Time for the Glenn Frey Music Video Survivor, where we vote off Glenn's solo music videos until we get to the last one standing!

If you're new, for a basic overview of the game, see this post: Survivor Overview (https://eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6551&postcount=7)

I'm going to list all Glenn’s solo music videos here. Vote for the video that you feel should be eliminated from the list. The video that gets the most votes will be taken off of the list (or, in the language of Survivor, "voted off of the island.") Each round, one more video will get axed, until there's only one left. Remember: you're voting for your LEAST favorite, not your favorite.

Each round will last 48 hours after posting to give people a chance to vote who don't post every day. That means that the first round will end at 8:00 Eastern the day after tomorrow. If you miss a round, don't think you can't play. It's all good!

Since there may be discussion posts, be sure to make it clear when you are casting your vote. Votes cannot be cast after the cut off time of 8:00 on the second day, and they cannot be changed once you have voted. This holds true even if your vote is a mistake. Sorry, them's the rules!

If you get confused about what round we are in, look at this post. I'll always update it to reflect the current round. Also feel free to post any questions if you don't understand what's going on.

If there is a tie in any round, then ALL votes from ALL previous rounds are tallied and whichever video has the most prior votes is eliminated. That’s the way it’s done on the real show, that’s the way it’s done here. If there is a complete tie with prior votes (Murphy’s Law), then I'll have a sudden-death trivia question ready. The first person who answers it correctly gets to break the tie. The odds of that happening are slim, but you never know, and it's good to be prepared.

The tie-breaker question will be asked one hour after results are in, if there is need for it. The exception is the last round. If the tie-breaker does not resolve the last round, then the tie will be allowed to stand.

We also have immunity questions. We won't have immunity questions on the second-to-last-round, and of course we won't have them for the last round, lol. However, for the other rounds, we will.

Here's how immunity questions work. After the end of the round, I ask a Frey video-related question. The first person who answers the question correctly gets to pick a remaining video to be immune - no one can vote for it on the next round. You must include both your answer and the video you wish to be immune in your post in order for it to count. I'll allow two hours for someone to answer. If no one gets it right by then, then we continue the round as normal without any video being immune. You only get one guess per round, so be careful!

So now – let’s have some fun and enjoy the game!

And the winner is....

Glenn's barely in it, and when he is, there's no variety. It's black-and-white long shots, mid-shots and close-ups of him standing at a microphone and singing. Eh.

I cast my vote for The Heat Is On.

OK, well the first vote is easy for me. I cast my vote for Love In the 21st Century.

Why wasn't the Strange Weather album commerically successful? The videos are so DRAB! And this one.... it's weird. I understand why it's weird but I can't 'relate' to it. And whoever told Glenn to bleach his hair was just... wrong.

Soda, I am surprised you went for THIO. Give me shots of him standing at a mic & singing any day!

Soda, I am surprised you went for THIO. Give me shots of him standing at a mic & singing any day!

I see your point. I just figured I'd vote for a video where he's hardly in it than the video that he's all over.

Regardless, Love in the 21st century is an awful video and if it goes first, I won't mind.

I'm torn here, but I'm going to go with Soda. I never watched it much because nothing in it (other than Glenn) appealed to me. The sax player bothers me & that is my least favourite look of Glenn's.

I cast my vote for The Heat Is On.

I think LIT21C is really kinda funny, but whatever inspired Glenn to go blond.........bad idea! :brickwall:

And I agree about THIO. Not nearly enough Glenn.

My vote goes to Love In The 21st Century.

This is a no brainer for me as well. 'Love in the 21st Century' HAS to go. I can understand the sentiments of the song and Glenn  performs it well on the Dublin video but the actual video to the song does nothing for me I'm afraid. I just don't like it.

Prettymaid

This is my first time seeing most of these videos. One thing particularly struck me about the songs themselves. (I realize we're voting on the video - if this isn't the place to discuss this you can move it.) I noticed in at least ten of the songs there is a saxaphone, and in several of the videos there is a showcase of the sax player. I love the fact that most of Glenn's songs have a sax in them. (No More Cloudy Days also comes to mind, although there's no video for it.) Obviously Glenn loves the sax too. Has he ever talked about that - the fact that he uses the sax in a lot of his songs?

Now for my vote. As I watched the videos I took notes, and after LIT21C I wrote YUCK. That sums it up for me.

I cast my vote for Love In The 21st Century.

Ive always been a dreamer
08-29-2009, 02:56 PM
Well, I was almost certain that Love In the 21st Century would be the first to go, but unlike most of you, I don't think it is horrible (well, except for Glenn's blonde hair ). I actually think the video is entertaining and creative, and does a good job of illustrating the message of the song. But as as said, I'm not at all surprised that it will be the first to be eliminated. In any event, I'm going to look toward the future. For the same reason that some voted for The Heat Is On ...

I cast my vote for Part of Me, Part of You.

(Totally awesome song, but the video is just so so - more Glenn please.)

