Time for the "Don Henley Music Videos" Survivor, where we vote off Don's solo music videos until we get to the last one standing!

I'm going to list all Don’s solo music videos here. Vote for the video that you feel should be eliminated from the list. The video that gets the most votes will be taken off of the list (or, in the language of Survivor, "voted off of the island.") Each round, one more video will get axed, until there's only one left. Remember: you're voting for your LEAST favorite, not your favorite.

Each round will last 48 hours after posting to give people a chance to vote who don't post every day. That means that the first round will end at 8:00 Eastern Standard Time the day after tomorrow. If you miss a round, don't think you can't play. It's all good!

Since there may be discussion posts, be sure to make it clear when you are casting your vote. Votes cannot be cast after the cut off time of 8:00 on the second day, and they cannot be changed once you have voted. This holds true even if your vote is a mistake. Sorry, them's the rules!

If you get confused about what round we are in, look at this post. I'll always update it to reflect the current round. Also feel free to post any questions if you don't understand what's going on.

If there is a tie in any round, then ALL votes from ALL previous rounds are tallied and whichever video has the most prior votes is eliminated. That’s the way it’s done on the real show, that’s the way it’s done here. If there is a complete tie with prior votes (Murphy’s Law), then I'll have a sudden-death trivia question ready. The first person who answers it correctly gets to break the tie. The odds of that happening are slim, but you never know, and it's good to be prepared.

The tie-breaker question will be asked one hour after results are in, if there is need for it. The exception is the last round. If the tie-breaker does not resolve the last round, then the tie will be allowed to stand.

We also have immunity questions. We won't have immunity questions on the first or second-to-last-rounds, and of course we won't have them for the last round, lol. However, for the other rounds, we will.

Here's how immunity questions work. After the end of the round, I ask a Henley-related question. The first person who answers the question correctly gets to pick a remaining video to be immune - no one can vote for it on the next round. You must include both your answer and the video you wish to be immune in your post in order for it to count. I'll allow two hours for someone to answer. If no one gets it right by then, then we continue the round as normal without any video being immune. You only get one guess per round, so be careful!

EL, while I agree that the EIDN video is EEK, I don’t agree with you that the video makes no sense. I totally get the message the video is supposed to convey. The problem I have with it is that while attempting to depict Don’s past lifestyle with the horrible imagery and characters, they forget to show how "everything is different now". I think that the video maybe could have actually been effective if it were less grotesque and they had shown a contrast between the two lives.

I do agree though that the video just doesn’t work to complement the song at all. It actually detracts from the song and it deserves to be the first to be voted off. However, since it won’t need my help, I am going to cast a strategic vote.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with a few of these and if I have seen them, it's been EONS ago and so I don't feel it's fair for me to play. I did order my dvd this morning so with any luck I will get it very soon and can get in on the last few rounds.

As far as EIDN, I love the song, but just can't watch that video! At first I was going to vote for Johnny, but even that video is better than this one!

Brooke, remember, this is voting on the video, not the song. The Heart of the Matter is my favorite solo song of Henley's. I find it incredibly moving. However, the video is bizarre and nonsensical to the point of being immensely distracting from the power of the song. I'm gonna be voting for it once we get rid of the wretched video for Everything Is Different Now.

Edited to add: To be fair, I did conduct my own analysis of the video for DHO (http://www.donhenleyonline.com), and this is what I came up with:

Perhaps the old man represents past hurt and resentment and the child a future without such baggage. The workers (http://www.donhenleyonline.com/images/hotm13.jpg) perhaps represent the human struggle, fraught with a sense of hopelessness and oppression. Henley's old-fashioned surroundings from different time periods (http://www.donhenleyonline.com/images/hotm15.jpg)might (and I emphasize MIGHT) signify him as an observer outside of time. This is just me guessing, though.

I can certainly understand the eekiness of EIDN.

HOTM is one of the multi-layered videos that I tend to like more than just the cut and dry subjects. I know it speaks of forgiveness between a man and woman relationship but for someone who isn't in a relationship it also helps to convey more than just the message of a relationship between a man and woman. Maybe the effects of the broken relationship is where the little girl comes in, I guess this because of the angry look she gives as she looks in the circus tent. The woman in the field is working to restore something and the man is so weighed down with something that he finally hits the ground. Of course I too am guessing. :)

For what it's worth I agree with Soda about the HOTM video. To me the imagery has nothing to do with the song.

Regarding EIDN, I agree with Dreamer's comments about it. He forgot to include the 'everything is different now' part.

For what it's worth I agree with Soda about the HOTM video. To me the imagery has nothing to do with the song.

Regarding EIDN, I agree with Dreamer's comments about it. He forgot to include the 'everything is different now' part.

The imagery for me comes when a song is made into a video, also when I hear the song, but that is only me creating my own imagery. The video lets the artist create something that reflects the general population rather than just words in a song. And we the viewers are able to understand the artist as well as how it could reflect our lives. Visualization helps me to understand what is meant or could be meant by the written/sung lyrics.

And since EIDN went down in flames, the "everything is different now" is not clearly present but as in personal interpretation, in the end he did turn around and leave it all behind. I think the grotesqueness comes from looking on a former life and seeing it wasn't as pretty as it was at the time.

Yes, that is all in the lyrics, but in this game we are specifically discussing the video. Nowhere in the video do we ever see how his life has been turned around. I take your point about the grotesque being emphasised here, but there is far too much of that angle in this video.

