Has anyone besides FP and DF seen Elton? He was here last April, but didn't get a chance to go. Maybe he'll come here for my birthday

I wish I could remember how many times I have seen this man. The first time was in 1982, the Too Low For Zero tour. I also saw the Jump Up tour, the big tour with the orchestra, the Face to Face tour with Billy Joel, the Captain & the Kid tour, and again last year. That is six times at least. I have been a devoted fan since 1972 in England when I saw him do Crocodile Rock on Top Of The Pops, although he went through a very uncreative period when he was overwhelmed by drugs.

Anyone who wants to discover Sir Elton's musical genius should purchase the following albums:

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player
Honky Chateau
Too Low For Zero
Songs From The West Coast
Elton John

and a personal top 10, though it could easily be 20:

1. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
2. Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding
3. Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting
4. Your Song
5. The Bitch Is Back
6. Daniel
7. Honky Cat
8. I'm Still Standing
9. Song For Guy
10. Bennie & The Jets

Four of those are from GYBR, which remains in my Top 10 albums of all time.

EL, I have seen Elton about 15 times over the past 15 years or so, and each concert was more special than the one before. He is a fantastic singer, piano player and songwriter-a very very talented man. I heard recently that he and Billy Joel are going to tour again. I did see them together once, and really enjoyed it, so I hope to see them again on this tour.
I hope you have a chance to see Elton in concert one day-you will have a ball!:partytime:

Wow, that's a lot of times! That beats my Springsteen concert count I'm sure (although I've actually lost count at this point, I don't think it can be 15.) I saw Elton and Billy a few years ago in Madison Square Garden, and loved it as well. I'm more of a BJ fan, and had seen him several times before solo--once on a grand New Year's Eve show on Long Island.

I'm a long time Elton fan! I saw him this fall in concert, just him & his piano for almost 3 hours. He didn't take a break. You appreciate his talent even more when you see him perform without any band or backup singers. Quite a thrill!

I have never seen him but sure would love to. I understand that Nigel Olsen is still with him on this tour and I always loved him from as far back as the 70's when he was playing with Elton.

NOW, I will ask the question...because I don't feel like googling--who's Nigel Olsen, other than a Brit? (All Nigels I've ever heard of are, aren't they?)

Nigel Olsson is the drummer. Davey Johnstone is the guitarist. The only original band member missing is the late Dee Murray (bass).

Freypower
06-09-2009, 06:13 PM
In terms of his temperament he is much more like Beethoven - extremely volatile and prone to tantrums (although Mozart may well have been like this too). I love Elton dearly but he can be something of a prima donna on occasion.

EagleLady
06-09-2009, 06:15 PM
I think his temperament really shows through when he is hounded by the press like in Taiwan in 2004.

EagleLady
06-09-2009, 06:33 PM
Also, He had no problem doing Music Videos in the 80s, but in the 90s all of a sudden had a problem with them, I wonder what is with the sudden change of heart?

I saw a program on TV a little while ago, hosted by Elvis Costello, where he interviewed Sir Elton. It was fantastic. (I've always liked Elton John's music, but I can't say I've ventured into full-on fandom.) However, I loved this program. The chat was brilliant. Lots of stories, and I'm pretty sure he mentioned the Troubadour a couple of times, too. Definitely worth watching if you're an Elton fan. My favorite song by Elton John is Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me. Carl Wilson and Bruce Johnston (though technically when Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me was released, Bruce wasn't in the Beach Boys) of the Beach Boys sang background vocals on it.

I think I can guess Elton's thought process (or what he was told since I doubt he is intimately familiar with The Bible):

In John's Gospel, John refers to himself as "the disciple whom Jesus loved." To Elton and others who think the same way he does, that can only mean they had sex.

You know, it's the notion that two men cannot be close without being sexually attracted to each other that causes so many straight men to be afraid to form close friendships with gay men (or even uncomfortable being demonstrative with other straight men). Elton is unintentionally promoting a stereotype that results in homophobic behavior.

Ironic.

ETA: I don't think Elton really cares about whether or not it's accurate. I think he says it in order to cut away at one of the religions he despises.

TimothyBFan
02-23-2010, 07:03 PM
WOW--I can't believe he went there. Religion is just one of those things that everybody can interpret differently but that's just bizarre! I'm really surprised that there wasn't a whole lot of controversy over that statement. I would of thought that sh*t would of hit the fan over that one and that Elton's camp didn't have to do some damage control.