Yep, the makers of those two videos for songs which first appeared on soundtracks seem to think it's important to show clips from the MOVIE. WhatEVER. lol

Too bad they didn't take a cue from You Belong to the City, where you only briefly see Miami Vice playing on a few TVs while the video focus on Glenn. As it should be! ;)

You know, I was talking to Dreamer about this - I think one of the things we women find repulsive about the video (as a rule) is that the video is essentially males watching strippers and getting off. Women don't usually find that enjoyable and don't wish to be subjected to it for over four minutes.

Perhaps if Glenn had given the ladies some eye candy by looking his usual gorgeous self, it would have been somewhat tolerable... but NO! He dyes his hair blond and looks awful, depriving us even of that! It's downright misogynistic! lol

I'm late to this but I see that the majority of people have already voted for The Heat Is On. I know a vote for another song could be important later if there is a tie but I take people's point that there isn't enough of Glenn in it, although what we do see of him is pretty good, especially how he goes from the suit to half undone shirt.

However I will go with The Heat Is On too.

I take people's point that there isn't enough of Glenn in it, although what we do see of him is pretty good, especially how he goes from the suit to half undone shirt.

Oh yeah, that's the highlight of the video. Can you imagine:

Female wardrobe assistant: Mr. Frey, I need you to lose some of these clothes.

Glenn: Huh?

FWA: You know - to - um - to convey that "The Heat Is On." It's too hot for you to wear that jacket.

Glenn: I can see that. It's getting hotter, so I take my jacket off. I get it.

FWA: And that tie.

Glenn: Sure, OK.

FWA: And now... the shirt, unbutton the shirt. Here, let me. [unbuttons several buttons]

Glenn: Um... I think two buttons is enough....

FWA: [sighs] OK. [turns to director] Is there a water spritzer bottle around here? I'd like to spray Glenn with water... you know, so he'll look all... sweaty... dripping down his face and chest and... you know, 'cause when the heat is on you get all... sweaty...

Director: I think our wardrobe assistant needs to be removed from the set.

Just curious... Why is everyone voting for The Heat Is On? I have always really liked it. Is it because, as Soda said, there isn't enough Glenn in it? And I also really like Some Kind Of Blue, and not just because of a certain backup singer that's in it.

I cast my vote for Sexy Girl. I feel like I'm watching Glenn being a stalker.

I wish those of us who wanted to keep The Heat Is On could have formed an alliance and voted for the same song. Then it might have had a chance...

Just curious... Why is everyone voting for The Heat Is On? I have always really liked it. Is it because, as Soda said, there isn't enough Glenn in it?

I think my reason is probably the biggest one. But there's something else, too. The way they film Glenn is kind of distorted. Has anyone else noticed that? It looks like the length to width ratio has been altered so that his face is slightly elongated. At first I thought it was my copy but it's been that way with every copy I've seen.

Watch his segments carefully, especially the close-ups:

08-31-2009, 11:21 AM
First of all - I'm wondering who that wardrobe assistant is that Soda mentioned - anybody got a clue ...

And I also agree that it is too early for The Heat Is On to be eliminated. While I agree that the video doesn't have enough Glenn and what part that's there is somewhat distorted, I still think it is an entertaining video. As I said last round, I actually think it's better than the other soundtrack video, POMPOY. Too bad we didn't try to form a coalition sooner to try to save it. It's not impossible to save it now, but it's a huge long shot to say the least. Everyone that voted last round who hasn't voted yet would have to vote for Some Kind of Blue. So, without further ado ...

I cast my vote for Some Kind of Blue.

Brooke

Hmmmm, yeah, I can see what you mean. Maybe it's just an optical illusion with the dark stubble making his face look narrower than usual and the pouffy hair on top and slicked back sides.

As much as I like the stubble on Glenn, I do not like this video. There's just not enough Glenn. This happens on a couple more of his videos, too.

Since it seems to be going down anyway, I'm going to vote strategically. I cast my vote for I Found Somebody Glenn, you need to open your eyes when you sing to me. I want to look in to those beautiful baby blues!

Clearly, having gleefully punted this one at the first opportunity, I'm not a fan of the video; however, I took the bleached hair as symbolic of the "21st century." The song seemed a bit tongue-in-cheek, and I interpreted the hair as a continuation: "nothing's the same, so time to bleach out." He evidenced a fairly impressive clairvoyance foreshadowing the "look" that would ultimately be adopted by both the geek in Hackers and the sociopath in Girl, Interrupted.

Must concur with TBF's anti-stalking sentiments and cast my vote for Sexy Girl. Too L&O:SVU for my taste.

sodascouts
08-31-2009, 06:44 PM
Yeah, I get that there was a concept behind the video and they had reasons for what they were doing. I understand the deliberate artificiality of the high-contrast colors and bleached out lighting, the attempt to create a sense of dehumanization that even extends to Glenn himself. He no longer looks "real." As for the lewd content, I'm sure the (undoubtedly male) directors/video producers thought that there was no better way to demonstrate the depersonalization of romance than showing guys getting off to strippers and phone sex operators.

But if the enactment of your concept turns off massive amounts of people, I don't think it furthers the main objective... sell records!

I don't really understand the 'stalking' comments about Sexy Girl. For the most part it isn't really Glenn who is chasing her around. He finds her attractive and he has a very corny 'dream' about her but I don't understand why this could be interpreted as 'stalking'.

