Ok, I follow Soda's suggestion and start his own thread. Meanwhile you all sure know I'm a huge fan of his music and I think he's one of the greatest guitar player. And.... not to forget his good looking, but that's a matter of taste.

My first contribution to this thread is a 5-part interview. Maybe you will enjoy listening to him like I did.

Great, Ef!

By the way, are you a member of Monkeyville?

EasyFeeling
01-04-2007, 05:16 PM
No Brooke, I'm not. It's not for free and I don't have a paypal account or something like that. And I don't have the time doing the same thing with Keith I'm busy enough with the Eagles message boards. I know if you are a member of Monkeyville you will get special things like M&G but how would that work for me? I live in the wrong country, that's for sure!

Brooke

Yeah, I'm kinda bummed that they started charging for that. I'm not a member either and like you, really don't have time for another board. :(

Thanks for those links, EF. You guys are right, he's fabulous live!

Maleah

Here are some of my favorite youtube Keith videos. Most of them aren't live, but still great!

He looks better with long hair, but I love "Where The Blacktop Ends" He really spices up the guitar to this live, it's pretty awesome!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uS1lJhhVoQ

"Days Go By" is probably my second favorite Keith song! INCREDIBLE live! He started out the concert here with this song and it was smokin'! And, well......he looks really hot in the video :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-DbE0oFnFY

My very favorite Keith song...."Somebody Like You." I love the guitar solo's on this song (even more so live of course lol). This was his last encore at the concert I went to.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-APWkYu_10

The sound quality is really bad on this, but it's live and it's amazing live! "Jeans On" We were a little worried he wasn't going to perform this one, it's my niece's fav. song. But he did it as an encore as well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvo99jTX70U

"stupid boy" (the official video apparently)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNDPxaqU3Uk

and of course I love when a musician has multiple music talents. :D At my concert, he played acoustic, electric, banjo, keyboards/piano, and drums. His band is amazing! The guy that's singing in this clip and his bassist have fantastic voices!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjSIDWx34G0

AND..last but, well yeah....least....lol.......are these incredibly short clips. (Like less than 30 seconds short! lol) Why do I share them? Because even though they are incredibly short, and for some reason this girl turned her phone or whatever, sideways............they are from the one and only keith Urban concert I attended. So view....and be jealous of the view that I saw :D :D :D :D :D This first clip I remember thinking, his guitar playing on this particular song was the best I've ever heard live! Incredible! One of the best I've ever heard anywhere, live or not actually.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HezLe_46FLQ

(how hot is he here? :D :D)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD_g65n-4yo

(This was him swinging across the audience as he went to the smaller stage to get closer to me  )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1dUP5Qg-9Q

*sigh* T-shirt and jeans have never looked so good :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Em9DSPrPL4s

He did a lot of extra guitar solos in pretty much every song!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFnB3qSo44g

oh wow........this is a really long post for being just about videos and Keith!!! If you've stuck with me this far, I'm proud of you! :D (Hi EF *WAVES* )

last but not least.......so NOT twangy :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Em9DSPrPL4s

*cough* er.....yes.......I love Keith. Is this where the 12 step program starts?

(Hi EF *WAVES* )

:bluewave:

Wow Maleah, this is so cool. :D I didn't dare to post so many videos because I didn't want people getting overload.

I saw most of these videos while looking for some yesterday. He's so damned good, especially in that short sideways clip.
And you actually found a video with my favourite song YLGIMS  I was looking for this for hours and couldn't find it. Love it when he rolls his shoulders it's so freaking sexy. 8) :smitten:

"Where The Blacktop Ends" He really spices up the guitar to this live, it's pretty awesome!

Uh, I forgot... isn't it great in the DVD, when he's shoving through the crowd during that guitar solo and the girls hug him? I love to see him so close to his fans. It's amazing he's taking photos and scribbling autographs while singing.

Found another fantastic performance of a song which I've never heard before, It's A Love Thing (acoustic) :D

Wow! Thanks Maleah! Those are great!

Btw, remember when Keith first hit it big with By the Grace of God and he was with just a three piece band? Anybody know what happened with that? There was a girl in it. That's where he first caught my eye, and ear! But his band now is much better anyway, imo! :D

Maleah
01-05-2007, 11:24 AM
yeah I do remember that Brooke! That was, and still is, one of my very favorite Keith songs. He still performs it in concert, but at ours he performed it acoustic. It was really, really good!

I'm not sure what happened with that band. That caught my eye in the video too. But his band right now is amazing! I would say probably the best one I've heard.

EasyFeeling
01-05-2007, 12:54 PM
When you say he performed it acoustic do you mean he did it similar to the DVD version? I like it much more than the studio version. :D
Oh, I'm really looking forward to Jan. 20. Then he will do his first gig on German TV to promote the new single. :D

Where The Black Top Ends, acoustic. Could listen to him for hours. :)

While I was waiting in the doctor's office for my prescription to be filled today, I picked up an old People Magazine on their table. It was from November and featured Keith Urban! Since you guys have piqued my i nterest in him, I read it. The way they described his relationship with Nicole Kidman was very sweet, and the article was very positive, commending Keith for the strength of character to choose to go to rehab. It was really nice.

I also discovered Keith and Nicole went to Lindsey Buckingham's Nashville show. I had several friends who went to that, including our own PinkCoatLady. So cool! He has great taste in artists.

