View Full Version : What's your Eagles "Dream Setlist"?

A few topics that have popped up lately (what song would you like to hear and what concert tour would you like to have seen, etc...) got me thinking long and hard on what I would love to see and hear live from them. So thought I would start this topic (sorry if it may have been done before, but I don't believe it has since I've been on anyways).

Here's how it works. What Eagles songs or Solo songs would you use to make your Dream Setlist? It can be any combination of solo and group work. But we need to set up some guidelines or I think we would have setlist that would end up being 7 hour concerts , which I don't think any of us would mind but the guys would think otherwise I'm sure.

Guidelines

1) Setlist will consist of no more than 26 songs (not including encores). Don't have to be in any particular order. Can include any combination of group and solo work but no more than 4 solo songs from any 1 Eagle (no more than 4 Glenn Frey songs, no more than 4 Don Henley songs, etc.).This is how many songs that are in the current setlist.

2) Include 1 alternate encore of 2 songs. We all know that if they play Rocky Mountain Way and ASWTDID when they come back out on stage that we are getting 2 encores but that it is rare.

3) Include 1 encore of 2 songs that we will hear for every show. The current one is always Take It Easy and Desperado.

This is really hard!! I will start us off.

Setlist
1.) Love Will Keep Us Alive
2.) I Can't Tell You Why
3.)Best Of My Love

FP--I wasn't sure if anyone else would put King Of Hollywood on their list or not. I have always just loved that song---that sultry wicked voice... YUM!

I didn't know what to do with all the new stuff from LROOE. You should see my list I had been playing with for a few days in preparation for this topic. I wrote and scratched off and wrote again. I LOVE LROOE but there is so much old stuff that I love also and so many old songs that they no longer have in their playlist that I would love to see (such as Best Of My Love).

LR- Every Song Is You is from Feed The Fire. I also love the fact that you added the Greeks Don't Want No Freaks! How cool is that!?! I must admit-I get a kick out of that song!!

Lou--I hadn't even thought about New York Minute! Grrrr! I'm sorry, but I really think they need to play 6-7 hour shows!

What does 'special Desperado' mean, Soda? The Reprise? I've always considered that Doolin-Dalton/Desperado Reprise is sung by Don.

Interesting setlist but a bit heavy on ballads for my taste.

sodascouts
01-14-2009, 07:47 PM
Yeah, it's the Reprise. "Special Desperado" is my private name for it and I forgot to change it to the official one before posting this. Same for the color coding. I wrote out "Special Desperado" at the same time as I wrote out Doolin-Dalton and forgot to change the color of the second one. :)

I don't know, I like HC, but it's just not one of the songs that I always really look forward to hearing (in comparison to other songs) or play very often. On a related (and possibly also directly related) note- even though neither of my parents were big Eagles fans, I remember my father always raving about this song when it would come on the radio and explaining his interpretation of it to me when I was very young. (It's funny, but I've never reflected on my 'casual attitude' about this song in this way....)

Well, from this thread, it seems the top five most-wished-for songs that aren't in the current setlist are:

New Kid in Town
Already Gone
Tequila Sunrise
Get Over It
What Do I Do with My Heart

I think we'd need some kind of key change to make the first work because Glenn has said it's hard for him to consistently hit the high notes on NKIT. The rest, though, seem like they'd work just fine! Of course, then comes the question of what they would replace...

I agree with the above songs but I'd like to substitute WDIDWMH for Victim of Love. I really like that one and think it's an underrated song.

But I absolutely want Already Gone. I love that song.

Well Slider - You have an interesting dream set list, that's for sure. There are several threads/discussions on the board from the past when this has come up and it's always interesting to see what folks come up with when we do these. My guess is that in real life, even with a three-hour set list, you'd get a little better than 50% of your list. But, oh well, that's why we call it a dream list, isn't it.

That's a really good question, Freypower...I think either Timothy or maybe Glenn on "Try & Love Again". We can try each one & then decide:?

If I had to eliminate something, it would be "Fast Company", now that I think about it maybe I would put in "Guilty of the Crime" instead.

TK, I think I'd enjoy your concert very much. :)

I'm another one who loves LROOE, and I've just realised that I haven't posted my dream setlist. I'll start working on it!

