Thanks to TBF for the suggestion. Here are mine:

1. Glenn Frey
2. Don Henley
3. John Lennon
4. Paul McCartney
5. Van Morrison
6. Mick Jagger
7. Bob Dylan
8. Robert Plant
9. Elton John
10. Mark Knopfler /Neil Young (tie)

I realise that Dylan's singing is not for everybody, but I cannot leave him out. As for Knopfler, ditto, but although he may not have the most 'tuneful' voice or a great deal of range, I defy anyone to hear him sing Romeo & Juliet and not get a lump in their throat.

Honourable mention to Randy Newman, whose singing also is not for everybody, but he does it for me.

My favourite female singer is Kate Bush. There is nobody like her, although I agree with Rolling Stone about Aretha. I don't think I can do a Top 10, at least not yet.

This is pretty off the cuff, but these are the ones that immediately came to mind:

1. Don Henley
2. David Gilmour
3. Neil Young
4. Tom Waits
5. Robert Plant
6. Glenn Frey
7. Randy Newman
8. Morrissey
9. Jeff Buckley
10. Phil Lynott

I'd also like to fit Jackson Browne in there somewhere. Paul Young too, at his best, had a gorgeous rough, soulful voice that I adore. More honourable mentions to Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. As for female singers, I admire Stevie Nicks, Annie Lennox, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell & Joan Armatrading.

Hmm....I'm almost embarrassed to admit that most of my favorite would be people that hardly anyone has heard of lol

1. Don Henley
2. Russ Lee
3. Bryan Adams
4. Phil Collins
5. Steve Perry
6. Richie Sambora
8. Bono
9. Glenn Frey
10. Robert Plant

**decided to edit and add my "real" top 10 list regardless of well knowns or not with a couple alterations.......so new list would probably be something like the following**

1. Don Henley
2. Russ Lee
3. Marc Broussard
4. Jonny Lang
5. Bryan Adams
6. Steve Perry
7. Kelly Clarkson
8. Glenn Frey
9. David Cook
10. Phil Collins

Well, educate us, Maleah ;)

 I decided to stick with pretty much all "well-knowns." ;)

But my list would have otherwise included:

Marc Broussard
Jonny Lang
Kenny Hinson
Kelly Clarkson (yeah yeah I know but she's awesome!)
David Cook (again...I know....but awesome! lol)
Whitney Houston (I know a lot of posters here aren't fans of the "power vocalists" or the vocal runs....but I LOVE it! :) )
Martina McBride
Stevie Nicks
Wynonna Judd
the guy that sings "Long Train Runnin'" for the Doobie Brothers (LOVE his voice but never learned his name! lol Same with the lead singer for Boston)

But then...if we're sticking to just rock 'n roll singers....that would narrow it right down LOL

Freypower
11-17-2008, 07:44 PM
The Doobies' singer before Michael McDonald was Tom Johnston. Boston's singer was the late Brad Delp.

The person on your first list I haven't heard of is Russ Lee. On your second list I haven't heard of Jonny Lang & Kenny Hinson.

I am reviving this topic because I never did get to it. And I was reminded of it earlier while watching YouTube stuff.

1) Jonny Lang (cannot tell you what his voice does to me!!-besides, he's good to look at)
2) Timothy B Schmit :inlove:
3) Benjamin Orr (The Cars)
4) Jim Morrison
5) Robert Plant
6) David Gilmour
7) Brian Connolly (Sweet)
8) Axl Rose
9) Chad Kroeger (Nickelback)
10) Steve Perry

Honorable Mention
Geddy Lee
Steven Piercy (Ratt)

To be honest with you, up until recently was not real fond of Timothy's solo stuff, I know sounds really funny and I'm embarrassed to admit it. I guess all the guys I have pretty much always thought of as a group. I recently started pulling out solo stuff from all the guys and gotta say I now cannot stop playing Timothy solo stuff!!! Mad at myself for not really paying more attention to the solo efforts! Live and LEARN!!!