EasyFeeling
01-16-2007, 12:25 PM
Yes, I can imagine how hard it is going to rehab since my brother was addicted to drugs. I think he does it in order to maintain his marriage. But to be honest I really doubt their marriage will last long.
I wish him all the best he's such a great guy.
BTW, it has been said he will come to Germany for at least 3 shows in April/May, yay :D :D Now I'm waiting for the tour dates. I guess they will announce them next week at the latest. I'm so excited. :D
Meanwhile I'm looking forward to Saturday when he appears in a game show in German TV for the first time to promote his new single/album. I hope he confirms the tour in that show.

EasyFeeling
01-17-2007, 10:04 AM
OMG OMG I can't believe it. The tour dates for Keith in Germany were confirmed!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D Tickets go on sale on Friday. I'm going to go to the Hamburg show on April 22. How cool is that? I'm so happy, woooooooooohoooooo!!
He will play in Hamburg in a small and cosy venue so I will get to see him very close.

For anyone who's interested he will also play in the UK in April.
Wow, this is all so exciting...

I had to post this great news twice, here and on TLR.

Yes, I was hoping he will play in a small venue. I love it when it's more personal. Now I need to do copies of his albums for my best friend. She doesn't know the songs very well and I want her to sing along with the songs.

01-21-2007, 01:21 PM
I don't know if anyone is interested in this, but here are the news:

I saw Keith Urban in our TV show yesterday. I don't know what to say.... it was soooooooooooo great. He does look a bit different now, with shorter hair, love it. A few people from his German fansite were there and had a banner with the URL on it. You can't imagine what was going on on the site after the show. The server was broken because so many people wanted to get in.
There is also an interview in which he talks a bit of himself. What a cutie...

http://www.zdf.de/ZDFde/inhalt/24/0,1872,4337176,00.html

This is crazy. Since he had his appearance yesterday the German message board explodes with new members. I also registered there. And this is amazing: In the charts on amazon.de the new album changed the position from 232 up to 5. 3 other albums went up immediately afterwards. What is this called? Winner of the Week or so? Unbelievable...

The ticket sales run so fast they are considering either to change the venues or to make additional concerts.

Yes, he's going to be very successful here in Germany since his appearance in the German TV. Meanwhile all 3 concerts are sold out and unfortunately there is no chance to add some shows because of his strong schedule. But I've heard about a rumor he will add some shows here in fall. :D Hopefully this will happen. It would be great to see him twice.

For Maleah and Brooke and those who may interested to listen to the broadcasting of Keith in Hamburg lately I wanted to post a link to the download of the software which I use to tape from radio stations all over the world.

The download site is in German but I think it should be easy to know what you need to do.
The Screamer Radio is easy to use. You have to look for the German station NDR2. Save it and make sure you activated the mp3 converter. The concert starts at 9 pm German time on Monday, June 4. Should be 3 pm in the US but I don't know.

Maleah and Brooke, in case this doesn't work for you I will send you a copy of the concert as promised.

http://www.freeware.de/suche/?param_search_string=Screamer+Radio

Dreamer, this is your chance.

Ok, Ef, I got the screamer downloaded. Now, how do I get the station recorded to it?

I have to tell you that concert is postponed again. They said Keith wants to adapt it before. I'll keep you informed about the new date. Probably on July 9.
Instead of that they broadcast the concert in Hamburg from 2005 which is fine for me too. I already have that on CD but for you it's great. So you get two concerts of him.

Have you find NDR2? Go to "presets" and search by region. Then go to "file" and "save favourites" Then go to "settings" - "preferences" and activate "Encode Ogg Vorbis as mp3" under Recording 2. Say ok and then go to "Recording" and deactivate "Single Track Mode".
This is when you want a break between every single song. When it's activated I don't know if it would stop after the first song. That's not what we want, eh?
And finally... press the REC button. Hope this helps. I had to change the language to English to give you these instructions.

Set list for today:

Days Gone By 3.48
Raining On Sunday 5.42
She's Gotta Be 6.04
Making Memories Of Us 4.08
You're Not Alone 3.24
You 5.57
You'll Think Of Me 6.01
Somebody Like You 5.41
Better Life

I've listened to that concert today in my car and repeated She's Gotta Be 10 times at least. At the end of the song there's an awesome guitar playing from Keith, it's brilliant. :D Therefore I'm glad you get to hear that concert.

Edited to add: It's not She's Gotta Be, it's You. I'm a bit confused today.

Today I found an awesome review of one of his recent shows. Seems he's going to get a worthy successor for the Eagles. Of course no one would ever replace our band.

Who will be the next batch of classic rock acts to fill arenas, amphitheaters and even stadiums in the decades to come after the Rolling Stones, the Eagles and Jimmy Buffett finally call it quits?

Don’t look to the pop music world for answers. Instead _ as odd as it may initially sound _ the next crop is far more likely to come from the so-called “new country” genre.

The transition is already happening. Kenny Chesney has fashioned himself in Buffett’s mold. Rascal Flatts has charted an Eagles course. Toby Keith has sunk some Cougar-like claws into John Mellencamp territory.

And then there is Keith Urban, the platinum-selling cowboy who performs on Friday at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. More than any other current country act, the 39-year-old New Zealander is greedily borrowing from the Stones and other golden sources to fashion a lengthy, classic rock-style career.