I will add though, that it's going to be my Dream Setlist for Attending a Concert, however I'm also hoping that they will revise the setlist for the 40th anniversary and film it for another DVD, and so I want songs for the new DVD that aren't on HFO or F1... but my Dream Setlist will be just for the concert, just for ME...

In all seriousness though:

How Long
Saturday Night
Peaceful Easy Feeling
New Kid in Town
Hollywood Waltz
Doolin/Dalton Instrumental-Outlaw Man
Out of Control
Witchy Woman
Pretty Maids All in a Row
Lyin' Eyes

Encore:
Rocky Mountain Way

Encore 2:
Desperado
Silver Dagger-Take It Easy

See, nothing from The Long Run :) Tried to group the soft/country and hard/rock elements together into broadly halves. Note not ending with Desperado - I love it but for me it kills a bit of the upbeat spirit of Take It Easy leaves. As a special request, I'd like them to do it with just the current four plus Steuart Smith - no extra percussionists whilst Henley plays guitar to a song he drummed in the 70s!

I’m surprised they’re not playing anything from Long Road as I would definitely love to hear some of those tracks. Then I would skip Funk #49. That’s my cue to get in the queue for the Ladies (sorry Joe fans).

My wishlist, in no particular order, assuming it’s ok to have one Poco song.

Seven Bridges Road
My Man
Waiting in the Weeds
No More Walks in the Wood
New York Minute
Pretty Maids All in a Row
You Belong to the City
Ol 55
One of These Nights

I went back and reread this thread, and it is very interesting to read everyone's dream set lists. I didn't post a list here because my dream set list would include just about every song in their catalog, and it would be an excruciating task for me to try to narrow it down. I will say I would have to include at least one song from every album though. Also, for me personally, I can't imagine an Eagles concert without Take It Easy or Hotel California. These are the band's most definitive songs, and I think I would kind of feel cheated if they were excluded.

SS, I would support deleting LWKUA for Keep On Tryin'.

It’s tough because I would love to hear another TBS vocal and also Train Leaves and Saturday Night but gave them up for My Man and Bitter Creek. I did even think of just choosing the longest songs so that they would be on stage longer …

I’m sort of with whoever it was that didn’t like The Long Run that much – the album I mean. But I love Heartache Tonight and I Can't Tell You Why (although I never used to). I think the title track is a weird choice (and they always seem to play it).

I don't have much time now to put together a full setlist but now that Bernie's back I feel like Earlybird would be a perfect thing to end the whole show with. It's just... right.

Ive always been a dreamer
08-21-2013, 01:52 PM
Well - I certainly appreciate your opinion, OOTB, but, TBH, I can't say I agree with Earlybird as a show closer. I can't really envision Bernie closing the show since he is listed as a 'guest' on this tour. Also, the show closer is usually one of the band's more well-known songs. And all that aside, even though this is very subjective, it is one of my least favorite Eagles/Bernie songs, so it definitely wouldn't get my vote for that reason alone. JMHO

Prettymaid

OOTB, I do agree with Dreamer about Earlybird being the closer, but I will stick up for it in that before the tour started my dream set list for the current tour included Bernie doing it instead of Train Leaves Here.

Well, from this thread, it seems the top five most-wished-for songs that aren't in the current setlist are:

New Kid in Town
Already Gone
Tequila Sunrise
Get Over It
What Do I Do with My Heart

Here we are, 5 years later, and we got three out of five. Not bad!

They just need to bring back that How Long / SBR encore...

It was rough but I choose:

After The Thrill Is Gone
Best Of My Love
Certain Kind of Fool
Desperado
Doolin-Dalton
Hotel CaliforniaI
Can't Tell You Why
I Wish You Peace
Lyin' Eyes
New Kid in Town
Ol' 55
Peaceful Easy Feeling
Seven Bridges Road
Take It Easy
Take It to The Limit
Take The Devil
Tequila Sunrise
Try & Love Again
Tryin'
Wasted Time

*And if it is a Christmas show, I would love my all-time favorite Christmas song "Please Come Home For Christmas."

P.S. Is 20 songs too many? lol

Who would sing Certain Kind Of Fool,Take The Devil, Try & Love Again & Tryin'? I am assuming that you think Bernie would be there & would therefore sing I Wish You Peace.