I wasn't sure if I should comment here but he didn't mock anyone. He made a statement of what he seems to think. I thought it was somewhat tongue in cheek. Read the rest of the comment, not just the 'gay man' part. Of course he doesn't know that.

He's an inspiration to those of us who admire his music and the fact that he is a gay man and proud of it.

LOL Willie I liked his music and always liked his voice but never really considered myself a fan I guess. I wasn't going to go because no one else could afford to get a ticket and I didn't want to go by myself. The morning of the concert, one of my friends called me and asked if I would go with her and I said sure. I'll be honest....I went into it with the mindset of "this is another concert to add to my list, Elton's a legend and now I'll be able to say I've seen him."

Brooke I just can't seem to remember as many concert details as Soda can but I'll give my best. lol I don't remember every single song he sang but it was his greatest hits tour so obviously all of the big ones. We got there a bit late (my friends fault. grr. lol) so we missed the first song or two. Which I HATED because part of the excitement of the concert is being there when he first comes out on the stage. Maybe that's just me though. As we were trying to find our seats "Saturday's Alright For Fighting" came on. I just remember being practically giddy suddenly when I heard it. lol He had the sound really cranked up! lol It was one of the loudest concerts I've been to. The place was absolutely packed, possibly the fullest I've ever seen it!

I knew he was good on the piano, but I had no idea that he was absolutely insanely good. It was absolutely amazing! At the end of most of the songs, he drew them out for a few minutes and just played and played. He had a few songs I wasn't familiar with but I remember recognizing the opening notes of Tiny Dancer and thinking "I can't believe I'm looking at Elton John right now!" lol I honestly like his voice more as he's matured and it's become a little lower and more raspy. Rocket Man was AMAZING! I swear it went for like 6 or 7 minutes! lol He sang a couple of newer songs and said something like "I know everyone wants to hear the hits and we'll get back to them but I have a couple of new songs I'd like to play for you now." He said something about if he didn't have some new songs to sing he'd go crazy or something. I couldn't understand because he mumbled it a bit at the end and started laughing. Apparently it must have been funny because the crowd laughed. lol One thing I thought was neat was that after every song, he stood up and thanked the crowd and waved at the people in the poor seats behind the stage. I loved his faster songs because they seemed very gospel influenced, as far as style. I LOVED his backup singers! There were 4 African American ladies and they were amazing! There was one that he introduced as the lady with all the curls that was just dancing up a storm. One of the ladies was an original member of Sly and the Family Stone and I'm assuming another was her daughter or related in some way because her last name was Stone as well.

One of my favorite moments was when he slowed it down and sang "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word." I got goosebumps it was so beautiful! Seemed like the whole crowd was waiting for Candle in the Wind because they erupted when he started it. It was really pretty to hear people singing along. I have to say I've NEVER seen a concert where the artist got a standing ovation after literally every song but he did! It was crazy and very cool to be a part of. I was waiting the whole night for "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" and when he started playin the intro I felt about as giddy as I did when I first heard the Eagles start with "How Long." lol I LOVE that song and the bluesy flavor to it. I was also waiting for Bennie and the Jets and that another high note for me. He wailed away on that piano and was jumping up off of his seat. He really seemed to be enjoying himself. I wasn't super familiar with Crocodile Rock (I know, I know!) but there was a good couple of minutes were just the crowd was singing and it was LOUD.....he stood up and perched one leg on the piano and grinned. I was kinda proud of my crowd. ;)

The lights went out and of course everyone went CRAZY......he came back out on the stage and absolutely impressed me completely. The people in the first 3 or 4 rows were holding up a bunch of stuff for him to sign and he walked up and down until he had signed literally every single thing that people held up to him. I've NEVER seen anyone do that except for Keith Urban and this is ELTON JOHN doing that! I was thoroughly impressed and knew he had won me over. ;) This went on for at least 5 minutes and I think people were starting to give up on him singing another song but everyone was satisfied with standing there watching him sign autographs. lol He then walked over to the piano, sat down, and proceeded to tell us what a great crowd we were and how thankful and grateful he was for our support and sticking with him for so many years. He then, of course, dedicated the final song to us and proceeded to play "Your Song."