Granted, Urban doesn’t technically play rock ‘n’ roll. But what he does play _ as well as what Chesney, Big & Rich and many others of their ilk perform _ sure sounds a lot more like classic rock than what most young pop bands churn out.

That definitely was the case during Urban’s concert on Tuesday night at Arco Arena in Sacramento. The things that separated Urban’s performance from what commonly goes down at an arena rock show could’ve been fit into one mighty small Stetson hat _ that is, if you could’ve found a Stetson, since there were no cowboy hats onstage and few to be seen in the audience.

Following an opening set by the Wreckers _ the fine band led by the vocal duo of Michelle Branch and Jessica Harp _ Urban and his five-piece crew kicked off the main event with a rousing rendition of “Once in a Lifetime.”

A few minutes into that tune _ which also opens the singer’s latest CD, last year’s “Love, Pain and the Whole Crazy Thing” _ the group ventured into a space that was far more Motley Crue than Merle Haggard. The musicians even looked the part, with the shaggy-haired bandleader bending over and wailing away on his electric guitar in front of a bald Billy Corgan-look-alike coolly plucking bass.

But it’s not just the look and the sound that conjures up thoughts of acts like the Stones. Equally important, it’s all the other things that Urban does that seem so very much in line with the current classic rock crew. Of course, he’s married to a movie star (Nicole Kidman, who did not make it out to Sacramento) and recently went to rehab (a three-month stint at the Betty Ford Center) _ both of which help his rock cred.

He also embraces showmanship and spectacle in his live show. He doesn’t just play Lynyrd Skynyrd-worthy guitar solos _ he plays them with gusto, dropping to one knee to emphasis a particularly poignant note or taking a well-timed break to slap hands with crowd members. Even his stage setup, which featured a long catwalk that connected the main stage to a smaller one in the back of the arena, seemed straight from a Rolling Stones’ past-tours garage sale.

Urban, who has only been a star of note since 2000, paces his show like a 30-year veteran of the touring business. He mixes the right amount of fast numbers (such as “Where the Blacktop Ends” from 1999’s “Keith Urban”) with the proper dose of romantic ballads (like the new album’s “I Can’t Stop Loving You”).

He also provides enough changes _ moving to a solo acoustic setting for an intimate “Raining on Sunday” from 2002’s `Golden Road,” carrying out a campfire-style sing-along from the secondary stage on the same album’s “You’ll Think of Me” _ to keep things intriguing.

The twists and turns come naturally, and always appropriately, as if Urban is reading fans’ minds to find out exactly what they want to hear next as well as how they want to hear it. Fans experience the same thing when they go see a Bruce Springsteen or Bob Seger show.

He brought Tuesday’s main set to a close with a mix of tender love ballads that had the ladies squealing (notably “Tonight I Wanna Cry” from 2004’s “Be Here”) and rowdy numbers that had fans waving Sabbath-style devil fists in the air (especially during the “Be Here”-track “Days Go By”).

As part of his encore, Urban conducted the crowd in what he dubbed a cell phone wave. That was a new one on this concert critic _ watching thousands of fans carry out a sports-style wave while holding their lit phones in an otherwise dark arena. At the end of which, Urban smiled broadly and playfully announced:

“Lighting brought to you by Nokia.”

And with that, Urban had hit upon the final ingredient for lasting success in the classic rock realm: Corporate sponsorship.

Remember the rock writer Bob Lefsetz, who loves the Eagles and Don? I subscribe to his emails, and he loves Keith too. He wrote a lengthy review about how much he enjoyed his show at the Staples Center, and here is one quote from it that made me laugh:

"Keith picked up a poster that said the holder would let him kiss his wife if Keith would let him kiss his, and then, after laughing, Keith ran into the audience and kissed the guy's significant other. And upon returning to his stool, Keith leaned into the mic and said GOOD LUCK EXECUTING YOUR PART OF THE DEAL!"

Keith did it.

http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l76/elafo/St.jpg

This is what the girl has written about THAT moment:

I was at the St. Louis concert last night and my husband held up the poster, "Hey Mate, Slap some sweat on me so my wife will REALLY want ME"! It caught Keith's eye and his witty sense of humor! He procedded to slap my husband's hand then laid down on the catwalk in front of me for a picture! OH MY!!!! I wrapped my arms around his sweaty chest and kissed his sweaty face several times! It was pure magic! I didn't want the moment to end! I simply adore Keith for his genuine and sincere heart and for my precious husband giving me this "once in a lifetime" gift!!! If anyone was at the concert last night and got a picture of this awesome experience, would you please email me? I need proof to show our five chidren that this actually happened to their mom!I'd really appreiate it!!!!!

By the way, Keith was in stellar form last night! I didn't even notice he had a cold. He put on a fabulous show!! My husband and I both agree that Keith is a wonderful and talented musician, but it is more about Keith: the man. He is a genuine, loving, sincere and giving person. This makes him him so special and unique. He is an aweome human being!

Ive always been a dreamer

Brooke, time is 9 pm German time. Hope you can make it!

I have sad news and I'm very disappointed. Keith's fall tour in the UK and Germany has been cancelled. Schedule problems are supposed to be the reason but I don't believe it. His management said he's so successful in the US so they want to add some shows and the European dates don't fit into their plans. Probably he will come in 2008 when his new album is released. That's the official excuse.

