I thought I would start a new thread of Rock N Roll birthdays. I know I posted Eric Burdon's birthday yesterday but thought it would be kinda cool to have a thread dedicated to these. Feel free to add whenever you know of one.

I will start out with today's...

Another musician (although not a rock'n'roller) born on May 12 is Burt Bacharach. He's more famous for songwriting than singing, but for those who don't recognize the name, he wrote What the World Needs Now (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rS0f5D3_Mao), Alfie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hUhtLYhlhE), (They Long to Be) Close to You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6inwzOooXRU), Always Something There to Remind Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KysD1mPg1is), I Say a Little Prayer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STKkWj2WpWM), Do You Know the Way to San Jose (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Mkj0qWBUb0), Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t30cX6OGO0U), Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDYAXKM828U), That's What Friends Are For (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGbnua2kSa8), and On My Own (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVvsWiT6ous), among others.

Here's a medley from 1967 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNPIQAPpSYQ).

Good one today.

Michelle Phillips of the Mamas And The Papas turns 65 today.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sN91ggtocc

Out of curiousity---California Dreamin', when they get to this part...

Stopped into a church
I passed along the way
Well, I got down on my knees
Got down on my knees

how many of you sing the next verse as "and I began to pray"? It's actually "and I pretend to pray". I just found that out in the last year and was very surprised. I really thought it was began not pretend.

Just a little trivia.

MikeA
06-04-2009, 08:44 AM
Good Catch Willie! Like you, I've always sang that using "began to pray".

Very significant song for me. Back in 1966 or 67 I had volunteered for the Army and had failed the physical and had nothing planned for that possibility! I mean NO ONE failed the Army Physical unless they had a missing limb or something!

Anyway, I had taken a job in a furniture factory building cabinets for Television Sets (Curtis Mathis!) It was noisy in there with all the saws and planers. I was sick of Arkansas and things were happening in California. I'd sing that Mama's and Papas song all night long dreaming about getting a motorcycle and making the ride to the West Coast! I should have been thinking about the saws I was operating because about the time I got to "got down on my knees!" I almost chopped two fingers off on a radial arm saw!

Fingers were salvaged with some skin grafts and the Dr. must have done a pretty good job....left hand and I can still sort of play a guitar. Hmmm, never thought about it before, maybe that's why I can't play fast <LOL>

Never did make it to California but that song remained one of my favorites. And I've always sung it wrong.

Hugh Laurie ("House") is celebrating a birthday today. You Brits are SO lucky........

And as far as I know, Mr. Paul is still kickin' it on those slabs of mahogany he is so famous for!

I played Blackjack with Billy Gibons and Dusty Hill at Ameristar in Kansas City a few years ago. Sort of funny. You'd thing "Rock Stars" would be high rollers. These guys were playing at a $5 table and betting minimums....but they did seem to know how to play the game!

They had just finished performing there and I guess were winding down.

LOL. No, no bowing. They are "just people". Freakin' talented people, but still, just people and they were out doing their thing and relaxing after work. There were just the three of us at the table not counting the dealer. The dealer had no clue as to who they were and either the rest of the gamblers there that night didn't know who they were are were too star struck to approach the table.

I was at the table first just playing one-on-one with the dealer when they came up and asked if they could play a few hands. Common Courtesy. We didn't talk much so I said nothing other than I'd been listening to their music for decades. Gibbons said "Thanks man, do you hit a soft 18 when the dealer's showin' that face card?" That was the extent of it. Good folks, but didn't seem to be in the mood for a lot of fans fauning over them. I respected that.

Too funny! Those two would be very easily recognizable, I would think!

But maybe unapproachable.(I would be too chicken to approach any celebrity, unless it was in the form of a meet and greet.) :shy:

TimothyBFan

Me too PM---I am so star struck all the time when I see someone like that.

Some people can just go right up to anyone, celebrity or not. For example, Dillon graduated with Sean Astin's (Rudy, Lord Of The Rings etc) sister in law and his wife was a graduate of the our high school so she did the commencement speech this year. He of course was there also with their family. We occasionally see him in the area when they're here visiting etc but my niece last Sunday marched right up to him with pen and program and had him sign it. I would never have that nerve! Same thing with Oprah Winfrey who use to have a home over near here, she'd be spotted around all the time and you'd hear people say they got her autograph or talked to her. Not me for sure! My daughter's dance group use to occasionally practice in the park and one day a stretch limo pulled up and the back window went down and there she sat watching the girls. When they were done she yelled "you go girls!" and they drove off. I guess they are regular people also but still, I wouldn't bother them.

