Per EaglesFanatic's suggestion in another thread:

If you could make your own "best of" compilation of 15 songs for Joe Walsh's solo stuff, what would be on the CD?

Well - I got around to making my list of Joe's 'very best'. The only way I was able to narrow this down to 15 songs was to not include any James Gang songs. So here is my Joe solo list, although they are not ranked in order of preference ...

1.) Turn to Stone
2.) Meadows
3.) Rocky Mountain Way
4.) Welcome To the Club
5.) Help Me Thru the Night
6.) County Fair
7.) Life's Been Good
8.) All Night Long
9.) A Life of Illusion
10.) Rosewood Bitters
11.) Good Man Down
12.) At the Station
13.) Indian Summer
14.) I Can Play That Rock and Roll
15.) Ordinary Average Guy

My favorite James Gang songs that weren't included are Tend My Garden, Midnight Man, Funk #49, and Walk Away.

As I've done for the rest of the guys, I thought it would be interesting, so I compiled the results of this thread to see what the top vote-getters were. So from those who have made a list in this thread, here is a list of Joe's songs that got the most votes up to this point ...

1. Turn To Stone
2. Life's Been Good
3. Rocky Mountain Way
4. Meadows
5. A Life of Illusion
6. Help Me Thru the Night
7. The Confessor
8. All Night Long
9. Ordinary Average Guy
10. I Can Play That Rock and Roll
11. Walk Away
12. Indian Summer
13. Welcome To the Club

So if my calculations are correct, the only song to make everyone's list is Turn To Stone, and Life's Been Good is the only song that made everyone's list but one. As I ask in the other threads, anyone find any surprises here?

I really like Tend My Garden, so I'm surprised that it's not on more peoples' lists.

Only that I seem to be the only one who included Second Hand Store, which I absolutely love.

I could accept about any of these lists. I was gratified to see "Confessor" make it on a majority of the lists. It really is one of my very favorites of Joe's.

Confessor
County Fair
Rocky Mt Way
Meadows
Rosewood Bitters (acoustic version)
Bomber
Funk #49
Walk Away
Turn To Stone
Life of Illusion
Midnight Man
Indian Summer
Welcome To The Club
At The Station
Tend My Garden
Ashes The Rain And I

I'm a little surprised at all the Indian Summer adds, not that it's not a great song, but kinduva hidden "hit". I am surprised there's not more for At The Station, also a great song IMO, or ODAAT.
I could make a list everyday and it would be different, depending on my mood and what was the deal at the moment. I have a lot of "Favorites"...but Confessor & Turn To Stone would always be on my list.

I agree about At the Station - it definitely made my list. However, while I like The Confessor, I have to confess it's not one of my favorites. The biggest surprise to me is the omission of Funk #49 from the list and to a lesser extent, Tend My Garden. I’m guessing it’s because they are James Gang songs, although Walk Away did make the list. In my original post, I did not include James Gang songs, but I did add my favorites at the end of my post to give them honorable mentions.

since the concert Monday night, Hubby has been looking up Joe songs. He says Joe is his favorite.

Anyway, he found ILBT :) I had forgotten about that song. It is absolutely too funny.

I can't believe he actually performs that song anymore! :hand:

I'm often one of those people that ends up defending the Eagles. I usually do it by reminding people of what amazing lyrics they have. Then on more then one occasion I've found myself saying at the end of the conversation, "At least they don't sing about women's breasts!!" The last time I did that was the last time because I remembered this song of Joe's and well, it's not my favorite. I'm afraid he gets remembered more for those type of lyrics then he does for lyrics like Collage or Song for Emma, etc....

I too am shocked that Joe still performs ILBT.

Well - I remember going to solo shows where guys in the audience are yelling out for him to sing the song, so it is a crowd-pleaser for a lot of folks. He did play it at a couple of shows I was at in Atlantic City a few years ago, but IIRC he didn't play it the last time I saw him in Northern VA. :hmm: now I'm going to have to go back and check the setlists for those shows to see if I'm remembering correctly. :?

No doubt about it! It's a very popular song. It's a funny song. I just don't think it's his best work. I'm just wish that people would take him a little more serious based on his full body of work.

I don't think he performs it, we just found it. I thought it was quite funny. Joe has a totally fun sense of humor and as a woman, I don't get offended by it.

If you read Dreamer's post above, it states that he has indeed performed it in the last few years.

While I can listen to it, it always makes me think Sexy Girl isn't so bad after all.

Midnight Visitor

Yep! Oregon 2012 he performed it. I also saw at least two other live clips of that song from 2012 on youtube.

He still performs it on occasion, unfortunately. Yes, I'm sure certain kinds of men find it terrific, and those men are usually the most vocal (and the most drunk).

I just sit there and cringe until it's over whenever I've been subjected to it live.

Yeah, yeah, I know. It's a joke.

It also happens to suck.

Sorry, Joe! Luckily songs that bad are the exception, not the rule!

Hubby spent a good deal of time last night loading up his IPOD all Walsh songs. He kept saying, "I didn't know Walsh did this"

A couple months ago, I played "The Confessor" for him and he didn't like it. Now after seeing Joe in Concert he says it is a great song. Men...why can't they just admit we know what we are talking about.

He sang it at Wolftrap last August (2012). My friend who you met that evening was not amused. Which made it highly entertaining for me.

Thanks for that VA - I couldn't remember if he did ILBTs at the Wolftrap or not, but I was thinking he didn't. As we say, guess that's what I get for thinking!

And Soda, I need to also update my 'Best of ...' list since the release of Analog Man. I don't know what I'm gonna cut though.

I can relate to not being enamored by The Confessor - if you notice, it didn't make my 'My of ...' list. I will say that the song has grown on me and I appreciate it more than I once did, but the melody doesn't really grab me.
