I don't have tickets yet, but I sure would like to catch CSN when they
open for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in Nashville on August 12th.

I'm hoping for some ticket drops a little later.

There ya go Ticky and WT:

Portland, Or, June 11 at the Ampitheater!

I saw Indianapolis, IN also in August.

I saw that, but it's not in Portland but it's close. Im not quite sure what they meant there, but it's in Clark County, Washington. Now, it's not a HUGE trek from here, but I imagine there are a few Washingtonians who might get their hackles up *G* Still.. might be worth the trip!

No Rhonda, on the list of dates the schedule definitely said Portland, Oregon Jun 11 and I think it said "Ampitheater". But I couldn't find it when I went to Ticketmaster and looked for ticket prices.

It could have been a misprint on the website, but I kinda got the idea it was intentional. If you are serious about CS&N, I'd look into it. I've heard they are GREAT live performers. Well, that sounds stupid. I haven't heard too many Dead ones sing Live very well. There were some exceptions back in the 70's though!

OOPS!

I just went back and looked again and either my eyes were crossed when I read it or they've gone back and edited it. :brickwall:

They are fantastic in concert! Their harmonies are comparable (?) to our guys. Don't know how to put it. They were probably very much looked up to by them. They are legends for sure and if you can go, you should. You won't regret it.

I understand what you mean, Brooke. Their harmonies blend as if they were born to sing together, just like our guys. CS&N has their own unique style and sound and their voices seem tailor-made for collaboration. This isn't my first rodeo with CS&N but it's been years since I saw them live so I'm really looking forward to a super-great evening -- right after Denver and just before Boston!

I would seriously give consideration to a Kansas City tour stop myself! Or better yet for me anyway, Wichita. We have a new arena that I'm sure the managers are struggling to fill with class acts!

The Royal Albert Hall show is meant to be my birthday present from my mum! She has had to wait until the end of this month to book the tickets though, so I'm keeping everything crossed that there will still be some available. CSN is one of the few bands now that I would give anything to see live. I love them to bits!

Have a wonderful time, Cynd.

I've always loved 'em Lou but unfortunately, Verna grew up in a different decade than I and never developed an affection for them. I really like the etheral harmonies that they invoke....especially Crosby. All of them are unbelievable musicians that are close to being unequaled in songwriting. Amazing!

I think that the thing that really hooked me on them was that in the Early 60's, and throughout that decade, I was into really mostly into Blues and Folk Music (Peter, Paul & Mary "Folk") and CSN took that kind of music to the next level and bridged the genres between "Folk and Rock".

The only other group to come close to their accomplishments was "Simon & Garfunkle". I had the privilege to see them live a few years ago up in Columbus, IN when they did their "Old Friends" tour. It was really good to see them together again. Simon has lost nothing! Garfunkle hasn't fared quite as well, but he can still carry a tune <LOL>.

I saw them last summer. Great concert. Women were going nuts. The one behind us yelled "I LOVE YOU GRAHAM" during a lull. Hilarious!

LOL Eve.....Graham may have garnered praise and adoration from the lady behind you, but historically, I think it was Crosby who the one most sought after. He didn't run very hard either trying to get away!

His biography is one tragic read as has been his life. He is one of the "Second Chance" guys. All through that, Graham was there trying to be his safety net. If you like them and want a dramatic read, You really should read "Long Time Gone".

Next to the hilarious "Living with the Dead", "Long Time Gone" has been one biographical highlight of that type book. "Electric Gypsy" (The Hendrix story) was "encyclopedic", but not nearly as good a book to read. I've read one or to on Joplin and one on Stevie Ray Vaughan, but they don't come close in grabbing your attention as did the book on the Grateful Dead and the one on David Crosby.

I've just booked my CSN tickets for the 4th of July! (Well, my mum paid for them - late birthday present.) I am so, so, so excited! I feel incredibly lucky getting the chance to see many of my favourite acts live, at this stage of their careers... Eagles, Al Green and Crosby, Stills and Nash in a few short months. Amazing!

I know I will walk out of the Royal Albert Hall even more in awe of those three guys than I am already.

Following is a book review of "Long Time Gone" that I wrote right after reading the book.

Let me start out by saying that this book has taken a place on my list of favorites alongside only one other for "entertainment" value and it stands alone for literary style and what I believe to be factual disclosure of the incidents that made Crosby's life both a disaster and a monster success....but not the way you might think!

Many (or most) autobiographies are written in a way that either glamorizes the lifestyle of the artist or it paints it very dark, depending on the agenda that the author has. With David Crosby, I got the feeling that he was writing to serve several agendas.

