Brooke and Troub - you both have such beautiful cats!

Smuggler has his third vet appointment on Thursday. I'm anxious to see how much he weighs. I'm guessing he is close to around 8 lbs now. If so, that means he's doubled his weight since I got him around the middle of May. The day after I got him, we went to the vet and he weighed 4 lbs. 1 oz. I need to get more pictures of him soon so I can post them here.

I'm gonna have to start getting familiar with this thread now. After years and years of not having a pet I finally got a dog. Her name is Bailey and she's a cute little Maltese. I brought her home on May 25th. To this day I'm still unaware of her exact age but after taking her to the vet to get all her shots I'm told that she's probably a year and a half to two years old. She's so calm. I've only heard her bark three times and the first time she barked it scared the crap outta me because I was totally not expecting it at all.

I live in an apartment so I have to take her out quite a bit. She's pretty good about letting me know when she needs to go out. She'll start licking my legs and look at me while wagging her tail. Bailey seems to be house trained pretty well. She's only had a few accidents in my apartment and none at all in the last 2 weeks. I'm starting to get used to taking her out more often. I don't think i was doing that enough in the beginning. I'm also starting to get used to not sleeping for my usual 6-8 hours straight without waking up. Bailey will usually wake me up after about 4 hours needing to go out. She'll make sure I get up too. She'll be standing right on top of me licking my face until I get up. There's only been a handful of times that she's slept the whole night without waking me up. One of those was last night. I was glad for that because today is my day off and i was hoping to sleep in. So glad she let me do that today.

About two weeks ago, I noticed that Bailey was starting to act a little different. She wasn't playing with any of her little chew toys or munching on her rawhide bones. She just stayed in her cage and only came out when it was time for me to take her out. She was shaking her head a lot, scratching at her ears and hanging her head to one side when she walked and would sometimes yelp when I would put her harness on her. I felt so bad. She was hurting and I didn't know what to do for her. Turns out that she had a bad ear infection. After getting that first dose of ear drops she started to feel better and by the next day I'd say she was about 80% back to being her normal self. It's a pain for me and for her when I have to put the drops in her ears. Bailey HATES it!! I've figured out easier ways to get them in but she still tries to fight me off. I know she doesn't like it but it's so cute when she tries to hold onto my arm with her front paws as I try putting the drops in. She's doing much better now.

Here's some pics of Bailey:

Aww, thanks everybody. I'm really surprised about how much I've taken to Bailey. I didn't think I could get so attached to an animal. It was kind of a quick decision to take her. In the beginning I decided to take her as something to distract me from all of the crap going on in my life and it turned out that Bailey has brought me a lot of joy. I love having a pet!! It's been fun watching her grow out of her shell each day. She was really shy and timid when I first got her. I got Bailey from a good friend of mine and she got her from their babysitter. My friend noticed how timid she was, especially around guys. She thinks that her babysitter's hubby may have kicked her around while they had her. I think that may be why she very rarely barks. I've only heard her bark 3 times. She's getting better though. It takes her a little while to get used to other people but I think it's helped that I've taken her with me when I visit my friends and family.

I'm trying to get Bailey to eat a little more. The vet said she's a little bit under weight. She weighs 7 lbs but I'm told she need to weigh at least 10 lbs. I leave her dry dog food out for her to eat whenever she wants and give her the canned food once a day. The vet told me that was okay but I need to let her get used to eating the dry food more often. I'm learning. I learn more and more about taking care of her each day. I'm a newbie at this so any and all suggestions are more than welcome.

Btw, my friend no longer uses that babysitter.

OMG Jess - Bailey is adorable! I'm a new puppy owner as well. I got my pup, Smuggler, about a week before you got Bailey. Like you - I'm learning as I go along, too. Last night I signed Smuggler up for six puppy training classes that will start next week. If I learn any really good tips, I'll post them here. He is a handful, but it is amazing how much you can bond with your pets. As I posted in this thread back in May, I had to weigh everything carefully before I decided to take him, but I'm really glad I decided to go for it. I can't believe he is already 4 months old.

EaglesKiwi
07-18-2011, 04:58 AM
Puppy training classes are a great idea, Dreamer (and would be for Bailey too, Jess). It's quite easy to teach your dog commands at home (sit, stay etc), it's a whole different matter to teach them to obey the same commands when they're surrounded by distractions!

Classes will help with "socialising" too, which is all good if you want them to be the kind of dogs that can go anywhere with you.

By the way, it's never too late to take them along, and don't hesitate to take them to a second series of classes if you think it would help.

TimothyBFan

Btw, my friend no longer uses that babysitter.