What I believe is the ticket sales went not good because he already was in Germany this year and the promotion for the tour really is bad. And... the venues are way too large with abt. 6000 people since he isn't well-known in Germany yet.
After discussing the situation in our Keith board we came to the result the German management almost made everything wrong to get Keith more known here.

Ok, when he comes in 2008 with songs from the new album it's fine with me. That comforts me a bit.

Have you seen him? Great performance, especially the first song with Alicia Keys. I know he had voice problems lately and you could hear it now and then. Too many concerts I guess.

When Al Gore announced him our stupid channel took a break for commercials and then switched over to London to the Beastie Boys.  So I only saw him doing the last song I Told You So. But I was lucky I could download the entire performance off our forum. :D

After listening to Keith together with Brooke and RG yesterday I wanted to post this. It's the most beautiful essay I've ever read and probably the best what a fan has written about feelings for a singer or a band.
I just copied it.

Hi!
I am posting an essay that a fellow Keith Urban fan wrote for one of her classes. This is one of the most incredible pieces of writing I have seen. I have no doubt that many of you will smile and nod your head as you read this essay. I know for a fact that many Keith Urban fans have teared up while reading this - filled with joy, awe and, perhaps, relief that they are not alone in their feelings. Julie wrote this essay and, in my opinion, certainly has put to words what many of us feel.

Oh yeah - and her description of Keith's guitar playing is...well, let's just say it is graphic and nearly as hot as his actual performance!

When you share this, all I ask is that you give credit to Julie. This is her creation and a gift too beautiful not to share.

One more thing - it is LONG. Very long, but soooo worth the read. So get a refreshing beverage, put the kids to bed and have the hubby take the dog for a walk.

Julie, thank you for such an insightful and loving description of "our obsession". You have given us "Monkeys" a very special gift with your words - and I don't know what grade you got on your essay - but you get an A++++++ from me!

Assignment: 2nd long essay

CHASING KEITH URBAN

On that hot August night in Wallingford, CT, I felt about to hyperventilate when the two deepest blues eyes on the planet turned my way. His smile started slowly, with the right side of his lips raising and spreading across to the left until it was so wide it made creases on either side of that luscious mouth. He had been working hard and was drenched in sweat, with that thick, straight mane of honey blond hair sticking tightly to the back of his neck. As he stood over me, his slightly crooked smile radiating an intense pleasure and directed straight at me, I could feel a light spray of sweat every time he shook his head and could see the droplets shine in the lights behind him. His slim hips were so fluidly but forcefully rockin’ to the rhythm, thrusting first forward then side to side. The thin, hole-filled t-shirt stretching tightly across his chest read “Thank God I’m a Country Boy.” I sent up my own oblation that he was, too. Exercising great restraint, I simply stared at the familiar scuffed brown Frye motorcycle boots beating time 18 inches in front of me instead of reaching out to grab them – and all to which they were attached (my first inclination). What had made me – a relatively sane, responsible, and highly educated woman – during the summer of my 20th wedding anniversary leave behind a husband and two teenage kids to follow across the country this man standing above me?

I live a life that makes sense. I am almost 50 years old. I have a Ph.d in rhetoric. I have walls and walls of books on religion, cosmology, existentialism, Greek textbooks and lexicons, American cultural values, language theory, and 20th century politics. I have spent a lifetime reading Russian, English, Irish, American, and French literature. I have researched and written and published on how we reason together about conflicting values. I have run college freshman writing programs and Sunday School programs. I have contributed articles to academic encyclopedias. I have traveled the world. I have actually trained my dogs to sit, stay, come, leave it, wait, fetch, and not jump at the door. I have adopted two grade-school age children from Russia and raised them to young adulthood. I make plans and lists and checkmarks. I have battled the State Board of Education and high school athletic association when I saw injustice. I don’t give in just because my daughter says “Everyone is doing it” or “Nobody’s parents does it.”

And I chase country-rocker Keith Urban across the country and across the globe. Between November 2004 and the end of 2007 I will have seen him in concert at least 30 times (there’s always the potential of more shows being added to my list, compared to a friend with over 100 under her belt), including shows all over the U.S., in England, and in Germany. I’ve driven a thousand miles in one day to get to a concert. I no longer tally the amount of money I’ve spent on hotels, food, transportation, and tickets – always more tickets as I head to a performance sometimes with three in hand because I don’t know which will be the best seat for making more photographs to add to the thousands and thousands already stored in my iPhoto file. And I am not alone.

“Groupie.” Yes, you can say it. Believe me, I’ve heard it spoken with disdain by my sisters and with bemusement by neighbors and others. However, they are wrong. This is no “Almost Famous” tale of debauchery and playing the country concert ‘ho’ role in an attempt to get on the bus. It’s no second childhood or escape from a dying marriage or a hormonally induced obsession that will send my family into financial ruin. It’s a tale of passion and friendship and adventure and a tribe of women discovering who they are at their second stage of adulthood. But when I mention to someone outside of all of this that I am flying to England to sit on a sidewalk in a queue for 8 hours and stand inside the unairconditioned basement club – sardined with a couple of thousand newfound friends – for another four to see a stripped-down concert that costs £20 when the same artist will be in my hometown a few months later at the airconditioned arena with video screens, laser lights, and assigned seating for 15,000, well, they don’t have time to listen to the expla-nation so I just stop telling anyone what I’m doing. I pack my bags and disappear for a few days and then slip back into town and continue with my life.

