We are all obviousy music lovers, so I was wondering if you would like to share music you have downloaded onto your ipod - not everything of course - only those gems you love so much you want to share with others. Whether it's a song or a whole album, whether it's obscure or popular, whether you found it accidentally or went searching for it, this is the place to share your finds.

Last week in the American Idol thread, I posted that this week was going to be Songs From Movies week, and asked if anybody had any ideas for what the contestants should sing. Little did I realize that I had just given myself a lot of homework, because I then began to research songs from movies. I fondly remembered two songs from the movie Phenomenon, starring John Travolta. One was Have a Little Faith in Me, performed by Jewel. That was one of the first songs I put on my ipod when I got it, however I downloaded the Mandy Moore version. I just love it.

While doing my recent research I remembered Aaron Neville's version of Crazy Love from the same movie. Unfortunately, to purchase Aaron's version from itunes you have to buy the whole album, so I purchased Van Morrison's version of Crazy Love.

So there you have it - two songs that I never would have thought of purchasing had it not been for the movie Phenomenon!

Looking up soundtrack songs brought back some happy memories for me, too!

Kind of a random sampling of some of my faves on my iPod - I'm gonna focus on the more obscure stuff / stuff you might have forgotten about - because that's more surprising than my recitation of the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, U2 and Springsteen. I looked up videos for them so you can listen to them if you like!

PM, Great topic! really! I love it!! but it's topics like this that keep me up at night, How do I choose? Anyway, I've read everyone else's and most I agree with, some.. not so much my taste and some made me go OH YEAH!! I forgot about that one.. but here are a few I didnt see on other people's lists and, while my tastes dont always mesh with other peoples, I have been enjoying these a lot.

Jet- Rollover DJ
Jet- Are you Gonna Be My Girl
Jet- Are You Gonna Be My Girl (http://tickypages.com/music/girlac.mp3) (Acoustic* HIGHLY recommend!! the guitar on this is AMAZING!)
Kid Rock- Rock and Roll Jesus
Kid Rock- So Hott (this song has some profanity in it but it ROCKS!)
Linda Ronstadt- Livin in the USA
Linda Ronstadt- Cry Like a Rainstorm
Eric Clapton- The entire Slow Hand Album
Eric Clapton- The entire Unplugged CD

I may amend this later as I lay awake at night thinking about it cursing PM for starting this topic  *G* but for now, those are my recommendations..

Eric Clapton- The entire Slow Hand Album
Eric Clapton- The entire Unplugged CD

Yes I agree with you, this are two great albums. The Unplugged CD was my first Eric Clapton album! I like both very much.

You guys, this is great! I confess, when I started this thread I figured everyone would be posting 5-10 gems and then adding to the topic as you came across different gems. I certainly have a lot of music on my ipod, but I'm only going to share the stuff that I didn't even know I liked until I found it! Hopefully we can make this an ongoing topic, because I'm always looking for different artists.

I'll have to go through my itunes list later but for now I'll just add this one that kind of took me by surprise. I recently watched the movie Twilight and was browsing some youtube videos on the movie and came across this beautiful piano piece that was supposed to be in the movie but never made it. I never would've thought about downloading something like this but i just found it to be such a beautiful song.

No Soda, it's okay! There are no strict rules. Besides, some of you guys have 10 times more stuff on your ipod than me! Mine's not even half full yet. But I always want to be sure before I download a song that it's really something I want to hear - otherwise I'll just skip it all the time!

As an exercise, I decided to go through all my favourite artists and list the top song in terms of play count. These songs are not necessarily my favourites by these artists (I won't include Eagles related songs). Perhaps these tracks could serve as recommendations.

Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps & Good Morning Good Morning (7)

WMGGW is one of the greatest songs of all time, while GMGM is of course from Sgt Pepper, an album which has never been my favourite but which I am really getting into lately.

Rolling Stones - Honky Tonk Women ( 8 )

Of course. This is in my overall Top 20 & is my 2nd favourite Stones song after Sympathy For The Devil.

Bob Dylan - Meet Me In The Morning & Like A Rolling Stone (9)

LARS requires no explanation. MMITM is from my favourite Dylan album, the magnificent Blood On The Tracks.

Van Morrison - And It Stoned Me (9)

Yes indeed. From Moondance.

Neil Young - El Dorado & Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black) (6)

El Dorado is from the underrated Freedom album, while Hey Hey is from my favourite, Rust Never Sleeps.

Dire Straits - Ride Across The River (7)

Don't let anyone tell you Brothers In Arms is overrated (although the best is Making Movies).

Mark Knopfler - Going Home (Theme From Local Hero) ( 8 )

SIGH. The honorary Geordie song. Even better, my absolute favourite solo song, Why Aye Man, has been played 7 times, and is the other honorary Geordie song.

Elton John - Border Song & Jamica Jerk-Off (7)

Well, at least a track from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road features here. I need to get this stuff into playlists.

Bee Gees - Spicks & Specks (live) (7)

Their first Australian hit went down a storm the two times I was fortunate enough to see them.

I'm back, because I don't get on here at this time of day much (4 pm) and because I inexplicably left out Led Zeppelin. Their most played tracks are Rock'n'Roll & Misty Mountain Hop (6). Robert Plant's is Big Log (5).

Randy Newman - In Germany Before The War (9)
Warren Zevon - Excitable Boy (live) (7)
Kate Bush - Hammer Horror (5)
Billy Joel - Temptation & That's Not Her Style (6)
Peter Gabriel - Blood Of Eden (6)
Phil Collins - Behind The Lines (5)
Paul Simon - The Boy In The Bubble (5)
Queen - '39 (6)
Frank Zappa - Advance Romance (4)

Well, I gotta add some more then - some more lesser known favorites from my non-Eagle favorites!

Sleeping Angel - Stevie Nicks
Soul Drifter - Lindsey Buckingham
Crystal - Buckingham Nicks
I'm So Afraid (Live) - Fleetwood Mac (I'm So Afraid is for the guitar junkies! I couldn't find the Dance version, but this one is better anyway. Still, for download, you'll probably only be able to get The Dance one from iTunes)

No FP, it's all good. There wasn't a particular idea, but you're right - it's the easiest way to let everybody hear what you're loving! And lately, instead of buying songs on Itunes, Ive just been converting YouTube audio or video and then downloading it onto my ipod.

Bottom line is this - if you have a song or songs that either have been on your ipod for awhile or you've just recently added that you think are gems and you would like to share - dis is da place!

This is an interesting thread. I love it when I "re-discover" a song from childhood or one I remember hearing from my siblings old record albums.

The Unicorn -The Irish Rovers
The Shangri-las -Sophisticated Boom, Boom and Give Him A Great Big Kiss
Time of the Season -The Zombies
Layla -Eric Clapton
The Battle of New Orleans-Johnny Horton
Mustang Sally-Wilson Pickett
Grazing in the Grass -Friends of Distinction
Let's Work Together -Canned Heat
Hallelujah -Jeff Buckley
Fishin' In the Dark -Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

FP, I am no expert. In fact it took me forever to figure it out on my own. Nancy or somebody else might have to jump in here. There are many sites that offer free downloads. I use Videora.com (if you want to download videos) and Audioro.com (for just the audios). Fairly easy instructions, even for someone like me.

Im a huge Aaron Neville fan and this version of Crazy Love is the one I fell in love with in the movies Michael and Phenomenon. I've learned to play it on my guitar and its a great one for just strumming and singing. One of the truely great love songs (BTW, as long as this is an Ipod suggestions thread, the sound track to both those movies AND Elizabethtown (one of my favorite movies) are excellent additions to any ipod!)

Regarding Van Morrison, all his stuff is on iTunes. I recommend the following albums:

Moondance (includes Crazy Love, Into The Mystic, And It Stoned Me. Most accessible album and full of the joy of living).

Beautiful Vision (includes Cleaning Windows) Van the Man's spiritual side is probably at its simplest here. He can get a bit bogged down in this stuff and it isn't necessarily for beginners.

Tupelo Honey - (includes title track, Wild Night) very folksy and Dylan influenced.

Poetic Champions Compose (includes Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child) good mixture of instrumentals and fairly catchy songs.

Best Of Vols. I & 2 (includes the old Them songs Baby Please Don't Go, Gloria & Here Comes The Night, plus the magnificent Wonderful Remark).

If you like all this then you may at last be ready for Astral Weeks (includes Madame George, Cyprus Avenue). I could list every other album but I would also say that Irish Heatbeat, with the Chietains, is a particular favourite of mine.

You know--when I read this I thought, I know I probably have tons of these kind of songs on mine! Sure enough, I kinda scanned it, and there are. Now that I am running out of space, I should probably start eliminating those songs first-the ones that are just there for sentimental reasons?

Sorry guys. In hindsight I should have thought of a more nuetral name for this topic. Really, ipod or not, it's about sharing the music that makes you happy!

Well Pm, even though I am old, everyone knows what ipod means, so I don't think you need to change it, but it's your call!

