View Full Version : Don doing Already Gone and Lyin Eyes?

Maybe this has been talked about before, but I got a 1993 Henley bootleg and it got me wondering. During his 1993 tour, Don suddenly started doing Already Gone and Lyin' Eyes (you can hear his versions of them on Henley Audio on the Fastlane (http://www.eaglesfans.com/downloads/audio/index.htm#henley)). Was this supposed to be some sort of jab at the Party of Two for doing Life in the Fast Lane? I figure it couldn't be because of Desperado since Glenn had been doing that for years, and they even had a moment of reconcilation over it when Glenn played it on Letterman in 1984 and dedicated it to Don. Do you guys think the timing and rather negative choice of songs just a coincidence?

Don was very pissed off at Geffen in 1993 and I think that was the main reason he chose to do those two Eagles songs. Don's version of Already Gone was something to see....he sang it with a lot of gusto and a clenched fist in the air. Maybe he felt some animosity toward Joe and Glenn after he heard how they were making fun of him during their shows and calling him a tree-hugger.

Hmmm - this is interesting. I knew Don had done both Lyin' Eyes and Already Gone. I like his versions of both songs. But I really never questioned his motives. I also never questioned Glenn and Joe's motives. I figured they just wanted to do these songs so they did. Don did co-write Lyin' Eyes so he certainly is entitled to perform it just as Glenn is entitled to perform Desperado and Joe and Glenn are entitled to do Life in the Fastlane. If I remember correctly, Joe told Howard Stern that Don and Glenn were both upset with him for performing Desperado on Howard's show.

Really! They were both mad at Joe? Interesting! Perhaps that song just holds a special place in their hearts or something? I mean, otherwise, why couldn't the guy play whatever he wanted?

I always got the feeling that Desperado really is special for both Don and Glenn. I feel the same way about Tequila Sunrise. This is the one song where Don and Glenn are almost always warm and fuzzy. Whenever they perform it, Don usually always looks at Glenn with this little sly smile as if they are hiding some little secret just between the two of them. But then, I may be reading too much into this - perhaps the fondness just stems from the fact that these were the first two songs they wrote together.

I can understand that feeling. It makes sense. However, on the other side of that, a cover is by definition something you do that is written by someone else. But I guess since he was covering something in the Eagles, it was offlimits.

Dreamer...I've seen that moment in TS when Don and Glenn look at each other many times and it's one of my favorites.

Yep - It's definately always one of those "puddle of goo" moments for me! http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/embarassed.gif

For me too! I tried several times to capture it on film, but only with moderate success. I liked it better when they stood for the acoustic set. Then they really turned and looked at each other. Sometimes they'd even hold up the acoustic guitars like the Everly Brothers and strum them. I'd be a huge puddle of goo on those nights. I'm sure they heard me squeal on several occasions.

I think they thought Joe really had no right to do the song since he wasn't in the band when it was written and recorded.

Don & Glenn being warm & fuzzy during Tequila Sunrise. Discuss.

I guess that really hearkens back to the good old days - their first collaborations, the beginnings of the powerhouse that from that day on would dominate the Eagles.

This the best I ever captured the moment they sing "oh and it's a hollow feeling". It's from London, 2001. I just love it.

Thank you. I was referring to the moment in the song, not the photo, but the photo is pretty good too.

Here is another example of the Tequila Sunrise thing:

Then there is this, of course:

Or it could just be they have to make sure they get the harmony right.

Hmmm - I never thought of that. I'm sure that must be it.

Wow - I've been away for a couple of days and what a nice treat to come back to. Just like I said before - seeing these screenshots has turned me into a HUGE puddle of goo! Thanks Julie and L&M. And I still think it's a "We've got a secret" moment for Don and Glenn - especially when they get to the "Oh and it's a hollow feeling" line. Oh well - I guess they're not going to tell us! :D :D :D

This is a complete tangent but... what does "dealin' friends" refer to? Does it refer to a friend who is a rival whom he has betrayed (ie "false dealing" a guy by stealing his woman), and is it guilt making him feel hollow? Or does it refer to the woman, and the hollowness of dissatisfaction he feels when she can give him no more than friendship (ie, the hand they were dealt was that of friendship rather than love). I tend towards the latter, but it's unusual way of expressing it.

I lean to your first theory, that it's about a male friend, not a woman.

And I vote for 'all of the above.' I think the line is intentionally vague so that it can infer either of these or friends in general. To me the whole song is written in that way - I always thought of it as a generalization about the way 'friendships' were back in the '70's - about how easily friends could come and go. 'Dealing friends' could be a reference to how you shuffled friendships/women like you shuffle a deck of cards. For instance, how a typical '70's evening of drinking, get stoned, and one night stands could leave you with a hollow and numb feeling. That's kinda the way it was back then. http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif

I agree with you. I think TS and Desperado are really important to them since they were the first two songs they wrote together. That's when they became a team. :D
