From McKinneyNews.com:

Don Henley Hits Thackerville

What do you do when you find out one of the most prolific and talented singer-songwriters of the last century is playing within (bionic) earshot of McKinney? Well, hell, you jump in the car, smash the gas, and blow down the highway about seventy miles or so to Thackerville, Oklahoma – if, of course, you’ve got the cash ($75-$110) to play with the big boys.

Sunday evening, Don Henley (perhaps you recognize the name) of the Eagles fame (surely you’ve heard of them) took 80 minutes of his spare time (the mother ship is heading for Europe in a couple of weeks to continue its tour in support of the band’s latest multi-platinum selling, “The Long Road Out of Eden”) to set the historical record straight to about 1,500 mostly old-schoolers at the Winstar Casino who were more than willing to be schooled by Henley’s particular brand of intellectual artistry: poignant and poetic social commentary presented in a easily digested – pop -- musical format.

Henley, in what appeared to be a clean black button-down shirt and faded jeans, took to the stage with a throbbing – and scathing – “Dirty Laundry,” a nod to the superficial, “bubble-headed bleach blonde” sensibilities of a sensational national press, winding his way through a plethora of hits from his first three solo albums, mixing in a handful of 70's-era Eagles classics – that he penned – for good measure.

The infamously curmudgeonly Henley was quite affable on this Sunday night, taking time to regale the audience with a chalk-dry wit and juicy asides related to the songs known the world over.

“It was 42 degrees….a real picnic,” Henley deadpanned referencing an outdoor gig he had just performed the night before in North-Eastern Oklahoma.

At another juncture, Henley introduced the foreboding guitar and drum-driven “Witchy Woman,” a song about a woman – “not Stevie Nicks” – that he knew in Los Angeles in 1972.

Later, Henley, born in Gilmer, Texas, tantalized the audience with an introduction to his mid-80s hit, “Last Worthless Evening.”

It’s about a “beautiful blonde actress who I will not name,” said Henley. The woman, Henley said, was sitting at a table with Jack Nicholson at a party with a lot of famous people. She didn’t go home with Nicholson, and Henley “went home and wrote [a] song” about the experience.

It wasn’t until 61-year-old Henley, his distressed, rusted-nail voice easily as strong as it was thirty years ago, tackled the “Heart of Matter,” that a real glimpse was offered into the heart of a man wrestling with his legacy – and mortality.

Within the context of a song about time and forgiveness, Henley, in an obvious acknowledgement of the passing of time and his own fleeting relevancy, sang, “fans seem to scatter” instead of “friends seem to scatter.”

An insignificant error, you might be tempted to surmise. But for a guy like Henley, this was no error.

Indeed, it must be difficult – no matter what the paycheck – looking at a roomful of mostly gray hair and the inevitable downslide of one's career.

And perhaps this, though unspoken, was what the night was about. It was about an aging rocker-poet coming to terms with his own demise in front of an aging audience confronting its own.

“This is a show for has-beens,” a woman said with an air of regret before the show began. I didn’t want to honor her repellant suggestion. But in the end, she was right. Time, no matter the magnitude of talent, will not be denied.

Surely Don Henley knew – and knows – as much.

Overall a fairly good review, but I think the writer must've been feeling HIS own mortality a bit. Has-beens? I don't think so!

Black button-down and faded jeans--YES!!!

Ouch!:fear:"chalk-dry wit"(Huh?)... "own fleeting relevancy" .... "Aging rock-poet" :birthday:...."demise"...."aging audience confronting its own demise" Yikes! :brickwall:

Me thinks the reviewer doth protest too much and was more concerned with nit picking than anything else.

Very nice start but the last few paragraphs were pretty bogus I think! I don't know anyone, whether they like the Eagles or not, would call them "has beens".

I know what you mean about going through withdrawal-I had the same problem back in November! However, you do have the Eagles to look forward to in the summer, and I'm sure you'll have the time of your life at that concert too!

Ok, first of all, was that dude that wrote that review even there? Was he really at the same concert as us? That review was load of crap because Don was in very fine form last night both vocally and visually. And we heard Don sing "Friends seem to scatter" and not "Fans seem to scatter." Trust us, we were especially into this song.

I'm not going to completely complain about our supposed "3rd Row" seats because we did have a great view but still I feel a little bit decieved. Apparently the first 2 rows were held for comp and promotional seats. When we first got there last night, we heard that they were doing drawings for Henley tickets and I'm assuming that whoever won those got to sit right up front :brickwall:. I've already expressed my feelings about this before in another thread so i'll just leave it at that.

