinum “Long Road Out of Eden.”
“We’re back,” Frey, the band’s spokesman, playfully announced. “Seems like only yesterday. I’m gonna have to think of new jokes and everything.”
Although Frey cracked that the show was part of the band’s “assisted living tour,” the Eagles expertly delivered about three hours of crowd-pleasing music. Each member got a turn in the spotlight as they played three more songs from the current album, “Busy Being Fabulous,” “Guilty of the Crime” and “I Don’t Want to Hear Any More.”
An evocative trumpet solo heralded the start of the Spanish-flavored favorite “Hotel California,” with Henley singing and pounding the drums, Walsh and sideman Steuart Smith (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Steuart+Smith&CATEGORY=PERSON) (standing in for the song’s writer, Don Felder (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Don+Felder&CATEGORY=PERSON), who was fired from the band in 2001) scorching through the familiar guitar byplay, and the fervent fans grooving along.
That the band played its signature song early in the show is a testament to the astonishing depth of the Eagles catalog. Schmit fractured hearts with his falsetto ballad “I Can’t Tell You Why,” Frey spun his cheating tale “Lyin’ Eyes” with the help of a crying violin, and Walsh’s impressive slide guitar work got a boost from a four-piece horn section on “In the City.”
But Henley stole the first half of the show with his haunting wailing and precision skins work on the atmospheric rocker “Witchy Woman” and his bittersweet solo hit “Boys of Summer.”
After an intermission, the band got back on the “Long Road Out of Eden.” The quartet started its second set sitting on stools at front of the stage and crooning “No More Walks in the Woods” a cappella in lovely four-part harmony. The sad song set off a string of pretty ballads, “Waiting in the Weeds,” “No More Cloudy Days” and “Love Will Keep Us Alive,” leading up to a huge crowd sing-along on “Take It to the Limit.”
For much of the show, the Eagles played their cool California (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=California&CATEGORY=STATE) sound with icy cold efficiency. Their skilled musicianship and seasoned professionalism propelled them through the hits, but they didn’t seem to be having much fun.
But the clever fingers, wacky energy and quirky humor of Walsh transformed the show into a party. His blazing guitar and passionate wail on the James Gang (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=James+Gang&CATEGORY=PERSON) favorite “Walk Away” got the crowd to its feet, and he cleverly merged Don Williams (http://www.newsok.com/keysearch/?er=1&CANONICAL=Don+Williams&CATEGORY=PERSON)’ classic “Tulsa Time” with “Funk 49.”
He donned a “helmet cam” to film the audience and added a few extra lines of nonsense to his already comical solo hit “Life’s Been Good.”
His energy seemed to spark his bandmates to loosen up a bit on the rockers “Heartache Tonight” and “Life in the Fast Line.”
When the keyed-up crowd thunderously demanded an encore, and the band slowed it down for the satisfying favorites “Take It Easy” and “Desperado.”
In keeping with the peaceful, easy finish, Henley chose not to throw his drum sticks into the crowd after the show, instead carefully instructing fans to pass them back to a little boy in the audience.

Hi guys--I just talked to my OK buddy, who went to the concert with Jess last night, and they had a terrific time! Jess doesn't have her laptop so she can't post until she gets back home later today, but she did take her roses and threw them at Glenn when they came back for the encore, and she said he picked them up and danced around with them. They said the crowd was a little subdued, but the guys sounded great as always. Don gave his drumsticks to a little boy who was sitting very close to Jess, and she said that was a sweet moment. They only did one encore since they were flying out to Nashville for the CMAs tonight.

Jess will post a full report later!

I hope he's serious about this. he's a funny guy and I've never understood why he limits himself to the "old standards."

Great review. I hope that little boy really did get those drumsticks. I've seen selfish adult fans attempting to grab stuff from children at some concerts.

And thanks for the update, DonFan! Can't wait to hear more!

Funny you should say that, bec she said that when Don stood in front of them with the drumsticks, everyone was waving their arms and going crazy trying to get them. He just stood there pointing at the little boy and he didn't let go of the drumsticks until everyone realized that was who he wanted to have them.