Just a general comment: there are far too many women in Glenn's videos anyway. Would it not have been nice if he had made a video that consists of only him (oh, POMPOY... well, you can barely see him in that). I do not count Cindy's role in ROD here, or I guess Janie's in Smuggler's Blues. I just find it annoying that he felt he has to share the spotlight.

Well, FP, I totally agree with you about your first comment, but totally disagree with you about the second one.

I don't see Sexy Girl as 'stalker Glenn' either, and particularly disagree with ABM's L&O - SVU reference. IMO, the intent of video is far too light-hearted to be taken seriously as 'stalkeresque'.

However, as far as Glenn including others in his videos, I think it was a wise choice whether it be women or men. Not being willing to share the spotlight may come across as a bit too egotistical as far as I’m concerned.

I think there's only one part of the Sexy Girl video where Glenn seems to step a bit over the line in that he peeks out of his window and watches "sexy girl" put on lingerie. But since he never leaves his house (unlike other guys in the video who go to peer through a hole in the fence) and apparently sexy girl likes to display herself (at one point in the video she hangs lingerie in her front yard) I can give him a pass.

My next vote is for Livin' Right. Cindy or no Cindy, it is so dated and cheesy that I still find it embarrassing.

 Soda.

One other comment to make a case for the Sexy Girl video. This is one of those rare cases where I think the video is actually better than the song. I just think the video is so cute that it actually makes the song more enjoyable for me. As I said before, to me, it is obvious that the intent here was light-hearted humor. It also doesn't hurt that Glenn is so uber hot in this video that I think it should be named Sexy Guy.

Dreamer, once again, I agree with you completely!

I like the video for Sexy Girl and also Livin' Right better than the songs by themselves. I think they are both cute and funny and really fit the songs well. I know they are a bit dorky, but hey.......Glenn is hot in both of them and it was the 80's!

 Brooke!

I also totally agree with your comments about Livin' Right. I think it is a very entertaining video. As I've said before, cheesy, yet satisfying! Freypower, I must say that I am perplexed over your statement that the Livin' Right video is dated. To me, a video with a theme of living right and working out to get in shape doesn't get outdated???

I also want to comment on the Part of Me, Part of You video. Now, of course, the song is incredible, but the video just doesn't have a lot going for it unless you want a preview of the Thelma and Louise movie. As a soundtrack video, at least the clips from the Beverly Hills Cop movie in The Heat Is On video are exciting and entertaining. There just doesn't seem to be much logic between the selection of movie clips and the song in the POMPOY video. And definitely not enough Glenn. Even if he appears alone, the way the video was shot doesn't do him much justice. I hope the awesomeness of the song doesn't keep this video around longer than it deserves to be. But, as is usual for me, I am going to wait to see what happens in this round before casting my vote.

It is far too '80s' for me. That is why I find it dated.

We all seem to be all over the place about what constitutes a good Glenn Frey video!

I should be getting ready for work, but I had to reply to Dreamer's comments about the POMPOY video, because I totally disagree. It is a soundtrack video, so for me there are some warm fuzzies associated with the movie - not the song. But let's pretend it's not a movie, just some actors hired to be in Glenn's video, just like his other videos. You can easily associate what he's singing with what's showing in the video. Two friends can't stand the mundaneness of their lives anymore, take a trip together, run into trouble, break the law and flee from the police, all the while forming a bond that for them, nothing can break. When Glenn is singing You're a part of me, I am part of you, I totally get this deep freindship between these two women. At 3:10 it even emphasizes how much they have begun to look alike through all of their adventures. I am not saying that this is my favorite of Glenn's videos, just that it doesn't deserve less because it's a soundtrack video.

BTW, it doesn't matter to me how much it shows Glenn in the video (ducking and running)!

PM – I did consider what you are saying when I wrote my earlier post, but I guess this is another one of those times where people just have different perceptions. Honestly, if I hadn’t already seen the movie, then most of the clips used in the video would be rendered rather useless in helping me understand the relationship of the song to the movie’s plot – but maybe that’s just me. I can be rather dense at times, ya know.

And FP – again – different strokes for different folks, but I just don’t see much in the Livin’ Right video that particularly dates it to the 80’s - maybe a few minor, subtle things, but nothing of great significance. I mean there isn’t even a lot of ‘80’s big hair  But the bottom line is that even if it is dated, that isn’t really a factor for me if it is a good video otherwise. However, as we always say, each of us has our own reasons for voting the way we do, so in the big scheme of things, it really isn't important.

Yes, we do seem to be all over the place! Here's my criteria:

- Is what they do interesting (ie, not just standing there singing)?

- Is there a good "plot"? (What can I say, I love "story videos"!)

- Are there unique things about it that set it apart from other videos? This can be anything from the nature of the "plot" to the set design to the use of visuals to the use of symbolism (and more!)

- In the case of soundtracks, is the singer/band (who here happens to be Glenn Frey ;) ) shown more than a few times? It doesn't have to be the whole video, but it makes me feel like the song is more than a trailer for a movie if he gets more screen time than the movie clips.