The guitar line starts to build as he steps into a “cage” of blue spotlights. He plants his feet wide and begins slowly to arch his back, the muscles in his quadriceps straining through the Levi’s after a thousand concerts striking this exact same pose. His amber and black [TELE BRAND?] display glints of hundreds of fingerprints from two hours of manhandling the instrument. Don’t ya’ know, nobody drinks alone. Every demon, every ghost from your past, every memory you’ve held back follows you home. After speaking the truth with his words he is poised to pour out his soul with his music. A few simple sustained notes cry in a quiet anguish as he closes his eyes and his shoulders sway with the music. The notes come a little more quickly with a “wah wah” as the anguish turns into a torrent of emotion. His fingers crawl up the fingerboard, then back, then up a little farther, continuing until they are over the body of the instrument, slamming down with a precise anger. He leans forward into his guitar, which by now is an extension of his body rather than something separate. All I can think at this moment is one woman’s apt description, “Y’all better close your eyes ‘cause Keith’s gonna make love to me right now!” And he begins. He works the neck of his guitar like he would work a woman, the fingers covering every inch, speeding up, slowing down, then moving so quickly they become a blur. He leans into his musical partner, pulls it up higher on his torso, then starts pounding the floor with his left foot. So skillfully and almost indecently, he is playing this solo for each individual woman in the arena. At some point the pounding leg lifts so high that it throws him back. With his head whipping from side to side and his hair flipping in a fury, he starts his backbend. Eyes closed, oblivious to the presence of the thousands of other people in the room, he slowly arches back farther . . . farther . . . until almost parallel to the floor. The momentary view for those in the front row is the stuff of dreams. Wailin’ on the Tele, he starts shredding the strings like a man possessed and trying to escape his demons. Throwing his head back, he displays an ecstasy usually reserved for more private moments. But it is a private moment because for every woman in that room they are alone. They are riding this wave of energy together. His right hand nothing more than a blur, his face completely obscured by a curtain of hair and the cage of lights now flashing in a blue lightning storm, he jackhammers his leg until he is in an upright position again and digs into the guitar, striking and pulling the strings with a vengence as he jerks the guitar up high with each chord. His shoulders lunge forward, coiling for a final burst. With an unexpected rush he runs the pick to the end of the fingerboard and back. Excised of all his ghosts and demons (at least for one night), he assumes his stance for one last backbend, then throws himself forward again, hanging over the guitar for two deliberate final chords. And he stays there momentarily . . . spent. And the feeling is mutual for the audience.

Most of us never have moments of transcendence. Our lives are not about passion but about routine or daily crisis management. We don’t seek passion as much as to check things off on our “to do” list. When people hear I travel to all of the Keith shows, their first question is always “But aren’t they all the same? Why do you need to do so many?” That’s like asking “Why go hear that Beethoven symphony again? Didn’t you already hear it once this year?” or “Why go to the museum again? They haven’t really changed the paintings, have they?” A Keith concert brings us to that same point. It lifts its audience out of the world and takes us on a ride to someplace better.

“There was a shot of adrenaline, an excitement, all too often absent [from concerts]. And all there was was this one guy, smiling, playing his axe, sans dance steps, sans backing tracks. . . . There was no attitude. The music spoke for itself. We were all enthralled by, in service to, the music.” Bob Lefsetz, Southern California music industry insider, had barely heard of Keith Urban, never attended a show before, and was definitely not a country music fan. And he had an immediate “Urban conversion” from the first note of the show he attended in Phoenix. He understood. Too often people want to focus on the fact that Keith concerts are heavy on the female demographic because he is the most gorgeous human being on the planet – so says country legend Dolly Parton, People magazine’s sexiest men issue, and Playgirl magazine, which found his layout its most popular in the first five years of the 21st century (. . . and on the eighth day God created Keith Urban). However, his music has the beauty of a Renoir and the passion of a Van Gogh.

A master musical artist, he can change his performance on a dime. One night you hear “But For the Grace of God” played on his golden electric Les Paul, and a month later he’s slowed the tempo to do it without the band and on his Maton acoustic. “You’ll Think of Me” was lauded when first released as the sweetest, most loving kiss-off song ever recorded. By the time he got through with it, however, he had infused it instead with anger. Concert by concert he changed a word here, a phrase there, until “some day I’m gonna run across your mind/but don’t worry I’ll be fine/I’m gonna be alright” morphed into “I bet you’ll think about me . . ./in fact, I’ll feel a hell of a lot better/Some day when you’re lyin’ alone in the middle of the night/wishin’ I was there to hold you tight/Well I ain’t never comin’ home/You shouldn’t have treated me this way” – as he spits out each syllable with the bitterness that comes from deep in the gut, foot pounding the stage, hair flying around his head, neck muscles straining, anger spewing from the guitar, and then utter exhaustion as he sits there dazed before coming back to us and back to himself when it’s over. Then a minute after finishing that invective, he turns the concert arena into a tent revival show with “You Won,” a song of redemption and release that could be about love or something higher: “I thought I knew what I was doing, I thought I was in control/I thought nobody’s gonna tie me down” with his bandmates repeating the chorus mantra “ready to fall” in the background. He speaks for all of us as he continues, “I was just a kid, a motherless child; no one to watch over me, I was running wild.” At that point he has thousands of people, hands overhead clapping and singing “Ready to fall” with equal conviction as he sings “Are you with me tonight? Are you with me St. Louis?” Preach it to me, Keith, you want to call out! And with one last “I’m ready to fall” he raises his arms in surrender to that unnamed something that is always more powerful than our pitiful little selves. And at that instant the stage goes dark and immediate silence. Nothing left to say.

