My niece Barb bought me a book called Music Listography/Your Life In Playlists that is really cool. It has pages and pages of different lyrics from songs and every other page has a different topic for a playlist the you fill out like list your top twenty favorite songs, list the best songs of the 70's, list bands you do NOT like, list what songs you'd put on your makeout tape or list your top favorite male vocalists of all time. The only stipulation she gave me is that after I have completed the book, she wants to read it. :hilarious: It's going to be really fun to fill out and really going to take some thinking as I do it. Of course the kids & I got to talking about it last night and asking each other questions. My daughter came up with a great one for me--- Who is your favorite artist and it CAN'T be an Eagle? Like she thought I would tell her one of the Eagles --ok, so I would have but how dare she presume! :hilarious: Well my answer was Mr. Jimmy Page which my daughter said she figured I would say.

Anyways-I kinda thought it would be fun to include some of the topics in this thread and see what kind of list we all come up with. If people want to participate, we can change the topic with a new list name every few days.

Here's the first one.....

LIST THE BEST DUETS

TimothyBFan

Off the top of my head, the best duets include a few by no other than Stevie Nicks.

1. Leather & Lace-Stevie Nicks & Don Henley
2. Stop Draggin' My Heart Around-Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty
3. Midnight Train-Jonny Lang & Buddy Guy
4. Dancing In The Street-David Bowie & Mick Jagger
5. Don't Give Up-Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush
6. Beast Of Burden-Bette Midler & Mick Jagger
7. If I Close My Eyes-Ozzy Osbourne & Lita Ford
8. Riding With The King-Eric Clapton & B B King
9. Little Drummer Boy-David Bowie & Bing Crosby
10. Walk This Way-Aerosmith & Run DMC (is it a duet when it's 2 groups together?)

No real rules here---no particular amount you have to list and really loose interpretation of what a "duet" is.

This is a great topic, Willie, but you are right that it will take some thought (at least for me). After the holidays, I may have more time to think about this and give a better response. I do agree with you about Leather & Lace being one of the all time best though.

Off the top of my head I like Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough with Don Henley and Patty Smyth.

Just a bit off topic - I always thought a duet with Don Henley and Norah Jones would be nice.

Don’t Give Up - Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush
Where the Wild Roses Grow - Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue
Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough - Don Henley and Patty Smyth.
Senza Una Donna (Without A Woman) - Zucchero feat. Paul Young

Funeral Playlist

I've always wanted my funeral to be a comfort to those I've left behind, so I want to have a preacher tell everyone I'm in a better place, then lead the attendees in the hymn "Because He Lives (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw1i9eIrY_g)." It's very appropriate - full of hope and encouragement for the living. The last verse goes:

And then one day, I'll cross the river
I'll fight life's final war with pain
And then as death gives way to victory,
I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know He lives.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow
Because He lives, all fear is gone
Because I know he holds the future
And life is worth the living
Just because He lives.

I think that's all I'll have sung at the funeral itself. At the reception, though, when everyone is reminiscing about my awesomeness... we can rock. ;) They're gonna have to play at least one song from all my favorites. Again, I'm gonna try for appropriate but also uplifting.

Eagles - Ol' 55 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ve4kkVjZfgc)
(OK, I know the obvious choice is "It's Your World Now", but that's almost TOO obvious. I don't think "Ol' 55" is about death in the mind of Tom Waits, but it can be applied to someone being called home to Heaven. I like making people think, lol.)

Fleetwood Mac - Gypsy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soioqrYorq4)

Fleetwood Mac - Landslide (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WM7-PYtXtJM)

Glenn Frey - Part of Me, Part of You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61wd57aGWXY)

Stevie Nicks - Touched By an Angel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UurPDrrRe4)

Lindsey Buckingham - Soul Drifter (http://vodpod.com/watch/1159306-lindsey-buckingham-soul-drifter)

My list:
The Great Gig in the Sky- Pink Floyd
Afterglow & Ripples (both acoustic versions) - Genesis
In My Time Of Dying-Led Zeppelin
Morning Has Broken - Cat Stevens
Amazing Grace

I don't have any preferences.