First, I think he wanted to reveal the circumstances that set him up to be first a connoisseur of sexual perversion, a highly respected musician, a drug addict of mythical proportions and one very complex person.

Secondly, I do think that he desired to show from several points of view, the degradation one can descend to in substance abuse and the folly of thinking that you as a User are doing so with no one knowing.

I think also that because of the time of the release of this book, that David may have needed to face the reality of his addictions during his early recovery during and after his time in the Prison in Texas. Writing his recollections in such detail without excuses was very likely a very therapeutic undertaking!

Finally, I believe he wished to convey his humble love for all of those who helped him along the way. The references are far to numerous to list here, but they do include Jackson Browne, Stills and Nash of course, Joe Walsh, David Geffen, Robert Elliot, Peter Fonda, drug dealers, groupies, girlfriends, managers, security guards (including "Smokey" Wendell), Doctors and even Judges involved in his incarceration!

The book begins with Crosby's privileged childhood. His father was successful in motion pictures as a much sought after photographer/cameraman. But Crosby was a juvenile delinquent from the get-go and later became more out of control after his parents separated and divorced.

Throughout the documentation of his early life/career, you are made aware of the fact that David Crosby pretty much knew everyone in the music business and many in the film industry. These were not casual acquaintances but friendships developed as the principals were making their way in their respective careers.

Interlaced throughout the book are the relationships that David had with Stills, Nash and Young. This was particularly true of that tight bond with Graham Nash.

The "style" of writing is one that I really enjoyed and appreciated. It is not "just" the author giving his account of episodes that he determined were significant. It portrays episodes usually from three perspectives: First from an person who was directly involved in the incident. Second from his co-author Carl Gottlieb. And then finally from Crosby himself, recalling what happened at the time and what significance it had for him. Most of the time, Crosby's comments agree with those of the other two quoted sources, sometimes embellishing them a little but, there are times when David was wanting people to perceive exactly as the witnesses conveyed it, when in reality, David had another agenda. This was never more true than when he was struggling with his addiction to Base Cocaine.

The use of quotes by friends and sometimes quasi enemies of David are liberally used so you do get a very clear impression of what was happening. I do believe that is crucial to the accuracy of information delivered by David when he was in so much trouble with Cocaine that he was basically nonfunctional.

As for the sexual nature of Crosby and his "legendary" harems...well even that is clarified toward the end of this book. To say that he was the archetype of what we know of today as a Male Chauvinist Pig is a vastly understated. But if you are looking for pornography, look elsewhere. Very little in the way of graphic detail is given though several of the David's "live-ins" are represented in the book via quotes. Jan, David's wife now, is quoted many times and adds to the story the incredibly depraved life they lived in the early Eighties.

Much of the last part of the book deals with his trouble with the Law and subsequent incarceration in the Huntsville State Prison in Texas. It does show a glimmering of the promise of David's recovery but does not get into it in great detail. The book was published in 1988 and he was in prison on Christmas of 1985. So, only three years later, it would have been hard for the REST of his life to be anticipated!

This may very well be the most straight forward account of a Rock Star that has ever been written. I can only say that I Highly Recommend this book! I only hope the second book ("Since Then") carries forward with the same ability to hold one's interest as did this book!

I don't think you'll be disappointed in it Brooke. Crosby pretty much ended his first book with his recovery from substance abuse.

He did write a followup that in itself is a worthy read called "Since Then". BIG DIFFERENCE! Oh, not that the book is bad....it is that the subject matter is so different.

Well, I’m at home and (almost) recovered after the weekend. It was hectic, but fun. I went to my cousin’s wedding reception down in Somerset on Saturday, and drove up to London to see CSN yesterday. I didn’t get to bed till about 4am, but I’m awake, armed with coffee, and ready to write a review. Hopefully it will do the show justice.

My mum came to the concert with me. Despite what you might believe, I do have friends! ;) But this was a belated birthday present from her. She was pretty excited about seeing CSN too, although she’s not as big a fan as I am. We arrived in London at about 5pm, so we had time to eat and have a drink before the show started at 8. We had decent seats, on the slightly raised level of the stalls, to the left of the auditorium. We could see everything perfectly. For anyone who has never been to the Royal Albert Hall before, it is a stunning venue. David Crosby even commented at one point: “It’s the best venue in Europe, for sure.”

It looked almost sold out, apart from some of the upper tiers and boxes. The audience was pretty good. They took a while to get warmed up, but from the interval onwards, there was a standing ovation from many after each song.