I'm back. I knew i should've taken my laptop with me but i had already overpacked (for one night) and i didn't want to have to lug around another bag. I've been getting my pictures ready and i'm also working on a full report for all of you so bear with me here. I'm trying to get it all done before the CMA's start. I'm definitely suffering PEW and i've been saying to myself all day long that i want more Eagles. I guess the CMA's tonight will be the end of my Eagles excitement till i see the them in Tampa in January.

I apologize in advance for this being a little long. I’ll first post the set list along with the between song chatting. I’ll post my thoughts and favorite moments in a separate post.

The review that DF posted is pretty accurate as to how the concert went.

How Long
Busy Being Fabulous (Glenn’s comments following BBF- “We’re back. Seems like only yesterday. I’m going to have to think of new jokes and everything. It’s good to be here tonight. Check your tickets. This is the Eagles Assisted Living Tour. We’re going to play a lot of new songs and even more of your old favorites.”
I Don’t Want To Hear Any More
Guilty Of The Crime
Hotel California
Peaceful Easy Feeling
I Can’t Tell You Why
Witchy Woman (Glenn referred to this song as being from their satanic country rock rhythm and blues period.)
Lyin Eyes (Glenn talked about how it took him and Don to write this song in 2 days and how now it would take them 2 years. He admits that it is a long song but he says it wrote itself)
Boys Of Summer
In The City
The Long Run (Don didn’t talk till just before this song and did his usual chat about doing one more song before taking a short break and then they’ll come back and play for a long time. He really got the crowd cheering when he changed part of the lyrics to “all the debutants in Tulsa.” Glenn and Don had a cute moment when Don sang “we ain’t shaking.” They both shook there hands and had a little laugh. When Don sings “I used to stay out till the break of day” I’m pretty sure this was the part when he looked over at Joe and Joe gave a big smile and pointed at himself. It was really cute when Joe did that.)

Intermission (the lines were ridiculous but I made it back with a minute to spare)

No More Walks In The Wood
Waiting In The Weeds (When this song started, the lady sitting next to me was asking her husband what song they were playing and they both guessed that it was from the new album. In my head i was screaming "are you kidding me?")
No More Cloudy Days (Before this song Glenn welcomed everybody back to the second half of the show at the B-O-K. He said he was corrected when last time he called it the Bock Center. He gave his apologies to Johann Sebastian Bach. See, he did make a few new jokes. He also did the bit that he’s been doing about NMCD being track 8 on the new album. He then said something about going to the Weather Channel before going into the song. I noticed during the song that Joe accidentally dropped his pick but grabbed one off of his mike stand and moved along like nothing happened.)
Love Will Keep Us Alive (Tim’s turn to say Hello. He asked if anyone was at the last concert at the BOK and there were a lot of people around me that raised their hands. Tim said it looks like you all brought a few friends. Timmy did his normal speech about Paul Carrack but I honestly didn’t get to hear it all because there was a lot of commotion going on just to the right of me with some people getting back to their seats late from intermission. I thought a few people were going to get into an argument because somebody was in the wrong seat. I only knew that I was in the right seat and wasn’t about to move. I was watching this happen then I looked up at the stage and saw Don and Glenn watching what was going on. An usher finally came over and found that someone was in the wrong seat and made her move. Everything was all good after that but you should’ve seen the looks on Don and Glenn’s face. It’s like they really wanted things to get straightened out so people around them could enjoy the rest of the show.
Take It To The Limit (once again TITTL got one of the biggest responses from the crowd as far as singing along. Everyone around me, including myself, was very much into the song.)
Long Road Out Of Eden
Somebody
Walk Away
One Of These Nights

Band Introductions- Glenn said “Hit me Dave” and yelled out a cute little “Ooww” as the spotlight shown on him. The entire band intro was pretty much the same as previous concerts that have been posted but Glenn did mention that Will has been working a lot with Dancing With The Stars. He joked “Will’s been doing a bunch of the music for Dancing With The Stars and he never makes a mistake.” All four of the guys received a very big applause and cheers. Glenn did a cute little dance as Don was hitting the drums for Tim’s intro. Tim introduced Glenn as “Our fearless leader” and they played My Girl while Glenn sang a small bit of the song. He called Detroit “the fertilizer of my genius” and said “Detroit, where mother is half a word.” Don was introduced as “The pride of Linden, Texas.” Don got a fairly long ovation. And as Glenn said “last but not lost” Joe came out and received what I think was the loudest ovation of all. Joe smiled and waved and said “I feel good tonight. I can’t help it. How many people are here tonight? Raise your hand.”

