Along with the Stones, Beatles, and sure, The Eagles, it is my opinion that "The Who" were one of the "defining" bands back in the 60's/70's. I know I wore out two sets of vinyls listening to "Tommy". I'd love to see them perform.

I just went to the "official" site for "The Who". Couldn't read the interview with Townsend unless I joined. Thinking it was a a matter of filling out a membership form and getting a password, I did fill it out. It demanding a lot of information...full address, phone number, name...all that stuff. But I did get "signed up" and happily went back, logged in and blistered a trail to the Townsend interview.

WOAH! Can't go there until you "upgrade". So I click on "upgrade". It takes you to another page in the "Store" where you have to pay a $50 package fee to get full membership, a tee-shirt and I think a CD! But until you pay for all of that, you don't get any of the inside stuff.

Just don't do it unless you intend to pay the $50 to join. You can still browse around the site. Had I known that the culmination of my efforts were to pay $50 for membership, I'd never have filled out all of that personal information.

I didn't have to give a credit card number though!:censored:

I have mixed feelings about the Who. While I think Pete Townshend is a great guitarist and songwriter he can be somewhat 'preachy'. I thought at the time of punk/New Wave his attempts to realign himself with the 'new kids in town' was extremely awkward. He should have been proud enough of his own legacy. We have the DVD of their Royal Albert Hall show where they have guests like Noel Gallagher during Won't Get Fooled Again. I won't be going to the Sydney show.

I find him somewhat sanctimonious, that's all. He appears to sometimes think he has all the answers. There are other rock stars who have a similar approach. This is only my opinion.

I have to weigh in on this. I've been a Who fan for many years.
I had the pleasure of seeing the entire group of original members
in concert twice before Keith Moon died. I'll have to say, I don't
think there was a better LIVE band on the planet back in their heyday.

I got to see them again when they did a major US tour back in 2006.
We drove 6 & 1/2 hours from Kentucky to Atlanta on the day before
Thanksgiving just to see what is now refered to as The Who 2 (Pete
& Roger). I'm happy to report, these guys can still rock. Pete still does
the windmills while the power chords keep coming (although his jumps
are fewer and lower). Roger can still sing, but had a few nights of vocal
issues during the long tour of 2006. He still manages the trademark
scream on "Won't Get Fooled Again".

The replacement band members (for Keith and John) do a great job,
but no one could truly replace these two. Zak Starkey (Ringo Starr's
son) is a great drummer. Much better drummer than his father.
Pino Palladino is on the bass and does a respectable job. But he's no
"thunder fingers". Rounding out the band, John "Rabbit" Bundren on
keyboards and Pete's brother, Simon, on guitar.

And, by the way, I'm a member of thewho.com and paid the $50.00 and
thought I got my money's worth. Access to presale tickets was the main
reason I joined. The t-shirt and cd were just a bonus.
The bottom line is, I think if you get a chance to see these guys now,
you won't be disappointed.

Though I will probably skip membership for now in the Fan Club, I will certainly and enthusiastically remain a strong supporter of the band.

I probably wouldn't pay the $50 now for a membership unless they
decided to tour the US again. Although they played a few dates here
this year, a major tour is not in the works anytime soon.

Other benefits of the Who forum included Pete and Roger answering
questions submitted by members of the message board. That was kind
of cool. We were even given first crack at tickets for "VH1 Rock Honors:
The Who" concert out in LA earlier this year. I couldn't work it out to
go, but it was nice to know I could have. Pete even made a "surprise"
visit to a who.com summit get-together before the Rock Honors show.

Just like on this message board, I met a bunch of nice people who had
the love of a band in common with each other. Many pre-concert
get-togethers were planned on the message board and I met some
members in person at the Atlanta concert I went to. It's been a good
experience.

In a related matter, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey were honored
in Washington this past Sunday night at the Kennedy Center Honors.
They were toasted at a White House reception and State Department
dinner. Also honored along with them were Barbra Streisand, Morgan
Freeman, George Jones, and Twyla Tharp.

A two hour broadcast of the event will air December 30th at 9 PM ET/PT
on CBS. Joss Stone sings a version of The Who's "My Generation" and
Rob Thomas pays tribute to The Who with a rendition of "Baba O'Riley".
Actor Jack Black pays tribute in a speech.

Hey Mike would you happen to know the guitar Townshend's playing here?

EL, It's hard with Townshend moving around as much as he does to get a good look at the headstock on the guitar to be 100% positive.

But I'm convinced it is a Gibson Les Paul Standard. I put just a little back in "reserve" simply because the LP is probably THE MOST COPIED body style.

The Headstock shape is the only sure way at a glance to tell. Each Guitar Manufacturer has a patten on the shape of the head. Gibson's is a mustache type thing. Martin's is a straight across shape. Look around on Musiciansfriend.com at the different brands and their headstocks. You'll see what I'm talking about.

Even Gretsch makes one that has a Bigsby tailpiece but otherwise looks almost identical to a Gibson LP

Pete was fond of the Les Paul as was Jimmy Page.

Now seems like a good time to remember Mr. Les Paul, who
recently passed away. He changed rock music as we know it,
giving us the solid body electric guitar. He rightfully deserves
his place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Les Paul, you will be missed.

It is amazing isn't it, what it takes to make a sound....and the bass is the instrument seldom thought of. But that sound that sometimes you can barely hear, HAS to be there lest there is no bottom to the music. It would be like comparing a transistor radio's sound to that coming out of a $20,000 stereo rig bolstered by a 20" sub-woofer!

Entwistle may have been the best of the breed at what he did.