The stage had a beautiful CSN logo as the backdrop, which I admired as we waited the ten minutes or so for the show to start. At 8pm, the lights dimmed and the guys walked out from the right wing of the stage. It was funny because, based on a few concerts and clips we’ve watched, we presumed Stephen Stills was going to be on the right hand side during the show, with Graham Nash in the middle, and Crosby on the left. My mum even said to me before the concert, knowing that my favourite is Stephen Stills: “I’m surprised you didn’t ask to be on the right – seeing as Stephen Stills will be over there.” So it was a nice surprise when Stephen led the line of musicians out of the wings and took his place at the left side of the stage, nearest to me! They had a carpet laid out on the stage, and Graham Nash was barefoot (something that I was envious of, due to the fact that my shoes, although pretty, had been KILLING ME all day!)

They opened with Woodstock, which was incredible. After the song ended, as the applause was dying, a woman with an American accent yelled out: “Happy 4th of July!” Everyone cheered and clapped, and Graham Nash said “But what does the 4th of July mean to you guys?” Crosby responded: “That was an American.” Then he told the Brits that we were missing out - that the fireworks were great. Then he added “Oh, but you do fireworks too, don’t you? Guy Fawkes and all that?” Graham replied “You’re a few months early, David.” Everyone laughed. There was a bit of banter, some that I missed, and Stephen Stills said “It’s our fault for going on about all the teabag stuff. If we hadn’t brought it up, they wouldn’t have felt compelled to retaliate with oil.” This comment was met with lots of ‘ooohs’ (and some boos.) David Crosby made an ‘ouch’ gesture, shaking his hand. Stephen grinned and winced. Before they went into the next song, David said: “Anyway. Happy 4th of July.”

They then played Graham Nash’s Military Madness, followed by Long Time Gone. LTG was AWESOME. David Crosby’s voice is so powerful – it sounded almost other-worldly, at times. Lots of shiver-up-the-spine moments. Buffalo Springfield’s Bluebird was next, then Marrakesh Express. Graham Nash was fantastic. He looked and sounded in great form – very energetic and passionate. Last night made me realise just how crucial he is to the CSN sound. He featured vocally on most of the songs and it almost seemed, without sounding clichéd, that he was the glue. Next came Southern Cross, which is one of my favourites. This was when the audience started to get fired up, too. Stephen did a great job, and he added the high bits on the “we cheated and we lied/it was the easiest thing to do” parts. It’s not on the record, but I’ve heard him do it live sometimes, and I love it! My mum mentioned in the interval that she thought Stephen was struggling with his throat. I hadn’t really noticed, but he was drinking a lot – and when I thought about it after the show, he barely sang lead. Apart from Southern Cross and a couple of songs I’ll come to later, he mainly played guitar. He was limping a bit, too. Still... I thought he was great. He seemed in good spirits and his guitar playing was SMOKING! My respect for him as a guitar player has shot up after hearing him live. At one point, he walked from one corner of the stage to the other, and back again, during this incredible guitar solo... it was screaming! It must have lasted about five, ten minutes. Just awesome. He threw some picks into the audience but sadly I wasn’t close enough to catch one! He also shook the hand of a guy in the front row at the end, which was pretty cool.

After Southern Cross, came In Your Name, which Graham Nash introduced as “A sad song. A little prayer.” It was beautiful and moving. Then David Crosby said: “Now. Every year when we go out on tour, we have the same debate. About which of the tall, skinny Canadian’s songs we’ll sing this time.” Everyone laughed, knowing of course that he was referring to Neil Young. Crosby continued: “There are so many of them. I think he writes about three songs a week. I write three a year. There’s something not fair there...” It was a jovial introduction, and he said: “Anyway. This is the one we decided on.” They launched into Long May You Run. Stephen Stills sang it, and he did it beautifully.

Next was Deja Vu. Crosby’s voice really shone in this one.

Then came Wooden Ships, which I’m pretty sure was the last song before the interval. Again, the audience cheered and whooped when they realised what song it was. Crosby and Nash shared the vocals, instead of Stills, which I was a tad disappointed about because I love the way SS sings the opening line: “If you smile at me, I will understand...” Still, it was superb, and left the audience nice and high, anticipating the second set.

They returned with Helplessly Hoping, which was fantastic. Their vocals really were spot on. I knew they were going to be incredible, but it didn’t prepare me for the awe I felt hearing them for the very first time. As I have said before, it was truly a dream come true for me. After Helplessly Hoping, they sang the Beatles’ Norwegian Wood, which got a round of applause when the audience realised what it was. After that song, Crosby said: “Now, let me just explain what all this is about...” (meaning the cover versions.) Stephen Stills had started playing guitar though, and didn’t seem to want to stop. Crosby said “Never mind.” and the audience laughed. Stills carried on playing, and the song was Midnight Rider. I feel redundant now, because every song was fantastic! When Midnight Rider ended, Crosby said “As I was saying...” in a pointed tone, which got another laugh. He explained that the record company had approached them and asked them to record an album of “songs we wish we had written”. He continued “So we’re trying them out on you. You’re our guinea pigs. If you like them, we’ll record them.” That got a lot of whistles and applause, and Graham Nash said “This is a Bob Dylan song.” To my infinite delight, they played Girl From The North Country. I adore that song, and Stephen Stills sang the bulk of it. The way they played it sounded very romantic, and almost old-fashioned... it really worked. Stephen sang the same line each time in a rich, deep voice. It sounded wonderful.