Also is this your running order? Is Wasted Time really a good choice for an encore let alone the final song? And with respect, both TTD & TALA would hardly be songs people would be expecting to hear at the end of the show.

Freypower

I stand corrected, but most people who have contributed to this thread attempted to construct a possible playing order.

As for the 'dream lineup' again this is the first time it has come up.

Freypower

No Particular order:

One of these Nights
Out on the Border
My Man
Bitter Creek
You never cry like a lover
Hotel California
Life in the fast lane
Desperado
Wasted Time
Pretty Maids all in a Row
Saturday Night
Best of my love
Witchy Women
The Last Resort
Train Leaves here this morning.

I will probably regret this, but unfortunately I think it has to be mentioned.

You don't have one lead vocal by Glenn Frey in this setlist. Not one. For that matter you don't have any by Timothy B. Schmit, but....

Also, not that it matters but 'dream setlists' were being posted in this thread:

https://eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1331

And by the way yes, I do realise this is your dream setlist & you are entitled to include whatever songs you wish. But not even Take It Easy; I am sorry, but I think this is a harsh call.

I don't know why you have a problem with my setlist. These are songs that I would like to hear. I would love to hear Bernie sing more than one song. I have always been a fan of Henley's voice, so I really like his songs. More songs could be added but these are the ones I really want to hear. It is my list, I can put down what I want.

You can indeed choose what you want.

I commented on the glaring omission of any Glenn Frey songs in your list. That is the last I will say about it.

Seems to me you'd be better of at a Don Henley solo show! except Bernie wouldn't be there, of course.

At an Eagles show, I want to hear each of them sing lead vocals. I would be very disappointed if they sang your set list; but as you say it's your dream.

I've moved BRD's post and its replies to the "Dream Setlist" thread. It pertains more closely to that since there's "no particular order" to BRD's list, and thelastresort's question was about one's thoughts on the structure of the current setlist. Plus, eliminating all of Tim and Glenn's songs falls under the category of "pipe dream" which we reserve for the fantasy threads like this one.

If anyone needs more clarification about what the phrase "setlist structure" means or is simply interested in reading more about it, there's some webpages on composing setlist structure here (http://www.roland.co.uk/musicindustrynews/How-do-I-structure-a-setlist?$800007667.aspx) and here (http://www.joelmabus.com/composing_a_set_list.htm).

If anyone needs more clarification about the difference between a "dream setlist" and an "actual setlist," then feel free to ask!

I know all these related threads can be confusing. I do my best to try to keep 'em in order. Hope this helps!

It's a discussion board, so aren't any Dream Setlists up for discussion? I'll just add that BRD's list didn't include anything sung by Joe, either so it's an unusual choice.

When I saw the band, I was surprised at how different it was to listening to the records. I've never thought much of Those Shoes but in concert, it was a hightlight whereas some of the quieter songs that I usually love, dragged a little. It makes me realise that I couldn't put together a Dream Setlist on my own.

What I'd really like it to go back in time and hear the band play back in the 1970s when they played as a 4, 5 or even 6-piece. Probably the On the Border tour, though I'm tempted by The Long Run tour, too.

On the Border tour, a pretty up-tempo list but maybe not enough of Bernie's singing:

I'll give this another go because it is a scientifically proven fact that you can never have too many fantasy Eagles setlists:

Saturday Night
How Long
Peaceful Easy Feeling
Good Day in Hell
I Can't Tell You Why
Boys of Summer
You Belong to the City
Walk Away
One of These Nights
Doolin-Dalton
Doolin-Dalton / Desperado Reprise
Already Gone

-Break-
Tequila Sunrise
Desperado
Take It to the Limit
James Dean
Ol' 55
Outlaw Man
Heartache Tonight
Pretty Maids All in a Row
New Kid in Town
Lyin' Eyes
Nightingale
Best of My Love
Life in the Fast Lane
The Last Resort

-Encore-
Hotel California

-Encore 2-
After the Thrill is Gone
Life's Been Good
Take It Easy

(On some shows I would add Journey of the Sorcerer vice OOTN and LROOE vice Nightingale.)

I would love to hear "On the Border." I wonder why they've never (if I understand correctly) played it live - guess it just didn't come together.