Maleah--I finally got around to going on YouTube for Marc Broussard--he is amazing! Love the blues and he is definitely good at singing them! Wow. I will be hunting down his cd's shortly. How many does he have out? I will have to do some research on him. How long has he been in the business and how did I miss him? Thanks!

Willie, just a side note again. haha If you like Chad Kroeger you should give David Cook a listen! You probably have heard him since he won American Idol.....heck.....you may not even like him. haha But his voice reminds me a lot of Chad's except I even like it better! lol

Oh and I dropped you a PM about Marc's music ;)

I also think that David Cook is great. And to think that he had no intention of auditioning for American Idol, he was there to keep his brother company (or so he says)

My top 10 - not in any particular order

David Cook
Elton John
Don Henley
Glenn Frey
Paul McCartney
Peter Cetera
Barbra Streisand
Rod Stewart
Celine Dion
Josh Groban

If I don't actually have to rank them, I think I can list my top 10. My ranking has changed throughout different periods of my life, but the core singers have remained the same for the most part (an occasional substitution may take place...)

Bruce Springsteen
John Lyon (Southside Johnny)
Don Henley
Glenn Frey
Billy Joel
John Mellencamp
Elvis Costello
John Mayer
Steve Winwood
James Taylor

Karla Bonoff
Basia
Carly Simon
(I guess I cheated and put the women in a separate list because I couldn't narrow it down below 13 too easily.)

MikeA
12-02-2008, 10:13 AM
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Janis Joplin
Buddy Guy
Tommy Bolin
Stevie Nicks
Dilana Smith
John Lennon
Muddy Waters
Robert Plant
Johnny Lang (almost identical to SRV...gotta like HIM)

With the exception of Nicks, Bolin and Lennon, all of these guys are Icons of Blues. In reality, a lot of Lennon's work was based on the Blues. Might make the argument that Dilana is not a Blues Singer, but my God, her voice ought to be wailing the Blues! But each of these artists, I feel put heart and SOUL into their vocals. Henley was a close runner for me, but I think the ones listed do edge him out to my particular ear.

There's a difference between "favorite singer" and "favorite overall musician" so I'm going to focus on vocal power. This includes those who may not have a technically "beautiful" voice with lots of range, but contain enough emotion in their vocals to lift the song to the next level. I'm certain I've forgotten some but this is off the top of my head (just for kicks I linked to some examples of their vocal prowess).

1. Stevie Nicks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3KIlPUCSwE)
2. Glenn Frey
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuZkJhL5OnU) 3. Sarah McLachlan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CbAjj80NIM)
4. Don Henley (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvBHKRILUWQ)
5. Bruce Springsteen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rGFfO5fUvE)
6. Bono (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu_h_FtWbGU)
7. Whitney Houston (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EbYmMb4lR4)
8. Bette Midler (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pek0EUtfik)
9. Billy Joel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgmJ1miBzek)
10. Lindsey Buckingham (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJyzijG0I0k)

Honorable mention:
Ladies: Aretha Franklin, Nancy Wilson, Grace Slick, Linda Ronstadt, Kelly Clarkson, Roberta Flack, Amy Lee, Jennifer Hudson, Annie Lennox, Trisha Yearwood, Ella Fitzgerald, Celine Dion, Christine McVie, Chrissie Hynde
Guys: Nat King Cole, George Michael, Paul McCartney, Josh Groban, Phil Collins, Chris Isaak, JD Souther, Jackson Browne, Bob Seger, George Strait, Dan Fogelberg, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, Randy Meisner

I know that one or two of you listed Johnny Lang in your top 10--a blues singer I don't really know. However, I read just today that his younger sister, Jesse Langseth, is in American Idol! I don't know if she survived Hollywood Week, as I don't know who she is either. However, I figured if I passed on this bit of trivia, those of you who were interested could do the leg work to find out if she had talent to match her brother's!

EV-Now you went and got me started!!! Here's a brief Jonny history:

He was 13 when his first album was released and 14 when his first single hit the charts called Lie To Me--they called him "the 14 year old with the 20 year smoking habit" because of his voice.

He just turned 28 on January 29th. And yes he is hot---then he opens his mouth and you just want to melt because of that voice.

