Saw a couple Bernie mentions in the press lately and figured I'd start a thread. Here's the first:

I had no idea that Bernie had come from such a large musical family.

Me either, TBF. I had heard about Mark and Tom Leadon who were musicians, but that was it. I certainly didn't know that Bernie had 9 siblings.

“You know, originally they didn’t give Gram enough credit. Now they give him too much.”

Great quote. Bernie knows a thing or two about not getting enough credit as he was one of the pioneers of country rock music himself. Chris Hillman and Gene Clark are the ones I'd credit most. Of course they both worked with Bernie in previous bands, all of which predated the Flying Burrito Brothers by several years.

And quite frankly, without Bernie, the Eagles would never be where they are now....

Wow, this is so strange - I was just thinking about this quote today because I was listening to "My Man" and I return to the board to see it commented upon!

Indeed, Bernie doesn't get enough credit. It's ironic - when the Eagles began, he was the most recognizable name as a veteran of more than one well-respected band. As you pointed out, he had worked with the best in country rock prior to joining.

Two things stood out to me. He doesn't seem bitter or angry at having left the band. I like his "that's life" attitude, especially when you compare it to Don Felder's "poor me" attitude.

I also love that he ended the interview saying:
"Be nice to one another, it doesn't cost anything, and it makes the day so much more pleasant. Don't you think?"

I do, Bernie. I really do. :)

Found this cute mention today in an article about Fred Waleck (http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/rock-and-roll-music-icon-fred-walecki-owner-of-westwood-music-joins-max-sound-advisory-board-124771883.html)i:

Since the 1960s, Westwood Music and its owner have been at the center of rock and roll legend making. The stories of Fred Walecki are well known in the Global music scene, like the time [...] when Bernie Leadon promised to stand good for a Westwood Music charge account for his new band, which had come up with the questionable name of "The Eagles."

I think it's safe to say Walecki got a return on that investment. ;)

And what's so "questionable" about that name? lol

Bernie Leadon recently delivered a eulogy for friend and former bandmate Doug Dillard. You can read it in full here:

http://tagsrwc.com/the_ebullet/2012/06/the-ebullet-volume-12-special-edition-remembering-doug-dillard-June-2012/

Scroll down quite a bit for it; it's about three-quarters of the way down and entitled "Doug Dillard Eulogy by Bernie Leadon."

Bernie is getting a lot of press news on tour with the Eagles this year, but this one was specifically about him getting kudos from Linda Ronstadt in her new book Simple Dreams:

http://www.bringmethenews.com/2013/10/16/linda-ronstadt-praises-minneapolis-music-legend/

I especially liked her quote about Bernie in term's of his singing with the Eagles and I couldn't agree more:

“Don’s voice is certainly a great solo instrument and so is Glenn’s, they both can sing lead, but Bernie’s voice has a quality to it that enhances other voices. It’s a strong voice and he can crank it up in the high register. It was a real important voice in terms of forming the group’s vocal sound and what it made the vocal blend sound like. I always felt people didn’t necessarily notice it.”

Can't wait to hear him back in the blend when they come to L.A. in January

It's cool to hear Bernie's voice characterized that way. I don't think he gets enough props for his singing ability. I remember Glenn saying in the HOTE documentary that when Bernie left, their vocals as a band suffered but that's about it besides this.

UTW did some excellent detective work in uncovering a 2013 interview that Bernie did with WSM's John Cowan. He talks a lot about The Eagles, but I thought it would be a good idea to have it posted in forum as well. It's definitely worth a listen. Here is UTW's original post that I'm bringing over ...

Is it ok to put audio links in here? This is a long, long (maybe 2 hours!) interview with Bernie Leadon from 2013, probably just before he went on tour with the Eagles (I haven't got to the end yet so he may talk about that). He covers a lot of Eagles stuff and some I haven't heard/read before such as how Earlybird came to be written.

This is from the column of Doug Rumford, an ordained pastor who relates the topic of grace to his experience meeting Bernie and attending a concert from the HOTE tour.

