HAPPY BIRTHDAY CATHY!!!

Okay, of course, I hope you have a wonderful birthday. I just don't know where to start with the 'gifts' so I'll try a little of young and old.

Here is one of my personal favs - it is so aptly named 'JWalshSmokinBod' on JoeWalshOnline ...

Here's the big guy getting ready to sing the birthday song to you ...

And then I figured I'd throw in a bit of Timothy from The Bitter End show in the Big Apple and let him sing to - just to kinda even things out, ya know ...

Okay Girly! here it is! Happy Birthday!!! Hope its a great one!

*********************************************
The coffee house smelled of espresso and warm milk. It was soothing but the place was beyond funky. Nancy had said it was a funky little coffee house near the airport, but Cathy had had no idea what funky had meant. In this case Cathy guessed it mean teleported straight from the 60’s into the ice laden streets of Indiana. Although the stone tiled floor and river rock fireplace gave a certain warmth and earthy feeling to the whole beatnik façade. She imagined it was also part of the reason the place was named On Solid Grounds. Cute, maybe a little tacky, but cute. She’d taken a table right in front of the fireplace and sipped at her cup of cappuccino, or should she say bowl since it was the size of a large chili bowl. Still, it was cinnamony and a touch of orange made it just a little sweet and it was warm and comforting. The weather had taken a bad turn and it was cold out, Indiana winter cold. Nancy had suggested meeting here during her layover and Cathy wasn’t sure Nancy would be able to make it. If the weather continued like this, she wasn’t sure SHE’D make it. She sighed deeply and sent up a silent prayer that the plane wouldn’t be grounded. When the old fashioned bell above the front door tinkled and a gust of cold wind blew through the café, Cathy glanced up hopefully. Nancy was just coming in, swallowed by a serious winter coat. She stomped her feet on the door mat and hung her coat on the coat rack beside the front counter. She looked back to the seating are around the fireplace and saw Cathy. She smiled and waved. Cathy waved back as Nancy made her way through the tables of beret covered beatnik wannabe’s to the warmth of the fireplace.
Cathy smile and stood to greet her friend.
“I am so glad you made it! I was worried when I saw the temperature drop!”
Nancy gave her friend a quick hug and sat across from her.
“I know! I was worried you might be stuck here for some time! Have you heard anything from the airport?”
Cathy flinched.
“Not yet, but they said they’d call me if there are any changes to the flights status.”
Nancy grimaced.
“Well, if worse comes to worse, you can come stay the night with me and we’ll make a night of it. Pizza, coke and a little HFO!”
Cathy giggled. “My favorite. Almost tempts me to forget the plane altogether!” Cathy took another long sip of her cappuccino as Nancy raised her eyebrows at her.
Cathy smiled over the mug. “Almost.”
Nancy laughed.
“I didn’t think you’d give up your LA experience or Joe Pilgrimage for some pizza.” Cathy grinned. “Nope, not even HFO can keep me here.”
She’d have to remember to send a lot of postcards home. Her husband had surprised her with round trip tickets to LA to see her sister in Pasadena. Her sister had promised her the “Full LA Experience” Cathy had plans too. She had a list of sites and venues she wanted to visit. Nancy had helped her put it together. It was her Eagles/Joe pilgrimage. From The Troubadour to Studio City to The Guitar Center in Sherman Oaks, it was a long list and each place having special meaning for the Eagles or Joe. She got chills just thinking about playing with the guitars Joe had played at The Guitar Center or sitting in the chairs Don or Glenn had occupied at the Sunset Grill. Seeing her sister and nieces would be a lot of fun but this list was the real reason she wanted to go to LA, well, that and to get out of the snow.
A skeletal-like woman with black tights, a black and white striped sweater that hung down to her thighs and a black beret carried a bowl of cappuccino to the table and set it in front of Nancy.
“Thanks.”
The young woman tilted her head to one side almost as if she didn’t have the energy to hold it up right and in one tired breath said, “yeah sure no problem. Let me know if you need anything else.” And was gone from the table before either Cathy of Nancy could answer.
The two women at together by the warmth of the fire discussing everything they had in common, The Eagles, Indiana, The Border, their friends from The Border and their excitement over Cathy’s LA trip. After some time had passed, Cathy began to check her watch. She wanted to leave herself enough time to get back to the airport and check in, when the tinny sounds of a familiar guitar riff drifted up from her coat pocket. Her cell phone was ringing. She looked at Nancy and her face went pale.
Nancy grimaced and bit her lip.
“It could be your husband or maybe your sister.”
Cathy groaned and picked up her phone. She listened to a prerecorded message. Then held it out for Nancy to head.
“Your flight has been delayed for and indeterminate amount of time due to weather conditions. Please check back with us in one hour.”
