Me....I'm going to sit here and go nuts waiting. Stupid. I'm freakin' 63 years old. Feel like a kid waiting for his first....okay, let's just say Christmas <LOL>

 I loved this!!! I'm so happy for you!! She's beautiful and I will anxiously be waiting to hear all about how well she's doing.

BTW--could you get the Lhaso Apso and send her to Indiana? We had one that was 17 when we lost her. She was a perfect dog. I thought for sure when you said she plopped in Verna's lap, that she might have a new home. That's my favorite kind of dog.

Well, Verna took some pictures this morning but it's almost impossible to get a picture of Mia without me it in. She has already decided that I'm her human! Didn't happen instantly, but it didn't take all that long either.

When John left our house, Mia sort of freaked out and was nervous for a couple of hours. Not really crying, but she was whining. Verna was exhausted and went to bed not long after John left her here. I showed her around, where her food and water were and took her outside a couple of times. She is already leash trained...doesn't tug.

Finally, I sat down with a book and a cup of coffee in my recliner and it wasn't long before she was up on the footstool with her head on my leg. After a bit, I tossed a ball for her and that broke the ice. From that moment on, she hasn't left my side. Even sleeping she was curled up on my legs. When Verna got up about an hour or so before I did, Mia STAYED curled up on me and stayed there until I got up.

Even when Verna plays with her or pets her, she is looking at me to see if it is "okay". I hadn't forgotten how great dogs are, but I had almost forgotten how much I've missed having one own me!

I have pictures and will post a few later today.

What's so funny is that Verna gets up way earlier in the mornings than I do and used to spend that time loving up on our cat without me in the way. She's tried to get Mia to come out of the bedroom with her these past two mornings to no avail. Mia just will not get out of bed until I do!

I've never seen a situation in which the animal bonded that quickly and exclusively with any one person!

Just received this in an email and had to come here and share it also. Everyone that visits this thread will appreciate it.

The following was found posted very low on a refrigerator door.

Dear Dogs and Cats: The dishes on the floor with the paw prints are yours and contain your food The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Placing a paw print in the middle of my plate does not mean that is is suddenly your food, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Racing me to the top of the stairs is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It Is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other, stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out on the other end to maximize space that you are taking up, is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is no secret exit from the bathroom! If, by some miracle, I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge in an attempt to open the door. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years - canine/feline attendance is not required.

The proper order for kissing is: Kiss me first, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough.

Finally, in fairness, dear pets, I have posted the following message on the front door:
TO ALL NON-PET OWNERS WHO VISIT AND LIKE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT OUR PETS:

(1) They live here. You don't.
(2) If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. That's why they call it 'fur'-niture.
(3) I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
(4) To you, they are animals. To me, they are adopted sons/daughters who are short, hairy, walk on all fours and don't speak clearly.

Remember, dogs and cats are better than kids because they:
(1) eat less,
(2) don't ask for money all the time,
(3) are easier to train,
(4) normally come when called,
(5) never ask to drive the car,
(6) don't hang out with drug-using people;
(7) don't smoke or drink,
(8) don't want to wear your clothes,
(9) don't have to buy the latest fashions,
(10) don't need a gazillion dollars for college and

(11) if they get pregnant, you can sell their children...

Annabel

Mia doesn't remain "still" long enough for a photograph such as the one you shot Koala <LOL>

This morning, I vacuumed the house while Verna was cleaning up at her Mom and Dads. Mia went on maximum RED ALERT! She tried her best to distract that vacuum cleaner...charging it, barking at it...anything to get it away from me <LOL> That's the first time I've heard her really go into overdrive!

Normally, she communicates to us with whines...very polite. When she does need to alert us of intruders (intruders are anything larger than a bird) somewhere near our house, it is with a quiet growl and a single low pitched bark.

Not so with the vacuum! That was SERIOUS! It's a good thing that monster is locked away in a closet else, it would be in chewed up pieces!

Annabel
03-15-2011, 09:57 AM
 Bless.

Our last Boxer used to freak out whenever the vaccum cleaner appeared. It was a race for her to get up the stairs and out of 'harms way'. Tots just lays there and you have to vaccum round her or ask her to move.

Great photos of Lucky.

Vacuums are SO dangerous that I wish I could afford to have somebody better trained than I am to come to my house, get the thing out of the closet and use it!

