I'm just catching up on a couple of these videos. That last one is awesome, ff. What a line up! Walk Away is cool as well. Do I get the impression he is lip-synching there?

03-21-2007, 09:07 PM
That is a great video. I don't think he's lip synching GEF. The timing may be off a bit, but it's so improvised that it would be hard to lip synch that, IMO.

I wonder if the reception of the video was poor? Perhaps discouraging him from doing it again? All of his other videos after this were comic: The Radio Song, In My Car, and Ordinary Average Guy.

Yeah JoeFan, but look at the types of songs those were. Is he supposed to do a serious video for In My Car? Ordinary Average Guy? That song talks about dog poop, haha. Maybe for The Radio Song he might have been able to do something that wasn't a big joke.

I don't think he's afraid to be serious because he wrote and performed One Day at a Time. Singing about your problems and cleaning up in front of an audience who has worshiped you as "Cool Party Guy Joe" takes big balls.

JoeFan
09-05-2007, 03:38 AM
Good point about the songs, Jack, and I agree that Joe has "big balls" as you put it. Since his new songs are rockers, I doubt they will be terribly intense, so we may not get a chance to hear more serious material from him on Long Road Out Of Eden. A bit early to tell, though, I realise that.

The Bomber
09-05-2007, 09:24 PM
You're probably right... but I'm still hoping for another intense rocker like Turn to Stone. Genius.

Here's a video of Joe doing Life in the Fast Lane in 1989:

Joe and the All-Starrs - Life in the Fast Lane (1989) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xImkQGTXLQ8)

Not exactly the best rendition of it! But the video quality is good.

And here's the James Gang doing Tend My Garden. It's a poor quality audience video, but unlike most, it has relatively good sound and the full song.

Actually, I agree JoeFan. I don't think that version of LITFL is bad at all. Joe rocked it! The only other time I've seen Joe do the song was during the Party of Two tours with Glenn in 1993, and I have to say, I wasn't too impressed. For one thing, Joe was pretty 'out of it' in the bootleg I saw. I also don't think it's a good thing for he and Glenn to share vocals because of the contrast of their voices. They harmonize well together, but Glenn's smooth, rich voice doesn't blend well enough with Joe's raw style for them to share vocals, IMHO.

Freypower
09-30-2007, 12:27 AM
And also in that version, unfortunately it sounded as if Glenn was 'taking over' from Joe because Joe couldn't - er - hack it. And I don't think that was the intention.

The Bomber

Watching the video of Life's Been Good took me back to the concerts that've gotten to attend on this tour. Even though i've seen them 4 times, it's never enough. And Rhonda, I apoligize for saying that because I know that you're still waiting. You're time will come. And once you get there, it will be well worth the wait.

Please tell me i wasn't the only one to rewind the "tell me Glenn's great" part. I had to rewind it once more....okay I did it 5 times but he was so darn cute on that part. I bet that lady lost her voice after all the screaming she did. I'll admit that I also did a lot of screaming at my first Eagles concert and I ended up losing my voice for nearly a week.

Oh my gosh! This is adorable! Here's the description, which gives some more info (including the fact that Glenn was there but there's no video! boo)

Joe Walsh steps into the batter's box, gets hit by a pitch, refuses to go to first base, then strokes a clean single to left. Joe then grants an interview in the dugout. It was sometime in the early to mid-90's, late March at Al Lang Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. It was an Old-Timers game at the waterfront stadium that was televised locally (on a really feeb channel). Hrabowski pitched and did his act (smoke bomb & wig) and a slew of other veterans played as well. Glenn Frey also played in that game (no video of him, though).

Well, I actually liked Slaughter back in the day, but this cover just doesn't do the original justice, IMHO. Part of the song's appeal is how rough and raw it is - all the extra layers of noise obscure that.

Pretty high quality. Also, check out Joe's extremely drunk interview at the end of the clip. He is LOADED.

OK, a quick question. Does anyone know of any recording in existence of Joe Walsh playing "The Radio Song" live? I've been hunting for that one with just no luck and I'm curious to see if he even played that one while promoting Got Any Gum in 1987-90 time period. Any info would help!

It is pretty amazing....but I have to remind myself that Joe did some of him most creative work when zoned out. A lot of artists did. For that matter, back in the late 60's and early 70's, a lot of non-artists achieved their most creative periods in that state of mind (or lack thereof).

It was like, I can't get up and find the door, but I can pick up a guitar and focus enough on it to do things with it that I'd never consider in a normal state of mind.

I'm not promoting that type lifestyle, but the fact is that there were a lot of artists who for various reasons, chose to indulge. Many times, it was just so that they could function for the long hours in a studio....The paid for it dearly later!

Not on any of the bootlegs I have from that era. It's always possible he played it at some point but it wasn't a regular part of his setlist to the best of my knowledge. Since it was a single, you'd think he'd have performed it, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Yeah! I love watch'n the YouTube videos of Joe live doen "Turn to Stone" & "The Bomber" footage from 1972.