Cathy groaned and leaned back in her chair letting her head hang.
Nancy patted her hand trying to think of something comforting to say.
“Well, they did say to check back in a hour. Who knows? Maybe the weather will change.”
Cathy raised her head and looks blankly at her friend who shrugged.
“I know, but, it’s possible. Don’t give up.”
Both women glanced at the windows. The snow was falling thick and heavy and gathering at the window frames and door. It didn’t show any signs of stopping any time soon. Cathy sighed and laid her face down on the table, groaning.
Nancy sighed. Cathy was really devastated and she felt awful for her.
“look, an hour isn’t that long. We’ll just finish our drinks, they make great sandwiches here, we’ll order a sandwich and talk, then check again in an hour.”
Without lifting her head Cathy spoke into the table.
“Do they have chocolate cake? I really need chocolate cake.”
Nancy grinned. Chocolate saves the day one more time.
“The best chocolate cake ever. I’ll get two pieces. I could use some chocolate myself.”
She stood and made her way to the counter to order their cake.
Cathy sat up and put her head in her hands and stared down at her cup watching the small island of foam float freely in the brown liquid. She glanced up briefly when she heard the bell over the door ring and felt the gust of cold air. Two men had entered dressed in thick winter clothing. Coats, hats and scarves hid any features as they stomped the snow off their boots. Cathy returned to watching the foam island when she heard Nancy’s voice excited and animated. She glanced back up and one of the men had an arm around her and she was smiling broadly and talking fast. “Small world.” Thought Cathy. “Must be someone she knows from school.” And she stirred her drink.
Nancy returned to the table with two plates covered with enormous slices of the richest darkest cake Cathy had ever seen.
“Have I got a surprise for you!” Nancy was vibrating with excitement.
“It’s that good? I mean it LOOKS great, but it’s just cake.”
Cathy took one of the pieces and stabbed it with her fork. She lifted a frosting laden bite to her mouth and slipped it in.
“No! that’s not what I mean. I mean…” Nancy was cut short by the arrival of the two men at their table. Cathy still had the fork in her mouth.
“Excuse me, Ladies. May we join you? We’re pretty chilled from the snow and you’re so close to the fire here…” Cathy looked up into two of the deepest blue eyes she’d ever seen and nearly choked. It was Glenn Frey! He was HERE! And he wasn’t alone. Glenn Sat next to Nancy and the other man stood by Cathy patting her on the back as she attempted to swallow the cake she was choking on.
“You okay?”
She looked up at the man patting her back and nearly choked again. It was Joe Walsh. THE Joe Walsh, The man she was headed to LA to stalk (or so said her husband).
“uh, yeah, I'm fine, hi.” Was about all she could manage. Joe grinned down at her and she could feel the blush starting in her toes and work its way up her body till she was sure the tips of her hair were starting to redden slightly.
“You mind if I sit with ya?”
It took Cathy a moment to understand he was talking to her and another for her to float around a while. HE was talking to HER!
“Oh, yeah, sure, please.” She pulled the chair out and he smiled back at her and sat.
Nancy looked at Cathy and her eyes widened. Cathy watched her. Something was wrong but she wasn’t sure she could interpret her looks and gestures. Nancy looked at her flatly and licked the side of her mouth. That’s when it hit Cathy. There was a large chunk of chocolate frosting on her mouth. Great. She nonchalantly brushed the edge of her mouth and came away with a long chocolate smear. It was getting worse. Nancy cringed and put her finger to the corner of her mouth. Cathy picked up her napkin and dabbed at it but Nancy shook her head. Cathy was mortified.
“Can I help?”
Cathy turned at Joe’s voice and he was watching her with a napkin in his hand. She smiled and he held her chin and dabbed at the corner of her mouth.
“There, beautiful.” Joe smiled warmly back at her.
Cathy mumbled a weak “thanks” and smiled back but felt it was more of a kind grimace then a smile.
Nancy pulled her stare from Cathy and Joe’s interaction and asked Glenn,
“So what are you guys doing here?”
Glenn made a face and, doing a not bad imitation of Humphrey Bogart, said,
“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world and they had to walk into mine.” Nancy and Cathy laughed but Joe just shook his head.
“That was terrible, awful. Was that supposed to be Bogy? Or Ingrid Bergman?” A slight teasing grin tickled the corners of Joe’s mouth.
“You think you can do better?” Glenn raised his eye brows at his friend.
“I think my Grandma could do better.” Joe said tapping a fork on the table.
Glenn grinned wide. This was going to be fun. “Okay, lets hear it.”
Joe raised his eye brows at Glenn, “Really? You want to do this? You’re ready to face this much humiliation in front of two beautiful women.”
Glenn shook his head and looked at Nancy. “Yeah see, he’s all talk and no action.”
Joe set the fork down and sat up. “Okay okay, you want a Bog-off we’ll have a Bog-off. The first annual Indiana Bog-off.” He cleared his throat and turned to Cathy. He quirked his mouth sideways “Here’s lookin at you, kid.” And he tapped Cathy on the chin.