Random story time......one of my sister's co-workers also works at our airport and I guess the airline lost Elton's luggage. When it finally arrived, she PERSONALLY delivered it to Elton himself. I guess he gave her two close tickets to the concert and spent some time signing autographs and taking pictures with her and for her husband. I guess I always had this view of Elton that he would be stuck up and rude and who knows...I'm sure he is at times, like many of us are at some point. lol But he won me over and I will remain a fan for a long time!

ETA: The ONLY thing that disappointed me was that he didn't sing "Something About The Way You Look Tonight," which I LOOOOOOOOVE! 'Course when you have what seems like a hundred hits, you can't sing 'em all ;)

So glad that you enjoyed the concert so much, Maleah. I'm an Elton fan from way back. I saw him close to 2 years ago & he was fantastic! Just him & his piano! He signed autographs for everyone near the stage that wanted one. I was surprised by that too. It wasn't the greatest hits tour so he did some of his more obscure songs as well as hits. My husband isn't as big a fan as I am so he didn't know all the songs, but I did. Quite a show! Such a talented man!

Willie I loved Nigel! He was fun to watch because the camera man kept coming around behind the drums to focus on him and he would make faces into the camera and laugh. He seemed like he was really enjoying himself!

I had a couple of Elton songs....."Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" (which was one of my all-time favorite songs by ANYONE) and "Bennie and the Jets." I loved "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" but I never could remember the title of it. lol I love love LOVE Elton's voice on that. Vocally I think that's my favorite Elton era. I have literally listened to that song and the George Michael/Elton John verson of "Don't Let The Sun..." over and over and over again since the concert. I've been watching the latter's video on youtube and I get chills EVERY time Elton comes out and sings his verse.

As for whether I plan to get music or not.....my last itunes bill shows that I went a little crazy with almost $20 worth of purchases after the concert. LOL Any recommendations? I bought his "Rocket Man-Number Ones" cd so I'd have most of the big ones.

ETA: I REALLY hope he comes back to the US for another round of touring after this one is done because I will travel to see him again. He's in Minnesota early May but I want to get close seats this time. lol

One of my favorite Elton albums is Mad Man Across The Water which includes Levon, Tiny Dancer and the title track. It isn't chalked full of hits but it is a very worthy album.

I just looked at the track listing for Rocket Man: Number Ones. Pretty good selection but quite a few missing like Border Song, I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues and one of my faves, Someone Saved My Life Tonight.

I'd be hard pressed to list my favorites because they are continuously changing. I had actually forgot about the duet with George Michael of Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me and just checked and don't have it downloaded in my Itunes. Will need to correct that right away.

In terms of albums you MUST have the following:

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player
Honky Chateau
Captain Fantastic & the Brown Dirt Cowboy
Elton John

From the later era I recommend:

Too Low For Zero
The Captain & the Kid
Jump Up!
Songs From The West Coast
The Union (with Leon Russell)

This is what I said my Top 10 songs were at the start of the thread:

1. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
2. Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding
3. Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting
4. Your Song
5. The Bitch Is Back
6. Daniel
7. Honky Cat
8. I'm Still Standing
9. Song For Guy
10. Bennie & The Jets

I would probably stand by that but I would recommend the following 'deep' tracks:

This Song Has No Title
Blues For My Baby & Me
Mona Lisas & Mad Hatters
Sartorial Eloquence
Passengers
Bitter Fingers
Grimsby
High Flying Bird
I Want Love
Grey Seal

There are so many! I could write about this stuff all day!

Well Sir Elton John certainly gave quite a concert last night...He sang for 2&1/2 hours, no breaks, and he signed autographs for at leat 5 minutes before his encore..
He did all his hits, from his oldest to the newest....great songs like "Levon", "Candle in the wind", "Crocodile ROck", Rocket Man, Daniel, I'm still standing,Bennie and the jets,Nikita, etc.....you get the picture...just him and his piano, no backup singers....he was awesome...He got a standing ovation after every song, and he finished up the night with "Circle of life" and "Can you feel the love tonight"...He was very humble and constantly thanking the crowd for all the love we were showing him....great concert....

Ooo we didn't get Can You Feel The Love Tonight! Jealous :) Did he sing Something About The Way You Looked Tonight? I REALLY wanted him to sing that one at our show, but he didn't. :( Glad to hear it was a great show! Not that I expected any less. lol He was the same way at ours, constantly thanking everyone for the love and for sticking with him and supporting him.

