1970 Creedence Clearwater Revival scored their first UK No.1 album with 'Cosmo's Factory'. It enjoyed a nine-week run at No.1 in the US where it sold over three million copies.
　
　1975 Wish You Were Here,' Pink Floyd's long-awaited followup to 'Dark Side of the Moon,' is released. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," a side-long epic about their troubled ex-leader Syd Barrett, is its centerpiece.

1987 Michael Jackson kicked of his Bad World Tour by playing the first of three sold-out nights at Korakuen Stadium in Tokyo, Japan. By the end of the 123-date tour, Jackson had played to over 4million fans across fifteen countries.

1990 Could this be the end of Fleetwood Mac? Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie both think so, as they announce they will no longer sing with the soft rockers. The band reunited at President Clinton’s inauguration in 1993.

2003 Johnny Cash passes away.

2003 The Beatles sue Apple computers, alleging their iTunes store infringes copyrights on the logo of their Apple Corps record label.

2007the surviving members of Led Zeppelin announced they would reform for a star-studded tribute concert in London. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones would play at a show to remember the late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. The place of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, who died in 1980, would be taken by his son Jason. The one-off concert, the trio's first performance for 19 years, would take place at the O2 arena in London on 26th November with tickets costing £125. All profits from the show would go towards scholarships in Ertegun's name in UK, the USA and Turkey, the country of his birth.

1963 Graham Nash fell out of The Hollies van after a gig in Scotland. Nash checked to see if the door was locked, it wasn't and he fell out as it travelled at 40 m.p.h.

1969 John and Yoko flew to Canada with the Plastic Ono Band to perform at the Rock & Roll Revival Show in Toronto, Canada, featuring Eric Clapton on guitar.Klaus Voormann and drummer Alan White were put together so late that they had to rehearse on the plane from England. Also making an appearance at the concert were Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Bo Diddley, The Doors and Alice Cooper. Lennon later released his performance as the Live Peace in Toronto 1969 album.

1980 Jackson Browne scored his only US No.1 album with 'Hold Out'.

1985 MTV presents the second annual "MTV Video Music Awards" from Radio City Music Hall. The host is Eddie Murphy and Video of the Year goes to Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer (he won total 4 prizes) . "Best Concept Video: Smuggler‘s Blues by Glenn Frey.

2000 Elton John threw a tantrum when he was set to appear at a sell-out show at the Estoril Casino near Lisbon. Elton was unhappy after the audience were slow in leaving a VIP dinner before the concert, Elton left the building and flew home on his private jet without playing a note.

1968 Roy Orbison's house in Nashville burnt down, his two eldest sons both died in the blaze. Orbison was on tour in the UK at the time of the accident.

1974 Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Joni Mitchell, The Band, Jesse Colin Young and Joe Walsh all appeared at Wembley Stadium, London, England.

1979 The film Quadrophenia was released. Based on The Who’s 1973 rock opera the film featured Phil Daniels, Toyah Willcox, Ray Winstone, Michael Elphick and Sting.

So sad. Crazy to think it's been two years. Rick always seemed like such a sweet, gentle guy, and he was an integral (but probably underrated) part of Pink Floyd. He had a great voice and harmonised perfectly with David Gilmour. 'Echoes' is a prime example of how good they sounded together.

1996 a bomb was found at a South London sorting office addressed to Icelandic singer Bjork. Police in Miami had alerted the post office after finding the body of Ricardo Lopez who had made a video of himself making the bomb and then killing himself.

1973 country rock singer, songwriter 26-year-old Gram Parsons, formerly of The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers, died under mysterious conditions in Joshua Tree, California. His death was attributed to heart failure but later was officially announced as a drug overdose. His coffin was stolen by two of his associates, manager Phil Kaufman and Michael Martin, a former roadie for The Byrds, and was taken to Cap Rock in the California desert, where it was set alight, in accordance to Parson's wishes. The two were later arrested by police.

2004 Canadian singer Celine Dion extended her Las Vegas show for another year. Dion was reportedly being paid $100m (£66m) for the original three-year run of five 90-minute concerts a week.

1969 Blind Faith started a two-week run at No.1 on the UK chart with their self-titled debut album. The only release from the Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker & Rick Grech line-up also reached No.1 in the US. The only UK gig was in Hyde Park, London on 7th Jun 1969.