It was an unforgettable experience. When we arrived at the Forum in Los Angeles, we went to a VIP entrance and were ushered to Bernie’s dressing room, where he greeted us warmly. Bernie really respects Bill and truly appreciated Bill bringing his pastor and wife. After some conversation, Bernie asked if we wanted to do anything special, and I asked if we could walk backstage and see his guitars. (I was thinking I might get some pointers for playing with my cover band, The Fabulous Edsels!) So Bernie took us backstage where we saw racks and racks of some of the finest guitars I will ever lay eyes on. In addition to Bernie’s guitars, we also saw two racks for Joe Walsh (of “Hotel California” fame), and guitars for Glenn Frey and the back-up band. Beautiful! (Sorry for all the exclamation points!). Most of the guitarists played a different guitar for every song. We also met the guitar technicians who continually tune and care for the instruments. Then there was the whole backstage set-up with the lights, computers, video equipment and so on.

After that tour we went back to Bernie’s dressing room and “hung out” for nearly half an hour, meeting some of Bernie’s family members and other friends he’d invited to the show. It was such a relaxing time. About 10 minutes before the concert began Sarah, Bill and I were ushered into our seats in Row Six, just to the right of center stage. I have never had such seats before—and never will again, I’m sure. I could watch all the chord progressions and lead-solo fingerings of Bernie and Joe Walsh—a guitarist’s dream! The concert was a blast—in more ways than one—and we felt a connection that really enhanced the whole experience.

You’re welcome, everyone!

This from Bernie’s ex Patti Davis back in Jan. 2016.

In 1972 I was smitten with the Eagles’ first album. One night when I was looking at the photo of Bernie Leadon in the album insert, I told my roommate that I was going to meet him.Yeah, okay, she said, not terribly convinced. I was 20 years old, working nights in a restaurant and sharing an apartment with a friend who worked at the same place. About a week later I walked into a music store in Westwood to get some guitar strings and Bernie Leadon was standing right there. We went to the beach that day, went back to his house in Topanga, and ended up together for the next 4 years.

Things like that happened in the 70s. Things like that happen when you’re young and go where your heart’s desires take you. Bernie, and the rest of the band, were a bit older than I was but we were all young…then. We thought life was a wide open land with roads both taken and untaken, but roads that were there for our choosing. We thought each dawn would melt off whatever damage we’d done to ourselves the night before. We thought age and infirmities were inconveniences that wouldn’t visit us for so many decades they didn’t warrant any consideration. We thought there were no consequences to drugs and drama.

She goes on to say she and Bernie are “good” now and “comfortable” being friends.

There was a People mag story about Bernie and Pattie? Was Don H upset because People wasn't hip enough or ... he didn't like Bernie getting more press attention?

I thought I read (maybe in Felder's book) that the other guys resented her being around all the time - in the studio + on the road. I guess the other girlfriends/wives weren't usually allowed to have a constant presence. And the security guards cramped their style too.

This is a dated but very interesting Hit Channel interview with Bernie from 2012. It looks like someone may have already posted it in this thread but the link is expired.

About some concert recordings he was working on (the Fred Walecki benefit?):

Firstly it’s a great honour for me to contact with you. Which are the current projects you’re involved in? Are you doing any recordings this period?

I recently went to London to work on concert recordings for a charity benefit. The recordings are from concerts in Los Angeles in the year 2000. Other than that, I mainly play banjo around the house for enjoyment.

About his album Mirror and his desire to maybe do just one more:

Your last solo efford in 2004 album ‘Mirror’.Are you satisfied by its result? Why it took you 27 years from your previous solo release?

Was I satisfied with the Mirror album? I don’t think we’re ever completely satisfied, and since we learn from doing it, there is always something we would like to do better, or again. But you have to do the best you can and let go of it. What happens after that is not up to me. Why 27 years? Well, its already been 7 more years since Mirror, it just goes by fast. I’m not out playing shows, and I have other things to do. The main thing is that you have to have the songs ready- I had maybe 50 songs to pick from for Mirror. I do have newer songs, but I don’t have the energy to do another one yet. But it would be nice to do at least one more.

