"Lily Was Here" was released in 1989, four years after "You Belong to the City." It is reminiscent of YBTTC in some ways but not close enough to be considered copying, I guess. Perhaps the situation is similar to the way the chorus of "Footloose (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwBbMXYDsXw)" sounds completely like a rip off of a riff from "Funk 49 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_qHU_6Ofc0)" yet apparently no one has a problem with it.

Yeah, but maybe we are being too easy on D. Stewart. Yes, I think I read somewhere to proof Plagio has to be a certain number of notes, acordes or somethink like that. However, our ears don't lie, but, anyways, no big deal. Cool.

Yep - there are a lot of similarities. Must not be close enough to present a legal problem though.

The world has changed. Seems to me that up until about fifty years ago it was quite common for composers to quote, or "steal from" other composers. Everyone used everyone's stuff ALL the time and there was no problem. Mahler quoted Beethoven, Stravinsky quoted everyone on the planet etc.etc. It seems that since rock/pop music started to emerge, people have thought that THEY invented every D major - E minor progression they may have used. "He used my two notes. What a thief!"
Having said that, as some of you may have noticed, I love KISS as well as Eagles and lots of other bands. Lately the KISS fans in the internet have been mentioning quite often one Joe Walsh song and one KISS song, saying that Paul Stanley shamelessly stole from Joe. I think in this case I might even agree! :hilarious:

Joe:

Paul Stanley hasn't played that many lead guitar parts, but on this song he plays all the guitars (as a matter of fact he's the only KISS member who plays on this! Apart from the guitars, other players are non-members.) and even one of the lead bits seems to be from Joe's song! Paul has said that the idea for this came from Springsteen's "4th Of July, Asbury Park (Sandy), but I agree with the angry KISS Army that Joe seems to have been a more likely influence!

I find it ironic that on the same album that Shandi's on, there's also a song called "Tomorrow"!

OMG chaim - you're right about that. That sounds like almost the exact same tune to these ears. I'm surprised that Joe didn't launch an investigation over that one.

It's possible that Joe hasn't even heard it, or if he has, it's an obscure KISS song that no one knows, so why bother! :hilarious: I think Shandi was rather popular in Australia though, back in 1980. Paul sings it occasionally in concert, just him and his guitar; when the band performs in Australia, I think.

It really doesn't sound anything like Springsteen's Sandy, other than the word "Shandi!" :hilarious:

No, apart from "Saaandyyyy"/"Shaaandiiii". Paul really liked the song, but they couldn't use the name "Sandy" for obvious reasons, so the producer and co-writer of the song, Vini Poncia, suggested they twist it to "Shandi". Maybe Joe's song came into the picture subconsciously.
So that I wouldn't just be hijacking the thread, I must add more specifically how I feel about the "YBTTC - LWH" connection. I didn't really hear it. I only heard a similar vibe, but I don't think that YBTTC was necessarily an influence. Could've been some other song too. I'll listen to LWH again at some point.