I've been enjoying catching up on this thread. Mike, I'm glad you weighed your decisions and chose the best dog for you. I feel a little sorry for Verna though...it hurts not to be the chosen one. :ack:

.it hurts not to be the chosen one. :ack:

Last night Mia surprised both of us. She curled up with Verna and stayed there all night...taking all of Verna's cover and leaving her 4" on her side of our California King bed! I on the other hand had PLENTY of room to thrash around.

But this morning, Mia still wouldn't get out of bed until I did! And she went completely ballistic when Verna returned from cleaning her Mom and Dad's. I think Mia is just "playing us". She knew somehow that "I" was the one who had to be convinced to let her own us, but she also knows that "VERNA" is the one who butters her bread!

What I'd have given to have had a video camera at hand this morning.

Mia was really acting excited this morning and starring at the back door. We thought she was just really needing to "go" badly so we let her out.

My gosh, she took off for a tree in our back yard about the same time a squirrel bailed out of the tree and took off for the fence and a quick exit from our yard.

But Mia...as soon as the squirrel got behind a bush on its way to the fence, Mia started jumping like 4' in the air while running! Looked for all the world like a deer in full flight!

She left the ground, landed in the middle of the BASIN of our Fish Pond and didn't miss a beat! Got soaked and didn't catch the mean ole squirrel, but she gave it her best! Now she SMELLS like Chocolate Mint (which we have growing in our basin as a filter)!

Verna couldn't stand it. Took her in immediately and gave her a bath. First one she's had at our house. Verna said that once she got her in the tub, she actually acted as though she liked it!

I'm going to have to post a sigh though on our fence: "Squirrels BEWARE OF DOG".

Way cute and cuddly!

Mia proved her worth this morning. I was in the basement working and heard her barking. It was that "Hey old man, you'd best get up here and let me outside cause there's a Bear in our back yard and I need to fight him!" bark.

I went upstairs and she was going nuts at the back door. I let her out (after making sure she was mistaken about the "bear" part).

It was the birds. They were all over the place. On the ground, on the fence, in the trees...everywhere. She took off leaping like a deer going through a wheat field! She'd go after one bird on the ground and that bird would fly up into a tree and two more would hit the ground behind Mia.

That must have gone on for a good half hour! Hilarious! Mia is wiped out now. Hope no bears show up!

Only trouble with letting Tots off the lead is, she runs back to you but straight AT you. But she doesn't always stop or veer off!!!! :ack: She nearly 'took me out' today in the park. I had to swing my empty plastic bag at her to stop her hitting me. Little monkey she is.

 Brooke, that made me giggle. 'Fraid ya can't have my bunny boy :nope: but we have a rat visiting the garden that you can have. It won't eat the bait the nice man put down. :ack:

Well, I hope the bait is bunnyproof. :ack:

It's been in the bait box in our garden. (But the bunnies weren't out for a free run unsupervised then. Normally though they are only out in their enclosed run so it's all fine.) Then the box went to the next door neighbour, but a bit of the bait has been stashed between our fence and the neighbours bamboo screening yesterday where no animals, other than the rat(s), can get to it. Now tonight the box has gone to my neighbour's neighbour who saw a rat in her garden just a couple of days ago. :ack: Blooming vermin are a nuisance. We've been working on this /these for 4 weeks almost.

Gib does the same thing! He runs at you from a long distance practically almost tackles you to the ground. I'm fairly big so he never has tackled me but he sure does run into you and hit you like a ton of bricks. Oh yeah, he does the leaping too.! He is a piece of work, let me tell you! Lovley photos!

LOL, This remains my of Lucky!

Melanie-just got to tell you love your bunny pictures but Leon is gorgeous!!

You all talking about the hopping run of the dogs, you want to see something funny.... you ought to see my poor vertically challenged Pickles in the snow! You have to laugh and feel sorry for the poor guy at the same time. Remember, he has the full size Shepherd's body on Bassett Hound legs. Larry snow blows paths around the yard for the poor guy in the winter.

Yes, El, it's probably a urinary tract or kidney infection. I battle this with my cat every so often. She did the same thing as yours is doing. Get to the vet asap! The vet told me that when a cat does unusual things like going to the bathroom anywhere but the litterbox or outdoors, that is usually the case. She is trying to get your attention that something is wrong.