But here's the biggie, and the one that can make or break the deal:

Do I enjoy watching it?

And in the end, that's what'll be the "best" one for me - the one I most enjoy watching.

I have a soft spot for 'Sexy Girl'. It brings me back to 1984 and the relative infancy of MTV (Well in Ireland anyway). On Sunday afternoons we (My sister and I) used to sit through 4 hours of a programme from the States called MTUSA hosted by the great and now late Vincent Hanley.

For some reason one video from this has ALWAYS stood out from that show for me, and when I think about watching it 25 years later I always think first of 'Sexy Girl' Dunno why (Must be the uber hot male lead got to me even then!) I also remember my sister used tease me that I wouldn't go to the shop with her to buy candy (I nearly wrote 'Cindy') until after SG had aired.

So I CAN'T vote it off just yet!

I cast my vote once again for 'Livin Right'.

Re: POMPOY...

There are things I absolutely love about this video. (I went and fetched some illustrations from my Part of Me, Part of You screenshot page (http://www.glennfreyonline.com/solo/moviestv/pompoycaps.htm)).

1) It was a magnificent idea to have the lyrics of the song in beautiful script projected behind him on what looks to be glass in front of sheets. Sometimes the reflection of these lyrics even fall across his face. It draws attention to the meaning of the song in a lovely, subtle yet visually sophisticated way and I LOVE it.

http://www.glennfreyonline.com/images/pompoy17.jpg

2) Similarly, there is a part of the video filmed in an interior of the warehouse (?) where the camera pans across lyric sheets pinned to a clothesline, with Glenn sitting behind them a little to the side next to his guitar looking contemplative. It only lasts a few seconds (it starts at 1:50) but it struck me so much I think of those seconds even now as a highlight of the video. How I wish they had focused on this more! A few seconds is not enough!

http://www.glennfreyonline.com/images/pompoy14.jpg
http://www.glennfreyonline.com/images/pompoy15.jpg

3) The shot at the end where Glenn walks away, completely overlaid by the lyrics so it's like he's walking through them. (You probably see a theme here, lol).
http://www.glennfreyonline.com/images/pompoy36.jpg

4) He actually IS the focus of the video, I believe, despite the integration of the clips. He is shown FAR more here than in The Heat Is On video, and there is much more going on with his shots in this video.

5) Oh my gosh, he looks so good.

But there are problems, too.

1) I think it would be hard for people unfamiliar with the movie to understand what's going on in those clips.

2) Why so dark? Who decided it was a good idea to make some shots so dark that there are times when you can barely make out his facial expressions?

3) Which editor decided it would be a good idea to stick a shot of Geena Davis's character being grabbed by a would-be rapist after Glenn sings "You and I will always be together"??? That bothers me every time I watch this video.

While there are a lot of positives here, those last two really interfere with my enjoyment of the video.

I haven't decided yet if I'm going to vote for it this round.

Good points, Soda and I also agree with you about the main criteria being how much you enjoy watching the video.

Well, it may be time to try to form a coalition for those who want to save Livin' Right. I'm not saying it's one of Glenn's best videos, but for me, it is entertaining and fun to watch. So, on to the matter at hand - based on previous rounds, it seems that the song that has the best chance at elimination this round is Some Kind of Blue. So, for those of you waiting to vote, if you want to save Livin' Right, your best chance at forming a coalition is to vote for Some Kind of Blue.

Dreamer, I agree with you about both "Livin' Right" & "Some King of Blue". Something about the SKOB video bothers me. I guess it's the girl & the alligator. It certainly isn't Glenn! However, LR is one that I keep going back to and enjoy watching. I see it as light hearted look at the fitness scene in the 80's. Glenn's hotness doesn't hurt either!

Sorry I missed the last vote. The Internet went down just as I was submitting my vote for THIO, so I guess it didn't matter anyway.

When I reviewed these videos I wrote down notes and for SKOB I wrote "ok". That's it. I couldn't think of anything else that struck me about it. I also wrote that I prefer the videos with Glenn doing some kind of acting in them. I want more Glenn than anyone else. As much as I love the song POMPOY, the video is not that great, imo.

3) Which editor decided it would be a good idea to stick a shot of Geena Davis's character being grabbed by a would-be rapist after Glenn sings "You and I will always be together"??? That bothers me every time I watch this video.

I appreciated all of your points, but I don't see this one that way. I think that through most of the song he is singing about the relationship between Thelma and Louise. Just after the shot of Thelma and her rapist, and just after Louise has shot him, Glenn sings, " From this day on you'll never walk alone." I think that line and the line that you quoted, "You and I will always be together", are meant for the female lead characters. In other words, "Look what we've done, now we're in it for the long haul."

Anyway, the video is interesting enough to be having this conversation so it can't be all bad!

Back to the vote. Not necessarily to save Livin' Right, because I don't like it either, I once again cast my vote for Some Kind Of Blue.

