At the end of last year I responded to a thread titled Top 10 Favorite Singers. After some consideration and research (for memory purposes), I included Cat Stevens. I only owned two albums - Greatest Hits and Numbers, and I really only know what I learned during my research then. However, time and memories have warmed my heart again to this gentle man with the peaceful voice. What I did learn last year was this - looking at pictures and videos made me very aware that the Cat Stevens of the seventies is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen! This is what my ideal man would have looked like. Never noticed his looks back then! But now...OMG! Here he is...

I love Cat Stevens/Yusef Islam ~ he's an amazing talent but this is the song that got me.

btw, that pic of him you posted.. the first one.. he looks exactly like my sisters ex boyfriend and our good family friend, Jordy. I always had a HUGE crush on Jordy LOL

Thanks for that Ticky. Here's another video from the 1976 Earth Tour. I just love the way he looks in these. Watch the way he sways and moves his head back and forth when he sings.

I'm going to have to pull up this thread and show the videos to my hubby. He digs him and plays one of his albums rather often (I really don't know which one but it's the one with Year Of The Cat-is that also the name of the LP?). He isn't my cup of tea at all. Why the change in name? Did he change religion or something? I kind of vaguely remember hearing or reading something about him being watched or something because of the whole homeland security thing awhile back? I might be thinking of someone else.

Prettymaid

Willie, are you sure you're thinking of Cat Stevens? I thought Al Stewart did Year of the Cat (the same guy who did Time Passages).

Anyway, shortly after that 1976 Earth Tour that I've been showing vids of, Cat Stevens became a Muslim. During the first few years he refused to play his 'old' music, feeling it would be against his religion. But in the last few years he has had a change of heart.

Here's what wiki says about the 2004 incident Willie referred to. Scroll down to Denial of Entry Into the United States.

Sorry --I went and checked, wrong album. He plays Al Stewart also but the one I'm thinking of is Teaser And The Firecat with Moonshadow on it by Cat Stevens that Larry likes.

He was gorgeous, Pm. His hair kind of reminds me of another famous rock star we all know and love around here! I loved the song Morning Has Broken.

Thanks for that article, too, because I just had assumed that indeed he was guilty. Never heard anymore about it after the deportation.

IMO, he is a man of peace and that's mostly what he sang about, even back in the day.

I've got to admit, when I fell in love with the seventies version of Cat Stevens last year, I went into a kind of mourning for a month or so, realizing that he is gone, and what is there instead is Yusef Islam. When I mentioned him at work one of my co-workers thought he was dead!

Teaser & the Firecat & Tea For the Tillerman are both great albums.

If I were to have a Top 10 it would be:

1. Morning Has Broken
2. Can't Keep It In
3. Lady D'Arbanville (trivia: this song is about Patti D'Arbanville, who played Amber Twine in the Dead Dog arc of Wiseguy)
4. Wild World
5. Oh Very Young
6. Sad Lisa
7. Moonshadow
8. Ruby Love (shows his Greek roots - he was born Steven Georgiou)
9. Where Do The Children Play
10. Longer Boats

He has a new CD coming out that sounds great! He sang a few of the songs from it and played a few old favorites. There's one I just love that's a rework of Peace Train called Peace Train Blues. Im off to find out if it's available for download!

Thank you so, so much for that Ticky. I just love to listen to him talk! And it's not just the British accent - he's always had a very calming voice, and he always sounds like he's putting a lot of thought into what he's saying. It is yet to be seen whether I can go beyond my love of the seventies Cat, and embrace the music of Yousef Islam. I have seen a few of his things on youtube, but it just makes me nostalgic for the 'old' Cat. I think it helps to see him being interviewed. I hope I don't forget to tape Leno!

FP, I'm so glad you like Cat Stevens (Yousuf) and are interested in his new album. However, I think the rumor you heard about Van Morrison being on it is false. The fellow's name is James Morrison and he is an English singer-songwriter. Also featured on the album is Michelle Branch (love her) and Holly Williams, grand-daughter of Hank Williams Sr. I had never heard of James Morrison, so I pulled up this video of him. I love his voice!