Can I just say how glad I am that you added this. I was actually going to ask. My opinion is that ANYONE who kicks around any animal or lives with someone who kicks around animals, is not someone who I'd want watching my children. JMO.

Was he a rescue -- hence the name Lucky or was he just Lucky from the start? First Lucky belonged to the FIL of my sister, two days, but a puppy was too much work for him, he was his first dog. My sister could not keep Lucky because they and her friend work both the whole day, so she came with him to us ( my mom, Dad and I live in the same house and one of us is always home) and we have decided to keep him after we had seen him for the first time! None of us could have brought him to the shelter!

Want to introduce you to our newest family member. It seems I've inherited my Mom's cat Otis. How it is that I'm always the most logical place for a displaced animal is beyond me. This is a picture of him we found on my Mom's phone.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e136/williehoo/OtisMomsphone.jpg

He's almost Ringo's duplicate only about 5 lbs larger. He weighs in at 19 lbs. He's having a bit of trouble adjusting to all the other critters. He's never been around other animals and he and my Mom were best buds! We had him in her house all week last week since we were in and out but you could tell he was really missing her and toward the end of the week, wouldn't leave our sides like he knew everyone would disappear and leave him alone again every night. I brought him home on Saturday night. I think he'll be fine after awhile. I certainly hope so anyways.

Turns out my cat hates my glasses as much as I do!

Because of my recent eye troubles, I wore my glasses today (which I almost never do). My cat apparently doesn't like it! I let Milton up on the computer desk and he'll often sit and watch me type. Well, today, as I was typing, all of the sudden I saw a paw coming at me! He didn't swat at me, though - he was swatting at my glasses! When they didn't come off, he tried again, actually getting his paw under the frame and tugging. I was like "Yeah, I wish I didn't have to wear them, too!" lol

Nancy, I get the same from Tots when I wear my glasses after taking my lenses out. It's the look of 'now .... there is something different here' on her face that cracks my girls up. Thankfully she doesn't swipe at them to get them off. Her paws are a bit big for that lol.

She is the sweetest cat in the world! I am definitely her human, and she always makes a huge fuss of me when I come home. She loves cuddling up on my lap (as these pictures will illustrate!) Her favourite position is laying across my lap with her head nestled in the crook of my right elbow, like this:

I'm lovin' all of the pics over the last few pages. Everyone's pets here are so cute and precious.

I've had my dog, Bailey, for just over 4 months now and I'm very glad that I decided to get her. I love my little puppy dog!! Is it weird that I don't want her to get dirty? Her fur is so white and pretty that I want it to stay clean, well, as clean as possible. My brother laughs at me and tells me to let her be a real dog and get dirty outside. I live in an apartment so it's not that easy to let her roam around outside. She does get to explore when I go back to my hometown and stay at my brothers house and she can roam free in the backyard but that happens only a few days a month. Hopefully someday soon I can move into a house with a cute little backyard for her to play in.

Does anybody know how soon you can get a female dog fixed (spayed?) after they've been in heat? I've never had to deal with this til Bailey went through it a month ago. I gotta say that it wasn't as bad as many people told me it would be but that doesn't mean I want to do that again. I want to get her fixed but I'm not sure when I can do it. I'm guessing it'll cost a pretty penny.

You should be able to get her done now. And it will probably be a fixed fee, so your vet should be able to tell you over the phone what it will cost.

Thanks all. Yep, as you all probably know, there has definitely been some bonding going on between me and little Smuggler.

Jess, I had Smuggler neutered about 6 weeks ago when he was about 5 months old. I don't know if it's different for females, but your vet can tell you. (BTW - where is eaglesvet ... I miss her!) Anyway, I went to our local SPCA to have Smuggler's surgery done. We also got a microchip implant and both procedures were very reasonably priced. They have a very good reputation. We also have a couple of other pet clinics in our area that do these procedures as well. It's definitely worth checking into to see if anything like this is available in your area.

Dreamer Smuggler is soooooo cute!!! For some reason I thought he was going to stay smaller than he looks.

PM - I don't think he will get much bigger than he is in those pictures. He probably weighed about 11 pounds in them, and the vet said he'll probably get to be between 12 -15 pounds. He's a skinny little guy, but is really tall for his size. As you can probably see, he has some pretty long legs.

It makes me always think about how they say pets and their owners start to look alike - well, I'm still waiting to develop that long-legged trim body - just saying!

Oh no Koala, poor Lucky and poor you! I hope you know or got information from the person who owns the dog that attacked Lucky. They would be liable for the vet bills. Take pictures of the wound if you can. If indeed Lucky was on a leash and the other dog wasn't, you have an open and shut case (over here in the states it would be anyway.)