Off the top of my head:

Desperado (Glenn's Casino Rama version)
Part Of Me, Part Of You
Eleanor Rigby - Beatles
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road -Elton John
Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits
Air On The G String - J.S. Bach
Largo (2nd Movement of New World Symphony) - Dvorak

Glennsallnighter

Is 'Largo' the piece of music also referred to as 'Goin Home?' FP?

I haven't really thought too much about my funeral (I'm too busy livin to think about dyin') But after this Christmas 'chocolate bender' maybe I should. I know for definite I would like 'Peaceful Easy Feeling', 'Where Peaceful Water's Flow' by Chris De Burgh, IDTWNW as a solo and 'Through The Barricades' by Spandau Ballet.
If I decide to get cremated I suppose 'The Heat is On' would be slightly appropriate.

Is 'Largo' the piece of music also referred to as 'Goin Home?' FP?

Yes (it's the slow movement of the symphony). Which of course reminded me that at my funeral I would also have another tune called Going Home, the one by M. Knopfler.

The song that I would want played at my funeral is When I Get Where I'm Going by Brad Paisley and Dolly Parton.

Robert Palmer (I want to be one of those skinny girls, dressed in a little black dress, hair slicked back & bright lipstick) :hilarious:

No no woman, for the love of god, Nooooooo!!!! :hilarious:

This hits close to home, because I've always wanted to sing. Of course, I'd rather have my own backups, but if I have to sing backup, anybody would be fine, as long as I like the music. (I have always envied backup singers, getting to be on stage with awesome performers. I always wonder if they talk to the performer a lot, know the performer well, joke around with the performer during rehearsals and before the show,,,)

Smuggler's Blues - Glenn Frey
You Belong to the City - Glenn Frey
Boys of Summer - Don Henley

Material Girl - Madonna
(I wanted men fawning over me like that!)

Where the Streets Have No Name - U2

Wanted Dead or Alive - Bon Jovi
(it's hard to feel sorry for rich rock stars but this video managed it!)

November Rain - Guns'n'Roses

My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It) - En Vogue
(How slammin' are these girls??)

Addicted to Love - Robert Palmer
(ingrained in pop culture)

Everybody Hurts - REM
(strangely moving)

Man in the Mirror - Michael Jackson (this seems like a pretty simple video, but when I was little, those photos of great people doing great things towards the end moved me)

In truth, the lyrics are very bitter.)

I know. When my niece was reading my list in the book, she told me her song for this is Black Betty by Ram Jam. :stunned: I told her I would of never thought of THAT song as motivational. She explained that it's the kind of song that no matter how bad or down she is feeling, if she hears that song, it gets her up moving, smiling and singing along. In other words, just makes her feel good and motivates her. Like I told her, hey, whatever works!!

I honestly don't have people I would necessarily 'tie the knot' with. The people I will list are here more for their talent than for their looks and they are pretty predictable.

Paul McCartney
Mark Knopfler
Robert Plant
Mick Jagger
David Gilmour
Robbie Robertson (around the time of The Last Waltz)
Bryan Ferry

Then I struggle. Much as I love Neil Young and Bob Dylan I don't put them in this category, really. Same with Sir Elton and he - er - isn't available!

I don't think I left anyone important out, did I?!

The BoDeans are originally from a town about 20 miles west of me -so they're kind of hometown heroes. The best part of that is that they do shows locally all the time so seeing them live is easy to do.

I'll always love Robin Zander from Cheap Trick even though he cut off all that beautiful hair. Plus, he's turned out to be a little weird. He has like 3 kids that he's named Robin...boys and girls. George Foreman Syndrome, I guess.

Willie, can you please elaborate on what you mean by 'drive you crazy'? You mean you don't like it? HEY JUDE?!! And Bridge Over Troubled Water? I won't attempt to answer this until you clarify it somewhat.