There was some crazy guy in the "actual" second row right in front of Don who was dancing throughout the majority of the concert. During All She Wants To Do Is Dance he got right up front and was dancing like a mad man. I didn't see this but Lou said that Don was watching him for a minute with a look of mild bemusement. Don wasn't angry at the guy and he didn't smile but he had to have found that funny because a lot of people (including us) were laughing at the guy.

I have the best friend in the whole world :). I mentioned before that my friend, Christie, that went with me to the show in Columbia offered to switch seats with Lou. Well, while Lou and I were rockin out and enjoying the show from our seats, Christie was in her seat working her magic. She somehow managed to get me and Lou a Don Henley pick. We couldn't believe it when she gave them to us. I am forever grateful for her for doing that. I'm still in shock that she did that for us. She is the BEST!!!

I straight out do not believe the 'fans' seem to scatter bit. These are some of the harshest comments I have ever read, and as for the 'downslide of one's career' that is laughable.

If the guy didn't want to honour the 'repellent suggestion' why then did he agree with it?

I am just glad that Troub & Peek saw through this rubbish. The photos were superb.

That picture of you and Jess is one for the ages. But Lou, if you're gonna hang out on the prairie lands, you're gonna have to get some sunglasses and wear them. It's the only way you can keep the dust (and ROCKS) out of your eyes. I guess that Oklahoma is still considered Prairie Lands even though back in the 30's all the topsoil blew up into Kansas and Nebraska.

I believe I read somewhere that WinStar is now the largest casino in the world. Larger than the MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, Foxwoods, ALL of them!

I can't even imagine that. I've stayed at MGM Grand in Las Vegas and that place is unbelievably huge! The only way I could get anywhere from the elevators to any specific part of the casino, was to walk counterclockwise around the entire casino. If I tried to take a shortcut, I'd end up somewhere I'd been but not where I wanted to be!

Well, It's not the largest in the world but I'm sure it's in the top 10. One of my bosses said that there's only about 3 or 4 casinos in Vegas that are bigger. WinStar is only going to get bigger with time. It's over twice the size I saw it at nearly 2 years ago and they aren't even finished adding to it.

Lou, I have a question for you and you don't need to answer if you don't want. I'm sure getting on that plane to come home was bitter sweet. I remember someone else here (can't remember who) telling about taking a flight to another country to see Glenn and on the way home on the plane having a moment where she broke down and cried because she was so happy to have gotten to do it but was sad because it was all over. This has really stuck with me since I read it, probably about a year ago, because I could so relate to that and I'm sure, had it been me, I would of probably done the same thing. Any emotional rollercoaster feelings for you?

Troubadour
05-20-2009, 10:43 AM
Well, Jess will tell you - right after the WinStar concert, it hit me. I was slumped on Jess's shoulder at the bar, completely gutted that it was all over. That I had seen my last glimpse of Don for the moment, and that I was flying back home to 'reality' the next day. I really didn't want to leave the US and these new friends that I'd only just really begun to know.

But, I pulled myself together, and I've done a lot of thinking and talking about the whole thing. It was all incredible and I'm so lucky to have had this chance. Plus, I am seeing Don again (with the guys) in July, so I don't have too long to wait. I think I'd have been even more down if I didn't have that to look forward to!

I definitely had a few moments at the airport and on the plane though, where I was close to tears. It's just such a come-down. It's only when you have time to process and look at the photos and realise what an amazing time you had that you put it into perspective. Talking to you guys helps A LOT.

I had a couple of emotional moments during the concerts too. When Don sang New York Minute at Downstream, I got all choked up and had to fight back tears. I've always loved that song but his voice sounded so strong and passionate. He sang the "you can get out of the rain" line a couple of times and really emphasized it. Hearing him sing that and "things can get pretty strange/everything can change" as I looked around at the vast blue sky and realised that I was on the other side of the world in a place I'd dreamed about most of my life... It just got to me. It's still getting to me now, as I write this! But it was a good emotion. I was ecstatic. It struck me that I was really there.

Hello all!!!
Yes i had a great time at the Winstar show but it was over way to soon!! I also could have done w/o the guy that thought we were there to see him and kept dancing and jumping around!!! I talked to him before the show and he was extremely happy to be there. He had fun as well and that's all that matters. I noticed Scott and Michael looking over at him and laughing. BTW did you see Michael dancing during ASWTDID>? I was laughing my butt off!!!