I'm enjoying all these discussions. I have to agree there are not enough shots of Glenn in the POMPOY video, but in the ones there are, he looks smokin'. I love this cap of Glenn on the open road on a flat bed truck.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c96/Glenneaglesfan/Glenn/pompoy01.jpg

Livin' Right was going to be my choice - I find it a bit cheesy, particularly when he is dancing with all those girls (sorry, Cindy!), but then I remembered the shot of him shooting the hoop and that tantalising glimpse...

So I'm going to cast my vote for Some Kind Of Blue again.

Funny you should ask PM because I just went and watched it again and was getting ready to edit my last post to let you know.

1) I think you have to have a great song to have a great video-JMHO, and I think this is a good song to start with.

2)LOVE the way the video goes back and forth, screenshot of Glenn, screen shot of horn, video of girl, screen shot of drummer, screen shot of backup singers, etc....

3) I like the black and white and darkness/low lighting of the video...mood lighting if you will, hence I think it goes along with the song Some Kind Of Blue. He's upset about the breakup and feeling low and down...feeling blue.

4) I don't understand why a lot of you have mentioned the alligator. It appears 3 times for a grand total of less than 10 seconds in a video that is 4:45 minutes long. He's flashing back to memories and watching videos of her, whatever... my point is, it happens to be a happy memory for him of a time they apparently spent at a zoo, wildlife preserve, swamp, whatever it was.

BONUS---The background singers (one in particular:heart:). Just kidding!

Maybe I'm not putting enough emphasis on the videos themselves and to much on the song/music. But like I said, a video to me is visual and audio--tho I have been known to mute a video just to watch it (Alan Jackson for example--use to love looking at him but hate that country stuff-ducking and running again!)

Now can some of you tell me what's so awful about it because I'm dense and don't get it.

sodascouts
09-02-2009, 10:15 AM
I like the Some Kind of Blue video, too - and it's not just because Glenn looks magnificent.

He puts his acting talent to good use here, conveying so much with just his expressions. You can feel his pain.

I don't get the alligator hate either - she's just playing around and being silly. They're having a good time together.

The 8 mm film is a great way to demonstrate the past, and the current shots of the woman looking sad are an effective contrast (although I wish they'd spent enough money to give her a little more to work with). Yes, it's low budget and there's not a lot going on when it comes to Glenn - he's basically just sitting there. Plus, it kind of tapers off at the end. However, I still like it!

When I watch the video, I feel sad for them. "Aw, don't take your wedding ring off! Give the marriage another try!" lol If they can sell it to the point where I feel bad for them despite the fact that it's not a real situation, the video does what it needs to do.

Willie, it's not that I don't like Some Kind of Blue, but it's just not my favorite. I actually like all of these videos including Love In the 21st Century, but, I like some better than others, of course. My favorite Glenn videos are the ones that showcase his acting skills because I think they set his videos apart from some other artists. As you know, not all singers are good actors, so I really enjoy watching Glenn use his 'other' talent. Believe it or not, this is why I like to see him featured in the videos - not just because he is so hot. In general, the more the singer is involved in the action, the more I like the video. The slow tempo of the song along with the slow moving action where Glenn is featured more as a singer rather than an actor just doesn't make it as interesting for me.

(Now that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.)

I'll just add my 2 cents. I may be the opposite of Dreamer in that in a video I want to see Glenn doing what he does best (although I suppose my favourites do involve 'acting'). He looks ridiculously handsome in this one (SKOB) and I sigh when I look at it.

I understand and appreciate the social commentary, and I get the message (it's not exactly subtle), but the Glenn parts are very bland and there's something about this video that's always bothered me. Almost all the shots of arrogant, uncaring rich people are shots of women. Perhaps I'm being hypersensitive, but what can I say, it's something I noticed and I don't like it.

A couple of things about Sexy Girl,

At the beginning of the video there are two empty longnecks on top of the piano. Glenn goes to the fridge and twists the top off of a shortneck. Next thing you see is Glenn back at the piano. Now there are four longnecks, two cans of soda and a cup of something (which he partakes of) on the piano. Obviously we are supposed to assume the passage of time and hence the writer's block. But what happened to the shortneck bottle? Did he suddenly decide to be tidy and throw that one empty in the trash? I know it's a little thing but I noticed it!
Anyway, the more I watch Sexy Girl the cuter it gets. And there's just something about the end where the camera pans out to show the devastation the Sexy Girl has caused the neighborhood! The convertible is being towed away and the man and wife are arguing in front of the cop, etc...

Now for my vote. Never underestimate the power of persuasion. I am having to watch these videos over and over for the purpose of this game, having never seen most of them before. After Soda posted her views on I've Got Mine I took another look. There's not much of a story going on, which I like to see in a video, and I don't like the constant 'overblending', (for lack of the industry name for it) of one visual to another. For these reasons and others that Soda mentioned
I cast my vote for I've Got Mine.

However, I look at this video as a huge missed opportunity. While I don't think the video is awful, there are so many ways they could have done more with it to do justice to the song. I hate to use low budget as an excuse here. If you want an example of a great video that was probably made on a relatively low budget, you don't have to look any farther than The End of the Innocence. A similar story-telling approach could have been used very effectively for the I've Got Mine video to convey the song's message, IMHO.

I am withholding my vote for now to see how this round plays out.