Another surprise came after the Dylan song. Graham said “We’re taking a real risk here...” and they launched into The Who’s Behind Blue Eyes. I couldn’t believe it! That’s yet another of my favourite songs, and they of course did an awesome, powerful, gritty version. Afterwards, a guy yelled out: “Record it!”

The last of their covers was Ruby Tuesday. They got the audience to sing the chorus alone, and it was a lot of fun. Everyone loved it.

I can’t quite remember when this happened, but at one point David Crosby said “It might be because I used to be REALLY HIGH... but we’re not in the middle, are we?” He looked around him, as if he felt out of place, and people laughed. Stephen said “So you wanna do a few butterfly steps to the left?” David continued: “See, this is what happens. Every night they move us a little more to one side... I think the crew’s f**king us.” After the next song, a whole bunch of crew guys came out and moved Crosby’s stool way over to the right. Everyone laughed and clapped and Crosby held his hands up and said “I can’t win, can I?”
There was quite a bit of banter, which the audience loved. At one point, Graham said something I didn’t catch, which made people laugh, and David said: “The puns are the worst part. He thinks, because he’s an Englishman and you guys invented the language, that he can do whatever he wants with it.”

They also introduced the band, and paid each other various compliments. Graham said Stephen is “one of the best lead guitar players around.” David said something to the effect of: “It’s Stephen’s job to write incredible rock and roll songs. It’s Graham’s job to write anthems that everybody knows. And it’s my job to write the weird sh*t. A job I feel I’m well suited to...” After one of Crosby’s incredible, soaring vocals, Graham said “That’s GOOD weird sh*t.”

At one point, the audience was calling out for certain songs. David was sitting on his stool and Graham was standing in the middle of the stage, near him, drinking. Stephen Stills disappeared for a couple of tracks around this bit. Crosby seemed to be deciding on something, then he said: “Actually, I’m gonna completely change what I was going to do.” Graham Nash looked a little worried! Crosby said “I’m going to do this... because I have to.” He sang What Are Their Names, which was stunning and very moving. As the song ended on the line “peace is not an awful lot to ask”, there were various “yeahs” and whistles from the audience. I’ve said it before, but Crosby’s voice is just OUT THERE. My mum came away saying that David Crosby is absolutely her favourite, because of his voice!

They followed What Are Their Names with another moving Crosby song, Guinevere, which David dedicated, as always, to his wife. Afterwards he pointed to his wedding band. He then began to introduce the next song, by telling a sweet story about Jackson Browne. He said that, when he wrote this song, he was “really lost”, and that he had the first part, but he didn’t know where he was going with it. Jackson heard David play it, and said: “Man, that is a great song. You have to finish it.” Jackson dragged David over to Warren Zevon’s house, sat him down at the piano, and wouldn’t let David get up until he finished that song. And so Delta was completed. David said: “He was being a really good friend.” Delta was one of the first songs I loved when I got into CSN, so it was a real treat to hear it live, especially after listening to the story of how Jackson made Crosby finish it. Thank you, JB!

The band was introduced, including Joe Vitale and James Raymond, David’s son. Graham introduced Joe as “the guy who has been kicking me in the ass for the past thirty-five years.”

Graham sat down at the keys and they played Cathedral, which was fabulous – particularly as I live in Winchester, and know Winchester Cathedral very well! Not that I’ve ever taken a 6am ‘trip’ there though... Graham stayed at the keys after this song, and David started to speak. He said “Do you want to hear a scientific fact?” Graham interjected: “I’m sure they’re dying to hear it.” Crosby proceeded to tell the audience that a study has been done, and they found that 30% of young British women between the years of 1969-1973 lost their virginity to the next song. Everyone laughed and Graham Nash was shaking his head. He said “We weren’t responsible for all of them.” Then he sang Our House. They asked the audience to sing alone towards the end, which they did, quite loudly. It was great.