I wish i could have made it to the other shows, but Thackerville was the only one i had vacation time for. I went to several Eagles shows from Jan thru March, so i had to slow down.

Don mentioned in one of the Oklahoma(i think it was one of them) interviews that since they have been on the road a long time, the band will probably take a break after they get back and wait till next year to resume. However he did promise fall solo shows. I just hope Tunica is on the list. I haven't ever been there and i can drive it. Wouldn't mind hitting Hilton Head again either. He was suppose to play there a couple of years ago. I drove all the way down and the day before the show ILAA called me and said that he had cancelled due to bad weather. He promised to reschedule that one, but so far he hasn't done so. Who knows what they will decide when they get back other than taking August off. I do know that i will be really jonsin for a show when fall rolls around!!!!

First of all, welcome, Kelle. Great to have you here on The Border. I would have loved to have been at the shows, and I'll bet Michael was a hoot dancing to ASWTDID.

I would also love it if any of the guys to do some solo shows during the fall if the Eagles are going to take a break. However, I also still hold out hope that there will be a few Eagles shows scheduled then, even if they don't book a full month or two.

thanks for the welcome! Who knows what they are going to decide on>? My checking account would love if they waited until next year, but my fix for another show just can't wait that long!!! LOL. people at work think i am absolutely crazy for going to see the same show over and over again. However they just don't realize what an adreilane (misp) rush it is to be with friends that you have met on the board or haven't seen in a long time, and in a place you have never been too. Not to mention an added bonus.... seeing the guys on stage. No concert is the same

I've just been catching up with this thread, and before my lunchtime ends , I just wanted to say, TBF, that I'm flattered my story of my flight home from London just over a year ago has stuck with you, even though you didn't remember it was me! I still actually can't believe that I went through with that trip. It was all over much too soon.:-(

Willie, the person you are referring to in your post reminds me of Mrs. Frey when she shared her adventures of flying to London from South Africa to see the Eagles opening LROOE concert last year. When I read her accounts of her trip, I got very emotional just as I did reading Lou's heartfelt post. Regarding the dreaded PEW or in this case, PDW, I can totally relate to how you are feeling. I've been there, and done that several times. :) :-( :) :-( :) :-( :headscratch:

Awww, Dreamer, thanks for remembering. I can completely relate to your row of smilies...

This is a lovely post, Lou. I've really enjoyed browsing this thread and looking at your lovely photos. As you've already gathered, I can relate to your experiences. The hardest part for me was knowing that the Eagles were performing their second gig at the 02 while I was on the plane flying home. Only the Lord knows how much I wanted to be at that gig. It just so happens that LROOE was part of the plane's audio entertainment on offer, and suddenly, when I listened to "Waiting In The Weeds", the tears came. "No More Cloudy Days" just made it worse. I had to quickly recover, as I stared out the window, otherwise the air hostess ("chicken or beef?") would have thought me crazy!

Hey Lou and Jess!
not sure if y'all remember me, but we spoke after the show. I was the one with the Eagles tat on her back (like the one one of your friends had on her leg) and from Tn!!!

I am disappointed that they didn't do I Will Not Go Quitely, that is one of my favs. I watched the Utube y'all posted and Scott was rocking out!!!

Don't feel alone, i cried all the way back to Tn. on the plane. I am hoping that i can make the fall solo shows as well as the final farewell on the west coast. Even though i love all the guys, Scott is the one i am there to see.

Hope to see y'all at more shows in the future!!
Kelle

Welcome to The Border from me, too, Kelle! :yay: I'm glad you had such a fantastic time at Don's show.

thanks for the warm welcome guys and YES i remember you Mike!! Verna as well. i was with Susie and David at the Thackerville show and i told them how you laughed at me when i cashed out on a slot machine in Vegas. i was so excited i won 1.25!!! (my first time playing slots guys!!! needless to say i won 250.00 at the airport when i was leaving)

when they hit Vegas i am so there. i hope that everyone else gets to join as well, i had a blast and it was great having so many Eagles fans there.

i saw Rob at the M&G in Chicago. He is on facebook as well. check my page out, i have a pic up where Joe signed my back (underneath my tattoo) at the atlanta show.

it hasn't been a month since i have seen 1 of the Eagles and i am ready for them to come back where i can go to another show.

BTW do y'all think Joe will do anymore m&G's? i emailed Becca and asked her, but she never replied back. anyone know anything?