And Eagles-related stuff:

Reading reviews and charts, I still can’t understand why ‘Desperado’ received so lukewarm recognition from fans and press when it released. Do you have an explanation?

“Desperado” was the second album by the Eagles. We had three hit single records off of the first album, titled «Eagles». Everyone in the industry, including the press, expected that we would follow the first album with more songs that could be hits. But I give a lot of credit to Glenn Frey (Eagles singer and vocalist) who insisted that we got commercial success with the 3 hits on the first albums, but we should immediately do an artsy album, and try to get critical success also as soon as possible. He felt that would help give the band enough weight to last for a while. The band has lasted for awhile, so maybe that was the right move.

But we did not have immediate top ten hits from the “Desperado” album. Some songs have become classics, including the song “Desperado”, which I love. That was Don Henley’s (Eagles drummer and vocalist) first song, by the way. I think Frey is credited also, but it is mainly Don’s song, and it is a great song.

How strange (and even unfair) is that you brought Don Felder (Eagles guitarist during the period 1974-2001) to Eagles and he stayed many more years than you?

Not unfair. Don Felder was in my high school band, and I was helping him out. After he arrived, it did help the band move in a direction in which I was less comfortable, but that’s life. He lasted longer, but left in the end also.

He also discusses playing with his former band the Scottsville Squirrel Barkers, mainstream country music, his friend and album collaborator Michael Georgiades, living in Nashville vs. L.A., and the influence of his father, who died in 2009.

Wow - Delilah - a great find ! Thank You so much ! Bernie seems to be such a down-to-earth sold guy. He seems to be happy with all the decisions he has made in his life. Choosing his father as his biggest influence is touching. It is wonderful he got to spend quality time with his father the last eight years of his life. A great read. Thanks again.

This is a dated but very interesting Hit Channel interview with Bernie from 2012. It looks like someone may have already posted it in this thread but the link is expired.

Thanks for posting this, and including some pertinent quotes in your post because as you've discovered inevitably, these links do expire!

It would be wonderful for Bernie to do another album. I won't hold my breath but stranger things have happened. After all, who'd have thought he'd tour again with the Eagles, yet he did! Heck, I'd love for him to be out and about doing ANYTHING in Nashville - as I've said, I'd happily drive the four hours to see him.

Side note: once again, a reporter tries to get him to diss a band member and/or grouse about his treatment, and once again Bernie refuses to take the bait. He is so awesome.

Thanks from me too, Delilah. It was fun to read that again. I also have an immense amount of respect for Bernie. By all accounts, he seems to be a stand-up, classy guy.

Thank you very much for posting this interview Delilah!
It makes me know Bernie Leadon a bit better: he seems to be a sentitive and intelligent man
I want to check out "Natural Progressions" and "Mirror" as soon as I can

Thank you, D! Bernie is such a mysterious and private cat, it's nice to hear a bit about his views and experiences.

You are most welcome, everyone. I love hearing from Mr. Leadon.

I do try to include quotes and/or other info in case the links no longer work. It can be frustrating to read comments about how great an article is only to discover it is no longer accessible. The Border may end up being the only documentation left of this kind of stuff.

It came up in Randy's forum that there was a small article published in the May 29, 2008 issue of Rolling Stone magazine about Bernie and Randy called 'The Forgotten Eagles'. It was an insert on the last page of the cover story published about the band after the release of Long Road Out of Eden. I posed Randy's piece in his thread. Here's the write-up on Bernie:

Bernie Leadon

INSTRUMENT Guitar YEARS IN BAND '71 - '75

CONTRIBUTIONS - Leadon co-wrote "Witchy Woman," the group's first Top 10 hit. A member of the Flying Burrito Brother, Leadon was responsible for the country-rock sound of the band's early records.

DEPARTURE - By 1975, Leadon was exhausted, "I wanted time off to regroup," he says today. "The others weren't excited about that." Tensions began to mount, and during a fight, he told Frey to "cool out" before dumping a beer on his head. Leadon quit soon after. "I don't regret it," he says.