Awww Troub, thanks for thinking of me!

We were in Best Buy today and I went searching for the 1976 Majikat Tour DVD (put out in 2004). They didn't have it but ironically as soon as I walked into that department they started playing a song from Yusuf's (I guess he's just going by one name now) new cd. I like it! They had lots of the new cds. I'm still not sure if I want to purchase it.

BTW, guess I'm going to have to order my dvd from Amazon.

Here's the song they were playing

I can get the Magikat special edition dvd for $18.00, or I can get it still wrapped like new for $11.00, both through amazon. Are these trustworthy?

First of all, I have to say I love this song and I really wish I could find the full version of the Chris Issac Hour to post. He told the story behind it. He was in the middle of recording this new CD and was coming to the states to record. He was stopped in the airport and detained for 7 hours. He said the men who detained him were very kind and polite. They apologized profusely but the order to detain him came from their boss. They made him remove his shoes and searched all his luggage then asked him for his autograph! Go figure!!

Well, this really opens up a whole other topic, but I'm surprised that you don't listen to a new album until you get a real sense of it and then start listening to it on the Ipod (shuffle). I wonder what everybody else does?

Oh, I understand why you use shuffle. I use it too most of the time. But when you have a new album...

FP, after you give it another listen, I'm wondering - most of the songs are very spiritual. I would imagine you wouldn't like them because of their message, but maybe not.

Now that is an interesting comment. A lot of my favourite songs have spiritual messages - including many of Yusuf's older songs. You don't have to 'believe' to be swept away by the message of My Sweet Lord, for example.

Yes, it's tonight. Eagles tickets and Yusuf on the same day - wow!

Here is undercover.com.au's review of the Melbourne show but please note I have not looked at it. I don't want to know the setlist. I glanced at the photo.

http://undercover.com.au/News-Story.aspx?id=11135_REVIEW:_Yusuf,_Rod_Laver_Arena ,_June_16,_2010

By the way I never did that review of Roadsinger that I promised. I will make a couple of comments.

The opener Welcome Home is slightlly reminiscent of Gerry Rafferty's The Ark. I feel that I'm walking into a warm, cosy pub in England when I hear it. The other tracks that I really like are Roadsinger itself and All Kinds Or Roses. He is really playing the part of the 'wandering minstrel' in this album, very much 'on the road to find out'. Thinkin' About You is a straightforward love song (or is it about more spiritual matters - fair enough if it is).

ETA: I revisited this thread & downloaded Boots & Sand. What a great track & video!

The Undercover review is very accurate and I don't have much to add. You will notice that the show featured many 'deep' album tracks (how I wish the Eagles would do this) and it was very challenging to hear a lot of songs I wasn't that familiar with.

As the review said Yusuf is very funny and entertaining - he does not come across as 'naive' as the Sydney Morning Herald saw fit to describe him and his songs. I wasn't entirely sure about the point ot the mini musical but at least it showed he was capable of pushing boundaries. He was in fine voice all night and it was great to see his long term partner Alun Davies. Yusuf himself had a stunning array of acoustic guitars.

The highlights for me were Morning Has Broken, Rubylove (I adore this because it shows his native Greek influences), Where Do The Children Play, Wild World and Miles From Nowhere. I was very pleased that All Kinds Of Roses was in the encore as it is a favourite. Of the songs I didn't know, I especially liked Midday (from An Other Cup) and Bad Brakes.

Great night and I was celebrating pretty hard after getting the Eagles tickets. I had a bit to drink!

First thing - love your new banner!

So glad to hear that you liked Boots And Sand. How did it play live? Since he played so many deep tracks, do you now wish you would have looked at the setlist beforehand so you could familiarize yourself with the ones you didn't know?