Next came Rock ‘n’ Roll Woman, followed by the final song in the set, Almost Cut My Hair. I love this song, and yet again, Crosby sounded awesome. It went on and on, and completely rocked. I can’t really do it justice here! They seemed very appreciative of the audience. Both Crosby and Nash commented on what a great audience we’d been, and at the end, Graham said “You make me real proud to be English.”

They left the stage to rapturous applause, only to return a minute or so later to play Love The One You’re With. Stephen sounded great on this, and Graham got the audience up dancing (not that we needed much encouragement.) After this, they took their bows and wandered towards the wings – but the audience was demanding more. They looked at each other and Crosby held up a finger, as if to say “One more?” The audience cheered and they came back on to take their places at the mics. David Crosby said “Sing Along. You know this one.” It was Teach Your Children. Once again, they got us to sing the chorus alone, which we did. It was an uplifting, moving end to a truly spectacular show. It kind of felt surreal all the way through for me... I just loved every minute. I feel very privileged to have seen these guys – a BIG dream realised.

We walked out of the Hall discussing how fantastic the show was, and although my shoes were a frickin’ nightmare, we wandered around to the Stage Door to see if there was any activity. There was about fifteen people waiting, so we hung around for a while. Pretty soon after we arrived, suddenly my mum elbowed me, and I looked to see Stephen Stills, still in the blue polo shirt he wore on stage, a few feet away from me, scurrying past the crowd. He went in through the stage door. Someone called something out, and he turned around when he was on the steps and threw them a grin. It was so quick though, we didn’t even get a picture. We saw the band members come out, including Crosby’s son, James Raymond, who stopped and signed some autographs and chatted. He was really sweet and said that Crosby had already got in the bus, but that Stills and Nash should be coming out soon. Joe Vitale also came out, and signed a couple of things. He also seemed like a great guy, and it was cool to see him! Anyway, a while later, a guy came over and told us that we were waiting in the wrong place... that the buses were round the other side, and that’s where we’d have more chance. A few people went over, taking his advice, and a few stayed... We weren’t really sure what to do. A little while later, we heard some activity, so we trotted around the corner to see Graham Nash signing some autographs by a big tour bus. My mum had the camera so I went and tried to get an autograph or a picture with him. I got THIS CLOSE, but he was ushered away before I could get anything. There were a few big blokes around him, shoving albums in his face and talking to him – I was getting bundled. They were more determined than a bunch of teenage girls, I swear! Anyway, I was gutted I didn’t get anything, but it was still more than I’d expected to be within a few inches of him. I’m pretty sure I brushed his arm at one point, while I was holding out my pen. My mum did a good job in getting a couple of pictures of him. He was sporting a soul patch, which looked pretty good! He seemed great, and told a guy who complimented him on a Hollies track/album that “there’s a new one coming out soon.” A few people stood in front of the parked buses, because you could see them through the windscreen, but I would have felt a bit intrusive doing that, so we decided to make our way home, knowing that they wouldn’t come out of the buses once they were on them. As we walked back though, we past another tour bus, behind the one Graham got on. I saw Stephen Stills standing in the aisle of the bus, through the windscreen. As we walked past the blacked out windows, my mum said “He could be watching you right now.” Way to make me feel nervous! I put all my effort into not tripping over. Not easy in shoes that were eating my feet...

Anyway. That is my CSN story. Here are the few pictures I got. It was an incredible night, and it’s safe to say my love and appreciation for them has increased after seeing them live. They are amazing musicians, and I was privileged to see them, let alone to get that close afterwards. Truly a magical evening.

OMG Lou - what a fantastic review and pictures. I can tell it was a labor of love for you to write that. I'm so glad you loved the show and had such a great time. Awwwww Lou! That was a wonderful review of the gig. It was like being there (and like being at the stage door afterwards). The banter between the lads and the audience sounds wonderful. Your love for these guys is very evident from all you have written, and I love reading a review by a real fan! Wonderful pictures as well. I hope you get to see them again sometime.

Troub,
Thanks for the great review and pics. It made me even more excited
to see CS&N when they open for Tom Petty in August in Nashville,TN.
However, since they are sharing the stage with Petty, I'm sure I won't

Troub, I'll say it again - how refreshing to see somebody your age enjoying bands that I grew up with. Hell, I'm starting to get a little jealous! You've seen Jackson Browne and I haven't, and now CSN! :hilarious:

How cool that they did Norwegian Wood!

This part disappointed me too:

Then came Wooden Ships, which I’m pretty sure was the last song before the interval. Again, the audience cheered and whooped when they realised what song it was. Crosby and Nash shared the vocals, instead of Stills, which I was a tad disappointed about because I love the way SS sings the opening line: “If you smile at me, I will understand...” Still, it was superb, and left the audience nice and high, anticipating the second set.

