Good heavens. Thanks so much to everybody. Special thanks to Troub and TBF for posting the photos of MK and TBF for the Zep photo (Robert looks really cute there) and to EL for the Elton photo. Thanks especially to Ticky & Koala for the wonderful wallpapers (Ticky, I was wondering if you could possibly provide me with one of those fabulous stories - it doesn't have to be long). Thanks to everyone else for the photos of the other guy, whatever his name is.... :partytime:

And Nancy, thank you for those comments. It has and will continue to be a privilege to be a founding member (hey! just like Glenn - am I also a member of The Border Hall of Fame?) of this site. :steviesmack:

As far as the day went it was fairly quiet. Had a swim in my mother's pool and received the DVD of the BBC series of War & Peace, the Booker Prize winner Wolf Hall and also DVDs of Dire Straits in Sydney in 1986 (I attended that record breaking tour) and... the Eagles at Madison Square Garden last year. So stay tuned for some screen caps of that. Thanks again to everyone for their birthday wishes. :grouphug:

*********************************************

Julie sighed and folded the news paper onto the table before her. She leaned on her elbows over the now cold cup of morning coffee and allowed herself just a moment of wallowing in self pity. The Eagles had announced the next leg of their tour and Australia wasn’t on it. It didn’t look promising that they’d ever come back. She picked mindlessly at what was left of her bran muffin and finally decided she was done with her breakfast. She tossed out the remains, rinsed out her dishes, carefully loading them into the dishwasher and grabbed her car keys. Life must go on. Michael was at work, Rosalind in school and she had a day off. Well, she had a day off of work. Today was Christmas shopping. Not Julie’s favorite task, but a necessary one. Michael was easy. She’d found an old first press digital vinyl copy of Dark Side of the Moon in near mint condition on ebay and had bought it right off. She’d had it for months now. He’d be thrilled. Rosalind, on the other hand wanted the new Playstation PSP, whatever that was. UGH! Julie HATED those video game things. Children seemed to be swallowed whole by those things, but she supposed it was unavoidable. Still, maybe she’d just pop into ExLibris and browse for a little bit. There was no way Rosalind would be as thrilled Christmas morning with a hardbound copy of Black Beauty with art quality block print illustrations as she would be opening a brand new shiny PSP that beeps and blinks and glows, but Julie couldn’t help but remember getting her first grown up book like that. The smell, the feel, everything about it was wonderful. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to go look.
The traffic was light and the stores along main street weren’t too full. She wandered past fancy boutiques and shoe stores. She gazed at a lovely dress in the window at one store but decided it was probably not really her style. She finally came to the small side street ExLibris was on. It was really more of an alley but she supposed a car could fit down it if it had to. The wide wood plank door creaked open. It always reminded her of something out of Harry Potter but the store itself was new and modern. That is to say, well lit and clean and well stocked with all the latest books, but it also had a mix of the old and dusty and well loved novels mixed in and around the Grisham’s and Granger’s and Grime’s. That’s what she loved. She wandered back through the stacks of tombs gazing at the occasional worn dusty leather back that faced her with such familiar names as Tolstoy and Shakespeare and Moliere. She came to the young readers section and her eyes fell on a a very familiar name, The Secret Garden by Francis Hodgson Burnett. It was hard bound, worn but still had a little of the gold gilt on the edges. The illustrations were art quality block prints and the end papers were in tact. This was truly a treasure. It made Julie smile as she ran her hands over the raised lettering on the cover then sigh as she slipped it back on the shelf.
“I know that sigh.”
The voice was somewhat familiar but the accent was American. Who did she know who was American? She turned to see and the quizzical look on her face fell into one of pure astonishment. Glenn Frey was standing behind her holding a book and grinning at her.
“Let me guess. Your…” He paused, assaying her before continuing, “…daughter? Wants a video game, but you want to give her …” she slipped his hand behind her and took the book she’d just returned to the shelf into his hand. He looked at it and smiled softly. “You want to give her a world of beauty and mystery that she can return to again and again.”
Julie was still a little too dumbstruck to reply.
“Still I guess it wont make the same kind of impact on Christmas morning as a video game.. Glenn shook his head. “Kids”
Julie was beginning to find her voice. “You..you’re …”
Glenn smiled “I'm sorry, I should have introduced myself. I'm Glenn.” He held out his hand to her.
She glanced down at it briefly and reached out to take it. “I know.”
He smiled as he shook her hand. “And your name is…? “
“I'm a huge fan.” Julie blushed as she realized she had missed his question. Glenn chuckled. “I mean, my name is Julie and I am a huge fan. I have been for 20 years!”
Glenn playfully stumbled and gasped. “20 years? I know I'm that old, but there’s no way you could be.”
Julie smiled. “Oh you’d be surprised.”
Glenn looked at her for a long moment, keeping a tight hold of her hand before clasping it in both of his and smiling softly. “you know, I think I might just be, pleasantly so.”
Glenn nodded towards the book he’d laid down on a table near by, the same book Julie had been sighing over. “So was I right?”
Julie looked at him quizzically then followed his gaze to the book.
“Oh yes, right on the button. My daughter wants one of those hand held video game machines. I just despise those but she’s a good girl. Smart and an avid reader, like me and I suppose her happiness is what’s important.”
