So Neil's song Buffalo Springfield Again (from the Silver & Gold album) finally came true.

(Perhaps if Mark Knopfler wrote a song called Dire Straits Again we could all live in hope).

I can only speak for myself but I always knew what For What It's Worth was called.

Saw sunday's show at the Wiltern, simply amazing. To see Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay harmonize and trade licks after 43 years apart is a mindmelder. And apparently they are planning a more extensive tour this fall in more cities (have not released the dates yet...I'll keep ya posted). Here's an article:

Yes, I'd love to hear more!

The show was fantastic. Since they hadn't really played together since 1968, it was crazy watching these three legends interact both vocally (notably Stills and Richie) and instrumentally (the fierce guitar interplay of Neil and Stephen). And Joe Vitale on drums and singing harmony as well! they couldn't go wrong! They each shared vocal duties and the hometown crowd was adoring. the Wiltern is very intimate (and the crowd was very old). Richie was in fine voice and beaming, Stephen seemed relaxed played pretty much all of his guitars and Neil was hilarious and having the time of his life ("the rumors of our breakup are greatly exaggerated"). Honestly felt like a continuation than a reunion (Neil: "we're Buffalo Springfield. We're from the past".)

Setlist and highlights:

1. On the Way Home -Richie sounded great singing this neil penned classic. Neil took a verse and played harmonica. awesome opener.
2. Rock n' Roll Woman -a Stills classic, harmonies were excellent
3. Burned - a lot of Neil Young fans in the audience, this was a treat
4. A Child's Claim to Fame - Richie's ode to Neil about always quitting the band. He sounded lovely and was very energetic.
5. Do I Have to Come right Out and Say it? - Another Richie vocal of a Neil Young song
6. Go and Say Goodbye - Stills and Furay vocal blend was back! great to hear this early nugget
7. I am a Child - Neil's response to Richie's "Child's Claim to Fame". He played harmonica and the Neil fans especially were in heaven (so was I!)
8. Hot Dusty Roads - a great bluesy Stills workout.
9. Kind Woman - Richie's signature song to his wife of many years. he sounded wonderful and the audience loved it
10. Mr. Soul - Neil went apeshit playing this rocker, crowd went nuts, a real highlight
11. Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing - another Neil Young gem with Richie singing lead. Felt like 1966
12. Everybody's Wrong - Another Stills workout. Such a great guitarist, so fluid and bluesey. of course Neil's electric guitar bursts brought back that signature sound.
13. My Kind of Love - a real surprise as it was not on any of their three albums. Stills and Furay vocal coupling is back!
14. Sad Memory - quiet Furay acoustic showcase. So happy to see him back with his old bandmates.
15. Bluebird - Neil and Stills extended guitar jam in high gear. Neil was having a blast on this Stills classic. (No banjo outro though... was hoping Bernie would make an appearance, ;-))

encore:

16. Broken Arrow - Wow! Never thought they could pull this one off! Joe Vitale really added some dramatic flourishes to make this Neil Young classic a live highlight.
17. For What it's Worth - Loved watching Neil hit those classic pings on his guitar. Stills growled and snarled his way through and the cowd was singing along. awesome!
18. Rockin' in the Free World - the only non- Buffalo springfield song, but a fitting coda (with Stills taking a verse) to finish off the night with a ton of energy.

A question came up in the 'Name this Eagle' game thread about which members of the Eagles auditioned for Buffalo Springfield. I didn't know if this was being confused with Poco or if I had missed something and members of the Eagles had, if fact, auditioned for Buffalo Springfield back in the day. Is there someone here that can clarify this for me?

Dreamer - I am reading Marc Eliot's To The Limit book, and in it he says that Timothy and Randy competed for the bassist slot in Buffalo Springfield in 1970. This is just not true. Buffalo Springfield broke up in 1968. Two of its members, Jim Messina and Richie Furay, started Poco with Rusty Young. By 1969, Randy had already joined and quit Poco and they had secured Timothy. I don't think any of the Eagles auditioned for Buffalo Springfield. Maybe someone read that bit in that book and thought it was true?

Or, maybe one of the other Eagles did audition for BS (maybe Bernie?) and none of us ever heard about it (this would be surprising, on this board!!)