One thing I also appreciate about this thread is that it's exposing me to music I haven't heard before. For instance, I've never heard "Shannon" or Aaron Neville's "Crazy Love" before, both great songs - and those are just two examples. And it's been forever since I've thought about "The Battle of New Orleans," a song that reminds me of my dad. Love this thread!

Molly's statement about listening to country made me remember some old country favorites of mine (in addition to "All the Gold in California" and "Baby Blue" I mentioned earlier). Most of them are older because my parents used to listen to country back then and those have some happy memory associations!

ETA: What does 'embedding disabled by request' mean?

sodascouts
04-25-2009, 11:41 AM
It means that the people who put up the video have configured it so that it won't play in other venues like this forum - ie, it can't be "embedded" into posts.

To just link to it, scroll down to "Additional Options" on the page where you type your text, and uncheck "Automatically embed media (requires automatic parsing of links in text to be on)." That will keep it just a link.

Plant was a folk fanatic and it isn't that much of a stretch from folk to country. If you listen to songs like Going To California, Down By The Seaside and Hey Hey What Can I Do, as well as solo tracks like his version of If I Were A Carpenter, it isn't that hard to imagine.

Here's something I have downloaded on my ipod (thanks to the little hint I picked up from here called Freecorder.com). This young lady is a couple of our best friends daughter, Brittany Lee, and is a student at Columbia in Chicago with the rest of the band members. They are called the 409's and it looks like we might have them in our backyard for our sons graduation party! They are in the process of recording a cd now and trying to get there names out there. They do a lot of stuff that they write themselves but also covers. I just found out that they did a cover of Best Of My Love. It's different and very soulful (perhaps the was Don says he would of rather have done it???) You can find it on their MySpace.
http://www.myspace.com/the409s

and this is Brittany's MySpace which has a lot of original stuff on it.
http://www.myspace.com/brittanyleemoffitt

and here is a video from YouTube of them covering Led Zeppelin's Good Times, Bad Times

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uiydzjufkE

Anyways, you might be interested in checking out some of their stuff on these sights. I think she has a wonderful voice (but then again I am pretty partial when it comes to her since I've known her all her life!) :hilarious:

Don't worry about it Brooke. I was a late convert too. It took me a very long time because I found the length of some of the songs a bit off putting. Even now, awesome though the Physical Graffiti album is, I find it hard to remember some of it.

Regarding Robert's solo stuff I recommend the following albums:

Fate Of Nations (includes If I Were A Carpenter & 29 Palms, which is a fantastic song)
Now & Zen (includes beautiful ballad Ship Of Fools, Tall Cool One which references old Zep tracks, Heaven Knows)
Manic Nirvana (includes Hurtin' Kind (fantastic rocker), Tie Die On The Highway)
Mighty Rearranger (extremely high quality CD).

The Page/Plant No Quarter Unledded CD includes some wonderful remakes of old songs such as That's The Way, Thank You, Friends and Kashmir.

And Koala, thanks for linking to Biko. I saw him sing it too, on the Us tour. It was wonderful.

Quite honestly, I still have never gotten into Led Zeppelin's music - Stairway To Heaven is their only song that I really like. I bought Mothership a while back thinking I'd give them another listen, but it still did nothing for me. I do, however, appreciate the iconic status the band has reached in rock 'n roll history, even though, IMHO, it may be based solely on the strength of Stairway To Heaven.

As far as Nickelback - I enjoy a lot of their music. I think Chad is an extremely talented guy.

I was the same way with Pink Floyd. I just thought they were pretty wierd. Then we got a very cool stereo in a car and heard Comfortably Numb and Wish You Were Here LOUD. OMG, the guitar work is so beautiul. A few years later I got the magical dvd Pulse. Even without Roger Waters, it is fantastic!

::coming out of the closet:: Despite one of my closest friends in HS trying to convince me otherwise back in the day, I just don't like Zep's music. I take that back...there was one song I could stand, but I can't remember the name of it now... when it comes to me, I'll visit the new thread. That being said, I absolutely understand their appeal to others and their place in rock history.

On the other hand, I did like the Honeydrippers songs; and I might even like Robert Plant in his current form with Allison Kraus...I just haven't bothered to listen.

As an aside, my sons had their annual piano recital last night. Ethan played Stairway to Heaven, and brought the house (mostly 30's--50's aged-parents) down, so to speak. His song was the only one the piano teacher prefaced, saying something to the effect of going back in time and reliving the memories. (I'm bummed I can't remember her exact words...I'll have to replay the tape at some point and get it.) Graham followed with Cold Play's Viva la Vida, and did an awesome job as well--my two rock stars ! As you can tell, we have a pretty cool piano teacher. My guys definitely had the most hip songs; one other child did Bryan Adams and another Bill Withers...the rest were more traditional such as Harry Potter movie theme and of course good ol' Mozart!

I don't know many songs by the Beach Boys but the song Surfer Girl has always been a favorite of mine. When I was younger, my mom and I would drive across Oklahoma visiting our relatives and we'd be singing our heads off during the whole trip. Along with the Eagles, this Beach Boys song is one of the ones that we would always rewind and sing over and over again. I know it's a boy and girl kinda song but for me and my mom it always reminds us of those long drives together and over the years it has become "our" song.

As you guys know that I went and saw Styx for the first time about a month ago. Always been a huge fan and loved Tommy Shaw in Damn Yankees also with Jack Blade (of Night Ranger-Sister Christian). I had forgotten that they had done a solo album back in the late 80's together also and just discovered a couple of days ago that they had done a cd a couple years ago called Influence that is nothing but covers of old songs they say influenced them to do what they do now. It is fantastic! It has some great old songs that they really do justice to so I have downloaded some of them onto my ipod and am working on getting the cd thru ebay.

Here's a sample of a few...

I am no big Billy Joel fan, however, occasionally I enjoy it to hear him.
This was the first Billy Joel song I had ever heard, and
I love this song since I heard it for the first time!We didn´t Start the Fire

For one part of our final grade in ap history we have to get in groups and sing this song and make a slide show and then we have to pick 2 years that are not between 1949 and 1989 ans write a verse for each. Then we have to sing them with the chorus in between with a power point and explane why we picked the pictures we did.

Oh, and FP, your photo of Van & Eric reminds me of the Jackson Browne concert (at the same venue.) He joked that he was only able to play there because it was Eric Clapton's night off, and only under the condition that he used some of Clapton's equipment so that he wouldn't have to get rid of the whole set. Eric has done a huge stretch of shows there lately, so JB thanked him for "letting me play in his living room" ;)

That is weird. When I saw Dire Straits and Sting on successive nights back in 1985, Dire Straits were in the middle of a record breaking run of 19 nights at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. Sting joked 'I'd like to thank Dire Straits for letting me use their hall'!

"I wrote that after I listened to David Gray's album, the album that had 'Babylon' on. It was the first big album for him. I was listening to that song and just started thinking about that kind of style. He was a little bit of the inspiration for that tune." (Undercover 2005)

I'm a lyrics girl, and his lyrics are just incredible. Witty, biting, sensitive and very very clever. So for those not yet converted...

This is from his live in Manchester DVD from 2004, which is just fantastic. Some great festival footage on there as extras, too. This song, Let Me Kiss You, is from the album You Are The Quarry. (The moment from about 2.41 to 2.43 kills me!)

Most of you here know that The Cars and Benjamin Orr is one of my all time favorite bands. To be honest never paid much attention to what Benjamin or the other members did before becoming the Cars. Recently started looking into it and found out that Benjamin and Ric Ocasek had a couple of other bands before. One was called Milkwood which put out one album called How's The Weather in 1972 and then later with Cars guitarist had a band call Cap 'N Swing.

Anyways been listening to some of the Milkwood music, Benjamin sang lead on, and I think some of you here may really like it. It's kinda folksy, CSN like.

For lack of a better place to put this. This greeted me this morning when I brought up my Facebook. It's a picture of the 4 remaining original Cars in the studio working on something. Taken just days ago! How freakin' exciting is this? Supposedly they are getting ready to put out a new remastered Heartbeat City to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the album that will include 2 never released songs sung by Benjamin. But this looks as if they are working on something more!!! Dare I hope it's a new Cars album, albeit without Benjamin but this is better than nothing!

Left to right--Ric Ocasek, Greg Hawkes (keyboardist usually), David Robinson (drums and who hasn't been in the music business for years now) and Elliot Easton (guitarist-but looks as if he's playing bass here?).

If you have the correct Left to Right order, Easton is playing a 6-string Gibson SG. His left hand position looks similar to a position a basist would use, but I think he is just "plucking" strings without a pick. The second from the left (Hawkins) is playing bass in this picture.

The line, "Well, there's people dying on the streets/Sure don't make the news/While others livin' up on the hill/Singing the white boy blues", gets me every time. So freakin' true!! He is so soulful. Ok - continuing TBF and I's discussion of some of the more experimental bands from the Survivor thread.

