I was doing an internet search and stumbled across this cute piece of trivia.

"[Gene Carr] befriended rock star Glenn Frey of the Eagles in the mid-1970s. Frey would often wear Carr's No. 12 jersey onstage at concerts."

I found it here: http://www.hockeydraftcentral.com/1971/71004.html

Didn't Glenn mention onstage at Rama that he had had dinner with a retired hockey player friend of his? Maybe it was Gene!

By gosh Molly - I think you may be on to something. I do remember he said he had had dinner with some friends. I can remember anything else though cause my mind was too busy being jealous that he didn't have dinner with me!

I wouldn't be surprised if you were right - Carr IS Canadian, after all!

That's rather cute that Glenn wore the no. 12 jersey, and how cool to see a photo, thanks, Soda. Molly and Dreamer, your posts about Rama have just made me very jealous! If I ever win the lottery....

It's funny, all 3 nights, I tried to memorize every second of what was happening around me, but it wasn't until Nancy posted that link that I recalled that Glenn had made that comment. I wonder what else I've completely forgotten.

No, Z, I remember the Schwetty moments vividly!

Damn - you beat me to it!

And sorry GEF - but, if you don't make plans to get yourself over here this year for the tour, you're gonna really be jealous.

The sad thing is, I missed all of those moments. Talk about being off of your game.

As I was admiring baseball photos (inspired by the Eagles Hotness thread) I realized that this must be Gene Carr right here:

You know guys.......I don't believe I ever did get to hear the story behind these "schwetty" comments. ;)

And I don't know who the guy second from the left is....but I'm thinking he must be an athlete? Look at the size of his legs compared to the other guys!

Okay – Let me see if I can explain Pete Schweaty. I don’t know if all of you are familiar with Saturday Night Live (SNL) or not, but it’s a very popular, edgy comedy/variety show that has been airing late on yes, Saturday nights, since the ‘70’s here in the states. Each week a different celebrity is the guest host of the show, and stars in the comedy skits and/or performs if they are a musician. Anyway, the actor Alec Baldwin starred in some of the shows and created the character of Pete Schweaty. Here are links to the skits:

Now, how does this relate to Glenn? Well, last July in both Rama and Atlantic City, Glenn closed his shows singing Desperado sans guitar. Each time during that song, his hand movement was very incredible, but especially so, each night when he decided he needed a ‘front-end adjustment’ (if you know what I mean) in the middle of the song as we were standing right in front of him. He did this every night much to our … er … dismay! :woah: :censored: We couldn’t believe it, but you can be sure that we were watching very closely each night. We dubbed these the “Pete Schweaty” moments.

Thanks for your explanation, Dreamer. Front-end adjustment http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/smilie/froehlich/g020.gif Oh, I would love to see the Schwetty moment someday.

This doesn't really have to do with Gene Carr (although Glenn discusses him in the article), but it has to do with hockey - I just got this really rare interview from the National Hockey Magazine in 1978 where Glenn gushes about hockey. It's so cute when he talks about things like how excited he is to meet the hockey players and how great they are to their fans (sounds familiar! lol) Good photos, too.

Wow, great find, Soda! Thanks for posting that. It's a really nice interview, and I was amazed to hear that Glenn was playing regularly well before his 'Livin' Right' years.

I agree about the pics - Glenn has the Mountain Man look going in that one on the ice!

A fellow hockey fan just told me that Gene Carr is now confined to a wheelchair due to injuries from playing hockey earlier in life. He apparently has asked the NHL to assist him financially, but they declined. Because he retired before 1985, he gets no pension from the NHL. He wanted a $30K operation for his spine and even offered to pay it back and was denied. Very sad.

oh wow...that's really sad to hear...I wonder if Glenn really based New Kid in Town on this guy like it said in that Hockeydraftcentral.com piece on Carr?...anyone ever hear this before?

Re the photo in Post #12...don't know who the two are on the left, but the guy in the center is Pete Cetera, formerly of Chicago. As for Gene Carr, he played for the LA Kings from '73-'78. A lot of pro athletes ran in the same crowds as other celebrities back in the day and, in fact, a lot of them still do.

Here's a link to a website where Carr himself is quoted regarding NKIT.

What a shame that they are treating him so badly. I hope Gene Carr can get some help another way.