TimothyBFan
02-10-2010, 09:24 AM
I guess you can interpret any way you want to interpret "crazy". My list is songs I don't care if I ever hear and when I do, I usually turn them off. Songs I've heard to much, don't like or just don't get why people find them so "special". I knew when I put Hey Jude and BOTW on there-I'd hear about it but I seriously have never liked either of them and they drive me crazy to hear. Sorry to all fans of both of those songs.

Brooke

These songs DRIVE ME CRAZY and I can't get to the radio soon enough to change the station!

1. Squeeze Box-The Who
2. Loving You-Teresa Carpio (aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhiiiiiiaaaaa!)
3. Afternoon Delight-Starland Vocal Band
4. Funky Nassau-The Beginning of the End (what kind of band name is that?)

And Willie, I'll go with Muskrat Love, too!

OK... at the risk of upsetting Soda ......

Anything by U2. I think it best that I don't elaborate.
I agree with Willie about Celine Dion, and I also include Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston in that (apologies to anyone who likes those women).
Dum Dum Diddle and some other Abba songs with 'nursery rhyme' lyrics from their early albums (although bizarrely, Dum Dum Diddle is from my favourite Abba album, Arrival).

There are a couple of songs by my favourite artists that I don't really care about, and don't really need to hear, but I wouldn't necessarily have used the term 'they drive me crazy'. These include:

Better In The USA - Glenn Frey (What was he thinking)?
Teenage Jail - Eagles (I listened to this yesterday. It is fairly pointless).
Honey Pie - Beatles (I get annoyed when McCartney does his cutesy 20s pastiche stuff. I suppose most people would say Maxwell's Silver Hammer but that has a certain bizarre charm).
Secondary Waltz - Mark Knopfler (Usually MK is capable of writing very quirky 'character' songs and making them believable. This one is about high school students being taught to dance by an ex military man. I don't get it.
Listen To The Lion - Van Morrison (He bares his soul in this, but it is far too long).
Tragedy - Bee Gees (I love them but the falsetto is done to death here).

These songs drive my crazy and I can't hear them long!

My Heart Will Go On - CELINE DION

I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston
Life is live - Opus
Lemon Tree - Fool's Garden
..... and many more!

It's hilarious to see everyone's various tastes! For instance a lot of you can't stand Celine Dion or Whitney Houston (both of whom I love, vocally) and a lot of you love the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, etc (all of whom I'm really not a fan of....although I'm getting a little more into Beatles stuff). We're a varied group with a really big favorite group in common ;)

TBF i have actually seen Styx with Lawrence Gowan (on tour with Def Leppard) he's not too bad but for me Styx will always be DeYoung, Shaw, JY, Chuck and John. I like their stuff from the 70's and 80's.

I was never a big DeYoung fan myself. LOVED everyone else and I'm sorry to say, what really turned me off of DeYoung, I believe, was the whole Mr Roboto thing. Anyways, have gotten to see them a couple of times now with Lawrence and was actually blown away by him. He's all over the stage and just such a personality, and sounds so great. After the first concert, I googled him and found out what kind a big star he already was in some countries before being asked to join Styx. I'm now hooked.

But I know what you mean---this is really rare for me to like someone that has replaced an original member of a band, example: Journey---sorry, just not the same without Steve Perry!

But again just my opinion.

I agree Mr. Roboto was a bad move (some of the other songs on the Kilroy album were not too bad) but like you said i don't really like people replacing other members in a band (Journey, ect..) And i actually do like some of Gowan's solo stuff! he's good in his own right i think i just have a problem replacing one of my favorite members in the band but thats JMO:)

But Anyway One Hit Wonders:

Always Something There-Naked Eyes
Rock On-David Essex
Wasting My Time Default
Soft Cell Tainted Love
Dream Academy - Life in a Northern Town
Semisonic - Closing Time
Bad English - When I See You Somie

Every time I hear the song "Believe it or Not", I think of George Costanza from "Seinfeld" and his answering machine message..."Believe it or not, George isn't at home..."

Love Seinfeld and I remember that episode!

Willie, Itchycoo Park is a great track.

I have a Partridge Family CD (ducks)
I have a Smokie CD (I don't know if they had any hits in the States but in Britain they had hits with covers of Living Next Door To Alice & Needles & Pins - unless they did the original of 'Alice', I'm not sure).

So What is a great track.

I have NEVER considered Abba or the Bee Gees to be guilty pleasures. I saw the Bee Gees twice & they were two of the best shows I ever saw. I can understand why they may be regarded this way as there was such a backlash against them at one point.

As for John Denver I defy anyone to tell me that Rocky Mountain High isn't one of the best songs ever written. Stuff like Grandma's Feather Bed is a bit more dubious, I grant you.

Smokie I do know because of the peeps on the Sweet board I belong to. They've turned me on a bit to those songs.

Glad to see I'm not the only one that considers some of Barry Manilow's stuff ok to listen to.

Walk Like An Egyptian-The Bangles
What's guilty about this? Love them!

Can't Touch This-MC Hammer
Ice Ice Baby-Vanilla Ice
Just A Friend-Biz Markie
Wild Thing & Funky Cold Medina-Tone LocAgreed!

Total Eclipse of The Heart - Bonny Tyler
One of my favorite songs of all time. I feel it deserves to be adored, so no guilt there!

"Weird" Al Yankovic -1st concert I took my kids to
Love him! "Amish Paradise" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOfZLb33uCg) and "White and Nerdy" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9qYF9DZPdw) are two favorites, and you gotta love the classics like "Fat" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqz1ojIQTBk) - he's great. When it's goofy like that, it's supposed to be a guilty pleasure. ;)

The MonkeesI was so hardcore into these guys when I was 10-12 that I can't call them a guilty pleasure. I still love 'em. They were my favorite group and I had a crush on Mickey Dolenz. I watched their show on MTV every day, I bought all their albums on cassette tape, and used the family's new computer (purchased in 1986) to write up all the lyrics to their songs, which I called "The Monkee Treasury." Oh gosh, when I type it out, it sounds lame. But remember how young I was! Plus, I wanted badly to have a reason to use the computer. Even then... lol

They were the first rock concert I ever went to (I don't count seeing Leif Garrett when I was four because I was only brought along due to lack of a babysitter. Mom and Dad still love to recount how I spun, jumped around, and clapped my hands to songs like "I Was Made for Dancing" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hihp_Jjdnsg) much to the amusement of audience members surrounding us.)

"Push It" - Salt N PepaI almost put this one but decided they had enough street cred not to count. ;)

"True" -Spandau BalletAwesomeness.

Re Weird Al Yankovic, the man is incredibly funny. As well as those Soda mentioned you cannot go past Eat It ('you better chow down or it's gonna get cold'!), Living With A Hernia and It's All About The Pentiums. As a Dire Straits tragic though, I thought his version of Money For Nothing/Beverly Hillbillies missed the mark lyrically, though it's fun to watch. For a perfect parody of Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues try 'Bob'.

I thought about Cover Of The Rolling Stone & I don't think it's a guilty pleasure -some of their later stuff like When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman may class as 'guilty'.

Flowers On The Wall gained instant cred when it was in Pulp Fiction.

Maybe some people think Neil Diamond is a guilty pleasure. I cite the awesome live version of Crunchy Granola Suite (GOOD LORD)! The man is a fantastic songwriter and if you want to hear him at his best try his two most recent albums 12 Songs and Home Before Dark. There is more to him than Sweet Caroline and Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show (much as I like those songs).

ELO might be another one of my guilty pleasures. Again, I think Jeff Lynne is a great singer, songwriter & producer & I would not swap some of their songs for anything.

Ah, can't forget "Eat It" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyfcOriVKBM)! I thought his parody of Stevie Nicks' Stop Draggin' My Heart Around called "Stop Draggin' My Car Around" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmfc67NfwOw) wasn't his best effort either, but perhaps it's because I'm tragic, too. ;)

Ahhh, all the classics! My favorities include: "Livin' in the Fridge" (Livin' on the Edge), "Spam" (Stand), "Smells Like Nirvana" (Smells Like Teen Spirit), "Pretty Fly for a Rabbi" (Pretty Fly for a White Guy), "Jerry Springer" (One Week) and of course, all of his polka classics!

My brother, Danny, had the permed hair, cheesy little mustache and big glasses in the 70's and early 80's. He looked so much like Weird Al that one of my boys (when they were younger) brought a family photo album to me and aksed why I had so many pictures of Weird Al in the album.

Yes, I agree FP that "Flowers on the Wall" garnered a whole new generation after Pulp Fiction. Both of my kids have that song on their IPods because of that movie. My mom (who adored the Statlers and played their albums endlessly when I was a little girl) would be amused that my kids even know who the Statlers are. She on the other hand would probably not have approved of the song being used in that particular movie!

There are so many! And I didn't even do scores like the famous instrumental themes from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Chariots of Fire... Also, I didn't include this below, but pretty much every musical moment from Forrest Gump fits perfectly. So, these are the ones I came up with!

"Maniac" from Flashdance (it really conveys how she feels a part of the dance and her sense of desperation about working hard enough to "make it" as a dancer):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORVxGDxoVio

"Stayin' Alive" from Saturday Night Fever (the way he struts in those awesome disco shoes, checking out the babes, chowing down on some pizza, living his life to a beat... it defines the character). The song starts at 0:50:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvrMSGQJiwQ

"Johnny B. Goode" from Back to the Future (Marty McFly introduced Chuck Berry to Rock'n'Roll!):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFgI1FaLpGM

"And I Am Telling You" - Dreamgirls (Heartbreaking. She just sounds so desperate and then she just goes nuts!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsiSRSgqE4E

"All By Myself" - Bridget Jones's Diary (tired-of-being-single Bridget drunkenly lip syncing to this ode to loneliness is a hoot):

And a few sentimental faves:

"The Rainbow Connection" - The Muppet Movie

I don't have that many. It's my husband who is the guitar freak.

My favourite guitarist is - well, like Willie, you can probably guess if you read my posts.

Mark Knopfler
Jimmy Page
Eric Clapton
Joe Walsh
Keith Richards
George Harrison
Brian May
David Gilmour
Frank Zappa
Davey Johnstone (he contributed superb stuff to Elton John's albums & has never received much recognition)

(The people my husband likes, like Joe Satriani & Steve Vai, are technical wizards and what they do leaves me cold for the most part, although I like some of Vai's stuff).

I second Do Something. Some of these may not exactly constitute "advice", but they all mean something, or include particular lyrics that make me think about the way I live my life.

Ain't Wastin' Time No More - Allman Brothers Band
Simple Things - Paolo Nutini
Don't Stop - Fleetwood Mac
For The Good Times - Al Green
Beautiful - Carole King
Here And Now - Del Amitri
The Heart Of The Matter - Don Henley

Wow! I will give it a go. Some of these may just include sentiments that I find inspiring (to echo Troub's post).

Take It Easy - Eagles
Learn To Be Still - Eagles
You Are Not Alone - Eagles
Do Something - Eagles
Part Of Me, Part Of You - Glenn Frey
Common Ground - Glenn Frey
Hey Jude - Beatles
Let It Be - Beatles
Strawberry Fields Forever - Beatles
Tomorrow Never Knows - Beatles
Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits
Why Worry - Dire Straits
Solid Rock - Dire Straits
Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin

Stayin' Alive - Bee Gees
You'll Never Walk Alone - Gerry & the Pacemakers
Days - The Kinks
Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel
You Can't Always Get What You Want - Rolling Stones
Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel

That is more than 20 and is probably just scratching the surface, and if the same aritsts keep turning up in these lists that is just how it is with me. Some of these songs were in my 'motivational songs' list on page 4 of this topic. I need to find songs by other artists.

Faith No More
The Cult

Late to the party but I noticed no one mentioned my favorite duet, which coincidentally features Henley - "Snakes and Ladders," with Joni Mitchell. It's a rather depressing and vapid chronicle of love from the first glance through divorce, so radically disparate from almost everything else I've ever heard that it captivates me every time. I don't believe it's on any of his collections but I found it on Joni Mitchell: The Complete Geffen Recordings.

Also, I enjoyed reading the responses to this one. Verrry interesting. :)

P.S. - My favorite artist biography is Girls Like Us, which dovetails the life stories of Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon and Carole King. But honorable mention to Levon Helm's This Wheel's on Fire, definitely a must-read for any Band fan.

Laura Jackson's book on the Eagles is about the best there is on them because neither Marc Shapiro's The Long Run or Marc Eliot's To The Limit are worth the effort, frankly.

My husband loves DLR & has a copy of Crazy From The Heat. He is an avid Rush fan and persuaded me to read Neil Peart's books, The Masked Rider, Ghost Rider, Traveling Music and Roadshow. They are very well written if a bit smug in places (Ghost Rider is about how Peart tragically lost both his daughter & wife & then went on his motorbike to escape).

Ian MacDonald's magnificent Revolution In The Head is essential for Beatles fans. It is an analysis of the musc, not a biography. I have another book called A Day In The Life by Marc Hertsgaard which is more generalised.

Hammer Of The Gods is far, FAR better than Mick Wall's When Giants Ruled The Earth, one of the most pretentious and self-referential tomes it has been my misfortune to read.

Michael Gray's Song & Dance Man is a very deep analysis of Bob Dylan's work and has entire chapters on Dylan's use of the Bible and nursery rhymes. It is only for Dylan fanatics.

Hey ABM! Nice to see you 'round these parts again!

I don't read that many rock'n'roll biographies, but the Headliners books on both the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac are informative and interesting, especially since they were written during the band's heyday.

What I'd really love to see in an Eagles biography would be a relation of events HFO and beyond. We know next to nothing about them post-70s because all these books want to write about are their hedonistic escapades.

This isn't a joke - I don't have any. I am not a fan of Eagles Live because it does not sound very 'live' (it is heavily overdubbed). I will list the following.

Hell Freezes Over - Eagles
Live - Glenn Frey (plus a large number of bootlegs)
Good Evening New York City - Paul McCartney
It's Too Late To Stop Now - Van Morrison
The Skiffle Sessions - Morrison/Donegan/Barber
BBC Live In Concert - Hunter Ronson Band
'Royal Albert Hall' - Bob Dylan (it's actually the Manchester Free Trades Hall)
Live 1975 - Rolling Thunder Review - Bob Dylan
Concert In Central Park - Simon & Garfunkel
You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vols 1 - 6 - Frank Zappa
Unplugged - Neil Young
Learning To Flinch - Warren Zevon
Delicate Sound of Thunder - Pink Floyd

I really don't have many either. Actually 2:

Eagles Live
Hell Freezes Over

I don't really like live albums because the crowd noise gets in the way of the music for me.

I can tell already how predictable this will probably be. I don't listen to anything new, which is my big failing. I just obsess about certain tracks. I was wondering if anyone was going to ask something like this because I would have an excuse to list them. These are not necessarily in my all time favourites list but even when I am not hearing them I think about them all the time.

I Love To Watch A Woman Dance - Eagles
Long Road Out Of Eden - Eagles
POMPOY (because it is that sort of song)
Sailing To Philadelphia - Mark Knopfler
Amsterdam - Crowded House (from their new album)
29 Palms - Robert Plant
Kashmir - Led Zeppelin (I think about this song all the time)
The World Isn't Fair - Randy Newman (sums up my politics)
Sweet Home Chicago - Eric Clapton (I want to go back there whenever I hear it)
Wonderful Remark - Van Morrison
In The Air Tonight - Phil Collins (magnificent piece of work)
I'm In Love With My Car - Queen (hilarious lyrics)
Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty (Hello England! See you in two weeks)
Why Worry - Dire Straits (it helps me when I feel stressed)
El Macho - Mark Knopfler (this is a particular favourite. I don't know why).
Tunnel Of Love - Dire Straits ('from Cullercoats to Whitley Bay' will be in Geordieland in just over a month).
A Month Of Sundays - Don Henley (re. the 'solo songs of the moment' thread)
Money - Pink Floyd (more English angst)
He's Misstra Know It All - Stevie Wonder (I heard this recently and it is brilliant).

I have one:

List 20 songs by 20 of your favourite aritsts (or more than one song per artist if you wish) that means a great deal to YOU personally but that you don't necessarily think is a big favourite even of the artists' most dedicated fans. These are 'hidden gems' if you like.

To illustrate, my first of these is New Kid In Town, which is one of my top ten songs of all time, but since the band stopped playing it live seems to have fallen off the radar. We rarely even mention it on the board these days. Its heartbreaking and passionate magnificence will always make it special just to me.

Now my other 19 songs (I have included two by Bob Dylan & Van Morrison).

And Your Bird Can Sing - Beatles
Absolutely Sweet Marie - Bob Dylan
Senor (Tales of Yankee Power) - Bob Dylan
He Took Advantage - Glenn Frey (* because I had to have one)
In The Gallery - Dire Straits
The Trawlerman's Song - Mark Knopfler
I Can't See Nobody - Bee Gees
I'm Gonna Crawl - Led Zeppelin
Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock'n'Roll) - Elton John

Bad News From Home - Randy Newman
In Your Mind - Bryan Ferry
Thanks For The Information - Van Morrison
Cleaning Windows - Van Morrison

200 bucks?? Are you kidding? Wow...I never paid more than 20 dollars! And I've seen him three, it may be four times. All in little clubs. He is short, but very cute and really nice. He actually remembered us the third time we saw him. I'll look for the picture.

Re Moments In Music I'll Never Forget:

1970 - I vaguely remember walking into our living room & an item came on the TV announcing the Beatles had broken up.

1972-73 - Being in England & first hearing Slade,Bowie, Elton & T. Rex although I was supposed to be a Donny Osmond & David Cassidy fan.

March 22, 1975 - When I went to my first ever concert, my Australian teenage heroes Sherbet. I was to see them about ten times in subsequent years, maybe more.

Mid 1975 - My first concert by an overseas act, Status Quo, then at the height of their success with On The Level & the magnificent Down Down (This was my second favourite song for a while after the Beatles' Yesterday, which has always been my favourite song).

January 1976 - The Eagles tour Australia with new guitarist Joe Walsh. I was interested & intrigued.

Mid 1976 - Release of Queen's A Night At The Opera & Bohemian Rhapsody. Highly significant.

December 1976 - Release of Hotel California.

August 1977 - Death of Elvis Presley.

1978 - A couple of my favourite songss were released - Stayin' Alive, Baker Street & Wuthering Heights.

October 2, 1979 - first saw the cover of The Long Run. I think you know what happened next.

December 8, 1980 - Death of John Lennon. I was in London.

1979 - 1981- During my university years I was introduced to Van Morrison & Neil Young.

1982- Release of Glenn Frey's first solo album No Fun Aloud. I moved to Sydney this year & started going to concerts on a regular basis (mainly Elton John at first).

March 1983 - Simon & Garfunkel at the old Sydney Sports Ground - front row.

1985 - Release of Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms. I think I saw them for the first time in 1986 (& then in 1991 on the On Every Street tour).

August 5, 1988 - Little River Band with Glenn Frey - front row.

This is getting a bit too detailed so I will skip to 1994 when the Eagles reformed.

December 9, 1995 - first Eagles concert.

November - December 2004 - Farewell One Eagles concerts.

2007 (I think) Led Zeppelin reunion.

I could pad this out with more concerts & album releases. I have books about various music events but I prefer to think of what interested me personally.

1964-watching The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show (8 years old!)

November 1976-my first live concert and an Eagles one to boot in St. Louis. Even though we were in nosebleed and I don't remember a lot, I do remember it was one of the coolest things I ever got to do and my most favorite band EVER!

August 1977-death of Elvis Presley

December 1980-death of John Lennon

1980-82-hearing about the break up of my most favorite band ever. I was devestated.

1984-Toured Elvis' home Graceland.

October 1994-Seeing The Eagles on MTV....back together again! :yay: I vowed that somehow, someway, I would get to one of their concerts again.

February 2002-Crosby, Stills, Nash,& Young in St. Louis. Awesome!

July 2002-My 2nd Eagles concert in Ames, Iowa. 3rd row in front of Tim-I was in heaven seeing my favorite band up close like that. Tim nearly chose me during that show! We made eye contact more than once!

June 2003-My 3rd Eagles concert back in St. Louis. Not nearly as good seats, (row 25) but made my way up to the side front (by Joe) towards the end behind a couple rows of ecstatic fans.

May 2004-Aerosmith concert in Peoria. Amazing!

September 19, 2004-Don Henley solo in Springfield, MO. Meet & greet, autographs and a picture with him! I nearly cried when he walked in to the room. I got to meet the man behind the voice that I had loved for 32 years! One of the greatest moments in my life, right behind my engagement, wedding, and the birth of my kids! :sigh:

August 2006-John Fogerty concert in St. Louis. We went without tickets. Walked up to the box office that afternoon and they offered me front row center tickets! Willie Nelson opened. Boths shows were fantastic! John is my husbands all time favorite artist.

April 2008-Keith Urban concert in Peoria. 3rd row by the catwalk down the center! Awesome! A wild and crazy show!

September 2008-4th Eagles concert, in St. Louis-front row nearly center-VIP tickets! Another once in a lifetime! I got to meet a Borderer-tbsf!

March 2009-5th Eagles concert, in Columbia-8th row. I got to meet Peek!

June-2009-death of Michael Jackson

June-2010-6th Eagles concert, at Busch Stadium, St. Louis. Even though the seats were crappy and I couldn't see very well, an Eagles concert is a MOMENT for me!

Ive always been a dreamer

Love your list, twin-separated-at-birth. Mine would look very similar - just change the dates and locations on those Eagles shows and we're all set. Oh also, have to change you meeting Don to me meeting Glenn.

I had actually wanted to post a list in this thread, but have just never had the time to get around to it. Seriously though, Brooke - mine really would have been a lot like yours.

Amadeus is one of my Top 10 favourite movies. I have seen most of the ones TBF listed but I didn't think they were that great. I did like Walk The Line about Johnny Cash.

In terms of documentaries the magnificent Beatles Anthology stands alone.

I assume you mean from bad mood to good mood? There is one absolute certainly for me & that's Solid Rock by Dire Straits. I see whitcap mentions Walk Of Life. I will think about this. But Willie - Immigrant Song; yes. I thought about it before I saw it on your list. More later.

I've been thinking about this all morning. I will try to restrict this to one song per artist or the list will never end. I will cheat in one way & list one entire album that is mood changing for me; Making Movies by Dire Straits (which also means I don't have to list Solid Rock & can choose another DS song)!

I will try to do this but I might have to give explanations for a couple of them:

Oh Yeah - Roxy Music

This goes through all stages of the relationship but it ends with 'they're playing 'oh yeah' on the radio/and it's drowing the sound of my tears'. It's one of the most moving songs of all time.

Romeo And Juliet - Dire Straits

Why didn't I list this first?! Because it's only partially a breakup song; 'oh Romeo yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him'. It moves backwards & forwards. It is about both the exhilaration of first love & the disillusionment when it ends: 'when you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong'; but then he tries again at the end of the song.

50 Ways To Leave Your Lover - Paul Simon
Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me - Elton John
It's Your Life - Glenn Frey
Talking To The Moon - Don Henley
Waiting In The Weeds - Eagles
Best Of My Love - Eagles
No Reply - Beatles
You Can't Do That - Beatles
For No One - Beatles
Angie - Rolling Stones (sort of)
Where Do You Think You're Going - Dire Straits
Knowing Me, Knowing You - Abba
The Winner Takes It All - Abba
Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
Long Way To Go - Stevie Nicks
I'm Not In Love - 10cc
Hill Farmer's Blues - Mark Knopfler (he doesn't do breakup songs).
Suspicious Minds - Elvis Presley
How Can You Mend A Broken Heart - Bee Gees
Don't Think Twice, It's Alright - Bob Dylan

The whole Blood On The Tracks album - Bob Dylan
er.... that was easier than I thought.