MikeA
06-11-2009, 03:31 PM
Most people are "just people". There are exceptions. Tiger Woods for example is probably the most recognizable person on the planet. He is VERY unapproachable. Saw him when I went to the US Open in Tulsa in 2001. I pull for him in every tournament but am not impressed by the way he has to conduct his public appearances even when they are not supposed to be "public". Security guards everywhere.

Don Henley on the other hand, when living in Dallas could be seen at the farmer's mart and other places around town and didn't seem to be too bothered by his own notoriety. In fact, before Hotel California, it was pretty well known that while everyone had heard of the Eagles, they weren't "recognizable". Not a lot of up close appearances on TV and stuff like that and it's hard to recognize someone who performs on stage when even the close seats are pretty far back relatively speaking.

Plus, I think that most of the performers have to have a "second sense" about encountering people who are going to make a scene and make them uncomfortable. There is nothing intimidating about me and not too many have intimidated me. Not as far as being famous or rich or anything like that.

I respect their need for a certain amount of privacy when spotted in public. If Gibons and Hill had wanted to put on the "star" act at the table, I'd have gone along with it. But they didn't give any impression of wanting anyone to be impressed with them. I just enjoyed playing BJ with them. I would have like to have talked with Billy about his car collection though.

When I was a kid in Benton, Arkansas (1963, 1964 somewhere along in there), I worked at a Safeway grocery store. There was a really famous country singer who lived in Benton. Charlie Rich (The Silver Fox) was his name. He'd come in to the store every couple of weeks and buy a couple of carts of food. Back then, the sackers (those of us who sacked up groceries in paper sacks) hauled the groceries out and loaded them in the back seats or trunks of the shopper's vehicles. Most of the customers would tip us a dime or quarter if we were really lucky. Not Rich! I never got so much as a "thank you" from him. I got the impression that he though he was better than everyone else.

Good thing I was never a country fan or I'd have quit being a fan of his <LOL>

And to keep this on-topic....Joe Walsh: One of the most comfortable people to be around that I have ever met. When I met him, I felt that where he was was exactly where he wanted to be and he had a genuine interest in what was important to those he was meeting. Joe is "for real" unless he's going into that comedy persona he developed to allow him to sidestep things he didn't want to talk about.

It's too bad that so many 'celebrities' let their notoriety go to their heads. The way I see it, they're just plain people doing a JOB and earning a living like everyone else. Only difference is their jobs put their faces out there where people can recognize them. I'll bet Don, Glenn, Joe and Timothy put their pants on like everyone else in the world -- one leg at a time -- and they're entitled to their privacy when they aren't on stage. How many of you have heard the interview where Timothy talks about 'taking out the garbage' when he's at home?!?

Mike, I'm sorry but I think troub is absolutely right here. Some things need to be thoroughly researched - I mean we just can't take your word for it on something this important!!!

Now, as far as approaching celebrities, I am reluctant to do it most of the time. But I'm not saying I never would. However, I would assess the situation before I did it to see if I felt like it was an appropriate time.

This song is a tradition in my family on Thanksgiving. Every Thanksgiving morning at 9:20, the local radio station plays this song. We always make sure we are in the car on the way to my parents so we can listen to it. I bet we have been doing that for 12 to 15 years now.

And Rick Springfield will be 61 on Sunday.

We had Jesse McCartney at our venue a while ago and he covered "Jessie's Girl." I've never particularly cared for the song, but I was horrified on Springield's behalf.

Not to be foundlessly maudlin, but I'm experiencing difficulty deciding who we're going to be remembering in forty years. "Jay-Z is 70 today. He was known for such classics as 'Big Pimpin.'" (Sigh.) I really dislike my generation. I'm trying, but... Nevermind. Better cut off before I embark upon another diatribe. Off to hide from society with Pink Moon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_Moon).

I love the Bee Gees, especially Barry! I have that video of Melbourne & have spent many, many happy hours watching it. I saw the Bee Gees on their "Spirits Having Flown" tour in Montreal in 1979. I made a special trip just to see them. Wow!

Did you know that Barry's birthday was also his 39th wedding anniversary! Quite a record these days, particularly in the entertainment industry.

Although I still love Barry (& the Bee Gees) ,Glenn (& the Eagles) has taken over the #1 spot in my heart.

The second time we saw them at the Sydney Cricket Ground in (I think) 2007 they sang the national anthem of their homeland, the Isle of Man. It was incredibly moving. Maurice's death was a tragedy (in the real sense, not the 'Tragedy' sense). They wrote and sang some of the greatest songs of all time. I'm with you, GL.