I think The Drive does a great job.. especially you Steve!

I have a question. I'm specifically trying to find out if there are names to the jams that sometimes occur after a track has ended & faded out, then a few seconds go by, then a jam of about 6-8 seconds long will all of a sudden start playing before the entire track has finally ended. Take a listen to "At The Station" from "But Seriously Folks", and "Ordinary Average Guy" from the album with the same name. At the end of each song, after a few seconds of silence, a new song or jam will emerge and play for a few seconds, like 5-8 secs. before it finally fades and the whole track finally ends. CAN ANYONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS?? I'm looking to find out if these ending jams have any names too 'em, or if they're parts of other songs he's put down & recorded before. If you can help I'd sure appreciate it cause it's really been bug'n me for a while now. Well thanks for read'n.. -Christian

Welcome FB.

I'm a bit unsure how something which only lasts a few seconds could be called a 'jam'. It's just part of the track it follows.

Welcome from me, too! Since "Jam" is a loosely defined term I for one can understand why you use it.

Unfortunately, I don't know if they're named - sorry I can't be more helpful!

Back on topic: Sooner, your magic camera once again produces great results! Thanks for posting those!

I'm sure all of you have seen this already, but I just CAN'T stop watching it! It's pure genius... I don't think anyone can pull this off aside from Felder and Walsh  Amazing. Just. Amazing. As there has been slight controversy over where to post certain things, I feel I should clarify to avoid any discontent  Though Joe is performing with the Eagles in this video, it still is technically HIS song, so I decided to put it in Joe Videos. Now. If you will all excuse me while I go watch this video another 10,000 times  haha

That is an amazing video. I adore that song and hope to see it performed by the Eagles some day. You never know! They did it as recently as 2003, after all, and it's magnificent. I was hoping the Party of Two would do it but I can see what they didn't due to the abbreviated length of the set.

FYI - The way YouTube works, anyone could have it taken it down. Joe alone is the songwriter; however, in the land of YouTube, anyone can make a request to take down content regardless of whether or not it is copyrighted to that person. Once a complaint has been filed with YouTube, the burden is on the user to prove that he/she owns the copyright and if he/she cannot, the video comes down - whether it's reported by Joe Walsh or Aunt Fanny.

A little common sense goes a long way. You've done fine in the past.

:hilarious: LOL Soda, when I said that nobody can pull this off aside from them, I meant that Joe and Don are the only ones that can play a song like that so good. But thanks for the youtube info

LOL! Oops! How sad it is that when I read "pull this off" my brain went directly to pulling stuff off YouTube? At least my mistake was informative. ;)

Have to agree that the way Walsh and Felder play together can only be imitated, not exceeded (IMHO).

Seems to me the YouTube rules require that "under penalty of perjury" only the copyright owner or persons authorized by the owner can request something be removed: http://www.youtube.com/t/dmca_policy

And speaking of YouTube videos being removed, I discovered a website recently that allows you to download videos (so you can still have a copy after the copyright police have them removed): http://keepvid.com/ Works great on an iPod too! :-)

Apparently people do it anyway, as I have personally experienced with one video I uploaded. That was three years ago, though - maybe they're stricter on that now.

Now, here's a video for a song sung by Stevie Nicks but about Joe:

After some reading online it looks like this is from 2001. He and several others did ads (Wayne Newton, Charlie Daniels, Miss Piggy and Kermit, and George Thorogood according to what I've read) to encourage Dale Jarrett to race the UPS truck!

It's pretty funny! :hilarious:

That video is one where afterwards he and Gibson got into it. You can hear him talking about the strings at the end of the vid. The guitar was poorly set up and had strings installed wrong and it wasn't sounding good. So Joe didn't play any "new" Gibson's after that. The Gibson's Joe plays on Hell Freezes Over are all older ones. Gibson unfortunately had some severe quality control issues and some people wouldn't and some still won't buy a new Gibson guitar because they have had set-up issues and sometimes more serious things like badly installed frets, etc. It wasn't good. So I don't blame Joe one bit for not wanting to use them. You got to be able to "play" them and all. :D

It's a shame Gibson can't make guitars like they did in the 50's, with the original techniques and practices. They could if they wanted to because there are people making replica Les Paul's that sound almost the same as an original. I guarantee you if they did make them the "right" way they'd have a TON of business. Gibson's 50's reissue guitars are nothing like the originals. Now they are more interested in making guitars for bands like the Jonas Brothers or things like that and making "robot" guitars. It's a shame. :( And I don't blame any of their staff or workers, but I think Gibson's CEO is a joke. He's in it for the money, and he'll tell you when he bought the company he did so because he knew it would be a money-maker. That's ok, but at least care about what you are putting out there and listen to customer requests. Companies like Paul Reed Smith, Carvin, Fender, etc actually care about the guitar and the customer's requests. That's probably why we don't see Joe playing too many Gibson's these days. In fact, I haven't seen him play any lately.

Ok...rant over! :hilarious: I'm very passionate about guitars if you can't tell!