Anyway, I loved the fact that your review was so thorough. It almost made me feel like I was there. (Almost!)

Crosby, Stills & Nash have split with their label and producer - which means that their album of covers project has been scrapped. I'm quite sad about this, because I saw them perform some of them back in July (Ruby Tuesday, Girl From The North Country, Midnight Rider, Behind Blue Eyes, Norwegian Wood) and they were fantastic. However, the word on the grapevine is that Stills and Young are considering a Buffalo Springfield reunion tour instead...

I love that comment that Ohio was 'almost punk'. Someone recently made a plaintive plea on the Guardian blog in an article praising Bob Seger: 'why does EVERY bit of music have to be compared with punk in Britain"?!!

As for the next comment about Young and his 'self-mythologising' there is some truth in that, as there is about some other rock stars I won't name at the moment.

My preference would be for a Stills-Young reunion.

Hmmmm,

April 16 - First Council Casino, Newkirk, OK

That's only 60 miles from me! I'd never get my wife to a C&N concert, but she plays that casino all the time...two or three times a week. She might let me hitch a ride down there for the concert!

Troubadour
04-04-2011, 05:34 PM
I'm pretty sure that's where I saw Al Green! It was definitely in Newkirk.

MikeA
04-04-2011, 06:58 PM
Well DANG Lou, if you were that close, why didn't you and Jess call? <LOL> I could have taught Jess how to play Blackjack! Seriously, I knew you were in Oklahoma but had no idea you guys had driven up to Newkirk. I really would have come down to shake your hand.

Okay, It probably wasn't "Newkirk" though they talk about all three of the casinos down there as being "Newkirk". "First Counsel" is about a mile south of the Oklahoma/Kansas border. "Native Lights" is about a mile further south. Newkirk is around 10 miles south of the line and the "Southwinds Casino" is something like 3 miles east of Newkirk.

But I think that "First Counsel" is the only one that really has a facility for concerts and that is pretty new. So my money would be on "First Counsel". Nice new casino.

Troubadour
04-04-2011, 07:40 PM
Just checked - yup, it was the First Council Casino! Al Green played in a tent outside, but afterwards we went into the casino and played a bit. I won $38. Talk about a high-roller! ;)

We actually dipped into your state. We drove past the casino, past the Kansas sign, and then turned right around. So, technically I can say I've been to Kansas! Unfortunately Jess didn't come on that trip - Christi's brother and sister drove me up there for the concert while Jess was working. I'm sure we would have contacted you if it had been just the two of us.

MikeA
04-04-2011, 07:56 PM
Since then (the "tent days") First Counsel has constructed a dedicated Auditorium for concerts and they have a lot of them down there. Mostly Country Western (understandable considering it's Oklahoma) but every once in a while, they get some Rock going. Heart has been there. So has Three Dog Night. And I think Meatloaf did a couple of nights there.

They've also built a hotel annex onto the Casino. I don't know if that's finished though.

It's about a 60 minute drive down there to First Counsel and Verna goes at least twice a week. Sometimes more. I think she's getting me a ticket the next time she goes down...probably tomorrow.

Stevie and Rod are playing the Sprint Center in Kansas City. If it was just Stevie, it would be a no-brainer. I'll have to read Nancy's review closely before deciding. It's a lot bigger commitment to drive 3 hours to KC and then fight the mob of people at the Sprint Center up there.

I'm really hoping that The Band Of Heathens gets a gig down in Oklahoma. I'd drive a long ways and fight a pretty rowdy crowd to see those guys.

MikeA
04-17-2011, 08:29 AM
I did make it to the Casino Activity Center at First Counsel for the "Crosby/Nash" concert last night.

Very good. I was sitting with two ladies (probably 50 rows back right next to the sound booth), who really knew the CS&N songs, but I don't think they knew much about the vocal parts they are each responsible for. They said to me at one point "Crosby isn't carrying his part of the load is he?"

Well David doesn't get real animated when he sings (never has) and the Walrus Mustachio sort of hides his mouth so you can't really SEE him singing. But you can sure hear him! I mean, his aren't the high lead parts that Nash sings (and Nash sings them WELL TOO!) But that part underneath that David does sing just blends in so fantastically that don't even know that he's belting it out! But when the Cros backs away from the microphone to let Nash go at it solo, it is like listening to mono instead of stereo.

David may have been a bit off in the health department. I don't know. It may be just the way he is after all he's been through. He did cough or clear his throat several times but nothing was mentioned about it during the concert.

They played for right at an hour and then took a twenty minute break and then came out and played for another hour. Oh my! Can they still sing!