Cathy and Nancy both applauded but Glenn just shook his head.
“What was that? I thought we were doing Bogy?”
The next hour was spent with dueling Bogies, back and forth, quoting every Bogart movie ever made. They had the ladies laughing so hard tears were running down their cheeks. Even when they ran out of movie quotes, Bogy seemed to find its way back into their conversation.
“So you never answered my question. What brings you two here?” Nancy took advantage of a lull in the conversation.
Glenn smiled at her and Bogied back “Ahh She’s a tough one. Wont take Bogy for an answer.” And he grinned. “Ahh, it’s not big deal. Our plane was grounded. This place is pretty quiet and out of the way and most of all, warm.”
Nancy smiled and nodded. “but what are you doing in Indiana in the first place.”
Glenn leaned his head back in understanding.
“We had a Party of Two show in Indianapolis last night.”
“Oh really? I hadn’t heard. How’d it go?” Nancy was proud of the fact that she kept her ear to the ground and usually knew of any and all up coming shows, private or not. This one had escaped her.
“Schwell, Schweetheart!” Joe fell back into the Bogy accent making Cathy chuckle. “What brings a schweet kid like you into a place like this?”
Cathy smiled. She was much more relaxed around the two men now. Their goofy antics and friendly manners made her feel a part of the group.
“A plane, or lack of really. I was supposed to be flying to LA tonight but my plane was ‘indeterminately delayed’ so I'm waiting and Nancy is keeping me company.”
Everyone turned to Nancy who was sitting and listening. She looked around a little surprised to find everyone’s attention was on her.
“Oh, I live near here. I told Cathy I’d keep her company during her lay-over. We didn’t know it would be quite so long.”
Glenn smiled at her. “That was very thoughtful of you.”
Nancy blushed a little and shrugged. “What are friends for?”
Joe turned back to Cathy. “What were your plans in LA? Business or pleasure?”
Cathy grinned. “Pleasure.” She blushed a little too. Joe was the reason she was going to LA and the idea of Joe and pleasure in the same sentence, let a lone the same thought, well, she blushed. “I'm going to see my sister and her family in Pasadena. She promised me ‘the full LA Experience.’ I'm not sure what that includes but I have my own plans anyway.”
Joe smiled and took a drink of his cooling cappuccino. “And what would those be?”
Cathy still couldn’t look at him. “I have a list of places I want to see.”
Joe looked interested now. “Oh really? What places would you like to see?”
Cathy looked up at Nancy, she was smiling at her. Cathy had backed herself into a corner now and she was going to have to fess up.
“Umm… Nancy and I kind of put together … well, an Eagles Pilgrimage of Los Angeles. Its just a lot of places that are pertinent to The Eagles, and I added some of my own places.” She looked at Joe. He was looking back at her with interest now.
“Really? Can I see the list?”
Cathy bit her lip in hesitation and reached in her coat pocket.
“Uh, sure.” She pulled out a folded piece of paper and handed it to Joe.
“I gotta see this.” Glenn hopped up to look over Joe’s shoulder at the list.
The two laughed and pointed at things on the list.
“Guitar Center? What’s that about?” Glenn looked questioningly at Nancy.
“That’d be me.” Joe said still looking at the list.
“Oh right!” Glenn perused the list again, both men making comments about different places.
“That’s a great and really thorough list. You two did your research.” Glenn said, still standing behind Joe.
“It is.” Joe grinned at Cathy. “Let me add just one more site though. You really shouldn’t miss it.” He took a pen from his coat pocket and started to write something at the bottom of the list.
A man in a black suit coat came to the table just then.
“Mr. Frey, Mr. Walsh, The airport just called and your plane has been cleared for take off. We need to return to the airport as soon as possible.”
Both men looked up.
“Right!” Glenn stepped to the other side of the table to gather his things. He hugged Nancy and kissed her cheek. “Thanks, Nancy. I think this wait would have been pretty intolerable without you.”
Nancy beamed, unable to say much else then “See ya.”
Joe hugged Cathy and kissed her cheek. He leaned back slipping on a pair of aviator glasses.
“Schtay cool, Schweetheart.” And he gently chucked her chin. In a moment both men were gone. Nancy and Cathy sat looking a little stunned. Cathy reached for her list anxious to see what Joe had added when her phone rang.
The familiar recorded voice came on “Your delayed flight has been approved for take off. Please return to the airport. Boarding will commence in one hour.”
“I’ve got to go! The plane’s ready!” Cathy scooped up the list and looked at it as she slipped on her coat, then froze.
“Oh my God, Nancy. Look!” she handed Nancy the list.
At the bottom of the list of must see place in Los Angeles was written in blue ink ‘Joe’s Place’ then a 10 digit phone number and ‘call me when you get in, we’ll do lunch, Joe.’
Nancy gasped.
Cathy grinned and slipped on her coat.
“I think LA might be a lot more fun then I thought!”