Your comment about "bleeding fingers" reminded me of some information documented in "Caught In The Crossfire", a biography about Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Vaughn stayed up all night playing Blues in bars when he was a kid and more or less blew off school. His gigs might be 4 or 5 hours long and he would sometimes play more than one bar in a night in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Crawford & Patroski (co-authors) said that at one gig, SRV told someone to go get him some super glue. The callus pads on the ends of his fingers had been cut off by the strings and he super glued the pads back on and finished the night.

I've never had my fingers "bleed" but I've played until they hurt so bad that I could barely make a chord...yet had to because I was rhythm in a group that was playing a set. For me, acoustic guitars are the worst on your fingers. I use heavy gauge strings to get the best mellow tone out of my Seagull and while they do produce that tone I'm after, they do wear on your fingers!

SRV told someone to go get him some super glue. The callus pads on the ends of his fingers had been cut off by the strings and he super glued the pads back on and finished the night.

Many folks don't know that Cyanoacrylate (super glue) was originally designed as a way of treating battle field wounds. The idea was if a guy got a slash wound, cut, stabbed etc.. you could pour Cyanoacrylate into the divot and it would close the wound temporarily for transport.

It is totally common to use super glue (now there are over the counter versions for this purpose) for small cuts etc... Lots of guys use nail polish or Cyanoacrylate on their nails to make them 'stiffer' for picking.. and a lot of guys keep super glue to put on sensitive finger tips when they are between callouses....

Poor Pete used to rip nails off doing the windmill... even thinking about that makes me cringe.

There is a type of veterinary surgical glue made of cyanoacrylate that is used to glue (smaller) surgical incisions, declaw sites, etc--so it's not surprising that it's been used similarly in people. (Well, not the declaw aspect...)

I thought I was going to be the odd-ball-out on how I perceived The Who doing the Superbowl thing! It is hard for me to find much of anything about the performance that I cared for. Very lack luster. I thought Starkey might inject some energy with his drumming, but even it sounded "mechanical" and not "inspired". I really missed Entwhistle.

I can easily and with a clear conscience state that I can in no way compare them with The Eagles in their ability to perform. They were GREAT in their DAY though.

I'm listening to "Teenage Wasteland" as the theme for CSI NY in the other room. Sure sounded better than the Arena Superbowl. But even allowing for the less than perfect venue for a performance, well......

The Eagles are not the only ones who are Seniors and still rocking at the top of their games. Three Dog Night is still doing top quality stuff. So is Santana. So is Eric Clapton. Unfortunately, The Who Isn't and they were one of my favorite groups.

You are absolutely Correct EL. The winners of the Superbowl are crowned "World Champions" though I don't know of any non-American teams competing for the title. But then, I'm not really a football fan.

I have no objections at all to non-American performers at Superbowl Halftime. Certainly there are a lot of non-American athletes in the NFL/AFL (is there still an AFL?)

But I'd still like to see the Eagles do the halftime even though they are vintage American <smile>.

I agree, Brooke, that they did sound somewhat stronger at the end. I thought 'Won't Get Fooled Again' sounded better than the others. 'Baba O'Riley' especially sounded BAD to my ears.

I wonder if it could have been partially due to the sound at the venue. If my memory serves me correctly, this was one of the concerns the Eagles expressed several years ago when they were contemplating an appearance.

Well folks, on the potential of the venue itself being a part of the problem, I sort of discounted that. True, they would have better control of the final audio in a more suitable environment...even in a stadium if the stadium was set up specifically for a Rock Concert. But it wasn't.

Still, what I was disappointed was not the "final sound" but rather the vocal qualities, especially from Dautrey. They just were not in the groove vocally and that was not because of "the mix". It wasn't that they were flat or sharp with the vocals...it was the vocal quality when compared to how they sounded many Moons ago. I think that may be why many of the older groups sometimes hesitate to perform their songs from 30 or 40 years ago (Eagles exempt!) They just can't do it any more the way they did it in their youths.

Now, maybe the problem was that the "weather" impacted their vocal chords. Or maybe Dautrey was just having an off night. I HOPE SO.

I don't care if non-American bands play either but the Superbowl is a uniquely American event and is seen as such all over the world. Bruce Springsteen and Aerosmith are two American bands who have rocked the Superbowl in recent years.

I'm afraid that when non-Americans see the Superbowl winners described as 'world' champions we shake our heads, just as when you have your baseball 'world' series.

However I am with EL on this one. There should be a mixture of acts, especially if it is trying to increase its appeal worldwide.

I question the World Series of Baseball because Japan has some darn good teams! But in reality, both of those Sports are pretty much "American".

Kinda like me claiming to be the "World Champion" of aluminum can sculpture. The fact that no one else does it makes no difference....I'm the best in the World at it right now so I'm the Freakin' World Champion! <LOL>

Tom Wright is a photographer who got to know Pete Townsend at Art School and acted as The Who's road manager for their first US tour. A few years ago he published a book about his experiences. It's really, really good and if you're a Who fan, you should get it (there's also stories about his experiences with other bands including Joe Walsh, Eagles and JD Souther).

We saw The Who in Dallas about this time last year

Blew the roof off American Airlines Center.

Awesome show, those guys can still rock.

I love the who... I was just listening to them. they are a class act indeed and I really need to catch a live show one day

I like them, but not as much as I did when I was 17-18 years old. Good hard rocking sounds, but Pete Townshend often gets quite preachy for my tastes(Maharishi, the little boy who heard music, etc). They did put out quite a few good tunes. Having said that, I wish they'd just hang it up already(same goes for the Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Foreigner, Boston, etc). Daltrey & Townshend aren't the only two who made the who what they were(may Moon & Entwistle RIP).
