I just got a notification from the Fitz'a (a casino on Fremont St in Las Vegas). I'm not sure whether it's the "city" or the "casinos" that fund it but each New Year's Eve, something special goes on on Fremont St.

This year, it is tribute bands. Check the lineups:

Bands scheduled to perform:
The Long Run – Tribute to the Eagles
Michael John’s Tribute to Billy Joel
Space Oddity Michael Brighton’s Tribute to David Bowie
Original Kiss Army – Tribute to KISS
2U – Tribute to U2
Satisfaction – Tribute to Rolling Stones
Queen Nation – Tribute to Queen
Aeromyth – Tribute to Aerosmith

We won't be in Vegas for New Years Eve celebrations this year. But from other "tributes" I've seen on those same stages, some of them are really good!

Mike - I agree that some of these tribute bands are very enjoyable. I've never seen The Long Run, but I did get to see the Hotel California tribute band a few years ago. I thought they were very good, and actually are a good cure for PEW when you don't get a chance to see the real deal. I wrote a short review if anyone wants to take a look:

I have a vaguely funny anecdote. My husband's hero is (or was) Frank Zappa and we saw his son Dweezil last year (in Zappa Plays Zappa - now THAT'S a tribute band). In the newspaper yesterday there was an article about a Zappa tribute band (the name wasn't given) playing a gig in a Sydney suburb and you could get in for free if you quoted the line 'the forty dollar bill didn't matter no more'. This line is from the song Dinah-Moe Humm, which is my favourite Zappa song. The point is that 15 years ago before I was married I would not have had even the vaguest clue what it was. It shows you that your partner's tastes can influence your own (although I have to say, he has influenced me far more than I have him).

I'm glad that you posted that review Dreamer. Hotel California is doing a show in my hometown in January & I couldn't decide whether to go or not. Your review gives me an idea of what to expect & will help me make my decision whether I go.

You're welcome, EL. If you get a chance to see them, I would definitely recommend it. It was a good show, and most of all two hours of Eagles music at a cheap price!

Last night I went to an Eagles Tribute band concert here in Toronto . 'New Kid in Town" is a fantastic band who really manages to capture the essense of the Eagles. They also did 3 Henley solo songs. Their version of Hotel California was absolutely breathtaking!

Here is their myspace http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=359229929

During the breaks between sets I got to speak to the band. They were very apppreciative of my being there.. and when I told them how much i loved there versions of the eagles songs they said "coming from a true eagles fan like yourself that means more than you can ever know" It was a great evening all around and if and when they play in the toronto area again Dad and I will be in attendance!

This past July I saw an Eagles tribute band about 30 minutes from where i live but for the life of me I can't remember their name. I think it was Desperados but i could be wrong. It was really interesting to see Eagles songs performed by someone else but it still doesn't compare to seeing the REAL thing. These guys were good but i do remember a bit of a fumble on a few of the songs. They had a guy that tried to be Joe Walsh-like but it didn't really work for me. They even did some the same jokes that the Eagles do in concert. They played How Long which was really neat to see/hear but they did say that they didn't like the new album much. I wanted to talk to the band after and even stood around for a few minutes but they were too busy talking to the big wigs of the casino where they were playing. All in all i'd give these guys a 7 out of 10.

Not very nice of a tribute band to knock any album of the band they're tributing!

When I'm watching/listening to a tribute band, I'd rather that they do honors to the band whose work they are covering too Prettymaid. Too disrespect the work of their model artists is not something that normally is in good tastes. Not unless they are trying to discredit the band anyway.

When they carry it to trying to mimic the artists' personalities, well, that's a bit beyond my comfort zone. This is in response to the statement that one of them tried to put on an act mimicing Joe Walsh.

Verna and I attended a "Tribute" to the Beatles at what is now Planet Hollowood out on the Strip in Vegas...at the time, it was the Aladdin. There were four American guys on stage dressed in the Sgt Peppers type "un-uniform" uniforms coming on as the Beatles. They were very a very good Tribute vocally, but their acting left something to be desired. However, I can "forgive them" that shortcoming for they were very sincere in their love of the Beatles and made nothing but flattering references to them as a group or as individuals.