Yes, we have the name and telephone number of owner, we let give immediately it to us.

Here it is the same! Especially since in our city leash laws apply to dogs!

This time of year I remember taking my cat Beyonce to a Most Beautiful Black Cat contest back in 2007 in a neighboring town. Most had costumes, but I just tied a pretty orange ribbon around her neck and away we went. Poor baby, she was scared to death, but guess what? She won! Out of about 37 pretty kitties!

It was a lot of fun, but Beyonce was so traumatized I didn't try it again! Quit while you're ahead!

So precious! My first cat was an all-black cat as well named, not very creatively, Blackie lol. He was a great cat - I remember putting a baby bonnet on his head and pushing him around in my baby doll buggy when I was five or six. My current cat Milton would rather die than submit to such degradation, lol, but Blackie actually seemed to enjoy riding around in the buggy! Thus, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for black kitties.

I've had a couple of black cats, too. Blackie was also the name I chose for the first one. The second, several years later, was already named Midnight when I got him along with his already-named brother Renji (Because he was orangey).

Renji was the best cat I ever had, until Buddy, that is. Buddy has put all my other cats to shame. He is the ideal cat! (It's okay - I'm holding Gracie's ears!)

Several black cats in my lifetime also. Our neighbor has one named Kevin. Kevin came to visit us last night while we sat on our front porch giving out candy. Then he saw something across the street and took off, the man walking with his kids down the street told us that couldn't be good, having a black cat cross your path on Halloween night. :hilarious:

Beyonce is beautiful!! Great pic, Brooke!!

Thanks Pm! I have given her baths, and she hated every minute! I gave up on that, but it did help get rid of some of the shedding hair.

I did the same thing with my kitties when I was a kid! Yeah, they didn't really care for it, but they endured! lol Blackie is a great name! I don't remember a "Blackie" in particular, but I had so many cats living on a farm during my childhood that I'm sure I probably did!

You know, it was really kinda funny. She/we ended up winning 2 tickets to a show at the Fox Theater in St. Louis, $75 cash, and dinner for two at a nice restaurant! Since Beyonce couldn't go, obviously, I took my Mom to see A Christmas Carol at the Fox and hubby out for the dinner. Beyonce did get some gourmet cat food and a new toy with some of the money!

Bobby and I are having a bad time right now. Our dog, Splash died Tuesday. Wasn't a real surprise. She was 13 years old and had cancer.
Our son wants us to take a dog that he has (he has three) because the other two dogs pick on her and no one but him gives the dog any attention. At first we thought no way but Bobby is lost without Splash and he thinks another dog will help him get over losing her. It's fine with me either way. One good thing, Bobby takes care of them and she would be no extra work for me.

I'm so sorry AZ.

Pet owners almost always get another pet after one has died, but everyone's mourning time is a little different. Some people want to replace the deceased pet right away and others can't imagine getting another until enough time has passed. Either way, I think it's important to get another pet. They need us. (And we need them.)

Ah, AZ, I'm very sorry to hear about this. I hope it works out well with the new dog. I think you'll find it definitely won't take Splash's place, it'll be a very different pet, and yet help fill the hole in your lives that Splash left behind.

I also am very sorry for your loss, AZ. It's just not ever an easy thing to get over. Good luck if you do get the new dog. It sounds like that would be perfect for that dog if he/she's being picked on by the other dogs and needs the attention. Maybe it was meant to be. Let us know.

So sorry to hear your news AZ. At least Splash is at peace now and no more pain.

After our first boxer girl died it took us a year before getting Tots. It was a long year!! Sounds like having your son's dog will be good for Bobby and help your son's dog if she's being picked on. Win / win.

Thank you. I really appreciate it. We are still thinking of another dog but Frank won't be coming over until after the first of the year and we may talk ourselves out of it by then. Pets sure are a lot of company. Everyone around us has a dog so we might as well let ours join in all the barking. Plus the house next to us was broken into, so we would feel better if both of us went anywhere for the day.

I was thinking about all the words I think my cats know.

For example, since they are fed in the basement and their litter boxes are there, I always use the words upstairs and downstairs. I think they've got those down. A few others...

Outside
Inside
Hungry?
Treat

and the one that gets the best response...kitty kitty

Not to call them to me, but it's a signal that they should come and look out the window because there's a cat (or dog, or deer, or fox) out there. I always get there attention with that one!

Just to be clear, my cats do not go outside. They go out onto a screened porch. I don't think cats should be let outside.

What words does your pet understand?