Hey Kelle,
Im Rhonda on Facebook so you'll see me round there too.
Last time we had a members chat on JWFC Becca said the ILAA M&Gs wouldnt be effecting the club M&Gs BUT... there hasnt been one since ILAA started having them so.. well you do the math.
IF they come to Vegas, Im SOOOOO there!! even if I have to sell a kidney! Of course, as soon as they hit the west coast, I'm there!! (damn.. i need a job..I have an addiction to support!)

It would be FANtastic if they booked Vegas. But I worry about Vegas surviving us again <LOL>.

Did you realize THAT Vegas concert was my first time EVER in a casino Kelle? Truth! I think we've flown out there either 19 or 20 times since then and seen Joe in concert twice (James Gang and Stone Temple Pilots). That was the last Eagles cert we've been to.

I'm ready for another.

Rhonda,
i am the same way. i have a job, but i am spending more than i make traveling all over the place to be with friends and of course to see the guys. People ask me don't i get tired of seeing the same material, and even though i get burnt out on other bands, for some reason i never tire of hearing the same songs. Of course being with friends and places i have never been to adds to the excitement as well. I have been doing this for several years and i am not about to stop now. I love the west coast and look forward to going there, and i would love to go to Australia. Not sure i am going to be able to handle the long plane ride, but if i want to go bad enuff, i will deal with it. Hopefully we will be able to hook up and catch a show when the west coast rolls around. if they wait until next year like they are thinking of doing now, then i am there for sure!!!

Mike!
Now i am really surprised!! Here i thought i was learning from a professional!!! LOL How is Verna doing? she is still on my messenger and i see her pop on and offline, but i haven't written. It's been so long, i am not sure if she even remembers me (unless she says ohh yea the goofy one that couldn't figure out the slot machine LOL)

Ahhh Vegas will be able to handle us i am sure of it. I love that place. I dont' spend too much time in the casinos (as you can tell from statement above) but i love just walking around at night looking at all the lights. I am like a raccoon, i am attracted to shiny objects :hilarious:

Hopefully more dates will be announced soon, but from what Don said, they may take a break after they return. I know it's coming to an end but I have a feeling they will drag it out as long as they can. As far as Joe didn't he mention that The James Gang and him were going to put another album out? I can't remember if he told us that at a M&G or if i read it somewhere. Ask Rob maybe it was at the Chicago M&G. I have only seen the JG once and that was in Atlanta. Joe is just awesome hands down. I also heard that Marjorie rocks out at the shows so i can't imagine her asking him to quit the road for a while.

I was at that M&G (2004?) in Chitown. I remember Joe saying that James Gang was getting together again "soon" at the time. I also remember him saying he had more than enough "in the can" for a new Rock n Roll solo recording. I WANT to remember him saying something about the James Gang recording again, but in honesty, I can't remember him actually saying that.

Now, that's not to say it wasn't stated Kelle. Very possible that he could have mentioned it when he, Dale and Jimmy did that Video Chat.

As for the Casinos...I'm a pretty quick study. After that concert at MGM Grand, I came back home and really started studying two "games": Blackjack and Video Poker. Besides Craps, those are the ONLY two games in the house where the player has an almost even or even a positive advantage in odds of winning if played perfectly and if the player is selective about which machine or table to play on. The next time and virtually every time since, I've won or broken even and THAT is cheap entertainment when you consider the perks a player in Vegas gets (free Hotels, free rooms, free or next to free meals!)

We've been out there twice this year already and are planning another if the work schedules cooperate.

Australia: That's a trip I have to keep in my dreams. I'd LOVE to go there but there is no way I could endure the flight!

I just remembered that I forgot to mention that Don did do a meet and greet at the this show. While Christie was talking to the lady that got us the guitar picks, she was trying to see if she could get us backstage (I knew it was a long shot but it was worth a try). Christie said the lady told her that Don already did a meet and greet before the show started and wouldn't be doing any afterwards. How do people get into these meet and greets? I figured, for this particular concert, the casino gave away the m&g's along with the concert tickets that we heard them advertising when we got there.

i would say the M&G was just for the high rollers due to the fact that the 1st 2 rows were reserved for them as well as promoters and friends of the band. At least that is what i was told when i talked to the box office. Could be contest winners from local radio stations as well????

forgot to mention how people get into M&G's. I am a member of Joe's fan club so that is how i have met him. ILAA did M&G's for Don in the past. I signed up for one in Hilton Head, but he cancelled due to the weather

I would love to meet Don, but at the time, i was really hoping to run into Scott backstage instead!!! I finally got my chance at the Borgata though and loved every minute of it!!!