That's one of the things that i wanted to ask them about but didn't get the chance to. I wanted to ask them what it is about the new album that they don't like. Very strange that they didn't like it.

Very strange and very rude to say it to their audience. After all, Eagles music is their bread and butter!

Here's the tribute band thread. Had trouble finding it till PM gave me the link. The Spread Eagles have changed their name to Tequila Sunrise and I forget the last word. Anyway, I'm gonna have someone in the know move my 2 or 3 posts concerning tribute bands in here. I'm still fumbling my way around these forums, you guys have to overlook my goofs:brickwall:.

Ok, now where's the thread about the concert dvd's that we can talk about?:soda:

There isn't a specific thread. You can start one yourself or just continue posting in the Memorabilia thread, if you like.

I just mentioned in another thread that an Eagles tribute band is currently in South Africa.

I might consider going to see them if I get wind that they're in Cape Town, but then again, I might not. I've seen the real deal, and anything less than that might just depress me.

I went to see a Beatles tribute band last year, who were brilliant, and I got to meet them after the show too and had my photo taken with them. This is different, though, as I'll never get to see The Beatles live. All I have of them is my precious DVDs, videos and CDs. John Lennon was murdered when I was four years old, before I was even aware of The Beatles' existence. And I was crushed when George Harrison passed away in 2001, finally putting the nail in The Beatles' coffin. I had always dreamed of at least seeing the surviving Beatles in concert - not necessarily together but as solo artists - but that was not to be.

I also cannot foresee Paul McCartney ever visiting South Africa either. I got a notification that he was performing at the O2 Arena in London on 22 December last year, but I just sighed a heavy sigh, wishing I could go.

I'll also happily support Elvis Presley tribute artists if they're up to the task. I have a good friend who is a super tribute artist, and I hope to perform with him at an upcoming Elvis Festival in Tsitsikamma (near Knysna in the Eastern Cape here in South Africa) at the end of April.

MF, I'm going to the tribute show with the expectations that they will sing the songs well and harmonize well and overall put on an entertaining show. Since I've already listened to several of their renditions, it's not going to be disappointing cuz these guys can sing nicely and it's just gonna be fun. The closest I've ever been to an actual Eagle was a chance encounter with Bernie some years back in a small outlet mall in Franklin, TN.

Nothing special to it. Me and a friend were doing the yard sales in Franklin, which is upper-class suburb right outside of Nashville, and stopped in a little store to snoop around and Bernie was in there, snooping around too. I recognized him immediately but it's not my thing to walk up and say hi or anything like that, it's just gratifying enough for me to see them live and in person, lol. I was looking at a CD and he came over and asked me about it, to which I said the songs were my kind of music, country rock, and he agreed and talked a few minutes and I told him that his opinion counted big time with me. Then he grinned and said why? To which I said that I recognized him immediately and was honored to meet him. Then we talked about California and the years we both had lived there(during the oh-so-important time period), then we shook hands and went on our way. Just a small but memorable pit-stop in my road of life's pleasant moments.

Ok, back to the tribute band, 7 Bridges Road. I ordered 2 t-shirts over a week ago(like the design and might as well get in the right mood for the show)and Jason Manning aka Glenn Frey has emailed me twice, once to make sure the size and color info were correct and today to update me on the shipping. He was concerned about a delay but said they would be shipped priority Sat, to which I replied, there was no need for priority as I'm never in a hurry for stuff. He's about the only one who has his home in Texas, comes up here for the shows and all, the others live here. And he sure does sound like Glenn, so I figure at the show I can sit there with my eyes closed and not notice the difference, lol.

Especially since Bryan Wolski does Timmy and Randy and looks about as much like them as I do<G>. However, the drummer(Henley)resembles Don even to the haircut and Ray Neighbors(Joe)also looks somewhat like Joe and they're all in their 30's. The extra guy plays Joe Vitale. Interesting mix.....