I said I don't like Pink Floyd, Rush, Greatful Dead, or The Who. She asked me if I've listened to the deeper tracks by them. I've listened to pretty much all of their work and here are the songs I like by them.

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb, Wish You Were Here
Rush - Limelight, Closer To The Heart
Greatful Dead - Casey Jones, Touch Of Grey
The Who - Squeeze Box, Won't Get Fooled Again

Other than those songs - I can't say I really like any of their other songs. I do like some rarities/deep tracks by other bands I love although most of my favs are in fact hits. But for the above listed bands I'm afraid that's all she wrote. :hilarious:

Gonna make just a couple of suggestions for you that you might like from a couple of these bands.

I am not a fan of the Dead at all but a few years back I heard a song by them that I fell in love with, Shakedown Street. To me, it's nothing like most of their other stuff.

As for Floyd, I'll admit they are a aquired taste and I actually didn't discover them till I was in my 20s. Before that, I always figured only the "druggies" could "get" Pink Floyd and I was very anti-drug. Boy was I mistaken. One of my favorites isn't a big hit of theirs but is off of one of the most well known albums of all time, The Wall. The song is In The Flesh?. And the song Interstellar Overdrive from Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is something I could see you getting a kick out of trying to figure out all the strange sounds in. I'm assuming a lot of pedals were used in the making of that one. In fact, most of that album would be interesting for you to try to figure out. That album is definitely "experimental drug music". :hilarious:

I know Floyd's music is "different" and can understand the "experimental" tag but how amazing is David Gilmour and Roger Waters? Especially since you love guitar work, I would think you'd be all over David Gilmour. I must say I'm a bit shocked by this revelation.

I totally agree with you about The Who!! YUCK!! Can we say overrated!?!? I just don't see it!

Just some suggestions you might want to kick around with in some of your spare time. I'd be interested in hearing what you have to say about the Floyd stuff.

Okay - I guess I'm an oddball here as well because out of the four bands you all listed - Pink Floyd, Rush, Greatful Dead, or The Who, guess which is the only one I like - yep, The Who. I don't love them, but I do like quite a few of their songs. I like Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd, but beyond that I pretty much don't care for anything else by them or Rush - and, I am definitely not a deadhead. :nope:

I love Dark Side Of The Moon but I think Wish You Were Here is a better album. The 'early' stuff I really don't know. I think The Wall is totally overrated.

My husband loves Rush. The Test For Echo album is good (it includes Driven & Resist). I like One Little Victory & Roll The Bones. Their Feedback album where they do covers of 60s songs isn't bad.

I only have a compilation of the Who & I honestly think that's enough. My favourites are Who Are You, You Better You Bet, Won't Get Fooled Again, Magic Bus & Pinball Wizard.

I have NEVER heard anything by the Grateful Dead & I could never understand Rolling Stone's obsession with the band.

LOL! You are EXACTLY the person I was thinking of when I posted that video! :hilarious: I knew you'd love it!! Casey came in 3rd on American Idol (behind #2 Crystal Bowersox and #1 Lee DeWyze). He doesn't have an album out yet but just released his first single. I thought he would be signed instantly but it took a little bit and a country label signed him. BUT.....Casey's favorite type of music is the blues and he incorporates it in everything he does for the most part. He was awesome on Idol! The first contestant to ever be on that show that was also that high of a caliber musician. I saw his Idol tour live and he was awesome! He does a lot of Stevie Ray Vaughn style stuff live, which is awesome. And yes....he's definitely not bad to look at. ;) I have a couple of pics of him on my facebook page from the concert. His Mom has been a musican for many years too, she plays bass. He was in an accident a few years ago and was in the hospital for a year. They didn't think he'd live so from what he says, it's a miracle that he's here playing and singing! That about covers everything I know of him I think. lol

Going acoustic for my favorite performance by Casey on Idol. I was SO disappointed he didn't do it on the tour! When he gets high and more powerful, there's actually something in his voice that reminds me of Bob Seger.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uD6vEw2kGWQ
Covering John Mayer's Gravity....a song that I absolutely love. For some stupid reason, the judges picked JM's Daughters for him to cover on the show instead of this song. Daughter's is a great song, but when you have a blues guy like Casey, it should have been obvious to choose Gravity.

TBF, how did I miss the fact that you don't like The Who? I think Pete Townshend has a great and unique voice, I really enjoy some of his solo stuff... Mainly off, All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes. I would say I am a fan of The Who's popular music, but don't know their deep tracks. Same for Pink Floyd, I must say I really love Wish You Were Here.

Not a fan of the Dead at all. While most guys I know love Rush, I can't say I'm a fan. Most of their music sounds the same to me, it's like one long song! I can appreciate Getty Lee's talent, but not my kind of music.

Watching these videos is rekindling the Casey fan-fire I had during his time on American Idol. If he comes around here, I'll have to check him out!

As for the Who, Zeppelin, Dead, etc... I'm not much of a fan of 70s music outside of the obvious exceptions of the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac, whose music I adore above all others. Weird, I know. Perhaps it's partially because I don't consider them "70s" - I didn't discover them until the 90s, and the music is timeless (not to mention they've got new material to boot).

Because I keep a low profile and am afraid of the backlash. :hilarious:

Sorry, just don't get it! He flipping drives me crazy with the guitar smashing and nonsense! And as for Roger Daltry----YUCK!! He is his own biggest fan and I don't see where he's all that special. I don't know, but I just dislike them... a lot! Then came their halftime show at the Super Bowl last year...:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious: And I thought my thoughts were pretty well validated on that day.

Same for Pink Floyd, I must say I really love Wish You Were Here.

Some of their best work by far. I'm kinda with FP here, The Wall was overrated. Can't get much better than Dark Side Of The Moon. I just get completely mesmerized by David Gilmour and that guitar!! He's amazing!

Not a fan of the Dead at all. While most guys I know love Rush, I can't say I'm a fan. Most of their music sounds the same to me, it's like one long song! I can appreciate Getty Lee's talent, but not my kind of music.

Like I said, not a fan of the Dead but that one song is really fun.

As for Rush, they are a man's band from what I understand. I'm kind of a rarity I guess, when it comes to them. There's something about Geddy Lee's voice that I find appealing and Neil Peart is the most amazing drummer I've ever seen (sorry Don!). He ranks right up there with John Bonham. They're are a fun band and have such a great time on stage together. If you ever see them in an interview together, you'll understand what I mean. Very funny guys, tho Neil is very, very private, Geddy & Alex are hilarious!

Maleah- I will spend some time in the next couple of days watching the videos of Casey you posted. I'm excited to check them out. I guess I vaguely remember seeing bits and pieces of him when I tuned into Idol to see Steven this past season and recall being very impressed but had forgotten about him. I sure hope when an album comes out, it is more blues. I've gotten a bit scared since you mentioned he's been signed by a country label! :fear: :hilarious:

Pink Floyd and The Grateful Dead are in my list of favourite bands of all-time. They both crafted melodies and lyrics that blow me away every time I listen to them. I am quite surprised, FP, that you have never heard a Grateful Dead song. We have quite similar tastes, and I know you are a fan of lyrics, so I am fairly sure you would enjoy at least some Dead songs... Try these two. How can anyone listen to these and not be moved? I just find them incredible.

I like The Who. I love Roger Daltrey's voice and Pete Townshend is a great lyricist. Behind Blue Eyes is an example of that rawness and grit that The Who does brilliantly. Definitely one of my favourites of theirs. I'm pretty sure Roger Daltrey had a trout farm in this area for years... I'm not sure if he still does!

So I figured I'd share some of my favorite bands. It's no secret I'm a Classic Rock nut and that is the be all end all of music to me and the stuff that I listen to and play. Here is my top 10 favorite bands and my favorite song and album by each. I will leave the Eagles off of this list even though they are #1 because we already know about them. :hilarious:

Rolling Stones (Honky Tonk Women and Exile On Main Street)

Lynyrd Skynyrd (That Smell and Street Survivors)

AC/DC (You Shook Me All Night Long and Back In Black)

Aerosmith (Walk This Way and Toys In The Attic)

Fleetwood Mac (Gold Dust Woman and Rumours)

Guns N' Roses (Paradise City and Appetite For Destruction)

Led Zeppelin (Rock N' Roll and IV)

Beatles (Here Comes The Sun and Abbey Road)

Def Leppard (Pour Some Sugar On Me and Hysteria)

Journey (Don't Stop Believin' and Escape)

That is my kind of music and some of my favorite stuff. I obviously have other bands I love to death that aren't listed (Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, Bad Company, Allman Brothers, .38 Special, ZZ Top, Cream, Cheap Trick, Heart, and The Black Crowes just to name a few) but those are my top 10 not including the Eagles which are at #1 obviously with my favorite song AND album being Hotel California. But that's too obvious. ;) :D

Just thought I'd share some of my favorite stuff. Most of it if not all of it people have already heard of but I thought I'd share my favs.