Besides Graham Nash (vocals, Hummingbird, Telecaster, Harmonica and Keyboards) and David Crosby (vocals, Stratocaster, what looked to be one of the Carvin Strat style guitars with the sort of Fender looking heads, and Martin 6 and 12 String) they had four other musicians on the stage.

Dean Parks (I hope I got his name right...looked him up on Youtube and it looks like the guitarist from last night) on guitar. Parks was part of the old Steely Dan group (or at least contributed a lot to their studio albums) and he was the electric lead for Crosby and Nash last night. He primarily played a trio of PRS Custom 24s but also did a number on an acoustic that I couldn't recognize because of the lighting. When introduced, in addition to noting that he was from Steely Dan, they pointed out that he was one of the most sought after studio guitarists in LA. In addition to playing the 6-strings, he played pedal steel on two or three songs.

On Keyboards, was David Crosby's son James Raymond. He really is good on piano/organ/synth and he also performed harmony vocals that I think might have filled in the parts that had to have been those of Stills. He did in intro on keyboards called "Grace" that introduced "Jesus of Rio" that Nash performed. The short haired kid is really quite good.

I did not catch the name of the Bassist but did catch the fact that he was "stolen from Jackson Brown". He certainly nailed down the bottom!

On drums was a guy from Oklahoma City. Probably a well known drummer and just "happened to be from Oklahoma" but I failed to catch his name.

I couldn't begin to name the songs. To be honest, while I've listened to them for probably 50 years (likely the 10 or so years during which I listened to them the most, I was in an altered state...and I don't mean Texas!), I have never paid attention to the song titles...just the incredible vocals.

They are still "protesting". Did a song after an introduction by Nash really torching that preacher in Florida who burned a Koran. Then blasted GE (not by name) about their billions in revenue and paying no taxes. Ironically, yesterday, I heard that GE was giving all that tax return BACK to the IRS. They came by it fairly and legally, but the public image of it made them really look bad. They did another "protest" song that David had written about Yucca Mountain...a proposed nuclear waste dump.

Their "standards" I would think were done and if I knew the names of them, there were many others because I recognized them from hearing them over the years. "Wooden Ships", "Our House" and a singalong: "Teach Your Children Well" which Graham dedicated to all the teachers out there.

By the time the concert was over, I'd devoted seven hours to the experience. The one hour drive down, a half hour killed wandering around the Casino, one hour standing in line waiting for the doors to open, another hour waiting inside the auditorium and visiting with my two new-found friends and then 2.5 hours of the concert itself and then the drive back home!

I'd say it was WELL WORTH the $42 ticket price (that's an understatement) but I wouldn't want to go through that much of at time expenditure again any time soon to see them again. My back is killing me this morning and I have an out of town tee-time with my Brother-in-law! Give it a year or so and if them return, I'm sure I'll have changed my mind!

I did some more research and found Kevin McCormick as the bass player from Jackson Brown. The guy is pretty amazing on the 4-string. He did something with the bass I hadn't seen before when they were letting each member solo during a song. He did some sort of hammeron-pulloff thing way up on the neck on the high strings...sounded like some kind of funky lead on a 6-string!

And the drummer...Steve DiStanislao. Nash sort of stated his name during applause and I didn't catch anything but Stevey D. But looking him up, I see that he was the (or one of the) drummers for David Gilmore and Pink Floyd.

He got the job done and done well without a lot of flash just as Dean did on lead guitar. Crosby really speaks highly of him.

Crosby is, sadly, absolutely off his face in this DVD, but they still manage to sound incredible. Stephen's guitar-playing is out of this world. I love the way he sort of smiles and then glances at the camera when he sings the first line. "If you smile at me, I will understand..." It makes me go a bit gooey! I remember writing in my last review that I was a little disappointed that he doesn't sing that part anymore; I've always loved it.

Graham's perpetual enthusiasm and passion is so endearing.

Here's a photo I took at the first CSN show I went to:

And this is how close I got to Graham Nash afterwards. Sigh.

Graham will be doing a book signing in Camden, London on Wednesday 9th October (just a few days after my concert.) Why oh why can't he do it on a weekend?! Gutted I won't be able to go.

Aw, too bad it's on a school day, Troub, but hopefully you'll have such an awesome experience at your concert that you'll still be floating on Cloud 9.

Wow. I've just watched an amazing documentary on Joni Mitchell, which featured interviews with David Crosby and Graham Nash. Graham Nash still looks amazing and I never knew that he and Joni had a thing going in 1969. I had a teary moment when Joni met her daughter that she had at nineteen, and discovered grandchildren she hadn't met.

GEF, they're touring around you right now. You might want to check for tickets. Troub's show is coming up on October 5 and she's got front row seats. I'm so excited for her!