This is the night, got the 7 Bridges t-shirts and we're going to leave in a few hours. It's about a 45 min drive from here, Kim's taking the pix, the guys in the band are familiar with my last name(it's a little unusual), lol, and said they'll come looking for us after the show. Ain't no big deal as most of the tribute bands mingle with the crowd after the show and all. It's over at 10 CST so I'll give my impressions of the 7 Bridges "Eagles":band:
when we get back. Gonna be fun for sure!

What a show! It was rocking! First off, none of the guys look remotely like their "other" self except possibly Keith/Henley. But I'm here to tell you all, Bryan Wolski/Timmy-Randy, nailed Take It To The Limit. I was looking straight at him, had a good 2nd row, almost center table, when he sang it and I thought it was Randy I was hearing. Every note, every high note, right on the head! He brought the house down with it. Jason/Glenn had all of his facial expressions, lol, and a lot of his moves down pat. Kevin, who replaced Ray/Joe, also came very close and his guitar playing was great. Doug/Felder only played and sang harmony and also had some wicked guitar licks. Keith/Henley did a good job on Henley's songs and when he came to the line in Life In The Fast Lane where Don says I didn't see a G..D...thing, he changed it to I didn't see a single thing and rolled on smoothly. He drums like Don too, got the facial expressions down<G>. Vernon/Vitale on keyboards and harmony. They did a lot of the '70s songs that the guys have dropped from their set list but all of us remembered so well. The harmonizing on 7 Bridges Road was flawless. All in all, a great show and I'll be going back to see them again as they will have 2 Nashville shows this summer. If any of you get a chance to see an Eagles tribute band, I'd recommend it.

Thanks for reporting back so soon. Glad you enjoyed them. I don't understand though, if none of them looks like the Eagle they are portraying, why bother with the facial expressions at all? Did it help them come across as looking more like 'their' Eagle?

Guess they were getting into it, they so obviously love the music, and for someone who watches the Eagles on a daily basis(me with all the dvds)the individual expressions identified them easily(although Joe is a lot harder to achieve<G>). These guys have done their homework well and it shows.

The thing for me was the unexpected perfection of "Randy's" vocals. He got a standing ovation, well deserved. And "Joe" also did a nearly perfect version of his voice and great guitar work.

I assume this means he closed his eyes all the time? As for 'moves' what did that involve? Giving the audience an occasional rear view?

I would have thought you identified them based on the songs they sang and the instrument they played rather than their facial expressions.

That wasn't meant to be the case. I asked a simple question, which was how did the 'Glenn' impersonator's facial expressions and moves remind you of Glenn? I didn't mean to offend you and I'm sorry if I did.

Onstage in the middle of the show, Jason explained how much he and the rest of the band loved the Eagles' and their music. He had grown up listening to it as his mother is a big fan, so when they decided to form their own tribute band, they studied everything about the individual they were going to imitate...EVERYTHING, so that the fan could listen to their voices and recognize who they were AND watch their movements and expressions for the same reason. Double the fun, so to speak. Works for me.

Tonight, at a local free summertime concert in the park, my family is going to see "Hotel California," a band that bills itself as the #1 Eagles Tribute Band. I think they actually are from California.Their website says they play 150-200 shows per year; in fact, they played at another local town's performing arts center in April (where the tickets obviously had to be purchased ahead of time)...so I guess it pays to drag one's feet once in awhile! I think it should be good...at least fun, right? I'll let you know!

Later this summer, at still another town's free summer concert series, is another famous tribute band in these parts... "The B Street Band!" I've heard the lead singer does an awesome imitation of Bruce Springsteen, so you can bet yours truly will be bringing her brood there as well!