Here are a couple of YouTube videos but check out more of his stuff if you like a deep raspy voice like his. That is why you find him in the #1 spot on this list for me! And can the man play a guitar? AMAZING!!

Try these out!

Remember he was only 14 when he recorded and did this video. Lie To Me It will amaze you!

The Lie To Me video is from 14 years ago (when Jonny was only 14 himself) and she would of only been 10 or 11 and I think those girls are older in the video.

Glad you liked them. Hope you check out some more of his stuff. I can't express how wonderful a singer and guitarist I think he is and I'm always more than happy to spread the word and convert others! :shy:

I don't know why he hasn't made it big but he's definently well known within the music circle! He's played MANY shows with BB King and when Stevie Wonder was inducted into the HOF (I think that's what it was?), I read somewhere that he requested Jonny sing his song "Livin' For The City" because he enjoyed it so much.

I think I would have to edit my list now that I have become an obsessed.....I mean dedicated.....Elton John fan. :hilarious: In fact, I don't even know if I could rate them in any order now. So I'll just say that my top 10 includes (in various order)

Don Henley
Elton John
Russ Lee
Marc Broussard
Jonny Lang
Adele
Kenny Hinson
David Cook
Kelly Clarkson
Whitney Houston

with very very close honorable mentions going to Bono, Bob Seger, Stevie Nicks, Celine Dion, Steve Perry, Bryan Adams, and many more that I'm forgetting I'm sure. lol

I remember Jakob Dylan from the Wallflowers in the nineties - are they still together? This is a cool song by them:

No, sadly The Wallflowers broke up a couple of years ago. It sticks in my mind because they played a venue near here on their last tour, but I couldn't go because my family was on the way back from Florida that day. I remember thinking, "Oh well, I'll catch them next time" and was heartbroken when they broke up shortly after.

I went back to find my list out of curiosity. I'd say for the most part, it's still very close to the same other than I'd probably toss Axl down to the honorable mention (mainly because he just continues to p*ss me off) and replace him with Don Henley and have to add at least a dozen new names to the honorable mentions because I don't know why I only listed 2 of them. I mean where is Paul Rodgers, Sammy Hagar, Elton John, Freddie Mercury, Mick Jagger, Steve Winwood, and my new found obsession, Chris Rea, etc....?

1) Jonny Lang (cannot tell you what his voice does to me!!-besides, he's good to look at)
2) Timothy B Schmit :inlove:
3) Benjamin Orr (The Cars)
4) Jim Morrison
5) Robert Plant
6) David Gilmour
7) Brian Connolly (Sweet)
8) Axl Rose
9) Chad Kroeger (Nickelback)
10) Steve Perry

Honorable Mention
Geddy Lee
Steven Piercy (Ratt)

2) Colm Wilkinson

7) Don Henley
8) Celine Dion

I suppose I should revise my own list.

1. Glenn Frey
2. Mark Knopfler
3. John Lennon
4. Paul McCartney
5. Robert Plant
6. Mick Jagger
7. Don Henley
8. Bob Dylan
9. Van Morrison
10. Randyy Newman

Honourable mentions to Eric Clapton, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Neil Young, the late Warren Zevon & John Fogerty. All I've done there is change the order around.

I don't have a list of favourite female singers but they include Kate Bush, Stevie Nicks, Chrissie Hynde (more for her songwriting skills), Barbra Streisand (when she doesn't overdo it) & Annifrid Lyngstad from Abba, who in my opinion is a far superior singer to Agnetha Faltskog, but didn't sing as many songs. I love Joni Mitchell's songs but not always her singing style. Aretha Franklin goes without saying. Linda Ronstadt in my opinion never stamped her own personality on all those well known songs by other artists she covered (possible exception being the Heart Like A Wheel album). Other singers like Tina Turner & Joan Armatrading, who I saw live, I nevertheless don't count them as favourite singers.

Not much of a change here! But after they reformed in 2008 and released a new CD, I would make some inclusion for Spandau Ballet's lead singer Tony Hadley. It was amazing to see them live!