His hands were still warm and strong holding hers and she could have stayed there all day surrounded by old books like old friends holding the hand of this man she’d so loved and admired for so long, but the bell over the door of the shop rang and brought her back to her senses and she gently pulled her hand away.
“I’m sorry. I don’t want to keep you away from.. well whatever brought you here. I'm sure you must..”
“Have lunch with me.” He was still watching her. She nervously pulled her hair away from her face.
“I'm, excuse me? I'm sorry. I don’t think I heard you.”
He grinned. “Have lunch with me. I'm only in town for another day trying to set up some concert venues down here and I hate eating alone. I don’t have any more meetings till tonight and I'm starved.”
Julie laughed a little as all his words had just fallen out of his mouth in such a rush, he seemed like a little boy.
“All right” she grinned back.
His eyes widened briefly and a smile blossomed across his face making him look so young. “Great! There’s this Indian place just around the corner I’ve been dying to try. It looks pretty authentic.”
Julie knew exactly the place he was talking about and she was really glad she’d chosen her tan trousers today. They had huge pillows you sat on and you ate with your hands off of beautiful rugs on the painted cement floor. She and Michael had been there once, but Michael wasn’t fond of very spicy foods, so they’d never gone back.
Glenn wrapped her hand around his forearm as they walked, opening the doors for her and placing his hand on the small of her back as he escorted her through the doors. They walked slowly down the streets chatting easily about family and kids and the difficulties they face being torn between what was the right thing and the best things to do. Julie was shocked to realize how easy it was to talk to him. Their conversation just flowed like water. She was also surprised to see that the restaurant wasn’t very busy till she realized it was only 11:00am. Glenn smiled sheepishly.
“You’ll have to forgive me. My watch is set for Aussie time, but my stomach is still on LA time”
They chuckled as the waiter led them to their seats. Julie was concerned about being graceful or even comfortable sitting on the floor, but the pillows were big and soft and lent just enough support and, best of all, Glenn was sitting beside her, not across from her. It seemed so much more intimate.
“Do you like spicy foods?” Glenn was browsing a menu, as the waiter handed her one as well.
“I love it, but not too spicy.”
Glenn smiled. “I love it too. Would you trust me to order for both of us?”
“Certainly. I’ve only ever had Indian foods a few times and never did know what I was eating.” She laughed.
Glenn ordered their feast like a native occasionally explaining to her what he was ordering and any special instructions he gave. In what seemed like mere moments after they’d ordered a parade of dishes arrived at their table, each one looking and smelling more exotic then the last. Tangines filled with spiced meats in red, yellow and green sauces and bowls of vegetables sprinkled with nuts surrounded them and huge round flat breads flanked them on either side. Glenn tore off a piece of flat bread and used it to scoop up a piece of spicy meat in a green sauce, tasting it delicately then moaning with pleasure. The sound sent chills through Julie and suddenly she was very hungry.
Glenn smiled at her then popped the rest of the flat bread and meat in his mouth, chewed and swallowed.
“You’ve got to taste this.” He used the flat bread to scoop up another smaller bite and held it up to her. She was leaning forward keeping her eyes on him as he held the food to her mouth. “It’s braised goat in an herb garlic sauce. Not too spicy.”
Julie paused at the word goat and gave him a worried look. He grinned.
“It’s good. I promise”
Here she was, Glenn Frey feeding her exotic foods in a dark, romantic café, her mouth open already. She closed her eyes and leaned forward. He was right. It was good. She heard herself moaning just as he had before. And when she opened her eyes and looked at him. He was smiling and watching her eat.
“See? Good huh?”
Julie suddenly felt self conscious and blushed a little she leaned back and wiped her mouth nodding. “Very good. I really, honestly never thought I’d be eating goat.”
Glenn laughed, “well, there’s more.”
They spent the rest of the meal enjoying the adventure together, laughing, talking, sharing bites of this or that and sipping a strong, heady wine. It seemed as if only minutes had passed when they finished but it was nearly 3pm and they both had to run. Glenn walked Julie back to her car, the coolish breeze helping to clear her head of all the wine and spice that had wrapped itself around her only moments ago. Still, the man walking beside her who so easily fit his arm around her waist, was having a similar effect.
“Julie, I want to thank you for this afternoon. It’s lonely sometimes, being the guy in charge, and touring makes it just that much harder. Even being home now, everyone seems to have their own stuff going on and I start to feel left out and very alone. Today was the first day I’ve felt like I was actually with someone who felt like home. “ He blushed a little and reached into his coat pocket pulling out his wallet. He extracted a card and handed it to her. “This is my cell phone and my office address. You can always reach me there. If you need anything, or just want to chat…” He closed her hand around the card. “Please. I don’t want to loose you.”
Julie stood stunned looking into his eyes. He bent down and kissed her cheek lightly, pausing just a moment to let his lips brush the skin there, then whispered “thank you.” He stood and backed away from her slowly smiling and holding her hand till he couldn’t any longer then turned to walk away. He crossed the street and was walking down the sidewalk, turned back once, blew her a kiss and walked away. She stood there for a long moment frozen in place then shook herself awake. Rosalind would be home from school any moment. She needed to get home. Still she drove in a trance which lasted the rest of the night.