1969 UK music paper Melody Maker readers poll results were published. Winners included Eric Clapton who won best musician, Bob Dylan best male singer and best album for 'Nashville Skyline'. Best group went to The Beatles, Best single went to Simon and Garfunkel for 'The Boxer' and Janis Joplin won Best female singer.

1970 Jim Morrison of The Doors was acquitted on charges of lewd and lascivious behavior, but was found guilty of exposing himself during a concert at The Dinner Key Auditorium in Coconut Grove a year and a half earlier. At his trial at the Dade County Courthouse in Miami, Judge Goodman sentenced Morrison to six months hard labor and a $500 (£270), fine for public exposure and sixty days hard labor for profanity. The sentence was appealed, but Morrison was never brought to trial, as he would die in Paris France on July 3, 1971.

1980 Bob Marley collapsed on stage during a concert at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Marley had collapsed in New York's Central Park while jogging, two days before and was told to immediately cancel the US leg, but flew to Pittsburgh to perform one final performance. This was the last time Marley ever appeared on stage performing, Marley died of cancer on in May 1981.

1997 Elektra Entertainment releases “The Next Voice You Hear: The Best of Jackson Browne,” the first-ever anthology of the singer/songwriter’s work.

2001 Kylie Minogue started a five-week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head.' The Australian singers 6th No.1 was It was written and produced by Cathy Dennis and former Mud guitarist Rob Davis for which the pair won an Ivor Novello Award for the most performed song of the year. 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' charted at No.1 in 40 countries.

2006 Neil Young was named artist of the year at the Americana Honors and Awards at the fifth annual event in Nashville, Tennessee. The 60-year-old singer-songwriter released the protest album Living With War this year.

1993 After suing for wrongful dismissal, Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Adler collects a $2.5 million settlement from the band. He alleged that his bandmates threw him out of the group for his heroin habit, after encouraging him to take the drug in the first place.

1994 Eric Clapton is tonight's special musical guest on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live.

2000 Mariah Carey started a two-week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with their version of the Phil Collins 1984 hit 'Against All Odds.'

1971 Cat Stevens releases his single “Peace Train.” The song was later covered by 10,000 Maniacs, who pulled the tune from 1987's In My Tribe after Stevens declared his support for the fatwa against Salman Rushdie.

1980 John Bonham, drummer with Led Zeppelin, died aged 32 after a heavy drinking session. ‘Bonzo’ was found dead at guitarist's Jimmy Page's house of what was described as asphyxiation, after inhaling his own vomit after excessive vodka consumption, (40 shots in 4 hours). During live sets his drum solo, ‘Moby Dick,’ would often last for half an hour and regularly featured his use of his bare hands. In 2007, Ludwig issued a limited edition drum kit in Bonham's memory.

1982, Queen made a guest appearance on US TV's Saturday Night Live, where they performed ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ and ‘Under Pressure’.

1992 Two fans were stabbed and 20 arrests were made after trouble broke out at a Ozzy Osbourne gig in Oklahoma City. The sale of alcohol at the concert was blamed for the incident.

2001 'Invincible,' Michael Jackson's first album in four years, is released. Featured guests include Carlos Santana, Will Smith and Missy Elliott.

2003 Actor and occasional rocker Bruce Willis plays a show with his band the Accelerator for American troops in Northern Iraq.

1965 At the end of a European tour Roger Daltry knocked out Keith Moon and was sacked from The Who. The band were playing two shows in one night in Denmark, when an argument broke about between all four band members. Daltry was reinstated the following day.

1969 The Beatles released 'Abbey Road' in the UK, the final studio recordings from the group featured two George Harrison songs 'Something' and 'Here Comes The Sun' plus 'Come Together', 'Sun King' and 'Golden Slumbers.'

1978 Eric Clapton sponsored a West Bromwich Albion UEFA cup-tie against Galatasarey of Turkey. After the game, Eric presented each player with a gold copy of his latest album 'Slowhand''.

1980 David Bowie scored his fourth UK No.1 album with 'Scary Monsters And Supercreeps'.

1986 Metallica bass player Cliff Burton was crushed to death after the bands tour bus crashed between Stockholm and Copenhagen. During a European tour members from the band drew cards for the most comfortable bunk on the tour bus, Burton had won the game with an Ace of Spades and was asleep when the tour bus ran over a patch of black ice and skidded off of the road. He was thrown through the window of the bus, which fell on top of him.