In the video for EIDN, he does leave the lifestyle behind symbolically in that "Normal Don (http://www.donhenleyonline.com/images/eidn05.jpg)" walks away from "Frankendon (http://www.donhenleyonline.com/images/eidn07.jpg)." FrankenDon is still in the midst of the mutant people who represent the apparently extreme depth of Don's depravity in his "past life." Since the mutants seem to be engaged in a lot of sexualized behavior - examples include two mutants literally eating each other's tongues while making out, a headless stripper dancing on a bar, a lover's caresses that become a fisting of grotesquely unnatural gelatinus skin - it seems the focus is on sexual depravity. All I can say is YIKES.

However, I do see what FFL is saying. I just wish that they had given us more than those few seconds to represent the positive change in his life.

But as for this round....

OK-disregard my previous post here---I do know these videos and have refreshed my memory of the ones I wasn't sure of.

Second--thanks to all of you that managed to get EIDN voted off first-I truly forgot how awful and disturbing that video is.

Third- Going on record here with you EL---I love Johnny Can't Read and all of the 80's cheesiness about it!

Fourth-I must go on record as saying I love to see a lot of the artist in my videos. The stories are ok and all, especially if they kind of explain the song, but it's not a deal breaker for me. Again, I don't tend to analyze as much as I just like to enjoy watching a video and a performance. I know, I'm just simple. :hilarious:

He did do a lot of these, didn't he? At the time some artists seemed to think they were being 'profound' if the thing was shot in B&W and he had so much success with the BOS video that I guess he thought it worked. When we get to Glenn's videos, I think only three are in black & white.

I agree with FP that he got so many accolades for Boys of Summer, shot in black and white, that Henley decided to run with it. Hey, at least Last Worthless Evening was blue-tinged. ;) It was also considered more artsy and suited for a serious subject. There is also a very retro feel to The End of the Innocence which would justify black and white at least in that case.

Also, I think I've heard black and white videos are supposed to be more flattering.... hence How Long. Not sure if I see it but that's what they say.

I'll explain it the best I can in as little words as possible. Before I see most videos I've already heard the song numerous times, having already created a personal image of the songs meaning. As most of us know you can't approach Don's songs without knowing he writes lyrics that can be interpreted other ways, sorta cryptic messages, if you will.

Simply the song itself speaks of a love relationship between a man and woman long gone, and trying to get passed the guilt/hurt by forgiving and forgetting. The video reflects this which is why you see Don walking alone and sitting alone on the couch. The inclusion of the old man, lady worker, child, etc. take the song to a whole other level. So that is why I can take the imagery and relate it to the song itself. Because I think past face value. Now the imagery itself may seem odd but because I approach music on a personal level it's easy for me to take more from a video/song than what is intended by the creators of either craft.

Soda, your analysis seems about as reasonable of anything else that I can come up with. And FFL, thanks for your explanation. However, I must admit I am still unable to take the imagery from the video and effectively relate it to the song itself. I think I get what the creators were trying to do in the video, but I don't think it works at all. The song itself is so beautiful with its straight-forward eloquence that the video does absolutely nothing that helps me appreciate or understand the song better. In fact, trying to analyze the connection is just a huge distraction for me. So for that reason ...

I think the For My Wedding video, obviously, has a sweet sentiment, but I can also see where it is a bit repetitious and mundane. This could be an interesting round. I'll wait until later to vote as I usually do.

I agree that The Last Worthless Evening video is very sexy, even though I'm not that fond of long-haired Don. It is also a very well-done video, IMO. I think the monochrome blue really adds to the mood and sensuality. I also agree that it is now time for Not Enough Love In the World to go, and it looks as if it will. However, LWE isn't my favorite video and because I am voting strategically ...

Wow - this looks like the closest round in the game yet. These are both great videos, IMO and it's tough to choose between the two. They are both very well done even though they are very different. After giving it a lot of thought, I decided that I prefer ASWTDID if I have to decide between the two. The video has a lot of action that makes it very entertaining, and does such a great job of complementing a great song. However, I am withholding my vote for now to see what happens in the round.

Yes Soda that is chilling. When I first heard this song, way back when I was going through the most difficult time of my life. The words hit closer to home than any other song in the entire history of music. Before hearing this song my family life had reached a point of not returning back to normal and I believe if it wasn't for the words of this song and the entire cd altogether my wounds wouldn't have healed as quickly as they did.

As far as the song itself goes, I actually prefer Boys of Summer over End of the Innocence. BOS is one of my favorite Don solo songs and I think it totally rocks out live but that doesn't mean that I don't like EOTI. I think it's a beautiful song. The lyrics are great and Don's voice is simply beautiful when he sings it. I had to watch both videos several times to come to a decision. IMO, EOTI seems to convey more of what the song is about than BOS does. I did take the hotness of Don into consideration as well. I am a fan of the long hair on Don. I prefer it over the 80's type of hair in the BOS vid but my Don hair preference was not my decision maker. For me, it came down to which video tells the story of the song better and I feel like it is EOTI. I vote for End Of The Innocence for the win.

First of all, congratulations to The End of the Innocence on its win.

As I said earlier, either of these videos were worthy of winning this game, IMO. Quite honestly, even if you prefer one over the other, I'm not sure how anyone could say either of them don't work. In both cases, the songs are only enhanced by the brilliant videos, which is why they deservingly finished in the top two spots in this game.

Congrats to EOTI!!!! IMO it is a really great video. I was hoping for Last Worthless Evening to win but I'm happy with EOTI taking first place. It's a very lovely song and it doesn't hurt that Don looks pretty hot in the video.
