OMG troub - that is awesome! Thanks for the detective work - who would've ever guessed that. I reckon I'll definitely have to visit 'my bar' in Scotland whenever I finally make it over to Europe.

I was too slow to take a picture when we drove past it, but I just did a quick search online and, sure enough, here's the very place! It's in Wimborne, Dorset.

I've just heard 'Fire and Rain' on the radio as the 'car tune of the day'. They play it after the 8am news, then again between 5pm and 6pm. When you hear it the second time you call in and could get a prize.

Of course this song reminded me of our own Troubadour - Lou!

This is more generalized, but I'm teaching William Wordsworth's poetry in my British Literature II class this summer... and he wrote a play called The Borderers (http://www.bartleby.com/145/ww120.html). I'm not teaching it - we're focusing on his poetry - but it's pretty good!

I might have to download that.

We know of at least one work of literature that shall we say, influenced one of his Dire Straits songs, don't we? Do I have to tell you which one?!

There's another obvious one too - the Thomas Pynchon book Mason-Dixon which was the background for the song Sailing To Philadelphia.

I don't mean this to sound too morbid (because it actually made me smile), but I was reminded of Julie when I was at my uncle Martyn's funeral on the Friday before Christmas. I don't know if this is really where I should put this, but when it happened, I did think of Julie both times.

Had to do some running this morning and when I started the car, the satellite was on The Bridge and playing New Kid In Town, the next song I didn't care for (don't remember what it was) so scanned a few stations and landed on Classic Vinyl which was playing New Kid In Town also. A couple hours later, I had to run back out and Larry had taken the car to the car wash after I had brought it home earlier and sat the regular radio on a local classic rock channel. When I started the car, New Kid In Town was playing. I had to laugh and thought how Julie would of loved to have been riding with me today. :hilarious:

How can a Grammy-winning, #1 hit be underrated?

Freypower
01-12-2013, 06:17 PM
The band don't play it live any more & it is now taken for granted that it will never be played live again (see Retrospective Tour thread) and nobody ever mentions it when they talk about their favourite Eagles songs, except me. Even when discussing the Hotel California album it is rarely even mentioned. It's always the title track, LITFL, Wasted Time, VOL & The Last Resort, then after that PMIAR & TALA. NKIT seems to come last.

I don't expect everyone else to share my opinion of it but I believe it doesn't get the recognition or praise it deserves.

TimothyBFan
01-12-2013, 06:23 PM
It's become one of my favorites over the years. Back when HC first came out it wasn't but the last 10 years or so, it's became one that I never skip and listen to often.

Ive always been a dreamer
01-12-2013, 07:00 PM
Well Willie - I sure wouldn't have minded being with you - that's for sure. I think there are a lot of people on this board who praise the song. I believe it has finished 2nd in both of our Hotel California Survivor Games and I know I sure gave it high praises when arguing for it. The song also finished in the Top 10 in our Top 40 Eagles Songs poll that we did last year. I don't really consider it underrated either.

Awe!!!! Thanks, Lou!

An old friend of mine from high school who's now in Virginia, sings in a band (always did) and they have added this to their setlist and when they perform it, he dedicates it to me. He posted a video of it on his FB and tagged me several months ago. I cried when I saw it. I thought that was so sweet. Shortly after we connected on FB again after 30 years, he had posted on my wall that every time he has heard that song for several years, he thinks of me because he remembered how much I loved the Cars and that song. Isn't it funny how even after 30 years, people can still associate certain songs with people?

Absolutely. Music is so powerful; there's nothing that really compares to it in terms of the emotional connections we have with songs. The 'soundtrack to your life' thing is a cliche, but it's so accurate. They get us through some of the hardest times of our lives and help us to feel good during the best times. It's so cool when other people associate certain songs or bands with you, too. Your love for Benjamin obviously always shone through, Willie!

Tiffanny Twisted

for me music is a specific song does take me back to happy type times in my life..(sad too I guess)
It just is such a powerful part of my life.
When I hear certain music, like a song or artist and I think of other border buddies I thinks its like an angel whispering on my shoulder and sending good thoughts and blessigns to that other person..jmo

I also find...that there is a non eagles song that everytime I hear it, it ususlly is when I am having a hard time...its like a message from my cousin in heaven(she passed at 42 from breast cancer). so for me music is very very powerful

I was reminded of 2 Borderers on Saturday, Brooke & Prettymaid. We were in a consignment shop looking around and they had a bunch of Fiestaware in several colors. After the conversation in Every Picture thread, I immediately thought of them.