The song "Our House" is about Graham and Joni's relationship.

That was so sweet of you, Cathy! Thanks. I am just dropping in quickly before I go to sleep to say that the concert last night was absolutely out of this world... I was front row, just to the right of center, in front of David Crosby, and I was just in heaven the entire night. I'm sorry I haven't been around much lately but, as some of you know, things have been really stressful and crazy with work... I desperately needed this concert. I will post a proper review when I get the chance, but I just wanted to say that all three guys sounded amazing and that I did get quite a lot of love from the stage (as PM would say!) Lots of looks and smiles, especially from Crosby who was right in front of me the whole time. The best part was near the end when we were standing at the stage. Graham Nash came over and a couple of guys were reaching their hands up to him. He shook them and then moved over to shake my hand. He leaned right over as he squeezed my hand and smiled at me and said "How are you?" I replied with "I'm good, thanks" and gave him a smile. Aaaaahhhhh. It was just the icing on the cake after such an amazing concert. I wish I could live it over and over. Believe me when I say I will be hanging onto these memories throughout this week... They closed with Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, which was absolutely perfect.

Now, if I can only work out a way to go to Graham's book signing in London on Wednesday afternoon... :inlove:

Glad you had a good time and that it lifted your spirits. I'm not surprised you got "love" from the stage. I look forward to the review!

I'm delighted you had such a great night Troub! You deserved a bit of sunshine after the last few weeks that you have had.

And I've TOLD you how to get to the signing. You WILL be there!

Don't ask how I managed to wrangle the afternoon off (I wouldn't normally do something like this, but I kind of feel like the school hasn't helped me at all and I am leaving anyway in a couple of weeks, so y'know...) but Graham did a signing today in east London and I went along. It was in a cool record store with a little table at the back of the shop and there were about fifteen/twenty people there - mostly blokes! The conversation went something like this:

Graham: [taking my hand] Hello, love. How are you? I'm Graham.
Me: [thinking "I KNOW!!"] Hi Graham. I'm great thanks. I'm Louise.
Graham: Millie?
Me: [laughing] No - Louise.
Graham: Oh! Sorry, Louise. And would you like the book signed to you, love?
Me: Yes please!
Graham: So, are you coming to the show tonight?
Me: Unfortunately not.
Graham: That's a shame, love. (I am not exaggerating with the 'love' thing! He said it after every sentence.) There you go. Oh hang on, let me dot your 'i'. [He took back my book and put a dot above the 'i' in Louise.]
Me: [laughing] How did you know I was a teacher?
Graham: [laughing] Are you? Fantastic. Lucky kids!
He handed the book to me and I said thank you. I then asked if it was okay if the staff member from the shop took a photo. He said "Of course" and I leaned down a bit closer to him and the shop woman took a couple of pics on my phone. Then I took the phone back, turned to him and said "thank you so much" and he took my hand again, said "you're welcome love, it was great to meet you" and then I went on my merry way! (I later fell over in the street and got picked up by a City banker, but that's another story...)

It was short but sweet. Really informal and relaxed. I am kicking myself that I didn't mention the Bournemouth show (especially after he asked if I was coming to the show tonight) but I am just so thrilled that I finally got to meet him properly and that I have pictures and a personalised book to keep forever. The photos are the best part. I will treasure these!

Amazing Lou! I'm delighted that his got the chance to do this. You both look great.

Now, about the banker.... Was he cute, rich, single.... All of the above.....?

Troubadour
10-08-2013, 01:41 PM
LOL! The banker was middle-aged (not that I have a problem with that usually ) and so not fanciable... but he did pick me up almost immediately and checked I was okay. He then laughed and told me I wouldn't be playing any football this weekend. Oh, the mortification... At least I didn't trip in front of Graham!

Wow! How great for you! Can you answer a question for me; with Graham saying 'love' so much, does that mean he still has an English accent? He hasn't lived there for decades!

Troubadour
10-08-2013, 06:28 PM
His accent is a bit of a transatlantic mix - I would say it's still Mancunian on the whole, but you can tell he's lived in America for a long time.

Funnily enough, at the concert he joked about that very thing. Crosby had started to imitate David Gilmour during a song intro (because he had been talking to him earlier in the day) and Graham teased Crosby with "Oh no, don't do an English accent. Even I can't do one!" It got some laughter.

I know, I know. I'm an idiot. It was right there on the tip of my tongue but then it was all quite quick and I was conscious of making sure the lady took some photos and I was also conscious of holding up the line... aaahhh. Just one of those things! I am still thrilled about both of my Graham Nash experiences this week! Pretty good week, all in all. :)