Life’s Been Good (Instead of saying that his mazarati, sorry about the spelling here, does 185, Joe was blurting out a whole bunch of numbers really fast. This took me by surprise. I didn’t know what he was saying until I heard the last few numbers that he said. He also changed the lyrics to “I have a limo, ride in the back. I lock the doors and ride around with Borrack.” Now I remember last time he mentioned Borracks name and received many boos but this time I only heard about 2 or 3 people booing. I love how he changes up the lyrics in this song. He really brings up the crowd when he plays. When he sings “they write me letters, tell me Glenn’s great” OMG!! You all should have seen the look on Glenn’s face. He shrugged his shoulders and gave the cutest smile that I have ever seen. It was a look that could make your knees weak. I wish I had a picture of that moment.)
Dirty Laundry
Funk 49 (During the intro, Joe was strumming the music to Tulsa Time as Glenn sang a bit of the song. It was really neat to see them go a little outside their usual program. Glenn and Joe went right into their little battle of the guitars that they do before jumping right into the song)
Heartache Tonight
Life In The Fastlane

Encore:
Take It Easy (Glenn changed the lyrics to “Standing on a corner in Tulsa, Oklahoma” this also got a huge response from the crowd.)
Desperado (Just like in the past, Don let the crowd sing the part of “let somebody love you” and he gave everybody a smile and nod of approval.)

The Eagles put on an excellent performance. They were amazing. The crowd did seem to be fairly reserved, sitting down for most of the show. I was sometimes feeling a little bit awkward being one of the few in the front to be standing at times but how can somebody sit down when the Eagles are rocking out?

Here is a nice little post from one fan's blog about last night's concert:
********************************
The Eagles concert was a blast. They played a ton of songs and had lots of energy. Their harmonies were out of this world and the musicianship was excellent. Joe Walsh is one goofy dude and he’s not my favorite vocalist, but he can flat out play the guitar. For an encore, they played “Take it Easy” and “Desperado.” A perfect way to end the night.

Here’s what is fascinating to me about The Eagles. I love them. My parents love them. My boys will love them (oh yes, they will, I have foreseen it). Their music crosses generations in a magical way. It’s country, it’s rock, it’s hard, it’s mellow, it’s easy to listen to, and hard to not sing along.
******************
That last line is perfect--it really sums up their universal appeal.

What an AMAZING night!!! I had an incredible time!! I didn’t lose my voice like I did last time but my throat is a bit soar. I’ll start from the beginning. We got into Tulsa around 3 pm. We had to stop by the BOK Center first because I had to pick my mom’s tickets that were never mailed to her. As soon as we walked inside we could see the lifesize cutouts. I wanted to grab those things and run but they had them roped off again and there was facility staff standing near by. But the thought really did cross my mind.

We kind of took our time getting ready, which nearly turned out to be a mistake because next thing we know it was almost 7:15 and the concert was going to be starting in about 30 minutes. Our hotel was about 5 blocks away so we were going to have to do some serious speed walking. We got about half a block from the hotel when I realized that I left the roses in the room and my friend also left the signs that she made. We hurried back to the room and then rushed to the BOK Center…my feet are paying the price for forgetting those roses but it was sooo worth it. We made it inside and found our seats with a few minutes to spare before the lights went down. And then there they were in all there total hotness. I couldn’t believe how close I was….2nd row center with a very clear view of Don and Glenn directly in front of me. Thank goodness the lady in front of me was short. She also sat down for the majority of the show which worked out well for me.

They all looked so good. It’s hard to believe that they are all in there 60’s now because they sure don’t look it at all. I’m one in favor of the suits. They wear them well. I noticed first that Don was wearing “the boots”. Joe had on some all black tennis shoes that had some funky looking designs on them. Glenn had on a matching tie and belt that had some sparkles/glitter on them. Towards the end of the concert I saw that Tim was wearing bracelets and a necklace. Oh, I just remembered that I saw Joe wearing a thin red bracelet on his right wrist. I don’t recall seeing Joe wear jewelry in recent concert pics. All four of the guys looked to be freshly shaved. Stuart was the only one that had some stubble…I think that look suits him.

