My office number used to be 420, and a few years ago, some stoners stole the plaque above the door with the number on it for their lame celebration. What losers.

Verdict: FAIL.

I'm not familiar with this celebration. What's it about exactly?

It refers to Marijuana. Not much of a celebration if you ask me.

See explanation here:

420 aka "Pot Day" to some (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/420_%28cannabis_culture%29)

I watched a South Park episode last night that contained some references to the 420 celebration held at the University of Colorado, Boulder (essentially the only one of note around nowadays). For instance, the smug "college know-it-all hippie" potheads that show up in South Park are from there:

all the clocks in Pulp Fiction are set to 4:20

I think David Cross has the funniest riff ever about High Times magazine covering the JFK assassination.

There is nothing funnier than a stoner who gets all legalistic about the pot controversy..... or people who get mad at stoners... talk about futility...

Those folks are BAKED!

I was with a large group of New Zealanders yesterday and asked them about it... 3 of them started roaring with laughter... and a few others started looking at me with questioning eyes... "holding?" ha ha!

I had to look it up to find out what it was. Should I be embarrassed? :hilarious:

heck no! the new zealanders all wanted to know about it and I showed them the wiki site and they cracked up.

At my son's school they had a whole assembly to discuss the dangers of smoking (and smoking da'reefa)... his comment was "I'll bet half the teachers were baked!" we both laughed.

He also told me that his gym teacher (he's in 7th grade) was playing flag football with them and her shirt got untucked and when it came up she had a very large tattoo on the small of her back and without thinking he said, "Nice tramp stamp, ms. X!" the whole class roared and she was furious with him.

We live in an age where you can get mad or just laugh and realize none of it will matter in 50 years.

I have to admit, I completely missed 420 yesterday although I *did* go to one hell of a righteous kick-ass concert last night. It was a new group called "The First Graders of Indian Hills Elementary" and BABY!! Did they rock "Teddy Bear"!!!! EVERY ONE in the whole place was on their feet at this number!! There may have been some residual smoke in the crowd, there was some pretty creative dancing happening in the aisles.... dude...it rocked! :partytime:

There's a photo c. 1976 of Glenn doing cocaine, too, included in a freaking tourbook. They really had no shame back in the day!

my memory of those days (spotty at best) is that most people kind of laughed about it. Cheech and Chong had come along and made it funny...

I was never a drug person, but I also never thought they were 'bad' unless people became violent or got into selling etc. I knew several people who became drug dealers and that kind of stuff... definitely not funny....

but for the average college kid or guy working in a factory or in carpentry... it was passe. When cocaine really got affordable, things got way out of hand...

I think Glenn's "monster" period, nobody ever even tried to stop them and while LA might be a desert... it was snowed in for 7 or 8 years.

I think the stigma about that stuff is very different than it was back then.

Now if it's the one I think you are referring to, let's be honest, he isn't actually "doing cocaine". Just, shall we say, preparing it! :hilarious: I always thought that was pretty ballsy to include in a tourbook. :hilarious:

I know! With all the pictures of them looking stoned floating around. But back then it just wasn't such a big deal. Most everybody "did it". I was never in to it, but I knew lots of kids that were.

I wonder what they tell their kids? It would be quite embarrassing to try to explain some of those pictures where they are obviously having such a great time. I guess you just have to say that you didn't know what it could do to you back then.

I agree that it was an entirely different time. Back in the '70's, the lifestyle that these guys were living was considered very cool. Like many of you, I wasn't into the drug thing either, but I knew lots of people who were. And I think you're right Brooke - I guess the only thing they can do for their children now is to try to enlighten them about their experiences with the bad side of drug use.

I was never into drugs (alcohol-different story) at all--NONE of them but we have never made it a secret to our kids that it happened and that we weren't above all of that etc.... Enlightening them to it I believe is a good thing, why keep it a big secret because later if they find out...well we know how they can react to something like that. It's the whole "been there, done that, but don't want you to make the same mistakes" thing. Who knows if it works but so far so good I guess.

And FP---you're gonna love this smiley.....

this, of course, reminds me of the Jackson Browne recording "Cocaine"

whereupon there is an eagle in the dialogue at the end of the song...

it takes a clear mind.