Feel I need to pick this post apart a bit since you and I have similar taste in music and a lot of the same favorite bands. I found this very interesting. I do have a question also....you've said in the past how you basically enjoy the hits, and I notice a lot of your fave songs here are indeed the hits, but do you listen to EVERYTHING by your favorite bands? Just curious.

Rolling Stones (Honky Tonk Women and Exile On Main Street)

Love both of these but my fave songs (I actually have 2) by the Stones are Bitch (off of Sticky Fingers) and Slave (off of Tattoo You) and my favorite album is Sticky Fingers---it has HUGE hits on it like Wild Horses, Brown Sugar plus Bitch, Sister Morphine, Dead Flowers.

Aerosmith (Walk This Way and Toys In The Attic)My fave Aerosmith songs are Last Child off of Rocks and Mama Kin off of Aerosmith. But I also love Hangman Jury and Kings And Queens. My favorite album would probably be Rocks.

Fleetwood Mac (Gold Dust Woman and Rumours)Definitely Rumours but as far as favorite song.... not sure if I have one.

Guns N' Roses (Paradise City and Appetite For Destruction)OMG!!! Love 'em!!! Definitely Appetite but song is another hard one. Love Mr. Brownstone, My Michelle, Rocket Queen, Sweet Child.... the list goes on and on!

Led Zeppelin (Rock N' Roll and IV)Don't even ask me to pick favorites beyond Immigrant Song. Other than that, my answer would have to be ALL OF THEM!!!! Have I ever said how much I love Jimmy Page? :hilarious: He's a freakin' GOD!!!!!

Beatles (Here Comes The Sun and Abbey Road)I've made a fool of myself a lot on this board by confessing I'm not a fan. That being said, I've finally started to realize just how good their stuff is, especially John Lennon, and that's mainly thanks to my hubby and quite a few Borderers (Cathy, Julie...). Still not a fave by any means but you can teach an old dog, new tricks. The songs that stick out right now are A Day In The Life and Lennon's Imagine. WOW!!!

Journey (Don't Stop Believin' and Escape)Gotta be Journey with Steve Perry tho right? Don't know about fave album but my fave Journey song is probably Faithfully but also love Don't Stop Believin', Stone In Love, Just The Same Way, etc...

A little story about how much I loved Journey.... When Infinity came out, I believe I was about 14-15 years old. A couple friends and I were going to have a sleepover at one of the girls homes to have our first listen to it. I got very sick with tonsilitis and couldn't go. But I didn't want them to put off hearing it and since I didn't yet have it, told them to go on without me and I'd get to hear it later. (Quite a sacrifice!) Well that Saturday night, they called me and played the whole album over the phone for me. :hilarious: Now those are friends!!

Now my fave bands have been pretty obvious on this board, Eagles, Cars, Zeppelin, Sweet, Pink Floyd.... etc.... goes on and on after those first 5 bands.

Ok--I'm an idiot!! Just was speaking with my husband and told him I was listening to The Stones discography today thanks to Austin's post earlier. He asked if I started with Some Girls since that's my all time favorite Stones album. DUH!!!! Of course it is and always has been! I've been listening to Sticky Fingers a lot lately because of Wild Horses & Bitch and guess it's stuck in my head. Now that's just embarrassing!!

Austin--Something else I was thinking about while listening to Exile--I find it interesting that you said that's your favorite album yet there are no BIG hits on it for the Stones. Curious on what you like about it that makes it your favorite even tho you are a self admitted lover of the hits. Inquiring minds! :hilarious:

Tumblin' Dice, Rocks Off, and Happy are my favs from that album. Those are hits (to my knowledge). It's just got a unique sound to it especially guitar wise and it is the Stones at their highest point. I think Exile is the "Hotel California" album of the Stones. I didn't care for the guitar playing of Brian Jones at all and I'm so-so about Ron Wood. Mick Taylor is where it's at as far as the guitar duo with Keith. Same way for me and the Eagles. I prefer Joe Walsh and Don Felder, not what came before it and I'm so-so about the current duo.

Also, Exile On Main Street is THE album in which Keith switched from Gibson Guitars (Les Paul) to Fender Guitars (Telecaster). He also switched from Ampeg Amps (SVT) to Fender Amps (Tweed) right before this album also. I actually prefer the sound of Keith with Fender guitars than Gibson guitars. Where I was p*ssed when Clapton switched from Gibson to Fender as he sounded better with Gibson. But Keith sounds best on a Fender Telecaster through a Fender Tweed amp. It's just got that barky sound that you only get with Fender gear.

Sticky Fingers is my 2nd fav FWIW. I don't care for much before the Mick Taylor era (starting with Sticky Fingers) and only like Start Me Up after the Mick Taylor era.

I have always found Exile overrated. I do like the 'down & dirty' sound of it. I love Rocks Off, Casino Boogie, Tumblin' Dice, Sweet Virginia,, Shine A Light, Torn & Frayed but my absolute favourite Stones album is Sticky Fingers followed by Beggars Banquet. My favourite Stones songs are Sympathy For The Devil & Honky Tonk Women

I have said before that IV is my favourite Zep album followed by Physical Graffiti & my two favourite songs are Stairway & Kashmir.

I won't discuss the Beatles here except I am surprised at Austin's choice of Here Comes The Sun. My favourite album is Revolver. Two favourite songs are Yesterday & Norwegian Wood. I will stop there....

Fleetwood Mac - favourite song is Go Your Own Way. The truth is I only have the Fleetwood Mac & Rumours albums.

Aerosmith - I only like individual songs like Dude (Looks Like A Lady) & Janie's Got A Gun.

I'm not into the other bands mentioned.

I somehow missed this question earlier.

I did give each of my favorite bands a once through of listening to all of their stuff but each of my favorite bands have at least one album I can not stand. :hilarious: Same with songs. I do like some deeper tracks but I'd say most of it is popular stuff. So I guess I don't always listen to everything by my favorite bands.

I can do that but I would list solo artists too.

Beatles: I hate to pick a least favourite. I would say Magical Mystery Tour but I think of that as a compilation in a way. I suppose it's actually Please Please Me.
Eagles: One Of These Nights
Glenn Frey: It used to be Soul Searchin' but I think it's now The Allnighter.
Don Henley: Building The Perfect Beast
Rolling Stones: Of the ones I have, Goats Head Soup
Dire Straits: Love Over Gold
Mark Knopfler: Golden Heart
Led Zeppelin: Presence
Robert Plant: Shaken & Stirred
Elton John: I didn't keep some of the really bad ones. Of the ones I have, I would say Reg Strikes Back.
Neil Young: Tonight's The Night (OVERRATED).
Van Morrison: Pay The Devil
REM: Murmur (OVERRATED).
Bob Dylan: I have none of the albums which are considered weak. I suppose Infidels, even though it was produced by Mark Knopfler.
Randy Newman: Maybe Trouble In Paradise
Bee Gees: Still Waters
Bob Seger: Against The Wind

That's probably enough.

TimothyBFan

Now that's a different concept, isn't it? I'd can't think of any I really dislike of my top favorite artist. Especially groups like Eagles, Cars & Zeppelin---I listen to pretty much everything, maybe a couple songs for each group that I will skip but not whole albums. But I guess there's a difference between dislike and least favorite, right?

So least favorite--tho I still like.

Albums-off the top of my head

Eagles-Desperado
Cars-Door To Door
Zeppelin-Presence
Sweet-Identity Crisis (after Brian left the band)
Pink Floyd-Atom Heart Mother
Rolling Stones-Goats Head Soup or Undercover
Van Halen-Balance

I'm sure I've said it before but I'll say it again, Zeppelin in the one group that I can literally put on their discography and NOT skip a song. Even the stuff I don't care as much for, I will listen to just because their sound never ceases to amaze me. They are just that good to me. I can't even say that about the Eagles. The Eagles have been and always will be my favorite but I will still skip a couple songs. Does that make sense to anyone? Don't quite know how to explain what Zeppelin is to me.

Even Presence contains the magnificent All My Love & the pretty good In The Evening & Royal Orleans.

I feel about the Beatles the way you do about Zep, but Revolution #9 - sorry. Too much Yoko for me. My other least favourite Beatles song is Hold Me Tight but most of the time I wallow in their genius.

As for Dire Straits can I just say that while Love Over Gold contains the superb Private Investigations & Industrial Disease, Telegraph Road is overrated & the other two songs, the title track & It Never Rains, do nothing for me. As for Golden Heart I came to it late. Though it was the first solo album, I bought it after the second & third albums & it has never struck a chord with me the way the others have. It contains one indisputably great track which is Done With Bonaparte.

I just thought of another Classic Rock band to add to my list of bands I REALLY don't like.