Wasn't sure where to put this. It's a link to a live stream of an eagles nest (sorry not that kind of Eagle!) but still pretty cool. She has babies!

http://www.wvec.com/marketplace/microsite-content/eagle-cam.html

I have been following this eagles nest for just over a month and just awhile ago found out that the adult female was hit by a plane and killed this morning. She has been in the area since 2001 and has been on the web cam yearly since 2004. The three chicks in the nest right now are about one week shy of being able to feed themselves IF food is brought to the nest. The dad finally showed up with some fish a little while ago and fed all three eaglets. The experts say these chicks need to eat at least once a day to remain healthy. They are being monitered constantly to make sure they are fed. If the male stops feeding they will make a determination of what to do. The eaglets were banded on April 21 and they are expected to fledge around Memorial Day.

I am heartbroken by this news. I watch this site several times a day. It has been very educational. Hopefully these birds will be taken care of.

Annabel
04-27-2011, 02:37 AM
Awww Cathy that is so sad. We've watched the web cam here a few times. Fascinates my youngest DD. Hope that the Daddy steps up to the task and that all is well for the eaglets so they fledge.

They have removed the eaglets from the nest.

The story is here.

http://eaglecam.tumblr.com/post/4985403539/eaglets-being-removed-from-nest

I came home for lunch and went to the site to check on them and the nest is empty. The experts feel that it is in the best interest of the eagles to finish raising them at the Wildlife Center of Virginia and release them into the wild this summer. They feel that as the birds get larger very quickly now that the adult male will not be able to provide enough food for them. There is a reason that it takes two eagles to raise a family.

TimothyBFan

I don't know if this is true or not, but I seem to recall that the "Wild Turkey" was almost made the symbol of our Nation (USA) but the Eagle edged it out. This is no joke. The Wild Turkey is a phenomenal creature...unbelievably agile in low level flight moving at speeds you just can't imagine, weaving between tree trunks while flying through the woods. And the difference between Wild Turkeys and those that Tyson raises for the Supermarkets...well, it is the difference between House Cats and Tigers!

The Eagle looks "prettier" but the Eagle is a carrion eater! A glorified Buzzard!

Hehe dogs are....um.....happy-go-lucky (trying not to say slow)....Cats are a little more....um....grudge-holding (trying not to say grumpy)?! Dogs are happy to see ANYONE... They are just kind of like the wheel is turning but the hampster is dead at times. As much as I hate to admit it, cats are very smart and very grumpy. They remember a lot better than dogs. You can take the dog to the vet and as soon as you leave it's like nothing ever happened and their tails are wagging and they are jumping all over you and following you around. You take the cat to the vet and as soon as you leave it gives you dirty looks and you don't DARE pick him/her up or you are in for a scratch and hiss! Cats are smarter than dogs I'm afraid. They also are a little more moody. Especially.....um......females!:hilarious: It's true though. Heheheheheheh.

Yep, when it's quiet there's ALWAYS trouble.

Well, almost always. I do have one lovely photo I posted of my little girl and dog both fast asleep together.

Dogs are friendlier to everyone, but Sparky is definitely a real Mummy's boy. We let him get up on the couch with Rob & I (we were having a quiet beer & listen to vinyl at the time, trying to get away from kids and animals for a few minutes!). Even though there was NO room on the couch he managed to get in between us. Then when I got up he followed me without a backwards glance at Rob...

You are right on the female cats being grumpier, and I would also add "more demanding".

Love that one of Lucky, Koala.

Now - I have to share with all of you the huge decision I have to face. Some of you all may remember that my niece visited home in March and brought her newly acquired Chorkie, Trooper, with her. Well, I fell in love with him and debated kidnapping him (joking, of course). I've been 'talking' to Trooper regularly on Skype since they went back to Colorado. Here's Trooper if you want to know why I fell in love with him ...

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/kay8342/Tropper2.jpg

Now, here is my dilemma. Another niece and nephew have been on a secret mission to find me a Chorkie - and they apparently have succeeded. Not only did they find one - but it's free. (Well, of course, the dog itself is free, but all of you pet owners know that pets are very expensive.) It's an 8-week old female, and all I have to do is say the word, and she's mine.