WHERE IS HE NOW? - In 2004, he released Mirror, his first album in 27 years. "The Eagles' Greatest Hits goes platinum every year," he says., explaining why he feels little need to work. "I get royalties just like it was a new album." He's contemplating posting new music on his Website.

Thanks for posting that, Dreamer.

This recent article isn’t about Bernie (though he gets a mention), but his 38 year-old son Ian and the hemp product business he co-founded in Nashville.

Interesting! Did you see his colleague is the son of Amy Grant and thus Vince Gill's step-son?! Small world!

Yes, isn’t that a coincidence! There are so many inter-connections in the Eagles universe. From the pictures you can see Matt Chapman looks just like his mother. I was hoping there would be a picture of Ian, too.

In this interesting American Songwriter article, Bernie and Don Henley talk about what influenced them to create the music and lyrics for Witchy Woman https://americansongwriter.com/behind-the-song-the-eagles-witchy-woman/jlscott13gmail-com/

Always interesting to revisit the song's histories. I find myself reminded of things I'd forgotten, like the influence of Castaneda.

I've always loved that photo. I had no idea it was for a solo album that never got made!

Now, he says he's still writing songs. So, the question is... does he actually plan to do anything with them?

Let’s hope so. I get the impression that his concept of time is very... relaxed. It’ll happen when it happens. He may need some subtle nudging and guiding by a colleague or brother. I think he mentioned that his brother Tom lives nearby.

Nice interview.:-D Love this quote:

And here’s the other thing: I don’t think I’m done yet. I’m just like, “Wow, okay. I’ve had a really long career, but I’m not dead.” I’m still writing songs.

Nice interview. Would’ve loved to see when they reunited. Kick myself over this. Hopefully he will share some of those tunes he’s been writing. I agree Soda, awesome pic. Diltz is amazing at his craft.

This is an article from Uncut magazine dated December 2021, with some quotes from Bernie and Don Henley. Anyway, the mention of the power going out and the cold temps in London hit close to home with the freezing weather conditions here in my part of Texas (fortunately we still have power!).

February 1972. For these four Americans more used to the temperate Californian climate, London in the depths of winter was not the most propitious place to be. But the intense cold was not the only thing theEagles (https://www.uncut.co.uk/tag/eagles/) had to contend with while they recorded their debut album at Olympic Studios. As guitarist Bernie Leadon recalls, “We’re really close to getting this one cut – ‘Just one more, come on guys!’ We get it, the final note is struck, and right as that ring-out decayed into nothing, the power went off. The machines all stopped. We went into the control room, because the talkback had cut out. Our producer Glyn Johns said, ‘Well, we’ll just have to listen to it tomorrow…’ It was a blackout, due to the strikes.” Viewed from a distance of 50 years, the irony of the situation is not lost on Leadon.

Bernie also spoke about how even early on, they planned for contingencies:

We had what we called the LCD Show – Lowest Common Denominator. We rehearsed so that if two guys have flu and two of the others aren’t speaking, most of the audience wouldn’t know. I came to look at bands as entrepreneurial, young businesses. Consistency and discipline is a lot of how we succeeded.”

I just found this on Facebook a few minutes ago. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum hosted and interview Chris Hillman and Bernie to support the Western Edge exhibition. I posted a link to the pictures. I couldn't find any video from the event. I will check later on to see if they had recorded it. Good to see Bernie in these pictures.

I would love to see this exhibit. Too bad there isn’t video of the interview but at least Bernie was recognized for his contribution to the L.A. country rock sound. It would be interesting to know what either of them (Leadon and Hillman) said about Gram Parsons, if anything.

I’ve seen the exhibit twice and it’s fantastic. There are four rather lengthy videos (with some great interviews) featuring different facets of the country-rock movement as well as some fun interactive items. If I’m not mistaken, it’s going to be at the CMHOF until May 2025, so if you can make it to Nashville in the next year and a half, I highly recommend seeing it.