The Doors

I cannot stand their music. It drives me batty. I can't believe I forgot to mention it. Not to mention Morrison creeps me out. :hilarious: But seriously, their songs are honestly too dark for me. It reminds me of Nirvana - and I can't stand them either (even though they aren't classic rock). But I love some darker music though. Heck, Hotel California can be considered dark and mysterious and I LOVE it and have huge emotional attachment to it. But songs like "Touch Me", "Lithium", etc are not my thing. Nirvana isn't a Classic Rock band but I still don't like them. I never cared for Cobain either... Although his "movement" changed music at the time. But I can't stand it. Too dark for me.

So I guess there are a handful of classic rock groups/artists I dislike. But for the most part I LOVE Classic Rock and it's my favorite.

LOL I don't know what it is about that music but it just makes me creeped out and drives me insane.

I'm sure if I listed all of the bands I liked that you'd probably find some you didn't like. :D I love pretty much all Classic Rock except for the bands I have mentioned.

I've already said that I don't like bands like Def Leppard or Journey. My husband loves Van Halen & they make me shrug. As for Guns'n'Roses, I am sorry, but I do not get that. At all.

I like some Doors songs. The album LA Woman is an absolute classic, especially the title track, but I do think Morrison was a pretentious whatever. As for Nirvana I like the Nevermind album but I don't think it's as mindblowingly wonderful as the critics would have us believe. It's standard competent hard rock.

Another band I know many love is Bon Jovi. I have their Greatest Hits on my iPod but to me they epitomise soulless corporate rock. The only songs of theirs I really like are Blaze of Glory & You Give Love A Bad Name (Blaze of Glory was a solo song anyway).

Ooooh---Van Halen!! LOVE them!!! Today is Sammy Hagar's birthday by the way. I like the David Lee Roth era and the Sammy Hagar era.

My favorite Roth era album would be their first,Van Halen & my favorite Hagar album would probably be 5150 or OU812. My all time favorite VH song is Push Comes To Shove off of Fair Warning. Awesome!!!

I don't think I've done this before where I share my top 10 favorite albums.

Top 10 Favorite Albums Of All Time:

1. Hotel California - Eagles (BIG surprise there. Love this album and consider it to be the masterpiece that puts all other masterpieces to shame).
2. Exile On Main Street - Rolling Stones (I know some think Exile is overrated but it is my favorite, 2nd place going to Sticky Fingers. I love those songs).
3. Street Survivors - Lynyrd Skynyrd (This album has my favorite Skynyrd songs and my favorite lineup of that band. I think it's underrated somewhat.)
4. Back In Black - AC/DC (The best hard rock album IMO. I never tire of it. I also prefer Brian over Bon vocally although I love both eras. Love this one!)
5. Toys In The Attic - Aerosmith (I think it's not only the best thing this band has ever done but is one of the albums where I love every song.)
6. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac (I absolutely LOVE this album. It has my favorite FM tunes and Stevie's tunes especially. My favorite Mac album.)
7. Appetite For Destruction - Guns N' Roses (Totally killer hard rock record by one of the last bands cut from the mold of the earlier bands.)
8. IV - Led Zeppelin (Not only my fav Zep album but one of the best classic rock recordings of that time. I love those great riffs and lyrics!)
9. Disreali Gears - Cream (One of the absolute best blues rock albums of all time. A true Supergroup. Clapton in that era with a Gibson was amazing!)
10. Rides Again - James Gang (Truly underrated album. Not only because of Joe Walsh but because of the quality of the songs/music. Great record.)

Well then, here is mine. You will be relieved to know that two of yours feature in mine.

1. Revolver - Beatles
2. Making Movies - Dire Straits
3. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John
4. Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin
5. Highway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan
6. Hotel California - Eagles
7. Blood On The Tracks - Bob Dylan
8. Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits
9. Band On The Run - Wings
10. A Night At The Opera - Queen

I don't know whether to write explanations for these or not. I had to be ruthless with Hotel California & there seemed no point in trying to push Making Movies down any longer. It would probably have been easier to do a Top 20 but I will leave that for the moment.

Sticky Fingers is JUST below Opera. The fact is I get more pleasure out of Opera, all of it,while SF has a couple of songs that aren't so great (Moonlight Mile, Can't You Hear Me Knocking). SF is still my favourite Stones album however.

Oh what the heck:

11. Sticky Fingers - Rolling Stones
12. Physical Graffiti - Led Zeppelin
13. Main Course - Bee Gees
14. Beggars Banquet - Rolling Stones
15. Long Road Out Of Eden - Eagles
16. Strange Weather - Glenn Frey
17. Abbey Road - Beatles
18. Rubber Soul - Beatles
19. The White Album - Beatles
20. Sailing To Philadelphia - Mark Knopfler

I didn't like lumping three Beatles albums together like that but I rank those three pretty much equally. I have to give an honourable mention to Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps.

I know he's not everyone's cup of tea, but I like him, and in fact prior to falling in love with Tim's voice, Barry was my favourite singer. (Though I didn't like the stuff he did after 'Here at the Mayflower'; which, incidentally, was a brilliant concept album.)
Quite by chance I found this, which has always been one of my favourite Manilow songs.

And IMO anyone who says that Barry is just plain boring hasn't listened to the lyrics of some of his songs. (And I can quote lots of examples. 'Overhauled and guaranteed' for starters!)

While digging out Christmas stuff, I had to move some of the big cases that hold my albums plus a friend left his collection to me as well. Tons of memories are in those vinyls. This is a few I saw that I loved then and still do now:
ACDC - Dirty Deeds
Janis Joplin- Big Bro & The Holding Co
Pink Floyd - Wish you were here (my nickname's been Diamond Deb since college freshman year)
Bob Seger - Live Bullet
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
Beatles - Meet the Beatles (always wondered if it's the one worth big $$)
Jimi Hendrix - Are you experienced
John Mellencamp - Lonesome Jubilee
Chicago - CTA (I played sax and my 2 bffs played trombone and trumpet, we were gonna be like Chicago!)
Blood Sweat & Tears - BS&T more horns!
Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Chuck Mangione - A Night of Magic
Led Zep - Led Zep IV
ZZ Top - Tres Hombres
Stones - Get yer ya yas out
Weather Report - Heavy Weather
Neil Young - After the gold rush
Bob Dylan & The Band - Basement Tapes
Allman Bros - Fillmore East
Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show - Sloppy Seconds

Hi--while on the topic--I was going to agree with Freypower that WalshFan88 might really like the double album Physical Graffiti--but I also wanted to add that the single album that followed Physical Graffiti--Presence--is even more immediately accessible for many Led Zeppelin fans.

Freypower
12-19-2011, 04:56 PM
Presence is actually my least favourite Zep album, although it is probably underrated; it's hard to argue with a track list that includes All My Love & Achilles Last Stand. I also like Tea For One a lot.

Lisa
12-19-2011, 06:33 PM
That's candid.

I find Presence to be a hit song after hit song album--one song to another, once you know the songs;--and that is after Physical Graffiti almost becomes that type of collection itself,--but, not everyone hears the same melodic lines the same way!

I think of Physical Graffiti as two albums; and I'd add Presence as the third album in a triple album collection of Led Zeppelin songs. The material on the two releases seems that closely related.
(In other words, listen to Physical Graffiti, listen to Presence; listen to Presence, listen to Physical Graffiti).

The themes in the lyrics of two albums are an intriguing set of stories to be drawn into and follow through both collections; the words and the music to the related sets of songs are like a saga.

WOW---I debated on this for a day or 2 and don't even know if I can give you a top 10 or 20 favorite albums. It's not that I don't have favorites it's just narrowing it down to favorites of certain bands. Like I've said tho, there is only 1 band that I will listen to the WHOLE discography of and NEVER skip a song. I can't even say that about the Eagles, only Zeppelin. I have a very hard time ever arguing one Zep album over another because I simply worship them all, tho I guess if I HAD to pick one favorite it would be Zep IV. Masterpiece.

This list will be in no particular order for the most part because I think it probably changes periodically. These are albums I cannot live without---PERIOD!

The Long Run-Eagles
Heartbeat City-The Cars
Zeppelin IV-Led Zeppelin
Appetite For Destruction-Guns N Roses
Hair Of The Dog-Nazareth
Dark Side Of The Moon-Pink Floyd
Sticky Fingers-Rolling Stones
Fair Warning-Van Halen
Desolation Boulevard-Sweet
Scarecrow-John Mellencamp
Night Moves-Bob Segar
Rumours-Fleetwood Mac
Dreamboat Annie-Heart
Lie To Me-Jonny Lang
Infinity-Journey
A Night At The Opera-Queen

I included only 1 album from each band. But there's a lot of bands I just couldn't live without of more than 1 of their albums. KWIM? So let's try this..... You're stranded on a desert island and you can take complete discographies. :hilarious: In other words, 10 bands you can't live without.
Led Zeppelin
Eagles
The Cars
Sweet
Van Halen
Journey
Heart
Pink Floyd
Rolling Stones
John Mellencamp

Fleetwood Mac
Guns N' Rsses
Journey
Led Zeppelin
Def Leppard

Mine are quite similar...no particular order...