2008 Pink Floyd’s manager Bryan Morrison died after spending over two years in a coma. Morrison suffered severe brain injuries in a polo accident at the Royal Berkshire Polo Club, England in 2006, and never recovered. He also managed The Pretty Things and was a music publisher for Syd Barrett, The Bee Gees, Elton John, The Jam, T-Rex and Wham!

2004 In a Los Angeles Times editorial, Yusuf Islam blasts the United States’ system of screening airline passengers of potential terrorists as “indiscriminate” and “unjust.” The artist formerly known as Cat Stevens was barred from entering the United States the previous week because his named appeared on a government security watch list.

According to what I've read (I THINK it was in the book "Backstage Pass" by Joe Vitale but I wouldn't swear to it), it was not uncommon for bands to turn the show over to the drummer for a long drum solo about halfway through the gig. Often the other band members would leave the stage and either go backstage or even under the stage during the solo to "freshen up"...3E style. The drummer usually didn't mind....they are usually the most unknown member in the band and jumped at the chance to be in the spotlight.

Cream is a story in its own right. Baker and Bruce pretty much hated each other and the feud between them fuel the energy of their performances with each trying to outdo each other. Clapton was pretty much passive aggressive and kept the fires stirred up. It's amazing they stayed together as long as they did!

Oh yeah, I remember the Paul Is Dead phase well. I was familiar with the Abby Road cover clues, along with clues on the Sgt. Pepper cover and the Magical Mystery Tour album. I also remember that at the end of some song (can't remember which one) during the fade out you could hear John say, "I buried Paul." Later it was noted somewhere that what he is actually saying is, "I'm very bored."

I remember an interview with him talking about this. I believe it might have been the same interview where I said to myself, "OMG, he's looking 'different'". In other words, it was the first time the white hair just struck me and I realized my guitar God of the 70's wasn't the same anymore. Not that I really cared tho.

I remember this so well. Our music teacher in 8th grade had a day each month that we could bring in an album to share. This is the one I took. A lot of the kids looked at me a bit weirder after that! :hilarious: How can anyone not love Bohemian Rhapsody and the video is spectacular.

I remember at the time there was some criticism that the performers had "sold out" by playing a party for a defense contractor with a rather murky reputation, to say the least (he recently was found guilty of fraud and embezzlement, among other offenses (http://newyork.fbi.gov/dojpressrel/pressrel10/nyfo091410.htm), with accusations that some of the embezzled funds were used to pay for this $10 million party).

At the time, Henley attempted to deflect criticism by issuing a statement that all of his earnings from playing the party were going to Walden Woods (http://soundcheck.ocregister.com/2005/12/12/an-update-a-correction/516/). Joe and Stevie just kept mum, and if I recall correctly, little was said about it in the Eagles fan community. On the Fleetwood Mac boards, though, there was a lot of controversy about it - the thread on an FM board called The Ledge reached 32 pages (http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showthread.php?t=24243&page=3). (For some reason, Mac fans seem to be a lot more vocal about such things.)

Tommy Bolin died at the age of 25. He would have been 49 years young. The virtuoso guitarist died of a heroin overdose.

Tommy may be best known for his work with Deep Purple, but for me his BEST work will always be that done as Joe Walsh's replacement in the James Gang. "Bang" is one of the best albums that the James Gang released and I am not excluding the classics that Joe led the Gang in. "Miami" also featured Tommy before he moved on.

The James Gang had a hard time coming up with someone who could fill the gap that Joe Walsh left empty when he moved on to a solo career. Bolin came close to doing just that. Die Hard James Gang fans often over emphasize the creativity achieved both before and after Walsh, but it is my opinion that only with Bolin did they come close!

Give songs like "Alexis" and "Standing In The Rain". When Fox and Peters asked Joe about Tommy, Joe told them that they would be absolutely foolish not to bring him on. He brought much needed talents as a lyricist as well as composer and instrumentalist.

They just didn't want to as far as I know. When they started the era of the 'singles band' was over & the 'album band' era had kicked in. Let's face it, none of their songs are exactly Top 40 material, are they, not even their ballads.