HUGE birthday for me today!!!!!! I've made my love for another bass player pretty obvious on this board before and today would of been his birthday.

Today would of been the beautiful Benjamin Orr's 62nd birthday. Unfortunately he passed away on October 3rd in 2000 from pancreatic cancer after a very short 5 month battle with it. He played bass and sang about 50% of the Cars songs in the 70's and 80's.

"Preston is one of several people sometimes referred to by outsiders as a Fifth Beatle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth_Beatle). At one point during the Get Back sessions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Get_Back_sessions), John even threw out the idea of having him as the "Fifth Beatle" (Paul countered that it was bad enough with four.)"

Linda McCartney broke so many girls' hearts when she married Paul. He was the first Beatle to marry. But I think she was good for him. It's been written that after The Beatles broke up, Paul went into a depression and wasn't getting dressed or wanting to get out of bed. Linda's the one who told him to get his a** in gear. I'm pretty sure it was Paul who wanted Linda to be part of the band - not the other way around. Maybe that's what kept them together all those years. She didn't sit home waiting for him. They were always together.

Well said, PM. I was one of those young girls whose heart was broken when Paul and Linda married. But they were, obviously, soul mates and very much in love. So much so that I was also heartbroken when she passed away at such a young age. I only hope that Paul can find the same kind of happiness in his remaining years that he had with Linda. However, sometimes those are once in a lifetime relationships. So no matter what happens, he is so lucky for the time they had together.

Now, as far as yesterday's birthday's, September 23 is quite impressive ... Ray Charles, the Boss, AND MikeA. Mike, I guess the only explanation for the December 23rd thing is that lots of folks like to get into the holiday spirit a little early!

Paul was the LAST Beatle to marry. John was married to Cynthia, Ringo to Maureen and George to Patti, years before Paul married Linda. Paul's marriage to Linda pretty much coincided with John's to Yoko.

How old is he Pm! I read recently that he says he's over being a rock star and just enjoys doing his thing.

ETA: He's 58. Went back a page and TBF answered that one! Love, love him! I got to see him once. Would love to do it again!

I just watched Farm Aid streaming live on the internet on Sunday, October 4, and John Mellencamp was one of the highlights for me! He put on a fantastic concert-I wanted it to go on even longer.
I had the good fortune to attend Farm Aid in 2002, and JM did a wonderful concert then too. He is truly a wonderful performer. Happy Birthday, John, and here's to many many more!

Love all the comments about John Mellencamp. Brooke--if you ever get the chance to see him, DO IT!! He's is as good now as he was in the 80's. Seen him several times and the rest of my family saw him this past summer and thought he was great.

Today Johnny Ramone would of been 61 and CJ Ramone is 44.

Thanks for the memories, Willie!. I saw Gary Puckett & The Union Gap in concert sometime in the late 60's. I was too young to go without an adult so my Dad took my best friend & me. I remember him taking cotton wool to put in his ears, not so much for Gary but for the local band that opened for them, The Ruptured Duct Repair Service !

Hello all. I just found this board while searching for lyrics for Gilda Rader's amazing performance on SNL, Candy Slice and the Slicers. ( original 1979 SNL tape ) Of course spoofing Patti Smith. It brought me here , as on about page 10 someone mentions her BD. Does anyone have the lyrics for that song she sang" Give me Mick". They actually did a great job singing it . I can't understand the first part of the song, but the last part is understandable. I hope this utube video will load.

Also I am a huge fan of Warren Zevon. Bd is Jan 24, 1947- Sept 7, 2003 (age 56)

also a huge fan of Meat Loaf. I believe his BD is September 27, 1947.That would make him 62 this past September.

BAT OUT OF H*LL, (JIM IS ON THE PIANO )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBZDTK9Yhko&feature=related

That video should have The amazing Jim Steinman, his writer on piano. Jim was born Nov1-1947 , so he is about to be 61. My avatar is the picture from the back cover of the Bat out of h*ll album. What a team they were and may be again. Jim has written for many other people but he has wrote for Meat Loaf the most.

another singer I am really into is
Leonard Cohen. born sept 21, 1934-age 75. He is still touring and I just found him recently and feel in love with his music.

Now there is a real little birthday that I will hardly pay attention to :lie:of a certain bass player who turns 62 tomorrow and since I'm sure there will be a celebration done right somewhere else on the board tomorrow, I will leave it alone in this thread.