Eagles (which would include each guy's solo stuff)
Led Zep
Stones
Pink Floyd
SRV
Beatles
Neil Young
Clapton
Mellencamp
Allman Bros

I'd try to sneak in Muddy Waters, U2, ZZ Top, Bob Seger and Skynyrd in my cleavage somehow....

I think I could do bands!

Eagles
Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young
Aerosmith
Def Leppard
Bob Seger
Rolling Stones
John Mellencamp
Rolling Stones
Pink Floyd
Beatles

:headscratch: Harder than I thought!

Freypower

I see a couple of people have included solo artists so if I really had to break it down:

Beatles
Eagles
Glenn Frey
Dire Straits
Mark Knopfler
Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
Elton John
Bob Dylan
Neil Young

It was either Young or Van Morrison & ultimately I suppose I 'enjoy' Neil's songs more than Van's.

ETA: If only bands:

Beatles
Eagles
Dire Straits
Rolling Stones
Led Zeppelin
Bee Gees
The Byrds
Electric Light Orchestra
Oasis
Queen

I edited this to include Queen rather than my original choice of Pink Floyd. I chose Oasis over REM. I have most of REM's albums but frankly a lot of it is overrated.

Interesting question. I'm going to stick with bands for simplicity's sake.

Eagles
Carbon Leaf
REM
The Wallflowers
Lifehouse
Def Leppard
Dire Straits
Edie Brickell & New Bohemians
Three Doors Down
The Decemberists

Bands that just missed the Top 10 - The Beatles, Boston, and Dawes

In no particular order, here is my list:

1. Eagles
2. Fleetwood Mac
3. Neil Young
4. Bad Company
5. Lynyrd Skynyrd
6. Allman Brothers
7. Poco
8. Bela Fleck
9. Creedence Clearwater Revival
10. Tom Petty

James Taylor, Electric Light Orchestra, and Pure Prairie League are up there too.

It's fascinating reading through everyone's faves. I have a LOT of catching up on music to do!

Picked up an interesting list of albums that the reviewer considered "cornerstones" of a good music collection - not necessarily the best, or the most popular, but albums that maybe broke new ground or provide an introduction to musical styles. The Eagles don't feature, but Gram Parsons does. There are also comments on who they influenced and albums to listen to next (e.g. from Gram to The Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers).

So - what albums would you recommend people give a listen to - whether they're on your favourites list or not? And why?

Freypower
12-28-2011, 06:25 PM
I'm not a critic. I can't divorce what 'should' be listened to from what I love. Regarding Gram Parsons, quite frankly, apart a couple of songs, he was overrated, but he Died Young & apparently that makes him sacrosanct to these people just as Kurt Cobain is. I would just say - the Beatles. Seriously. And Bob Dylan, but as I am the only Dylan fan on this board I honestly don't think there is much to be gained by me writing a passionate essay on why I think you should listen to Dylan. I may think of more later, perhaps.

Yeah, I struggle with that too - but there is so much really good music out there that I haven't yet heard... I think Gram got on the list for his influence on others as well as his own album (which was with Emmylou Harris).

And there are certain albums or songs that I think everyone should hear, and that I want to share with my children (& my nieces and nephews...) and expect to want to share with my grandchildren if I get any. Examples are Hotel California, MJ's Thriller, Staying Alive (Bee Gees) probably some Elvis (Hound Dog?), definitely some of the Beatles - and one of my personal favourites, Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World. These are songs that are both absolutely of their time - and timeless.

They may or may not be the best the artist ever did - but they are a soundtrack to an era. (Although I don't think anything really defines the 2000s... not sure what I'd pick from the last decade).

Which Dylan album would you recommend a newbie start with?

Freypower
12-30-2011, 05:54 PM
All of them.

Probably Highway 61 Revisited, which includes Like A Rolling Stone, or Blood On The Tracks, which includes Tangled Up In Blue, and is the greatest 'breakup' album of all time (apologies to Phil Collins' Face Value). I actually don't have the early protest albums, although I have most of those songs on compilations.

As you listed some landmark songs I will do the same.

Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley
I Want To Hold Your Hand - Beatles
(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - Rolling Stones
The Times They Are A-Changin' - Bob Dylan
Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix
A Whiter Shade Of Pale - Procol Harum
Respect - Aretha Franklin
What's Going On - Marvin Gaye
Good Vibrations - Beach Boys
Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
Fire & Rain - James Taylor
Money - Pink Floyd
Take It Easy - Eagles
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Anarchy In The U.K. - Sex Pistols
Born To Run - Bruce Springsteen
Sultans Of Swing - Dire Straits

Then I get to the 80s & I struggle beyond that.

Beat It - Michael Jackson
Material Girl - Madonna
Losing My Religion - REM
Don't Look Back In Anger - Oasis

Inadequate. These songs are not necessarily favourites of mine (some of them are).

This is a list which tries to give a (slightly) objective view of rock history. If you want me to write a list of songs which are completely indispensable just to me, I can do that, but in my opinion that wasn't what was asked. I interpreted 'songs everyone should hear' as meaning 'songs you consider important in the general scheme of things'.

ETA: The 'sharing with kids' part is not relevant to me as my daughter is already making her own mind up and I don't wish to push her into what she 'should' or 'should not' listen to; not yet, at any rate. I don't have any other young relatives (well, I do, but I am not in contact with them).

WalshFan88

Songs I think everyone should hear? Oh my - I could literally go on and on.

Hotel California - Eagles (the best of the best IMO)
Satisfaction - Rolling Stones
Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Back In Black - AC/DC
Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith
Rhiannon - Fleetwood Mac
Sweet Child Of Mine - Guns N' Roses
Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard
Life's Been Good - Joe Walsh
Hot Blooded - Foreigner
Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
A Day In The Life - Beatles
All Right Now - Free
Edge Of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks
Pride and Joy - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Refugee - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
Hold On Loosely - .38 Special
Don't Stop Believin' - Journey
Ridin' The Storm Out - REO Speedwagon
The Boys Of Summer - Don Henley
More Than A Feeling - Boston
Stranglehold - Ted Nugent
Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas
Sunshine Of Your Love - Cream
Johnny B Goode - Chuck Berry

Note: I just re-read EaglesKiwi's post about sharing with kids.... Umm some of my songs on here may not exactly be ummm... kid friendly. But everyone else should hear them.

One musician who I enjoy is Colm Wilkinson ( he played Phantom of the Opera and Jean Valjean in Les Miserables) but he is also an Irish folk singer who lives in Toronto! My absolute all time favourite song of his is his cover of John Lennon's Imagine.. He prefaces it with a speech about peace (He does this live too) and it makes it a breathtaking expierence.

I thought I'd bump this thread and give a list of some of my favourite albums by my favourite artists:

Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blood On The Tracks
Dire Straits - Dire Straits, Making Movies, Love Over Gold (I should also mention Mark Knopfler's excellent second solo album Sailing To Philadelphia)
Eagles - All the '70s albums but especially Desperado, On The Border and Hotel California (I also really like Don's The End Of The Innocence)
Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac (1975, aka 'The White Album') and Rumours
Led Zeppelin - Everything from I through to Physical Graffiti but especially IV, II and PG.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd
Neil Young (including with Crazy Horse) - After The Gold Rush, Harvest, Zuma, Rust Never Sleeps, Sleeps With Angels
Pink Floyd - My personal top five are all from the 1970s, these being Meddle, The Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall
Wishbone Ash - Argus

Hopefully this should show where I'm coming from musically, there were a few I didn't want to leave out but I wanted to keep it reasonably selective - I also have Second Helping and Pilgrimage by Skynyrd and Wishbone Ash respectively which I really like but the two in my list are my favourites, same with Pink Floyd where I enjoy Atom Heart Mother and The Division Bell a lot. I also considered including U2's The Joshua Tree in my list although that is the only album of theirs that I really like. I think it is an excellent record although I don't like much they've done since and am not exactly a fan of Mr Hewson.

I might come back later and pick personal favourite tracks. I wouldn't find it too easy to rank all of my favourite albums although I know Pink Floyd's Dark Side and Wish You Were Here would be somewhere near the top, with albums like Hotel California, Rumours, Led Zeppelin IV and Rust Never Sleeps also in the mix.

Having already listed a number of my favourite albums, I decided to take a different, rather mathematical approach to looking at my favourite music by creating a list which would hopefully provide a good representation of my favourite albums by ranking them in order of my own personal preference.

In order to do this, I gave every song on each album a rating of 10 according to the following scale:
10 - Brilliant
9 - Excellent
8 - Very good
7 - Good
6 - Decent
5 - Mediocre
4 - Troubled
3 - Poor
2 - Very poor
1 - Truly awful
0 - Indescribably awful

I wanted to ensure that 10/10 ratings were relatively rare otherwise they lose their value. I don't think I own any 0/10 or 1/10 tracks in my collection - those never make it as far as my iTunes.