Christmas had come and gone and the family sat together in the living room, she and Michael sipping heady wine and watching some holiday program on TV. Julie’s mind weeks and miles away, remembering another heady wine she’d enjoyed another time. Michael jumped up.
“Oh, I nearly forgot. A package came for Rosalind a few days ago.” He went to the hall closet and pulled out a brown paper package and handed it to Rosalind. “It says it’s from ExLibris, down town.”
“ExLibris? But I didn’t…” Julie was confused, she hadn’t purchased anything from ExLibris had she? She didn’t remember buying anything. She’d bought the video game for Rosalind, but still, here was a package. Maybe she’d just forgotten.
Michael shrugged.
Rosalind, thrilled at the mystery of it all, tore open the paper. An envelope fell out addressed to Julie. Rosalind handed it to her as she examined the book she was holding.
“The Secret Garden by Francis by Francis Hodgson Burnett. This is a children’s book, Mum! “ She opened it. “Oh! There’s an inscription! ‘Enjoy your video games, but never underestimate the power of a good read.’ And it’s signed G.” Rosalind looked up at her mother who was holding two passes for an Eagles concert in Sydney to be announced at a later date a long with a short note. ‘Looking forward to coming home again. Hope to see you there, Love G’
Julie’s flushed face looked up smiling widely. “Oh, just a distant relative”

Rhonda, I must have mentioned that Rosalind has just read The Secret Garden or if I haven't that was uncanny. She's a Nintendo DS girl too, so your Playstation part was pretty accurate. Of course I'm the avid reader too - if only a book store like that existed in Sydney.

The idea of sitting in an Indian restaurant on huge pillows next to THAT.... I liked it when you said it was sometimes lonely for him being in charge, etc. Thank you so much for that.

The address to get the MSG show is rockconcertdvd. net. Here is the specific link:

http://www.rockconcertdvd.net/shop/index.php?target=categories&category_id=243

As I say, I got MSG, not Newark. I sat & watched it on my birthday night and the majority of it is filmed from the big screens. Only towards the end does it for some reason revert to being shot from way back on the side, but it goes back to closeups for TIE & Desperado.