You go to the show hoping this is one of those nights that he will bring us another pure and unique moment. The night in Rockford, IL when he brought out friend and songwriter/singer Richard Marx and the two of them sat with their acoustics and filled almost a third of the concert with Richard Marx tunes. Or the night in Connecticut when he was in a good mood and abandoned the set list for the show to instead serenade a couple who had just gotten engaged that night and to sing songs he had started writing that afternoon. Or the parking lot concert on a blustery March night in Little Rock where he came strolling out with his ganjo to the crowd of fans waiting by the buses and gave an impromptu concert. Or hearing the driving Celtic drum beat for “I Told You So” for the first time in the special album release concert in Chicago. Or the hope that you will be in the vicinity when he leaps off the stage to sing with the crowd. Or listening night after night to the raw emotion of “I Got It Right” as he sings it just with a piano and one floor lamp – the same way he wrote it for his wife. Or to be in a German music club when you first start hearing that crowd singing the chorus of “Raining on Sunday” back to him in English in their own expression of love.

But what is best is to find out that you are not alone. I chase Keith Urban not only to hear him and watch him, but also to join women of kindred spirit. We all have asked ourselves why we do this. Those outside, those who don’t understand, speak on internet message boards of the hoards of hormonal middle-aged women abandoning husband and kids and spending all the retirement fund in hope that Keith will whisk them off for twenty minutes in the back of the tour bus. But these women do not abandon anything. They get the kids to martial arts and dance class. They supervise the office’s year-end reports, they tend to children who’ve had brain surgery and parents who have Alzheimer. They navigate the uncertainties of a child who is bi-polar and have dinner on the table when the family comes home. They go back to school so they can improve their career prospects and raise kids on their own while working swing shift at a factory. They tend to the day-to-day business of getting life done while at the same time they know there is something else out there. And most of them are just like me.

They speak of watching a music video of this man. Or catching a snippet of him singing on a television show. Or being struck dumb by his performance when he was the 20-minute opening act for another country star. It’s an Urban Conversion and goes from 0 to 90 mph in a matter of seconds. A friend who is willing to listen to me talk about this experience has said that I had a “Keith-shaped hole in my life.” That hole was deep. I had been sitting at a stoplight one morning not really listening to the Keith Urban CD that was playing. I had bought it for one song, which hadn’t come up yet. Having given up my career as a university professor to address the needs of the children my husband and I had adopted from Russia, my life had become an endless round of driving from teacher conference to psychologist appointment to language therapist, to soccer practice, and more. Through the fog of another hour in the car with the purpose of managing someone else’s life, I heard the lines sung, “There’s a woman with a kid in the car next to me, and she’s singin’, ‘Sometimes I can’t help thinkin’ “What about me?”’” Tears started down my cheek to know that someone saw right through my soul to my despair and loneliness. Pulled by the same inexplicable force that pulled Richard Dreyfuss toward the mountain in Close Encounters of the Third Kind I went home and bought tickets for his show.

And the adventure began.

Not “one of the girls” kind of gal, I had never had a large contingent of female friends. I had a few with whom I had suffered through graduate school and one I had known since I was four. However, I couldn’t tolerate females in bunches. I didn’t do drama, I didn’t gossip, shop, trade outfits, get my nails done, have any desire to go to a spa in Las Vegas, or an outlet mall at the lake. Lying on the beach was a boring vacation and I hated bridal shower games and didn’t care to host Longenberger basket parties. I loved books, I loved music, and I loved words. Somehow amid the thousands of fans populating the fan message boards I could pick out those like me. It was a word here, a turn of phrase there, a particularly clever comeback or innuendo that told me this was someone I wanted to know better. They, too, had that “Keith-shaped hole” in their lives. Intelligent and clever women, I found that the passion we shared for Keith Urban, the man and his music, was really a passion for something else that had been locked inside for so long. We had listened to Raffi records for too long and had lost our inner rocker chick.

Some of us had never been on a plane when we decided that we just had to leave our home in Wisconsin to travel to Florida for the next possible concert. We made arrangements to share hotels with women we had never laid eyes on. We taught each other about computers, and memory, and pixels, and zoom lenses, and external disk drives, and f-stops, and photo-sharing sites, and youtube searches as we bought expensive cameras to record every concert and laptop computers to store the audio and video we obtained legally and otherwise. I learned how to run message boards and set up mySpace pages. We searched for, took ourselves, and traded photographs from every concert like my children had collected Pokemon cards, until I had to buy a 320 GB external memory to store close to 10,000 shots of Keith Urban and the bootleg videos of entire concerts. While to some this may seem obsessive, but the obsession was not a passive one. Until his concerts, I had specialized in nature photography because flowers and trees don’t move. Suddenly, I’m faced with the challenge of photographing a target moving at lightning speed across a stage with flashing spotlights. Joining the sorority of “5th row whores” (as we nicknamed ourselves), we scrambled for seats as close as possible for the clear shots. I loved being forced to learn something new, adjusting the camera to each new venue, each new angle because every night I was in a different seat, catching the unexpected and very human moment when he was lost in the music or lost in the adoration of the crowd, and waiting for the iconic moments that would occur concert after concert to freeze it forever.