That is strange that Led Zeppelin didn't release singles in the UK. I'm not surprised about them only having 6 Top 40 hits though. I know I can't name more than one song by them, although perhaps I'm not representative as they were a bit before my time. I can say that what I have heard of them doesn't sound like hit material to me. They were played a lot on "Eagles Radio" and I noticed that the Led Zeppelin songs played seemed to have an odd quasi-"psychedelic" flavor and weren't very melodic. I can't even remember what the songs were - I just remember thinking that the songs seemed kind of meandering in structure and sounded dissonant at times. That kind of stuff isn't gonna be top 40. I'm not trying to diss them; obviously a lot of folks are into that kind of sound (including a lot of our discerning board members ;) ). However, it seems to be an acquired taste; it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

I'll take a stab at that Willie. From personal perspective and from that of the folks I hung with in the 70's, we sort of turned up our noses at the Top 40. We were mostly into Underground music. We took pride in recognizing brilliance that the "masses" didn't see. Things other than the 3-minute song with 30 seconds of guitar solo. You know, the "radio friendly" songs. Zep wasn't very "radio friendly" with their often long songs like Stairway and Battle Of Evermore.

Me, well, I was even further out of the norm than those I hung out with in that I was really into Blues at the time.

But I did always think that "Going to California" "should have been" a Top 40 Hit.

I'm sure you're onto something there. I honestly have been racking my brain trying to remember when I was introduced to Zep and can't remember, only that I was very young apparently because it seems as if I've ALWAYS been a fan. It sure wasn't from "hanging" with anyone at that early age so I can only assume it was from listening to the radio or one of my much older cousins who use to influence me a lot when it came to music.

As far as songs such as Going To California that should have been hits? I can think of at least a dozen off the top of my head that I feel could be Top 40 material. I respectfully disagree that none of their material was top 40 material.

Now I'm off to see if I can find which 6 songs were the only ones to hit the top 40 chart. Unless someone knows that off the top of their head.

Wow, Willie, I do understand, believe me, but I think Zeppelin were far better than being just a Top 40 band. It's ironic that Glenn talked about this last night. He said the Eagles weren't a Top 40 band either until TITTL.

My Mike is with Border Mike; when he was growing up in England he hated Top 40 radio, so he & his friends got into Prog Rock & Heavy Rock (including Zeppelin) by word of mouth.

But I do think Fool In The Rain is a 'Top 40' song although it's a bit long. Even something like Sick Again is fairly catchy, or Ramble On, or even Misty Mountain Hop.

I had no idea Jim Croce died so soon after the song came out! How ironic as well as tragic.

The first time I heard "Time in a Bottle" was in Driver's Ed when I was 15. They were showing us a short movie about the dangers of drinking and driving - kind of a "scare you straight" piece - a "based on a true story" film about this nice girl who was killed accidentally by a drunk driver. As they portrayed her driving towards the intersection where she would be killed, they showed her smiling and listening to "Time in a Bottle" in her car. Then, of course the big crash and she was dead. To this day, when I hear that song, I'm reminded of that girl's "death"!

I think Led Zeppelin, Stones, Who and Eagles were all three in competition to see who could raise the most hell, cause the most damage and get the most wasted back in the early 70's. Amazing they could produce such music under those circumstances!

But in this particular case, I think it was the Fans and not Zep causing the problems. And yeah, the Fans were following role models trying to raise as much hell, cause as much damage and get the most wasted as possible. The 70's were a lot more violent than the 60's (though it was getting pretty bad in the late 60's).

I think you are right Soda, but "why" I wonder? I guess it is understandable back in the Early 70's when the Eagles were into the much "softer" Country Rock. That music took a different personality/temperament to appreciate when compared to the over-the-top style of Zeppelin.

But in '75 (when Zep had that trouble in Boston), Eagles were breaking out of Country Rock and beginning to move into Rock more aggressively and by '77 with Hotel California, (and complimented by Felder and Walsh), they were more accepted by the Rock Snobs (myself included!). But with the possible exception of "Fast Lane", they really didn't get into the heavy stuff like Zep did.

But I've never heard of a riot at an Eagles concert!

I think it is just the less aggressive personalities that were drawn to Eagles. Or as you said in a single phrase "more laid back". I guess there's no mystery.

That might be when he was a kid. I was just pointing out that no one in the media since the Stones have formed have called him that and that the above WAS a typo. That's all I meant, is just pointing out a typo. I did however know his name was Michael though. But I've never heard to him referred to as Mike in the Stones history (I have more books on the Stones than Carter has pills :rofl:). But I admittedly don't know much about his childhood. Just the band's history. I know more about Richards but I know some on Jagger.

I agree. I have never heard Sir Mick referred to as Mike, ever. I would have thought if there was a typo calling him Mick early in his career & he wanted to be called Mike he would have moved heaven & earth to fix it.