Well, I have to say that Hotel California did a very good job re-creating the songs and sounds of the Eagles, from the beginning to the songs of "The Long Run." They are a 5-piece band, with 2 lead singers that split the leads fairly equally, Wade and Steve. Af first, I though Wade would do all of Glenn's leads and Steve all of Don's, and was waiting to see who of the remaining group would do the others. However, then Steve did a Glenn song, and all bets were off. And then he did a Tim song...and eventually a Joe song. And then Wade came back with a Randy song. And then Scott, with a crystal-clear steady falsetto, would do Glenn's 'rebel yell' or Don's ending 'ooh-ooh's' on BOML and just add a bit, but complete the song. So, although it was a bit disconcerting not to have each singer tied neatly to one Eagle as I expected, it worked out the long run..

Hotel California played for 90 minutes non-stop, which I thought was great for an 80+ degree night. At least a light breeze did kick in during this heat wave. Although they had only a couple of songs that I thought sounded less than spot-on, they had more than a few that they absolutely nailed. They did an awesome job with "Seven Bridges Road," opening with the statement that they have been asked so many times to do this song, that they just figured out they had better learn it. They also nailed "Heartache Tonight," "Tequila Sunrise," and "Desperado."

There was a section roped off in front of the stage for VIPs, which remained mostly emptly. Their was a grandfatherly type who start the night there, but very shortly into the concert, he moved out and into the grassy area just outside the ropes. He began a slow steady be-bopping kind of dance to the songs, that lasted the entire night! He was so INTO the music at age 80, mouthing the lyrics as he swayed. Finally, after a few songs, his wife (I assume), came up to the front with her walker, and proceed to bop and sway with him as she danced with the walker as her support! It was TOO cute. She could only last a song or two, and then she left to go back to her seat, while grandpa kept swaying. Finally, his daugter (?), a 35-40 yr old, joined him during the 2nd half of the show, but then she tired and sat down. And grandpa kept a-dancin'! Then came up a granddaughter, with a couple of her kids to join "the Man," and they saw to it that he had dancing partners to last the rest of the show. What a performance that whole escapade was! Funny!

Willie, I think you should go. I know you'd be expecting an exact replica in time and space of Timmy, but ya gotta let that go. Once I let go of the fact that there wasn't one designated singer in Hotel California per Eagle, I was able to sit back in my camp chair, enjoying the summer air and my ice cream, and take it all in. Just realize that most of the audience there (and most of the audiences they ever play to) are not as "die-hard" as we are, so we have to cut them a bit of slack. That being said, the group I saw did a pretty commendable job...I was suitable impressed!

Just checked out Heartachetonight.com. Hmmm--sure don't look like our boys-wasn't one long haired bass player in the bunch. :hilarious: Listened to some of the songs also and admit I was going down the line going, this isn't fairing well and by the time I got to ICTYW, I was almost afraid to click on it. But actually, in my opinion, it was the best song of them all, which was a pleasant surprise.

Cathy-just talked to Larry and we're there!! In fact taking an extra day so we can take our time coming home and hit some antique shops along the way.

I'm gonna take everyone's advice and just keep in mind it's not my guys, and that everyone there isn't as big a fan as we all are. Maybe Cathy and I can educate a few people!:hilarious: Hey, for $10, it's worth a shot and I might get lucky if I close my eyes a few times, and try real hard, I just might lose myself for a few minutes and think I just spent $200+ for the real thing!

I really enjoyed the cover band that I saw. They were part of a "Classic Albums" series & were doing "Hotel California". The 1st half of the show they performed the songs from the album & during the 2nd half they sang other Eagles hits. One guy in the back kept yelling "Seven Bridges Road" & at the very end they came back out & sang it. They must have just been learning it because they used a song book & held it between them. They did a good job on it. The entire concert was very enjoyable. None of them tried to look like any of our guys & each singer didn't sing only songs by one particular Eagle. I went to the concert with the mindset that I was going to hear Eagles' music, not to see the Eagles & I was really impressed by how much they actually sounded like the guys. I'm sure you will enjoy the show Willie & Cathy!