Everything sounds great except for the mini musical. I'm not sure I'd like that. Can you remember any of the things he said or the stories he told?

I would love to see him someday!

Boots & Sand was excellent and they played the video while he sang it. He did tell some stories but they were brief - Boots & Sand itself was about his 'identity problems' when trying to enter the US. Many of the stories were about how he used to struggle for a living in North London or 'on the road' and a couple about guitars. Mostlly he was trying to explain the plot of the musical such as the hero, Stormy, after leaving The Old School Yard, was working for Matthew & Son before he had to leave & return to his unsympathetic parents (Father & Son). I wish I could be more detailed.

I was glad I didn't look at the setlist because the songs worked so well that I didn't need to know what they were. I am now going to buy them from iTunes.

By the way if I had any regrets about what wasn't played - Can't Keep It In , Sad Lisa (Someone shouted out for this a few times), Oh Very Young.

I'm surprised he didn't do Oh Very Young, but I guess, just like the Eagles, he can't do everybody's favorites. I made a list from the set list of the songs I'm familiar with - just over half of them. Here it is...

The Wind
Where Do The Children Play
Medley - ( I know two of them)
Boots And Sand
Miles From Nowhere
World O' Darkness
Remember The Days Of The Old Schoolyard
Tuesday's Dead
Roadsinger
Sitting
Morning Has Broken
Wild World
Father & Son
Moonshadow
All Kinds Of Roses
Peace Train

Of the old ones I would have to say my faves are Where Do The Children Play, Miles From Nowhere, Tuesday's Dead and one of my favorite songs ever, Peace Train.
Of the new ones from this list I like Boots And Sand, Roadsinger and All Kinds of Roses. As I've stated here before, there's really not a track on Roadsinger I don't like.

BTW, as I was getting ready for work this morning I had the Ipod on shuffle and got All Kinds Of Roses. :)

You didn't know But I Might Die Tonight or On The Road To Find Out from Tea For The Tillerman? 'Road' was another highlight.

I think I may have got a bit of recognition during Sitting because I love the structure of that song and had my arm up 'conducting' to it which is when he looked my way (I was in Row 11).

No, I never owned that album. :-(

Good for you for the recognition!

Glad you enjoyed the concert, FP! I like the old stuff, but I'm not familiar with the newer tracks. He has a wonderful voice though. I'm sure I would enjoy them.

I need help and what better place to get it than from you guys that have posted in this thread.

My niece loves MY love of music (she's the one that gave me the book, Your Life In Playlist) and tries her best to stump me and gives me little projects of CD's to do, etc.... She got me this time. Apparently her FIL is a Cat Stevens fan and she wants a cd made of his stuff for him. I need suggestions on what I should put on it. What were his biggest hits? The obscure good stuff? I really haven't any idea past Moonshadow, Peace Train & Morning Has Broken, I don't know any others of his really.

While I'm waiting for you guys to help me, I'll work on my other project she gave me of J Geils stuff. :headbang:

It's my pleasure to revive this thread in honor of Cat Stevens being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame yesterday. I won't tell the story of how I fell for Cat Stevens again - it's right here if you want to read through this thread. Suffice it to say that I've always liked his music and love his 70's look. I've never seen a better specimen of a man. Lol.

I watched his entire speech on YouTube and have to say that I wasn't too impressed with it. It seemed to wander aimlessly at times, but since I'm a fan I hung in there with it. But this is the video I was happy to find - his performance of Peace Train - not only my favorite Cat Stevens song but one of my favorite songs of all time. Whenever I hear that guitar intro I am filled with hope. I love it!

Seeing him live gave me a whole new appreciation for him. I think I'll purchase some songs off of emusic. I see everyone's favorites, and that should help me decide which ones to download!

This news is days old, but I see that this thread needed to be updated.

Cat Stevens/Yusuf is finally coming back to do a very short US tour. One of his stops is Chicago, so I'm going to do my best to be there!