And in between sharing the technical know-how we shared our lives. I’ve attended concerts with travel partners from Wisconsin, California, Ohio, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Vermont, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennesse, Nova Scotia, France, Scotland, and Germany, to name a few. I’ve been introduced to new music and new artists. I’ve traveled to hear artists who have not yet got a record deal, and others who are just about to break into the big time. I’ve learned what they listen to on other continents and seen parts of this country I’ve never visited before. I had Keith’s bass player buy me lunch, ate breakfast sitting five feet away from my guitar god, finally won my chance to meet Keith backstage, and snuck in to watch a soundcheck. I’ve encountered some truly wild women who put in the car two drunk Irish rugby players they met in the hotel lobby and then managed to extricate ourselves from the situation in one piece. And I’ve had hours in the car on road trips for these other women to assure me that I’m not insane, that we are just as normal as the women who spend their free time and money on outlet mall vacations, that we probably have a hell of a lot more fun, and that we deserve this.

Once in an interview Keith was asked how he selected the people who helped him record his Be Here album. He said he didn’t just look for the people who were good; he looked for the people who were “born to be” a studio engineer, or producer, or session musician. When you’re “born to be” you have a different commitment and drive to your craft. This was spoken by a man who definitely was born to be a guitar player and performer. Chasing Keith Urban is part of our own search for who we are born to be. It takes us out of who we have been for so long and pushes us to explore the world inside and the world outside and find what arouses our own passion.

WOW is right.

That is one incredible piece of writing. Never have I seen the experience of hardcore fandom described so perfectly, and so sanely. Yes, we are sane--we just also happen to be fans--very devoted fans.

I saw so many glimpses of my own life in her essay. It is wonderful when you find a kindred spirit, someone like you who really "gets it." And she quoted Lefsetz, a man whose column I read regularly because he writes passionately about the music industry (and also happens to love Don and The Eagles as well as Keith Urban).

And...the description of Keith's guitar playing...... :rockguitar:

Makes me wish Don played, really played, the guitar. 8)

Neither have I, this is why I wanted to share this with you. No matter what artist you love it just shows perfectly what music can do to you. I was fascinated from the first word and read it several times.

Brooke, like you I hope more of our friends would read it and tell us what they think. But I posted it in the Keith section and not everyone is reading this topic.

Ok, now I feel the need to post some photos.

Even if that woman is a hardcore fan I think we all can find a little bit in ourselves of what she has written. When she describes his guitar playing I know exactly what she means. I remember I found myself staring at him while he was playing and I was absolutely disconnected from reality. There was a magic which I've never felt before when I went to a concert.

After every show Keith put up a small video in which he says thank you to his fans who came to that particular show. In every show before the encore he calls Nicole so she can hear the crowd screaming for more. Usually he does that backstage but once it didn't work so he called her while he was on stage. 8) Unbelievable... don't know another singer who would do that.

Actually, I read this a while ago and meant to reply to it earlier too. I think all of us here can probably relate to a lot of what this lady is saying. It's nice to know that we are 'normal'. :D :D

And EF, Keith is absolutely HS&G. I admire your time management skills for being able to devote time to Keith and Glenn. I keep trying to find some time to 'investigate' Keith some more, but Glenn just keeps taking up all of my time.

LOL Dreamer, you're completely wrong. I have a lot of trouble with my time. But I don't want to miss anything so I'm switching between the forums all the time and try my best to pay attention to both. But I have to admit I pay more attention to Keith presently because
he's touring and there are a lot of news, pictures, reviews etc.

Billly Ray Cyrus' big claim to fame these days is that he is the father of Mylie Cyrus, who is Hannah Montana, the latest teen sensation on the Disney Channel. Billy Ray is trying to hard to look similar to Keith. lol He never had hair like that until Keith hit it REALLY big. Before that he always had some strange version of his mullet. lol The look is Keith's....I'd never seen someone with the style and everything before he had it. Therefore, it doesn't come off as if he's trying to imitate someone....like Billy Ray does.

I totally agree with Brooke, EF. Write what's in your heart and it will come out fine. Your English is very good, and you should be proud of yourself for being able to master the language so fluently. Even if you don't get every little noun or verb perfect in your letter, you definately have enough command of the language to impress Keith, especially when he realizes that it is not your first language. I'm sure Keith will appreciate whatever you do for him. Best of luck with it.

I hope Keith wins an award or two, EF. I bet Keith will love his SMART. I will see if I can get some pics. I think I read that small cameras are allowed, but as Dana said, we are going to be too far away for my cell phone to take any good shots. I think my niece has a nice camera with a zoom lens that I may be able to borrow. Of course, my photography skills leave a lot to be desired. In any event, I'm sure we'll be able to tape the show since it is being broadcast, and get some of our very talented Border members here to do some screenshots.

He flew into Sydney the other night to be with Mrs Urban. I don't keep up with this stuff but I thought I'd mention it.

Thanks for that info, FP. I already knew that from our US Keith forum. People there always know where he is. I think it's his usual 2 weeks break from the tour to see Nicole.