Hotel California will be playing a festival here in our little town in 2 weeks! Woo hoo!

Two shows one at 4:45 and one at 8 pm. So, am I gonna look like a complete dork if I'm standing right down by the stage for both shows? :headbang:

Only if you do this :headbang: Lol!

Thanks GL, I'm sure I will too. And we've forgotten to mention that it's a benefit concert for breast cancer, so that $10 will be going to a good cause!

Ann, I did exactly the same thing when I saw 'Hotel California' a few years ago. For the price I paid, it was totally worth it. I enjoyed them a lot. It's true that they weren't Glenn, Don, Timothy, and Joe, but then, I wasn't expecting them to be.

We saw the Chicago based Eagles tribute band Heartache Tonight on Saturday. They played at the Chevrolet Hall of Fame Car Museum in Decatur, IL. While they are called a tribute band, I would classify them more as a cover band. Being a Beatles fan, I have seen 3 or 4 of their tribute bands, plus I have seen a tribute to Elton John. In all of these cases the performers look like, dress like, sound like and act like the people they are tributing. I knew this was not going to happen Saturday because I had gone to the band’s site and knew what they were about.

It was really hot Saturday and the emcee for the band apologized for the band wearing shorts. He said that they enjoyed playing Eagles music because they could play for a long time and play hit after hit. He talked after almost every song, joking or simply introducing the next song. As some of you have mentioned about the cover bands that you’ve seen, there wasn’t someone who did all Don’s stuff and someone else who did Glenn’s. Basically the ‘front’ guitarist and the drummer shared the lead vocal responsibilities, with the exception of the keyboard player, who did three Joe songs. They did not do a single Timothy song.

All that being said, I enjoyed this band and I’m glad I went. They played for 3 ½ hours! The song they did that sounded most like the Eagles was 7 Bridges Road. The song I thought the drummer did a great interpretation of was Heart of the Matter. So no, they did not ‘sound just like’ the Eagles, but they did a good job playing Eagles songs.

Here’s the link to their site: http://heartachetonight.com/ (http://heartachetonight.com/)

Hubby kept track of the set list for me.

Heartache Tonight
How Long
Peace Easy Feeling
Already Gone
The Long Run
New Kid In Town
Get Over It
Walk Away
Best Of My Love
Life In The Fast Lane
James Dean
Good Day In Hell
Take It Easy

Intermission

Hotel California
Lyin’ Eyes
7 Bridges Road
All She Wants To Do Is Dance
Heart of the Matter
One Of These Nights
Victim Of Love
Tequila Sunrise
Funk 49
Ol’ 55
Witchy Woman
Dirty Laundry
Take It To The Limit
Rocky Mountain Way

Encore – Desperado

I felt bad for them because the crowd was so small, less than 100. But even after Desperado people were clapping to hear more, so they did Love The One You’re With by CSN and an Eric Clapton blues song that I don’t remember the name of.

If you want to see pictures I’ve made an album on my profile page.

Thanks for that review, PM. Really glad you all enjoyed the show. What a great set list! The only thing I was disappointed in was that they didn't do I Can't Tell You Why and Life's Been Good. But where else are ya gonna hear James Dean, Good Day in Hell, Ol' 55, and Victim of Love played these days! I'm amazed at how long they played and how small the crowd was. When I saw the Hotel California tribute band a few years ago, they played about 2 1/2 hours if I remember correctly. But, still, I think I went there thinking they would play 45 minutes or an hour, so I was very pleasantly surprised. Also, I think there must have been around 500 people or so in the audience that night - but, I remember it being a perfectly gorgeous night so I'm sure that helped.

And OBTW, thank hubby for keeping track of that set list for us Borderers! :headbang:

Thanks Cathy for the great review!

Sounds like you had a great time, Cathy. I think the key is knowing beforehand that they weren't going to look like the guys.

Sorry you didn't make it though, Willie.