But the expense is not the issue for me. The problem is it has been years since I've had a pet because I have done so much traveling. I don't travel in my job right now, but I may have to in the future. As some of you know, I'm spoiled because I am accustomed to making last minute decisions to just pick up and go somewhere whenever I want. So, I'm really in a quandry about what to do. I'm gonna try to decide within the next day or so, but, as much as I would love to have her, it is a life-changing decision for me. OMG - decisions, decisions!

I don't want to try to sway your decision :lie: but my two cents worth:

A puppy is a real handful! But so worth it... a dog brings so much unconditional love into your life, there's nothing quite like it.

Both my last dog (Dax) and our current one (Sparky is now 18 months) have gone into kennels regularly, no problem (except making sure their vaccinations are kennel-ready - sometimes there are different requirements). Dax used to leap out of the car when we got to the kennels, and go running over to their gate! So last minute decisions to go away can still happen - just maybe not at Christmas/Easter when the kennels are booked out...

TimothyBFan

Oh Dreamer--you know how I feel about critters! There's nothing like them to make someone happy. Rough decision but a little dog like that can also travel with at times. Just saying.....

Good luck in the decision and if you don't take her, I will.

Prettymaid

I don't have a dog (yet) because they require more from me than a cat does. Maybe when I retire...

But anyway, I think you are right to weigh the pros and cons. I know you've got your heart set on a Chorkie, but unless you really dislike cats why not adopt a cat instead? You can go away for entire weekends and leave enough food and water for them and they're fine. Or if you're gone for longer periods of tiime you can have somebody come in and feed them. Not so easy with a dog, no matter how small! Good luck with your decision.

Brooke

I would have to second Pm's advice. Cats are sooooooo easy. Not that I dislike dogs at all. We have 4 outdoor dogs, 3 coon hounds and a pet terrier. Even outdoor dogs require attention twice a day to check water.

Good luck!

Thanks to all of you for the support and advice. Still haven't totally made my mind up yet. I've been doing some research and hope to decide over the weekend. If I had to choose right now, I would take her. But, there is so much to consider. I want her to have the best home possible and if I'm not the one that can give her that, then I'd rather someone else have her.

Well - I thought I would update everyone about my pet status - I decided to get the puppy. However, it's not the female one that I thought I was getting - it's her brother. I ended up with a male, which is what I actually preferred. I got him yesterday afternoon and he (or should I say 'we') is adjusting very well. My problem now is that I don't have a name for him yet since I was focusing on girl names. I would like an Eagles-related name, but I can't come up with a good one. One niece wants me to just name him "Eagle" and another niece suggested "Desperado". I like Desperado except for the song is so sad. If anyone can come up with something clever, I'm definitely open to any suggestions. We have a vet appointment this afternoon so I guess he will be nameless for his first visit. I'll post some pictures later.

Thanks again everyone! Wow - what a week I've had. This really is a big adjustment, but I think we have most of the critical stuff taken care of with the new pup. I have been running all week trying to get everything we need and get him adjusted in his new home. After A LOT of feedback from friends and family, I have a short list of names - I've narrowed it down to Eagle, Smuggler (middle name Blue), or Small Frey. Eagle seems to be the most divisive - people either like it alot or not at all - after all, he's not a bird. I like Small Frey, but a lot of people don't get it, especially younger ones. So I'm probably going to go with Smuggler, but I'm going to mull it over another day or so before I make it official. Anyway, I haven't had much time for pictures. I do have this one, but it's not really very good. I'll try to get a better one to post soon ...

Thanks y'all. If I must say so myself, he is, indeed, adorable. Of course, I had everything to do with that.

But, boy, he is a handful - very hyper and playful, but stubborn. I can see potty training is going to be a challenge and he is showing some agression at times. And okay male Borderers, you may want to not read this next part, but I think I'm going to have to have him neutered soon.

I still haven't had a chance to get any more pictures, but I'll try to get some more soon.

Make sure he understands the "pack pecking order".
You are the pack leader -- so,
You eat your meal first then feed him.
You go out the door first -- always.
He can't sit on the good furniture.
Keep him on a short leash.
Oh, wait a minute. Those are the rules for my husband.
I don't have a dog. Nevermind.
Good luck !

My Pickles was the perfect weight for his low profile body until Rufus came along. Rufus was so skinny from being a stray and having heart worm. How do you fatten up one dog without the other one also gaining weight. When our son came home for the summer this year, he told us he was going to have boot camp for Pickles this year to get some the weight off. :hilarious: Poor Pickles!