So to repost

In Order
Glenn:heart: Frey
Chris de Burgh
Don Henley
Robbie Williams
Billy Joel
Tony Hadley
Bryan Ferry
Tim McGraw
Kenny Rogers
Elton John

I would also give honourable mention to Josh Turner who had a few good hits in the last few years.
Of course these can change depending on the mood I'm in! Although the top man never will! :inlove:

I've been meaning to bump this topic for a while, and I've finally got round to it. I must admit I struggle to make a proper ranking, but I'll do one based solely on my enjoyment of their voices. I'll start by naming my top three, which I am fairly sure of.

Robert Plant
Don Henley
David Gilmour

Plant and Henley, to me, are the two best rock singers. Their voices have such distinctive personalities and I can't quite bear to split them. I suppose I can say Robert is my favourite British vocalist and Don my favourite American vocalist! Time has perhaps been kinder to Don's golden throat than Robert's, but when I hear Robert's vocals on Celebration Day, I don't hear an old guy singing the Led Zeppelin catalogue, I hear the one and only Robert Plant (I hope that makes sense... what I'm getting at is that I think his voice remains unique and infused with genuine character, even if he's less spectacular than in his youth). Gilmour's inclusion is perhaps more controversial, but I love the way his voice sounds and the range of songs that he can sing. I love both his more aggressive voice used on angrier or more angsty songs like Time, Dogs or Welcome To The Machine as well as his softer, more wistful vocals on the likes of Wish You Were Here.

Beyond these three, I know Stevie Nicks would be fourth. Beyond that I'm not quite so sure.

Rest of top ten in approximate order:
Glenn Frey
Neil Young
James Taylor
Ian Gillan (Deep Purple)
Peter Gabriel
Mark Knopfler

Honourable mentions:
Randy Meisner (my favourite backing/harmony vocalist, I love his voice, but he doesn't sing enough lead vocals to be in my top ten)
Bob Dylan (!)
Lindsey Buckingham
Ronnie van Zant (loved the attitude of his vocals, he was perfect for Skynyrd's sound too)
Michael Stipe (R.E.M.) (love his accent and how he can put emotion into seemingly random sets of words)

I'll admit Mark Knopfler is not a great singer technically, but I almost always enjoy listening to him. I can honestly say I could listen to nobody else except Knopfler singing for hours, and I'm not sure how many other vocalists I can say that of. Bob Dylan does not make my top ten, although I do think that the idea that he can't sing is a misconception. He doesn't have the most beautiful voice, no, but he certainly could sing (at least in his peak years!) I think his vocals on songs like One Of Us Must Know and You're A Big Girl are great, and his voice certainly suits a lot of his music, which is often very dry and in some cases quite sarcastic/bitter.

I notice some people in this thread have done separate lists for male and female vocalists, but I have to be honest and admit I'd struggle to do a Top 10 female singers - Stevie deserves her place in my overall top ten on merit, her voice is extremely special to me and there isn't another female singer who comes close for me. I do like Christine as well, but Stevie is queen as far as I'm concerned! The truth is I mostly listen to male singers. That's not to say there are women whose vocals I like even though they aren't members of Fleetwood Mac - honest! I like the vocals that Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris contribute to some of my Neil Young and Bob Dylan albums, for instance, and although it's just one song I love Clare Torry's Great Gig In The Sky vocal. I admire Joni Mitchell, but more as a songwriter than a singer.

It would perhaps be interesting for me to try and pick one particularly great vocal by all of the singers I listed, but I think I should leave that for another day.

If I don't ever listen to their music, can they be a favorite? I've done some deleting! I don't think I can list 10 of each that I consistently listen to!

My favorite male singers:

5. Elton John

Favorite female singers:

As far as most beautiful voices: guys haven't changed, but I find I think Nancy Wilson outdoes Martina McBride. Maybe it's because I prefer rock over country.

I just hope I'm being accurate.. As I was reading the first few pages, I kept remembering of those in my head I forgot.. I'm not going to pick vocal range, etc., just a voice I like... Even if it's one song that is convincing. It's hard to distinguish just the vocals, as the music plays a part, it has to, so the other members should get consideration.