Prettymaid
06-17-2013, 08:47 AM
That's great! Love my Fiestaware!

Silly (but true) story about using my Fiestaware. I always rotate them back into the cabinet after they've been washed, so that they get equal ware. Every morning I reach in and grab a bowl for my cereal and a mug for my tea. I always take the 'next in line'. Most days I pull out one color of bowl and a different color mug...BUT - on the days I pull out the same color of both I always say, "Oooh, matching set! It's going to be a good day!" LOL! Kind of like when the stars are aligned! Hubby just rolls his eyes...

TimothyBFan

You can't see me but I'm rolling my eyes right now. :hilarious: Seriously tho, I LOVE Fiestaware but have never invested in it. It is a big expense and with so many kids in and out of my house, I just don't think I want to risk it.

Love the Fiestaware! I particularly like the shape of the bowls, as in Brooke's picture. My husband & I have had a mild fascination with it for many years, but had only collected a few pieces, mugs, bowls & pitchers, on infrequent trips to the states. We were going to go for the mix & match look too & have purchased 4 place settings of the Peacock blue. Other colours will have to wait until we get to the US again, probably not anytime soon. We use the odd pieces all the time but I'm keeping the place settings until we get more colours. I find that it's such a strong colour to use by itself.

06-17-2013, 10:16 AM
Pm, love it! I'd never thought of that and just grab what ever is up front! Now I can see myself saying that if I get a 'matching set'!

I am rather preoccupied/anal with putting them in my plate rack and open shelving so that the colors are all mixed up though. Never put similar colors next to each other! :hand:

I bought a couple of books the other day (F. It always reminds me of PM, not only because she loves him, but because of the fact that I know she loves the performance in that YouTube vid (as I do)... and that she made some gorgeous screen caps of Kootch from that same video. I've just been looking back at them now. LOVE.

I have been rather quiet on this subject in recent times. I was expecting a tour to have happened by now & it hasn't so that has dampened my enthusiasm somewhat. I need a fix before August 12 (Mark's birthday).

I have seen that. It was excellent; not least because it reunited him with Dire Straits bassist John Illsley. I have been meaning to do some screen shots of it because he revisits Windows in Newcastle, where he bought his first guitar. On our last visit there we passed by it, of course; as hubby used to go there all the time. Shots of Mark walking around near Grey's Monument... :faint:

My 'fix' will probably consist of playing all the Dire Straits tracks on the iPod. Since all the play counts were reset I have an excuse.

Unfortunately Rhodes has quite a lot of traffic accidents. It's very laid-back, the roads are winding and the driving is a little scary... Taxis and coaches drive fast and they overtake often. There are beautiful monuments along the roadsides that look like little chapels. We wondered what they were, until the tour guide on our coach trip to Rhodes explained that they were there to mark the site of a fatal accident. The bigger, the more fatalities. It was sad to see - especially as Rhodes is so safe in every other aspect.

Robert has had his share of tough times. What happened to his son was so sad. I remember seeing the footage of him playing as a little boy in the river with his dad and sibling in The Song Remains The Same. I can't even imagine losing a child of that age unexpectedly...

Then, the  came on and it occurred to me that I wasn't in Houston and Deb wasn't in Virginia. I felt pretty foolish, but in my defense, the lady was her twin separated at birth.

this is funny Dreamer...but I have done it several times too...for some reason...several times I've seen a girl with long blond hair...I think oh it's VA...then I think duh...no it's not...what are you thinking??? lol

I was out shopping last night and I heard Maneater by Hall & Oates. I immediately thought of our very own Tiffany Twisted and her other half, JAHH, which was nice since it's been such a long time since I've seen the two of you. Hopefully, there will be another excellent Eagles adventure for us again in the future.

I approve of Desire too. I absolutely love it. I think it's Dylan's most underrated album. It is full of absolutely wonderful songs starting with Hurricane, Romance In Durango & Sara.

You've reminded me, I meant to post this the other day. I'm in the midst of watching all the JAG shows, and in one, Major MacKenzie was asked what she was looking for out of life. Thank goodness that you are OK HB - that is the main thing. I hope your meeting goes well. I had an uninsured driver hit my car about 15 years ago, again totalling it.