Congratulations on the puppy, Kay!

We used to give our doxie people food sometimes. She ended up overweight and diabetic and blind. Lesson learned!

Baby carrots are a great snack for dogs. Better than dog treats and they love the crunchiness. The only drawback to doing that is when Steve tries to plant carrots in our garden...well...you can guess how many we actually get to eat ourselves.

Thanks for the tip about the carrots, S. I'm definitely going to have to try them. I am also giving him a little bit of peanut butter. The vet said it was fine - you stuff the peanut butter in a toy that I bought and he entertains himself trying to figure out how to get the peanut butter out.

Our dogs actually know the words "peanut butter". It's one of their favorites. Get Smuggler a toy called a Kong. They're kind of pricey as dog toys go, but it will last a lifetime. They make them size appropriate for your dog. It's a perfect thing to put peanut butter and a treat in.

We also save our empty peanut butter jars (don't wash them out) and give them to the girls when we're going to be leaving them home alone. It
keeps them busy forever trying to lick all that peanut butter out. Just make sure you don't give your dog a jar too big that it could get "stuck" in.

Ive always been a dreamer
05-28-2011, 10:33 AM
Yeah - a Kong - that's what I got him. As far as the peanut butter jar - that's a great idea, but I'm afraid he's small enough where he might get stuck. And trust me, if there is a way for him to get a peanut butter jar stuck on his head, then it'll happen with him.

EaglesKiwi
05-29-2011, 04:38 AM
You can freeze things in Kongs too. I sometimes mix peanut butter with his normal food (which is very small biscuits) and stuff that into the Kong, then freeze it - takes even longer for him to get it out! :nahnah:

(but give him a chance to get used to the toy first).

Another favourite: when we've had a chicken, I boil the bones up with water (just for as long as is convenient), then sieve the bones out and freeze the liquid. There's no salt in it, unlike bought chicken stock. They can have it frozen or thawed - really handy if they've been off their food for some reason or if you want them to have more liquids. You can freeze dog bikkies in it too.

Wow-has it really been a whole year for Gibson? Happy birthday Gibson!!!

I have a sick kitty. My white Persian, Daphe, has caught a nasty cold and is sneezing so much. I keep having to wipe her little nose and mouth. Persians have those flat faces and it makes it really hard for them when something like this happens. She didn't eat or drink and at all yesterday but I got her to drink a bit this morning and just texted hubby and asked him to bring home some canned cat food this evening and maybe I can coax her to eat it. She's opened up a door in my Hoosier cabinet and made herself comfy in there away from everyone else. Figure I'll give her till Friday and if she isn't better, call the vet.

Hey now! :fingerwag: We do NOT mope around and cry when we are sick.....it's just......harder for us to handle being ill and it tends to affect us worse... We can't help that we get feeling sicker than women do. Illness just affects us worse. But we never mope around when sick. :nope: We also never act grumpy when we are sick, ever. We take it very well! :lie: We are absolute angels when sick!

Here's a pic of my daughter's kitty (Bruce) that I'm babysitting for for the summer:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y63/desperado74/Family/Bruciechair.jpg

He's a cutie and rather grouchy, but very curious of Beyonce, who is not amused by him at all. If he gets too close to her, she hiss's and growls and puts him in his place. He tries to act tough, but usually slinks away dejectedly.

Beyonce is totally stressed with his presence. Two "things" have invaded her home this year. Before Fishsticks got moved, this thing moved in! Poor girl!

Cat #3 now has the cold. Heard him start sneezing last evening and by the middle of the night, while snuggled into my back, he really started in and is weezing with it also. Daphe is back to normal, Ringo is doing better with just an occasional sneeze and now Elton. Just hope they don't start all over again.

Brooke

He cute. Why is he outside?

He loves to go outside! He is outside most of the time.

Actually, Beyonce is outdoors all summer. She sheds so bad I can't take the hair in the house. Bruce has very short, thin hair and doesn't shed much at all. Maybe because he's a Texas cat and used to warmer weather all year? Beyonce's coat is so heavy and thick, it takes her all summer to get rid of it.

I wish I could get a picture of him displaying attitude around Beyonce. It's really funny!

Willie, I hope all your cats get well soon!