To get the average rating for a given album, I took the total from adding together the number out of ten I handed out to each song and dividing this by the total number of songs. A few exceptions were made to this rule in unusual cases. There are some songs which I grouped together, such as Wasted Time and the reprise, as well as Speak To Me and Breathe from Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon.

I haven't rated my full collection just yet, there are some albums which are too new (including LROOE) to hand out definitive ratings to just yet, and there are others which I haven't listened to in a long time, although I would not expect these to rate very highly. I've also ignored Best Of or Greatest Hits compilations - I don't think these should be compared to the main albums.

As a result, here is my top twenty-five albums, with the rating obtained shown by each one. Albums by the Eagles are highlighted in bold.
1. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd - 9.6
2. The Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd - 9.4
3= Hotel California - 9.25
3= Led Zeppelin IV - 9.25
5. Blood On The Tracks - Bob Dylan - 9.2
6. Love Over Gold - Dire Straits - 9.2
7. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac - 9.17
8. Argus - Wishbone Ash - 9.14
9. Rust Never Sleeps - Neil Young - 9.11
10. Desperado - 9.0
11= Animals - Pink Floyd - 9.0
11= Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd - Lynyrd Skynyrd - 9.0
11= Highway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan - 9.0
11= Led Zeppelin II - 9.0
15. Led Zeppelin I - 8.89
16. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - Neil Young - 8.86
17. Meddle - Pink Floyd - 8.8
18. Bringing It All Back Home - Bob Dylan - 8.73
19. Physical Graffiti - Led Zeppelin - 8.67
20. Making Movies - Dire Straits - 8.57
21. Dire Straits - 8.56
22. After The Gold Rush - Neil Young - 8.55
23. Houses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin - 8.5
24. On The Border - 8.5
25. Fleetwood Mac - 8.45

Selected others
30= Eagles (tied with Led Zeppelin III) - 8.4
34. The End Of The Innocence - Don Henley - 8.2
38= One Of These Nights - Eagles (tied with Sailing To Philadelphia) - 8.0
43. But Seriously, Folks... - Joe Walsh - 7.86
44. The Long Run - Eagles - 7.8

If two albums have the same rating, then the album with the greater number of 10/10 songs is given the higher position. If they the same number of 10/10 songs, then they are tied although the. Oddly enough I genuinely couldn't split HC and LZ IV - both had three 10/10s from eight songs.

As you can see the Eagles have three in the top 25 with Hotel California standing in an impressive joint third alongside Led Zeppelin IV, behind the two Pink Floyd albums (which I previously identified as being very strong personal favourites). Desperado also makes the top ten.

I'm pretty happy with the top 25 overall, it seems right compared to my opinions although 3-4 albums required adjustments to their ratings. For instance, with Pink Floyd's Meddle giving the two minute throwaway joke song Seamus the same weight as the brilliant side-long Echoes, an easy 10/10, was ridiculous so I gave Echoes the same weight as the rest of the album put together. I was slightly surprised to see Neil Young's Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere above After The Gold Rush, although it makes sense when I think about it (both are very strong albums). Love Over Gold by Dire Straits is perhaps slightly too high - I probably wouldn't put it above Rust Never Sleeps or Rumours - but not too far out, and it does benefit slightly from having only five tracks.

The positions of some of those later albums I listed might not be that high in my ratings (I did this for 54 albums in total from my collection) but nonetheless their average ratings based on the quality of the songs are still fairly high. If I wanted to find some albums which didn't get high ratings I could rank the songs from my sister's Taylor Swift albums (which I have had to listen to a lot over the years...). We Are Never Getting Back Together would get a 1/10 from me! 2 if I was being very generous.

Wow! What an exercise! I only have one comment.... Sailing To Philadelphia is a far superior album to One Of These Nights (runs & hides).

No need to run and hide (at least not from me!), in fact I'm happy to reveal the ratings I gave to each of the tracks from those two albums:

ONE OF THESE NIGHTS - Eagles
One Of These Nights - 10
Too Many Hands - 8
Hollwood Waltz - 7
Journey Of The Sorcerer - 8
Lyin' Eyes - 10
Take It To The Limit - 9
Visions - 6
After The Thrill Is Gone - 9
I Wish You Peace - 5
Av = 72/9 = 8.0

I think I got these ratings right as far as my own personal opinion is concerned. Others are entitled disagree of course!

SAILING TO PHILADELPHIA - Mark Knopfler
What It Is - 10
Sailing To Philadelphia - 10
Who's Your Baby Now - 8
Baloney Again - 8
The Last Laugh - 7
Do America - 7
Silvertown Blues - 9
El Macho - 6
Prairie Wedding - 9
Wanderlust - 7
Speedway At Nazareth - 9
Junkie Doll - 7
Sands Of Nevada - 6
One More Matinee - 9
Average rating = 112/14 = 8.0

Looking at these ratings again, I don't think I did quite such a good job here. I had a listen to all of the tracks which I gave a 7 or lower another listen and these are my thoughts in retrospect:
- The Last Laugh - It's a very good duet and I'm not sure why I gave it 7 now. My bad.
- Do America - I like it but the melody and sound is a bit too generic for my liking. 7 is about right I feel.
- El Macho - I don't really dig the reggae sound. The only reggae-type song I like is D'yer Mak'er and that's really a parody of the genre. Hence, a 6.
- Wanderlust - Like it but not a favourite, so gets a 7.
- Sands Of Nevada - It had never really clicked with me until now but I definitely like it better than I used to and I certainly justify upping this to a 7.

I also think Baloney Again deserves a 9 rather than a 8, it has some really nice lyrics and some excellent guitar parts. Therefore I can amend Sailing To Philadelphia's average to 115/14 = 8.21. This puts it in 34th place, just above The End Of The Innocence (and above One Of These Nights). I can't give myself better than 5/10 for my original ratings for the album!

Freypower, you might also be interested to know that while Making Movies already has the honour of making my top 20, this is with all seven tracks included, and if my least favourite track Les Boys (which I gave a 5/10 rating) is ignored, the album gets an average of 9.17, which would put it 8th on the list.

I don't plan on revealing all of my songs ratings for the albums in my list, but if anyone's interested in any more specific details I would be happy to provide them, feel free to ask by all means.

I thought El Macho was supposed to have a slightly Spanish feel because of the title.

You are probably correct about El Macho - I have seen it being described as reggae before (on another forum I think) and didn't really know any better so went along it. Either way the song isn't one of my favourites by Mark, unfortunately.

Looking back at my list I notice I forgot to include Junkie Doll - my opinion on that song varies a bit, I think it's got a memorable chorus but at other times I find the lyrics slightly uncomfortable to listen to. I'd say I do like it overall though.

One thing I must point out is that no song on Sailing To Philadelphia gets a rating below 6 - songs which I rate as a 5 or lower, such as I Wish You Peace, are the ones that I consider skipping when listening to an album in full.

Having done a couple of lists for my favourite albums, I thought maybe it would be a good idea to show you some of my favourite songs.

For this list I decided to exclude most of my big personal favourite artists as I tend to have too many songs I love by them to narrow down just to one and in any case I thought I would make for a more interesting exercise by leaving out Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young and co (and, of course, the Eagles). The one exception to this is Fleetwood Mac, where because Rumours has always been my favourite album by them and I know exactly which song is my favourite I felt they were worth including.

I first heard some of these songs back in my childhood and bring back quite a lot of personal memories, others which I've discovered more recently are just songs that I think are top notch. I'd be more than happy to elaborate on this if there is any interest.

Blue Oyster Cult - (Don't Fear) The Reaper
Jackson Browne - Sky Blue And Black
Chris Rea - The Road To Hell
Coldplay - Don't Panic
Deep Purple - Highway Star
Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along The Watchtower (though I love Bob's original too)
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man / Free Bird (sorry... couldn't separate these two stone cold classics!)
Steely Dan - Reelin' In The Years
R.E.M. - Man On The Moon
James Taylor - Fire And Rain
Wishbone Ash - Throw Down The Sword

This probably also wouldn't be a bad time to establish my favourite Don Henley and Joe Walsh solo songs. My three Don favourites are BOS, The End Of The Innocence and The Heart Of Matter, from Joe (whose solo works I've only started to discover more recently - I'd heard of Don before I heard of the Eagles, but not Joe) I'm not quite as sure but RMW and LBG would definitely be up there, from the less obvious songs I really love Second Hand Store and Theme From Boat Weirdos.

Some of the greatest songs ever written IMO:

Genesis: Mad Man Moon

- This is beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. I'm a sucker for Tony Banks's chords and melodies, but often his lyrics are...not so fascinating. But this song is perfect in every way. And the moment when it returns from the middle section to the main part (during the words "sun and sand. sun and sand") is one of the most beautiful movements in pop music ever. In the same league as the movement from the bridge to the last verse in New Kid In Town.

The Move: What?