I guess he has a standard accent (I've never heard an Australian speaking before  ). You are the expert for that, FP.
Compared with the Americans (no offend here  ) he speaks very clear so I can understand all what he's saying. Furthermore he speaks in a way that you can listen to him for hours. OK, maybe that's just me because I have a crush on him.

To answer you question... since you don't like country music very much I would recommend his album Days Go By which is a compilation of 15 selected tracks from his previous albums, 'Be Here' (2004) and 'Golden Road' (2002).The first albums (especially the one with his band 'The Ranch' have more the country sound in it than the newer ones. There are some I really love and a very few I don't like.
I prefer songs in which he sings live. Nothing can beat this and you can enjoy his amazing guitar work.
He didn't bring out a live album so far and his first Greatest Hits with some new songs is planned for this year, but who knows.
I can also recommend his latest album 'Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy Thing'. Some great songs on it like Faster Car, Used To The Pain, I Told You So as well as the beautiful ballad Got It Right This Time.

I would be happy to send you a CD with live songs, covers, unreleased songs or whatever. :D

I just found out his Greatest Hits comes out on Nov. 20. It includes all his number one hits, many of his top fives as well as some of his latest album.

Usually I don't buy a greatest hits cd when I have all CDs anyway. But in this case I have to because he will add some new songs.

EF, I just wanted to say that I'm surprised you don't care for TGFY for its country flavour, being a Keith Urban fan - Keith is considered a country music artist, isn't he?

This is true, MF. Keith is considered as a country music artist because he starts his career with that. Meanwhile his music is rather like rock music with a little banjo now and then. When you see him performing at a concert you would be surprised and say: this has nothing to do with country. He converts his older songs from country into rock/pop music. This is why I rather love the live songs than the studio versions. Counts only for the older songs, the newer ones are rocking anyway and not country anymore.

The Germans think it's country and he doesn't get played here often so it's hard for him to have any success here.
He doesn't get the chance to proof what a great musician and performer he is. People don't know what they are missing.
When I went to his show I took one of my friends with me. She didn't know who he is and only knew 2 or 3 songs. But she came with me and after the show she was on cloud 9 and :inlove:

I think it's hard to get rid of that image and I doubt he wants to because... "that is how it all started".

Meanwhile I also enjoy listening to his old pure country songs. :)

EF, great job of recommendations for Dreamer and DonFan. Don't know if I can add much to that only to say I have Be Here, Golden Road, and the new one Love, Pain and the Whole Crazy Thing. There are great songs on each one.

You should check out some of his videos on You Tube. And I haven't seen Keith live, but he is really an awesome guitar player in his videos and very, very easy on the eyes. He does add the banjo a bit, but somehow, it works. A lot of the songs are quite rockin'! 8)

And I have to add that I love his accent, too! You can't really hear it in his songs, but when you hear him talk it is very evident. Just being American, I always love to hear other accents from around the world. Normal Australian is very unusual to me, Fp! Heck, I even love all the different accents from around our own country here!

And let me add a little teaser here with thanks to EF:

I'm really saving my money to get VIP tickets to see the Eagles whenever they decide to make another round here. Hubby and son also want to go, so we are talking some major $$$ here. They are first and foremost in my concert budget right now.

Urban Involved in Minor Motorcycle Crash
Oct. 1, 2007, 2:30 PM EST

The Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Keith Urban was uninjured Monday when he crashed his motorcycle near his home in Sydney, Australia.

In a statement issued by his publicist, Paul Freundlich, Urban said he was "out riding to an AA meeting, a time when my privacy is especially important to me, (when) I felt myself being pursued" by a photographer on another motorcycle.

"I sped up, and in an effort to elude an oncoming car which was making an illegal U-turn, saw no choice but to drop my bike," the 39-year-old country singer said.

"In actual fact, my pursuer came to my assistance, without taking photos, and helped me from the road," Urban said. "I returned home, got my car, and continued on my way."

Urban said the incident was the result of "one person's desire to do his job and my desire to maintain my privacy."

The New Zealand-born Urban, who grew up in Australia, completed a three-month stint in rehab for alcohol abuse earlier this year.

He checked himself into the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., last October, less than four months after his wedding to Nicole Kidman.

The couple have a home in Nashville.

Usually he doesn't mind when someone takes a photo but in this case when he's going to that AA meeting I can understand that he was trying to get away.

There are not many artists out there who would see it from that point of view. 8)

If anyone is interested, he crashed his bike in Darling Point, one of the most exclusive of the eastern suburbs of Sydney.

And apparently Keith & Nicole demanded a private box at the Rugby League Grand Final. They were offered seats on the halfway line but that wasn't good enough for them. So I presume they didn't go. :?

This is typical for the press  ... yesterday I've read an article in the German news about the incident. They wrote he blamed the photographer for that.

Keith Urban returns to recording studio
Tuesday, October 9, 2007 – Keith Urban will return to a Nashville recording studio this week to record new material for his forthcoming "Greatest Hits" CD, out Nov. 20.
He then will go to Los Angeles for several network television appearances.

I just wanted to tell you there are two different versions... only the CD and the CD with bonus DVD. As far as I know both versions come out at the same time. Not sure if the German stores will have it. But I already looked in the net if this can be ordered and it's listed. :D