Troubadour
12-13-2011, 09:13 AM
I'm pretty sure Maisie knows her name, as well as "food" and "treat" (those are definites!) I think she knows "kiss" too, because when she is on my lap and I say "give me a kiss", she will tilt her head up to me and let me kiss the top of her head. So sweet.

TimothyBFan
12-13-2011, 09:39 AM
Dogs "get it" easier than cats do, that's a given. My dogs know all kinds of words but the one that gets the most response is "Dad's home" when I hear Larry pull into the garage. They go crazy. I also believe they know about what time he comes home every day because Rufus will sit in the doorway of the kitchen into the laundry room where he can look out the big window toward the garage and watch for Dad. I'm the one that feeds, waters, takes care of him but it's Dad he gets so excited about. Ungrateful brat!! :hilarious:

As for the cats, I choose to believe all 3 of them know what "get down off the table" means but refuse to do it. :hilarious: My cats must not be to bright because I don't think they know anything other than the sound of the cat food container being opened. :)

Brooke

Too funny Willie!

Troub, my cat Sparky used to tilt his head so I could kiss it too! I tried to teach Beyonce that, but she doesn't do it.

I know Beyonce knows her name and when she was inside all the time she knew out, downstairs at bedtime because that's where she slept and the litterbox was there, and come on or come here. She's outdoors all the time now and we haven't had to talk as much!

Ive always been a dreamer
12-13-2011, 09:19 PM
Oh I love this topic - it's already making me laugh. Smuggler has this adorable way of tilting his head whenever I'm talking to him too. This is an old picture that I posted earlier, but you get the picture (pun intended).

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b296/kay8342/Smuggler9weeks_2.jpg

Now -I think he understands a lot of words like ...

His name (and all the other hundreds of names that I call him too).
kisses
tricks
treats
outside
sit
down
stay
leave it
no bite
no pull
no jump
pee pee
poopy
no no (except just like some kids I know - he thinks it means yes)

There are probably some others too, but those are the ones I thought of off the top of my head.

Milton knows his name and I think that's it. Otherwise, he ignores my "commands"! Even if I say "Stop" or "No" he doesn't respond unless I raise my voice, and if I say "Nummies" (my word for treats) he doesn't look interested unless he sees me actually moving to get him his food. Sad but true!

TimothyBFan

On this subject, we were laughing last night. After dinner, while we were cleaning up, and the dogs were laying in the middle of the kitchen floor like always, Larry & I were talking about what still needed to be bought for Christmas. He asked "has anything been bought for the dogs?". Just as he said the word "dogs", Rufus' tail started wagging. When it stopped, we kept talking and would occasionally throw the word "dog" into the conversation, completely out of context and every time we did it, his tail would start thumping on the floor again. :hilarious: So, I'd say, he obviously knows the word "dog" and knows Mom & Dad are talking about him when he hears it.

My dog Sparky knows:
Stay (until I come back to him)
Wait (but watch & listen for my next command because I'll be telling him to do something else without going back to him)
Sit
Down
Play Dead
Roll Over (still learning this one)
Quicklies (for wees)
Uh-uh (when he does anything bad)
Good (when he's obeyed any command - usually followed by food)
Walk (I think he might also understand "canine perambulation" now which I've been using as a substitute)
Leave it
Touch
Here
Bath (it's a 4-letter word!)
Over (for jumps)
Walk On (for any contact equipment e.g. an A-Frame)
Right
Left
Go / go on (when I want to send him away from me)
Tunnel
Heel

My cats know their names. And that's it... second thoughts, I think they know lots of things but they don't take orders from the lower classes.

I'm loving all these replies!

Another term I always try to make my cats understand is "It's okay". This is for when they seemed spooked or nervous.

When I was about 13 or 14, we went on vacation to the Wisconsin Dells and into Ontario, and for some reason we took our Siamese cat Chang with us. I remember we were picnicing at some sort of park and had Chang tied to the table leg with a leash. Along came a man in a train conductor's uniform (apparently they had a kiddy train ride there) and he innocently stopped and spoke to Chang. The cat bolted, broke the leash and ran down to an overgrown ravine that led to water. We were terrified! The three of us spent the next hour wading through weeds and sticker bushes looking for Chang and constanly calling, ''It's okay...it's okay." We had always used that phrase at home and hoped it would work when we really needed it! At one point Dad suggested that we might have to give up, but Mom and I would not hear of it! Finally, after much calling we heard a faint meow and kept telling Chang that it was okay until he finally came out of hiding and we were able to gather him up and head home!

Since then I learned something. Generally dogs want to go with their masters, but cats want to be in their home territory. Lesson learned - Duh!