ETA: OMG, FP - we were typing our comments at the same time. How strange that both of us thought about the EOTI video. I guess there must be something to what we say here.

So why do you like the I've Got Mine video? We would be interested to hear your reasons.

For my part I think there is too much overload of the 'message' in it. Too much information. Compare with the EOTI video where only occasional shots are needed to convey Don's opinion of the Reagan era.

At least The scenery was very real and portrayed what life was like during that time

Ironically, I'm gonna stand up a bit for I've Got Mine despite the fact I'm leading the charge against it!

I don't think it's fair to compare it with End of the Innocence in terms of subtlety because the song I've Got Mine itself is not subtle, and End of the Innocence is. It's easy for a subtle song to have a subtle video.

The song I've Got Mine is not like that. The video I've Got Mine spells it out because it's a visual representation of the way the song itself spells it out. "Someone's wandering the streets tonight - no way to warm his hands" [show poor person wandering] "Someone's turning up their fireplace making travel plans" [show rich women being oblivious, contrast with poor] "His mind is on some sandy beach where the sun is gonna shine... he thinks, 'I don't have to hang around now that I've got mine'" [more shots of poor people, contrasted with more shots of rich women despite gender of lyrics but ANYWAY...]

So, yes, the video for IGM was simplistically done and certainly could have been handled better.

But even the EOTI video had that to a degree: "So lay your head back on the ground, and let your hair fall all around me" [show couple in the grass]. That said, I love the sophisticated way EOTI's video communicates its message in other ways - for instance, the soldier's head being shorn over those same lyrics later. It definitely is a superior video by far.

However, it doesn't have any lyrics that say, for instance, "Since Reagan had to lie" so when they show the image of Reagan, you think it's a subtle reference. In actuality, I don't think it's terribly subtle to show an image of Reagan as the lyrics "this tired old man who we elected king" play! It basically says "Just in case you didn't get it, THIS is who I'm referring to."

In spite of all that, though, as I've said earlier, Glenn's camp could've done better. I agree with a more sophisticated story-approach, like Dreamer and FP said. I still think you should vote for it to go. ;)

P.S. No way was EOTI low budget. The multiple sets and props alone, some of them specially designed to look 'retro' as opposed to being able to film as is, must have cost tens of thousands. Is it extravagantly budgeted? No, it's pretty much middle of the road, I think... and they sure made the most of that money. The video is magnificent. But it's not low budget.

Wow Soda – I can’t speak for FP, but speaking for myself, I would have to say …girl, if you were responding to my earlier post, then you waaayyyy overanalyzed my comments. I was never intending to draw any comparison between the two songs beyond the fact that they are both social commentaries. I was merely trying to say that I think the I’ve Got Mine video could have been much more effective if they had followed the EOTI story-telling model. I don’t think they would have had to sell the farm to accomplish that either. I can’t debate the true costs of the EOTI video because, obviously, we don’t know that info. However, I did qualify my comment by saying it was “probably made on a relatively low budget”. Based on what I see in the video, I stand by that statement.

Now, on to my vote – if necessary, I would have voted to eliminate I’ve Got Mine. But, since it won’t need my vote, I’m going to cast a strategic vote that is gonna make Soda cringe  …

I cast my vote for Smuggler’s Blues.

Well - it's not looking good for Livin' Right this round. But, I thought I'd put in a plug for I Found Somebody. Oh man – I love that video. I think the way the story depicted in the video fits with the song is very clever. On the surface, when I listen to the song’s lyrics, it seems as if Glenn has finally met his soul mate. However, upon reflecting deeper, I always thought the song portrayed the 70's and '80's fickle trend of falling in and out of love so easily. When I saw the video, I said a big “YES” because that's exactly what the video says to me. She’s no soul mate – just a pickup in a bar that probably will turn out to be another disappointing one night stand! Whenever, a video can reveal a meaning to a song that the listener may not ordinarily get by just casually listening to it, then the video gets a big  as far as I’m concerned.

That is an extra dimension to the song/video that never occurred to me. I always thought it was a straightforward love song except that in the first verse I thought he may have been making disguised allusions to the Eagles' breakup.

There are similarities to the Johnny Can't Read video here:

They are both wearing the clothes they wear on their respective album covers. Also, it's the first solo video for them both and it seems to me neither of them are finding it easy to adjust to their new roles. Try as he might, Glenn does not convince me during the 'pick up' scene, especially when you clearly see him mouth 'my name's Glenn Frey'. I wish he hadn't included all this and just showed himself singing in the club. But perhaps he didn't feel confident enough as a solo artist yet to do that (in fact the only other 'performance' video is True Love).

sodascouts
09-07-2009, 07:44 PM
Re: I Found Somebody... I can understand the idea of the video adding another aspect to the song, but I don't think the lyrics really bear up the "one night stand" idea - unless you think he's being sarcastic or delusional.

I think they chose that route for the video because it was funny.

However, I am glad there was a "plot" to it. I think it would have been pretty dull if he'd just been on stage singing the whole time. Honestly, I think True Love suffers because of that. And I have to admit, I find the "Hi, I'm Glenn Frey" part very cute! (Although I would have probably just said "Hi, I'm Nancy" instead of giving my full name, lol).