I witnessed the spitting from Glenn but he wasn’t the only one. I saw some from Tim and Joe too, but none from Don. I was so glad to be able to see Don behind the drums. Last time I was too far to the right and couldn’t see his face but I had a perfect view this time. I thought Joe had some amazingly beautiful guitars. Glenn also had a couple that I hadn’t seen before. I smiled to myself when I saw the guitar Don didn’t know was his in the FW1 dvd.

It was so exciting being able to make eye contact and get a response from the guys. I was able to get a few smiles and nods out of Glenn and a few nods with Joe but Tim didn’t seem to want to budge. I didn’t see him smile at all till the very end.

One of the signs that my friend had said “Take me to Nashville” I held that one up and Glenn saw it and smiled. We also had a sign that said “I’ll take Frey’s with that” Glenn had a little laugh with that one too and gave a nod. I threw the roses on stage right after Life in the Fastlane. Just like last time, Glenn picked them up and was dancing with them. When they came back on stage for the encore I got a wink from Glenn. I did remember to blow kisses for those on here that requested them. But I couldn’t believe it when I actually got a kiss blown back from Don. You better believe I caught that kiss and will never let it go.

The concert was incredible and I can’t wait to do it again in Tampa. The guys looked and sounded so great!!! They are definitely the best there is, was, and ever will be.

Oh Jess-thanks so much for the great review and pictures. I went thru them rather fast so I want to go back thru them and look at them closer. Many thanks for the beautiful pics of Timothy. Sorry to hear he wasn't his usual smiling, moving self Tuesday night. I hope he gets it together before next Tuesday. They didn't look real happy last night at the awards either, is it possible that they are getting a bit burned out? I sure hope not!

I loved your whole review but especially "Joe came out and received what I think was the loudest ovation of all. Joe smiled and waved and said “I feel good tonight. I can’t help it. How many people are here tonight? Raise your hand." He just cracks me up!!!

Glad you will get to see them again in January! And I sure can't wait till next Tuesday!

Thanks for the added details, peek! Sounds like you really charmed the guys, especially Glenn! (OK, Tim wasn't into it but oh well, you can't have it all!) That Frey sign cracked me up.

Well he better be a little more "happy" next Tuesday or I'm throwing Katie up on that stage and that should get him moving!! She was drooling all over the tv at him on the awards last night. This could be the first mother/daughter fight for an Eagle at a concert they have ever seen! She obviously gets her taste from her mommy-smart kid!!!

Oooh Willie, you should start a mother daughter fight right in front of Timothy and let him know you're fighting over him - that'll get his attention!

I only noticed one camera nazi about 3 songs after intermission. He was behind me telling people "no pictures"

I forgot to mention the part about the little boy getting the drum sticks. He wasn't far from me. Just one row back and a couple of seats over to the right. Don was at the front of the stage waving to everybody then turned around and asked for the drum sticks. People all around me were going crazy when they saw this. With one gesture Don got everybody to back off. He pointed right at the boy and everybody turned and saw who he wanted to have the sticks. He handed them off to the security gaurd and then to the boy. Not one person dared to try to take them from him. Don watched the whole time with such a serious look to make sure the boy got them then gave the kid a smile and a wave. Such a sweet thing for Don to do.

As I was leaving my seat i heard some people trying to buy the drumsticks from the boy but the kids dad wasn't about to let those go.

Well, i think it's because there was such a demand for tickets when they opened the BOK on Sept. 6. Tickets sold out in less than an hour for the first show. A second (and i hate that they put it this way) "final" Eagles concert was anounced about a week before the grand opening.

That was definitely a moment that I won't ever forget. I still get all smiley and giggly every time i think about it. I bought a poster at the concert that i want to get framed along with my tickets from both Tulsa shows but i can't decide which picture i want to include with it. It'll probably be the one with all four guys after the encore but i really love the roses pic.