I guess I am the culprit who started this discussion on another thread but I got the information from Randy Meisner Biography I recently read:

This continued for four years. Finally, in 1968, Meisner once again found a way out. After playing an audition for Buffalo Springfield where he was up against Timothy B. Schmit, he was selected to replace Jim Messina in the much more established band. However, before he could enjoy his new role, Richie Furay also quit the band to form Poco with Messina. Meisner joined them. In November of 1968, the new band debuted at The Troubadour in Los Angeles. This venue was to play a large role in the formation of Meisner's future band, the Eagles, as it was the place where Glenn Frey met and befriended Don Henley. Poco's debut performance also marked the first time Rick Nelson saw Meisner play, which was to pay off for him sooner rather than later.

It's certainly possible, just weird that we have never heard of Timothy auditioning for BS, and certainly not a 2nd audition where Randy was chosen over him - seems like it would be part of their well-recited history, along with Poco and the Eagles. What biography were you reading?

Grego
03-15-2014, 08:35 PM
Yes, I agree that it is strange that this isn't readily known. In fact two articles that I have read on the history of Buffalo Springfield don't even mention either Randy or Timothy or Bernie who I once read somewhere was briefly a member of BS himself! I suppose the writer of the articles could have their facts wrong or even the dates!

I found this information by typing:

randymeisneronline.com into my Safari browser on my iPhone5.

Click on INNER SELF:ABOUT RANDY and finally click on BIOGRAPHY

It's interesting reading.

First of all, Greg, I didn't mean to imply that anyone was a culprit here. I'm glad you mentioned it because it makes for a very interesting discussion and helps us try to separate fact from fiction. Unfortunately, that may be hard to do here because we don't have any real authoritative sources. The RandyMeisnerOnline biography was written by our own Sodascouts and/or another lady that helped her put the site together and one of their sources cited was Marc Eliot's To the Limit. I don't know if Soda remembers any specifics about the how the information about this particular subject was gathered, but maybe she can shed some light on this for us.

I checked the Buffalo Springfield page on Wikipedia to see what it says about the band’s revolving bass players, but, of course, Wikipedia isn’t always accurate either. But, for what it’s worth (pun intended), here are a couple of excerpts …

In January 1967 the group took an advance from the record company and flew to New York to perform at Ondine's, a club where The Doors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Doors) would also play. It was at this time that Palmer was first arrested for possession of marijuana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_%28drug%29) and summarily deported back to Canada.

The band moved back and forth between recording sessions and live appearances on both coasts. A number of different bassists were used, such as Mike Barnes and Jim Fielder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Fielder) of the Mothers of Invention (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mothers_of_Invention). In one instance – a live performance on the television show Hollywood Palace (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Palace) – Springfield's non-bass-playing road manager held a bass with his back to the camera while the band mimed to a prerecorded track. An appearance on the The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Smothers_Brothers_Comedy_Hour) was taped on February 17, 1967, airing on February 26.[4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_Springfield#cite_note-Smothers_Brothers-4)

However, in January 1968 Palmer's second deportation for drug possession once again threw a wrench into the works. This time, guitarist and studio engineer Jim Messina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Messina_%28musician%29) was hired as a permanent replacement on bass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bass_guitar). With Palmer gone for good, Young also began to appear less and less frequently, often leaving Stills to handle all the lead guitar parts at concerts. Recording sessions were booked, and all the songs that appeared on their final album were recorded by the end of March, usually with Messina producing, but the group was clearly on the verge of disbanding. In April 1968, after yet another drug (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recreational_drugs) bust involving Young, Furay, Messina and Eric Clapton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Clapton), the group decided to break up.

So, to me, the jury’s still out about this. I guess it’s possible that Randy may have auditioned against Jim Messina when Bruce Palmer left in January 1968. But, I have to agree with MC on one point though. It would seem to me that if Randy and Tim’s had competed for the position, it would be pretty widely known considering the rest of their history.

I wrote the Randy bio myself about 7 years ago and Eliot's book was one of my sources, as I listed at the bottom. I'm not sure if that's the only place it's stated. If so, I'll change it. We know Eliot is often inaccurate.