And New Kid In Town and Get Over It, both of which would be in the real band's setlist if I had my way. I know you're referring to songs which haven't been played for a LONG time (although James Dean was played in 2003, rather more recently than GOI)....

Yeah, she bailed on me! :hilarious: But for a good reason. Check out the What's Happening in Your Life thread and Willie explains how Larry got very sick on the way to the show. Thank goodness he's okay now. But I wish they could have been there.

Just got back from seeing a tribute band -"Hotel California". These guys were out of S. California and were different from the band with the same name I saw a couple of years ago.

I managed to wiggle my way right down by the stage (without dreamer having me in a wrestling hold to do it).

And no, Kay - no Peter Schwetty's and no getting spit on -but it was a blast nonetheless!

While they had great voices and lovely harmonies -they didn't particularly have the Eagles "sound" down. Great musicianship, though. They did a fantastic job with "Seven Bridges Road". (Now if I could only see the "real" thing!)

Having had a few "brewskies" with friends beforehand, I had fun dancing and singing right down by the stage, and they seemed to notice that I knew every word. Heck, I knew every woo hoo.

After the show, I went over to the band to say hello and got a big "hug" from one of the "lead" singers. He said he didn't think he'd ever seen anyone at the show who knew every word to "Smuggler's Blues" before.

Kay, be very glad that Ditka didn't have your cell phone number in his phone. I believe he filled up Z's mailbox again. I hope she slaps him silly next time she sees him!

Glad you got to see this, Molly. That guy must have a short memory cause when I went to see them a few years ago, they told me exactly the same thing. After the show, they remarked how I sang every work to every song. Hey - I told them I was a hardcore.

So Molly, I'm proud that you made your way to the foot of the stage without me! But, I'm also kinda glad you didn't get spit on - I mean those guys ain't no Glenn Frey, after all. :nope: So was Ditka standing at the stage with you or did you leave him sitting? And whatever you do, make sure he doesn't find my cell phone number. Z would be very jealous and upset if he wasted time calling me when he could be calling her.

For those of you who have been holding your breath (only a precious few, I hope)--my report on the B Street Band , the longest-running tribute band to Springsteen (and actually to anyone, so they say). Well they are a dead-ringer for the songs and sounds of Bruce and the E Streeters! It was amazing! It doesn't hurt that the lead singer has a decent resemblance to Bruce, and definitely has all of his stage presence, banter, mannerisms, and speaking voice down pat. It's pretty funny when he breaks character and says something between songs in his regular voice, though. If you can't get tix to the real deal, or just want some Bruce Juice in between tours, I would highly recommend seeing these guys. You won't be disappointed!

I admire tribute bands. They are dedicated musicians who love the music and the artist(s) they are covering, put on a very entertaining show and are, of course, affordable with usually a crowd of 200-400 and are good about mixing with the crowd after the show.

WC, you're gonna have a great time, wish I was there to go with you. We'll need details of the show please. Enjoy yourself.......

I just got back. They were amazing. If you like Journey I definitely recommend you check these guys out if they play near you. They played for two hours and sang all the hits. They sound very similar to the real thing. After the show they came out and mixed with the crowd.

I saw the tribute band "Hotel California" saturday night at Ball State University in Muncie,Indiana. They were better than I expected them to be. They sang 19 songs. One song I did not expect to hear was "Those Shoes". My neighbor went with me and we both enjoyed the show for what it was; however most people in the crowd was very quiet. We wanted to get up and dance and finally did near the end. All in all for
$8.50 it was a bargain. In two weeks I will see THE REAL EAGLES in Louisville. My sister is going with me to her 1st Eagles show. If I get a ticket for Indianapolis, this will be my third. In Louisville we will be 4th row on Glenn and Timothy's side.

Good for you Cheryl. I've seen the Hotel California band too, and I also enjoyed them.

I'm also contemplating going to the Louisville show, but haven't made up my mind yet. I'm going to start checking to see if I can get great seats at or around face value. It's a long drive for me, but if I can get the right seats, it'll be worth it.