Hmm, why is it I always wind up defending the ones I want voted off?? Because they're all good, I guess! And something's gotta go...

So, for reasons stated earlier, I think I Found Somebody should be the next one to go down.

We will have to disagree there, because I see nothing wrong with a video which features the performer actually performing. Call me old fashioned or whatever. I regard such videos as a blessed relief from some which had endless, overloaded, obscure symbolism.

I seem to lean towards Brooke's thoughts here. I don't feel strongly one way or another for some of these videos in the middle of my list. However, the discussions are helping because when something is pointed out it makes me review the video again!

Now as for IFS, until Dreamer posted her view of the song being about "the 70's and 80's fickle trend of falling in and out of love so easily" I never would have considered that. I thought Glenn was being sincere! So when at the end of the video he looks at another woman (when he's not even out the door with the first) I'm thinking, "You bastard!" :steviesmack::lol:
I'm not convinced of Dreamer's theory, but the video certainly makes more sense if it's true. I do like the way they have Glenn being in two places at once - clever!

This is hard! I guess I'll vote for Livin' Right, because although it tells a good story and I love the scene where he's caught hiding in the locker eating fries, I hate the way the sweat suit makes him look fat and dumpy (I know, I know, it's for the purpose of the story progession.) The way he runs around the track in that dumpy suit makes me cringe. He does look great at the end, but...

I've had a busy weekend and missed the last round, but am baa aaaack!

Pm, you exactly summed up my thoughts about IFS here.

lol! Good point. "Hey, babe, I'm Glenn Frey... and just in case you didn't notice, that's MY name on that marquee out there... you know, right beside the words SOLD OUT. Obviously, I'm awesome. Feel free to throw yourself at me." ;)

Perfect, Soda!

And, I voted for IFS a couple rounds back and got sidetracked. Glenn looks fantastic, but it really bugs me the way he sings with his eyes closed while sitting at the bar here. And the whole song suggests that he did, indeed, find somebody, but contradicts itself at the end when he checks out the girl on his way out with his pick up.

For these reasons, I vote for I Found Somebody. Not that it will matter at this point!

Oh no – I didn’t mean to make anyone hate on the I Found Somebody video. I’m gonna make a few more comments about it to try to clarify my earlier post. I sure don’t think that the songs lyrics specifically talk about picking up a girl in a bar after a brief encounter, which is what happens in the video. (And if you are in any doubt about that, what about the last scene that PM and Brooke mention where he turns around to check out the other girl as if thinking “hmmm – maybe I love her better”.) Sorry, but to me, that is not the action of someone who has just fallen head over heals in love. However, as the video so effectively indicates, the song can be interpreted in more than one way. Now, I acknowledge that I’m coming at this from the somewhat jaded perspective of a child of the ‘70’s that some of you … err … ‘younger’ folks may not relate to. When I listen to the lyrics in the first verse, I envision a guy who just left one bad relationship and is now jumping right into another. Later in the song, he talks about all the deception he’s seen, which is typical of these kinds of ‘relationships’. I’m not saying that this makes Glenn’s character horrible – as a matter of fact, I think he may be truly trying to find the right girl, but is a bit ‘misguided’ in how he is going about it. This is a pretty typical mentality for someone trying to justify “lookin’ for love in all the wrong places” to themselves. Maybe it’s one of those things where you had to be there to really understand it. As a matter of fact, as I go back and reread this post, I’m not sure that I clarified anything for anyone except myself. :-? :)

As for voting, I will continue with my strategy ...

I cast my vote for Smuggler's Blues.

However, regarding True Love - I gotta tell you, I'm voting for that sucker the first chance I get. I know you love that video, but personally, I agree with Soda here - I just don't think it's that great. Hmm, shaping up to be a showdown between I Found Somebody and Sexy Girl.

Another point in favor of Sexy Girl is how funny it is. I love how after Glenn sees Sexy Girl coming down the street for the first time, he runs to look in the mirror, combs his hair, puts on his sunglasses, and tries to look his best when he goes to the mailbox in front of her. "Oh yeah, I'm just nonchalantly getting my mail... didn't even notice you were there... " LOL!

Check out this animation of the sunglasses part - it's such a hoot!
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/glennfreyonline/avatars/aviesexyshades.gif

And I love how later, after he's helped her pick up her paper towels, he's so sure she thinks he's hot stuff and wants his bod - "Oh yeah, she so wants me - time to give her a taste of the Sugar!!" He gets all ready...

Let's watch the stampede towards True Love...!

In defence of this video Glenn looks superb in it. I can't help it. For once he isn't playing guitar and I just love it when for the only time in his career he gets to grab the mic stand and swing it around. All the stuff with the kids at the start and then the girl gazing up at him is corny, I suppose, but the atmosphere in the club with the people dancing is great to watch.

Anyway.... I can now happily vote for Sexy Girl.

FP, I think you did the right thing by allowing True Love to be voted upon since we all knew it wasn't going to win and you were only delaying its demise!

As far as which video to vote for...