- I'm sure Jeff Lynne doesn't care for his pre-ELO stuff, but this one is an undeniable masterpiece. The melody reminds me a bit of "I talk to the wind" by King Crimson, but I don't care. Years ago I played this to a friend, and he went "WHAT IS THIS??", like the truth behind everything in the universe was just knocking at his door. So I'm not the only one who's been enchanted by this.8-) Only Jeff knows what some of the lyrics actually are, but I have my own theory about what is sung and what it means. (I'd LOVE to discuss this song with someone!)

Led Zeppelin: No Quarter

- I was in a band in my teens and the singer had this album. I fell in love with this song. We rehearsed at his home (his parents' house), and I remember during breaks from rehearsal I couldn't wait to go downstairs and listen to this song. Something about John Paul Jones's composition and keyboard sound plus Plant's lyrics and the weird effect in his vocals...

Moody Blues: Out And In

- I could pick a lot of Moody Blues tunes, but this is one of the not-so-well-known ones that get me every time. During the night when the stars are visible, go outside, lay down, watch the night sky and listen to this!

David Bowie: She'll Drive The Big Car

- A tragic story about a housewife who hates her life and finally drives the car to a river with her husband and kid in the car. Not that there's anything great about someone doing that, but the emotions of this woman come through in this song so well that you feel like you're in the car yourself. Especially when she keeps turning the car radio louder and louder to hide her agony.
The lyric doesn't say that she finally drives the car to the Hudson river, but according to Bowie that's how he sees the story. I feel it that way too.

Procol Harum: A Salty Dog, Too Much Between Us, Whaling Stories....

Tony Powers: Odyssey

- Tony's version can be found on YouTube, but KISS recorded this too. I love Tony AND KISS. In some ways I prefer Tony's own version and in some ways KISS's version. In Tony's version I like the singing. This is an awfully beautiful song, but Tony's singing is not pretty. But his "ragged" singing makes the song even more beautiful...if that makes sense.
On surface it seems like this song was written for someone special, but when Tony was asked about it, he said it was just about the idea of everything happening at the same time; the past and the future. Hence the chorus "Once upon, not yet. Long ago, some day". Magnificent chords!!!

Pink Floyd: The Final Cut

Roger Waters: Too Much Rope

- This is so moving, but I'm not sure why! Favorite part:

"What does it mean, this tearjerking scene, beamed into my home
That it moves me so much; why all the fuss, it's only two humans being"

JCL-:I'm quite impressed that you appreciate the original version of All a Long the Watchtower which is one of my Dylan favorites as well

I'm passionate about Dylan and maybe I should list some of my favorites even knowing I haven't heard all of his albums.

So for starters: Freewheelin' Bob Dylan is probably my favorite album by anyone. I love how rough it is and how Dylan sounds old in a very deep way. He was 22 at the time which seriously impresses me. Also the lyrics are impossibly great for a young guy. Blowing in the Wind of course is a legend and in my top ten of Dylan's songs. His sad voice and the soft and grave melody touch me immensely as does a line like "how many years can some people exist before they're allowed to be free". The whole spirit of the song is very moving and the idea of an answer blowing in the wind without anybody being able to catch it shows honest and mature insight that is rarely found. This being said I still prefer A Hard Rain's a Gonna Fall. I just love Dylan's rhythm and tone in this one. His voice when he sings " and what have you seen my blue eyed son, what have you seen my darling young one" and the words totally catch me. I also enjoy the surreal story told in poetry a lot because it creates a slideshow of beautiful bizarre images in my head. Lines like "I met one man who was wounded in love, I met another man who was wounded in hatred" are both poetic and have great meaning to me. Also I simply like expression like "highway of diamonds" and "seven sad forests". These two are the best songs on the album in my opinion. Masters of War is another great song because it's stings hard with political criticism that is good commentary of the time during which it was written. I just enjoy Dylan singing his voice full of acid. "There is one thing I know, though I'm younger than you, even Jesus would never forgive what for you do." On the other hand Bob Dylan's Dream is a beautifully sad sad song with a lot of mature hindsight but no anger. Dylan dreams of youthful hope, dreams and faith in the world that he's lost along with some first friend he ever had. Then again, true to Dylan's contradictory style, there are songs like I Shall Be Free and Honey, Allow Me Just One More Chance that make you laugh out loud with their lyrics. He rambles about phone conversations with J.F.K to improve the society, making love to Elizabeth Taylor and catching dinosaurs among other things.:hilarious:

ok, this turned out to be a rather long post, stopping now but I'll be back with maybe Bringing It All Back Home

Believe it or not, I don't have an Ipod or an mp3 player. My smartphone is my "on the go" music player. ( Thank you Spotify!)

However here is a list of my favorite songs (https://rateyourmusic.com/list/motormouth16/the_songs_that_i_must_turn_up_anytime_i_hear_them/)
Most have an explanation of why I love them.

*note about the Eagles songs: HC is ranked highest because it'sthe one I've loved the longest. Outlaw Man is my overall favorite Eagles song.

AG, do you play an instrument yourself?

If I was your ma, I'd be very proud I raised such a smart kid - I'd take all the credit for it too :)

Bluefeather, I didn't realize Bob Dylan was only 22* when he wrote "Blowin' In the Wind." Impressive, but kind of appalling too.

* Wikipedia says 21, which is even worse.

Unfortunately, I have a mild form of Cerebral Palsy that affects my left side, so I can't play an instrument, at least not now, maybe in the future.
Credit for my music tastes go to both of my parents(my mom moreso because my dad died when I was 11) and my uncle, who got me into hard rock/metal and Fleetwood Mac. :)

My uncle takes credit. My mom doesn't much.

I was reading through this thread a while back and I noticed that on page 2 FP posted a list of her most played songs in her music library. Given my (probably fairly obvious by now) love of making lists I thought I do one for my own music collection.

Back when I first noticed this I was using my old music library and as most of my favourites had been added to my library over time the play counts were heavily biased towards the songs that had been on there longest, especially as when I first started I barely had 100 songs in my collection (more like 1000 now!). I have had my new computer for long enough now that for my play counts to be meaningful and therefore I will post my most played songs by my own favourite artists.

I will leave the Eagles out of this list although I can tell you that Take It Easy is the most played (7 plays), followed by no less than ten songs that have received 5 plays each. My most played Don Henley song is Boys Of Summer (5), while there is a three way tie for Joe between the opening three tracks from But Seriously Folks (3 each).

In this list, I have included the number of plays for each song in brackets.

Bob Dylan - Like A Rolling Stone (5). What can I say? A masterpiece that changed rock music forever.

Deep Purple - Speed King/Black Night (5). Both strong songs, with the former being my slight preference of the two. However I have as yet been unable to add Machine Head to my music library and I suspect my personal favourite Highway Star would be my most played if it was in my collection.

Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing (7). A classic that just doesn't get old IMO. Still absolutely love that closing guitar solo. FWIW my most played Mark Knopfler solo song is Why Aye Man (5).

Fleetwood Mac - The Chain (6). My favourite Mac song, from my favourite Mac album. I can't argue with this one really.

Led Zeppelin - Good Times Bad Times/Immigrant Song/Tangerine (6). A three way tie here. Both of the first two are short bursts of classic Zeppelin and among my personal favourites. I'm slightly surprised Tangerine is up there with these two although I do love it.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama (4). Slightly lower play count than for most of my other favourites, mainly because I only have the first two albums in my library. I definitely like them enough to justify including them as a favourite though. I was slightly surprised to see SHA on top of my list, I do like it a lot but I think there is more to them, and especially the Second Helping, than SHA alone.

Neil Young - Tell Me Why (7). I absolutely love this song. It's Neil at his best, a thoughtful and introspective tune with beautifully clean guitar lines. Days That Used To Be is the highest song of his with Crazy Horse (6 plays). I think it's a really good rock tune, although there are others that I'd have expected to be above it.

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (8 ). Their finest song of conventional length (their only better songs IMO are their two seminal epics Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Echoes) and one of the last classics that Roger Waters and David Gilmour produced together. The contrast between their vocals is brilliant. Like Hotel California, it is six and a half minutes in length but every second is memorable.

I also have David Gilmour's first self-titled solo album, where the instrumental Mihalis is the most played song, albeit standing alone with just 3 plays.

Wishbone Ash - Blowin' Free (7). I was surprised how far ahead this was of any of their other songs (the next highest had 4 plays) but it's definitely one of my favourites by them and comes from my favourite album of theirs (Argus).

I was slightly surprised to discover I hadn't played any songs by any of the other artists in my library more than 3 times each. There were actually only five other songs with this play count: Jessica (The Allman Brothers), Good Vibrations (The Beach Boys), Don't Panic (Coldplay), Layla (Derek & The Dominos) and Fire And Rain (James Taylor). I think since all my play counts were reset to zero I've been keen to listen to my new and old favourites so haven't felt much of a need to visit the corners of my music library, so to speak.