I now own Sir Elton's entire discography, so after much (MUCH!) listening and contemplation, I think I would have to list my top 20 (couldn't do a top 10!) favorite Elton songs as the following:

1. Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me
2. Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word
3. Something About The Way You Look Tonight
4. Bennie and the Jets
5. Rocket Man
6. Your Song
7. Philadelphia Freedom
8. I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues
9. Candle In The Wind
10. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
11. Sad Songs Say So Much
12. Someone Saved My Life Tonight
13. Crocodile Rock
14. Daniel
15. Little Jeannie
16. Honky Cat
17. Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding
18. Mona Lisas & The Mad Hatters
19. Hey Ahab
20. Believe

Others that I really really like but couldn't fit on the list: Burn Down The Mission, Don't Go Breaking My Heart, Can You Feel The Love Tonight, I'm Still Standing, Saturday's Alright For Fighting, Shakey Ground (of course ;) ), Nikita, Levon, Take Me To The Pilot, Sartorial Eloquence, High Flying Bird, One More Arrow, I Don't Want To Go On With You Like That, and Too Many Tears

Wow....that's a lot. I might as well have listed every song he had. LOL Obviously a lot of my top 20 are "hits," but hey....they're hits for a reason!

Ohhhhhhhhh you guys.......I can't even tell you how awesome Elton was! It was the night before his birthday and he seemed to be in great spirits! He said it was the final show in that leg of the tour so he wanted to do his best to make it special for everyone. I didn't get the floor seats that I wanted, but we got seats right to the left of the stage, about 13 rows up. They were actually AWESOME seats! We were at Elton's back, but that was totally ok because he stands up after every song and walks around, waving to everyone.

I was so excited to be able to share the "Elton experience" with my sister! She really wanted to go when he was in our town, but wasn't able to make it due to financial reasons. She's been listening to artists like Elton and the Eagles long before I ever came along. She has the longer history and is a big fan, but I am definitely more obsessed. ;) It was so awesome when we heard "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" start, then we see Elton in his black and red suit stepping up on the stage. I look over at my sister and her eyes were just sparkling and she says "there he is! I've got goosebumps!" It's so cool to experience a concert of someone you absolutely love with someone who enjoys it as well!

He went right from that into Bennie and the Jets, which was quite a change up from when I saw him the first time. Last time it was very near the end of the concert, which seemed more fitting for it I thought....considering what a huge hit is. I'll post the whole setlist at the end of the post, but I was SO EXCITED that we got to hear Honky Cat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It made up for the disappointment from not hearing "Something About The Way You Look Tonight" or "Mona Lisas & Mad Hatters." He also did "Monkey Suit" off of his album with Leon Russell, which I was really excited about as well. ALSO....I got to hear "Believe," which I wasn't expecting either! Gosh.....even just typing this up....I'm so excited just TELLING you about it! lol I wish I could just share the experience with you all!! I remember last time telling you how in awe I was of the fact that Elton signed autographs for everyone up front. He did it again Saturday night and my sister was just as in awe as I was. I know you hear all this stuff about how dramatic he can be and this and that, but I have to say.....both times I've seen him, he's seemed to humble, gracious, and appreciative. Right before he started "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me," he waved everyone up to the stage, where they remained for the rest of the show. I'm pretty sure my ears are still ringing from the show! lol WOW Nigel absolutely BEATS those drums. lol Here's the setlist and I'll post some pics at the end too!

Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting
Bennie and the Jets
Grey Seal
Levon
Madman Across The Water
Holiday Inn
Tiny Dancer
Philadelphia Freedom (LOVE this song)
Harmony
Candle In The Wind
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (especially cool to hear around because it's one of my sister's favorite songs)
Rocket Man (ALWAYS awesome!)
I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues (love how he does a lot more piano licks live)
Hey Ahab (probably my favorite song off of the new album. ROCKS live!)
Gone To Shiloh (another one I love off of the new album!)
Monkey Suit (like I said above, wasn't expecting to hear it! Another one that rocks live!)
Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding (wow...really shows off what an amazing musician Elton is)
Believe (love this song)
Someone Saved My Life Tonight (didn't remember hearing this the first time around, LOVED hearing it!)
Honky Cat (I literally squealed when it started. lol)
Sad Songs Say So Much (another one I love)
I'm Going To Be A Teenage Idol
Daniel
Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word (one of my absolute favorite Elton songs. Beautiful live!)
Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me (my FAVORITE Elton song! The entire show was amazing....but man....hearing those opening notes of this song? Chills.)
I'm Still Standing
B**** Is Back
Crocodile Rock (another one I was really excited for because this is my sister's FAVORITE EJ song. She was so excited and that made my night)
Encore: Your Song

Seriously guys....if you get the chance....DON'T miss it! See Sir Elton while you can!