I've already explained why I like Sexy Girl. While True Love is a good video, I think it's inferior in many ways.

1) The "plot" is lame (IMHO). Annoying kids drive to bar. Two annoying kids get drunk. One annoying kid (the girl) gets fascinated by Glenn and watches him, until the climactic moment where she is pulled onstage. Meanwhile all Glenn is doing is standing there singing. Not exactly exciting. And did I mention those kids were annoying? lol

2) Many of the shots are unflattering of Glenn. They seem to like to film up his nose.

http://www.glennfreyonline.com/images/tl11.jpg

http://www.glennfreyonline.com/images/tl17.jpg

3) The suit. Some may think it's slammin' - I don't think it does anything for him.

I gotta agree that it's time for True Love to go now that it is not immune. I like the video, especially the dancing, but it is far from Glenn's best, IMO. First of all, Dreamer - :fingerwag:
Actually, I'm still not sure which video I want to win. I'll probably change my mind ten times before now and then!

I gotta disagree with Soda on True Love. I don't find the teens annoying. I like the whole idea of the speakeasy kind of thing, and the kids being let in. I like that the video is shot in black and white, I like the whole dirty dancing thing going on, and I gotta tell you, I agree with FP - Glenn looks great onstage with just the mic. And some of you may think it's cheesy, but I think the girl does an excellent job of portraying absolute obsession for Glenn. The actress has obviously been told not to take her eyes off of Glenn and she doesn't! :hilarious:

I'll hold off on voting for now.

Glennsallnighter
09-11-2009, 05:37 PM
So its an obvious choice here between 'TL' and 'SG' As a song I would probably prefer TL as its very upbeat and very 80s, which was my era in music. But I don't think the video gives it a lot of justice. And as I say the video to 'SG' holds a lot of memories for me. Not least because it was when I saw Glenn as a person for the first time. It was a tight decision, but I think I'll cast my vote this round for 'True Love'

glenneaglesfan

I don't think anyone has stated they 'hate' the Sexy Girl video, EL. I remember you also made this comment in the Henley game when Last Worthless Evening was about to be voted off and people had to reassure you they did not 'hate' the video, but preferred others.

Sexy Girl, for the record, is fun to watch and is the sort of video that actually seems to have improved with age. But it has had a pretty good run in this game. It doesn't really stand comparisons with the remaining videos.

And PM, I completely endorse your sentiments on the True Love video.

Hmmmm, I'm surprised at all the votes for YBTTC. I really like it.

And I still like SG better than The One You Love, even though Glenn looks gorgeous in it. But doesn't he in most all of them?!

I vote for The One You Love.

I think the votes for YBTTC are strategic. I was gonna vote strategic too - until I saw how YBTTC might be voted off before Sexy Girl. Unacceptable!

I cast my vote for Sexy Girl.

Sexy Girl, easily. As I once said during the Solo Collection Survivor - it is 'holding onto a dream' if it thinks it can win!

I'm not convinced all those votes are strategic! :fear:

I'm counting on Sexy Girl going without my help, therefore

I cast my vote for River Of Dreams.

Hmmm – I'm not sure whether the votes for You Belong To the City are strategic or not, but it looks like it may be time for me to start making my case for it. IMO, this is an absolutely incredible video. There are many things I love about the video, but I think the thing that most attracts me is how effectively the sense of motion in the video captures the perpetual pace of city life. As Soda mentioned earlier, the way that the Miami Vice clips are interspersed throughout is also really well done. I love the way the story of life in the city is told using the constant motion and the one night stand. The message I take away from this depiction is that even with all the hoards of activity and people everywhere, life can still be empty and lonely - perfectly portrayed in the final scene as Glenn prepares to walk back out into the busy streets alone after the one night stand.

Its looks like it is safe for now, so I'll continue to vote strategically ...

I cast my vote for The One You Love.

The tribe has spoken and the next video to be eliminated in the "Glenn Frey Music Videos” Survivor is Sexy Girl. “Sexy Girl”, it looks as if you were indeed holding on to a dream. But the dream is over and you must please leave the island immediately. The remaining videos may return to camp.

In which video does Glenn have a note in his lunch box?

ETA: The One You Love is immune.

Sorry everyone if you were trying to answer the immunity question because it did not make sense. I have revised it so it is clearer. Having major pc issues this evening which you may be able to tell. I'll try to get everything straight shortly.

I like all the videos remaining. They are all great songs. I love Smuggler's Blues, it has an awesome video. I just don't think there isn't much of a story to:You Belong To The City even though i love the song.

So i vote for: You Belong To The City

PS Thank you for the Happy Birthday Wishes

Geesh---Finally I get to vote for something different!

This is getting increasingly more difficult.

My vote goes to Soul Searchin but that was not an easy decision to make.

It's very appropriate that Smugglers Blues just came on the radio here at work!

One thing I aimed to mention about Sexy Girl was could Glenn's sunglasses have gotten any bigger?! Don't hide that gorgeous face, Sugar!

Anyway, now I have to vote for Soul Searchin'. Good video, great song, but Glenn looks too sad and it's not as good as the remainder. Except for The One You Love. :argue:
