In America, many get today off to celebrate the life and work of this famous leader of the black civil rights movement. To learn more about him, read here:

Well Hope you all enjoyed your day off in the States. I think its good to honour people who have sacrificed their life for their beliefs and by doing so have made the world a better and fairer place in which to live.

OMG - I totally forgot to acknowledge this thread yesterday. But, the good news is that I didn't forget the day. Even though I don't watch that much television, I did watch a show last night about Dr. King to honor his day and his legacy.

Really quickly, before the day is out, I want to once again acknowledge the man whom we celebrate in the United States today, Martin Luther King, Jr.

Here's one of my favorite quotes of his, which I also posted on Facebook:

"An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity."

So true.

I've only lived in Memphis for a year and a half, but for locals, this day is especially significant because Martin Luther King was killed in this city while helping out Memphis sanitation workers. He was quite a man.

The last time there was an MLK Day thread here there were hardly any responses. I will just say that I thought he was an extraordinary man and how fitting it is that he now has a memorial in Washington:

In the immortal words of Stevie Wonder; Happy birthday! Happy birthday to ya!

Yes! He certainly was a man who changed American (and world) attitudes. A great leader. May he Rest In Peace