I haven't seen him in a few years. If he signed any autographs, I didn't see it, or I didn't notice, but I really don't think so. I don't think that the front row was as close as it was at your show. He usually plays a large arena, so the stage is set back a bit more. I think it's unusual for an artist to sign autographs at a show, unless it's a meet and greet. That was really nice of him.
It's nice to know that he appreciates his fans.

Definitely unusual. Sometimes at the smaller venues... but the only time I've seen a person do it at a big venue like that was when Lindsey Buckingham signed CDs briefly after the encores during the 2003-2004 Fleetwood Mac Say You Will tour. Yes, I have one, and it doesn't matter that it looks like L~~~~ B~~~~~ - I know what it says and I treasure it!

Weirdly, now that he does small solo shows, he no longer signs things after the encore. Back in 2006, he would sign his solo CD if you waited for him outside the stage door after a solo show (mind you, it wasn't like there were throngs of people, so it only took him a few minutes), but now he doesn't even do that. I guess the novelty of people wanting his autograph wore off.

So, when I see stars like Elton John doing that, I definitely admire it. You go, Elton!

Yeah he must not have done it for yours, it would have been kind of hard to miss I would think. lol The front row actually has beeen set back a ways both times, but about 4 songs from the end he waves people forward so they're standing against/around the stage. You can see the first and second row in this picture, that's how far back they were. Were they even further back than that at your show?

LOL! I actually thought about that while watching him sign autographs.....could a person even tell it said "Elton John?" lol Honestly? I'm really kicking myself because I know I could have gotten down there in time and gotten an autograph. I didn't because I didn't want to leave my sister sitting there by herself and convinced myself that maybe security wouldn't let me up there. It's like I've told several people after the first concert, as well as the second, I've been to a lot of concerts and have NEVER seen A) an artist sign for as long as he has both times, and B) NEVER an artist of his status in music! I mean, he's a LEGEND for pete's sake! If I am so fortunate as to see him a third time, I WILL be doing my best to get down there and get my ticket signed or a cd or something. lol Hopefully he continues to do it and it hasn't just been two random occurances. lol

Yes, I do think the front row was much further back but the stage was also much higher up than this. This platform is not that high. Also it appeared to be a bigger stage than this. I was seated in an upper tier, but I could tell that the stage was raised at least 5 or 6 feet. They also usually have security staff around the stage and do not allow people to get that close. But if Elton waved them to come forward, then it was probably planned beforehand that he would do this and security knew about it. I wouldn't bet on him doing this at every concert.

Well, looks like this thread has been in hiding for awhile!
I had the great thrill to see Elton last Wed night at Madison Square Garden. My boyfriend & I decided to go at the last minute after hearing how great the show was on Tues night. We got some great seats on Stub Hub, at a decent price so we went for it & Elton really delivered!!!

He did almost 3 hours, with no break! Amazing show! Frankly, it was really up there with the Eagles show from last month!!
We really enjoyed it & Elton is a real crowd pleaser! If you have the opportunity to see his show...GO FOR IT!

From me too. I'm delighted that they were able to finally legitimse it.

He also now has a stand named after him at his beloved Watford FC.

Between him and Billy Joel, he is definitely my favourite 'piano man.'

Top 10 favourite Elton John songs(fairly predictable list, I suppose):

1. Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me(One of my all-time favourites--Far better than the version done with George Michael)
2. Someone Saved My Life Tonight(Having pulled my own chestnuts out of the fire a few times, this one holds a special place in my heart)
3. Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road(This one has kept me in thrall since I was a kid)
4. I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues
5. Border Song
6. Saturday Night's All Right for Fighting
7. Tiny Dancer
8. Daniel
9. The B!tch is Back
10. Island Girl
