This topic came up in chat - what is your favorite Don solo song? Mine is Boys of Summer, followed by Heart of the Matter, Not Enough Love in the World, Talking to the Moon, and Last Worthless Evening.

Mine is Heart Of The Matter followed by Taking You Home. I love it when he sings soulful ballads. To be honest I don't know all his solo works. I really need to catch up on this. Glenn always keeps me off. http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/embarassed.gifI have four albums but I've heard only Inside Job so far.

Ooooh, thanks for the tip, Nancy. Right now I'm listening to The Last Worthless Evening, sounds great! This is the kind of music which I love. I need to burn these albums on CD finally!

Oooh, it's hard to choose!

Boys of Summer and Heart of the Matter would be at the top, then End of the Innocence, Last Worthless Evening and Dirty Laundry.

Wow Brooke - sometimes I think we really must be twins separated at birth. My top 5 list is identical to yours except I'd move Dirty Laundry into the number 3 slot. ;)

Oh you must his solo stuff is fabulous.

I have to say my songs vary as far as favourites go. Constant favourites are The Heart of the Matter, Lilah, My Thanksgiving, Everything is Different Now and The End of the Innocence. That said I'm also listening to Miss Ghost, Annabel and Talking to the Moon a lot at the moment :)

And how about The Last Worthless Evening? I have to say I fell in love with that song from the first note! http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/happy.gif

I love it too but I put down the songs I probably listen to most regularly. There are a lot of his songs that I love and then there are the ones that crawl under your skin and require you to listen to them frequently!

EasyFeeling
11-23-2006, 09:21 AM
And The Last Worthless Evening is one of them for me. http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/happy.gif As well as Heart Of the Matter and Taking You Home. AND Not Enough Love In The World. Love these songs. I burnt them in a row so I can listen to these frequently. http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/wink.gif

Here's my baker's dozen - because I realized I couldn't stop at just 10:

13. They're Not Here, They're Not Coming (The lone representative from Inside Job - it's goofy, but catchy. Lately, if I'm not singing "Nobody's Business" - see #3 - I'm singing this one to myself as I while away the hours at work)
12. Not Enough Love in The World (I like this song for a couple of reasons, not least of which is when he hits those high notes when he sings, "You don't have to prove nothin' to nobody just take good care of yourself." God, that voice of his...)
11. Lilah (such a sweet song and like many of his songs, the lyrics are timeless: "We spend so much time weeping and wailing and shaking our fists, Creating enemies that really don't exist.")
10. Sunset Grill (Again, that voice....that plaintive wail "Don't worry girl, I'm going to stick by you..." Seriously, this guy could sing me the U.S. tax code and I'd melt!)
9. A Month of Sundays (It's all about the lyrics with this one. It reminds me of one of my favorite Eagles tunes, The Last Resort, with its melancholy lyrics about change.)
8. All She Wants to Do is Dance (This song makes even me want to dance and I can't dance worth beans.)
7. Talking to the Moon (Simply beautiful)
6. Dirty Laundry (Oh, those bubble-headed bleach blondes! I swear whenever I see Paula Zahn on TV, I think of this song. Does anyone else sing this one with a loud, angry voice and a scowl on her/his face like I do? :x )
5. The End of the Innocence (Don Henley + Bruce Hornsby = sheer genius)
4. The Heart of the Matter (Some of the most beautifully poignant lyrics ever written: "How can love survive in such a graceless age?")
3. Nobody's Business (I can't stop singing this song! I just got the I Can't Stand Still CD this week and absolutely fell in love with this song. In fact, I'm listening to it right now. :D )
2. The Last Worthless Evening (sexy beyond belief)

And, finally, drum roll please, Don :drummer:

1. The Boys of Summer (I don't think any of his other songs will ever take it's number one spot. And it's definitely in my top ten of all-time favorite songs by any artist.)

I'm sorry for being so long-winded, but I just love talking about his music.

Ive always been a dreamer

I enjoyed your analysis of the songs, Katherine. I had already indicated earlier that my top five Don solo songs are:

1. Boys of Summer
2. Heart of the Matter
3. Dirty Laundry
4. End of the Innocence
5. Last Worthless Evening

Since this thread has been revived, and others listed more than five songs, I'm going to list my next five favorites. In order, they are ...

6. All She Wants To Do Is Dance
7. You Don't Know Me at All
8. Lilah
9. Long Way Home
10. Taking You Home

Yeah - I want to add to mine, too! I like the "countdown" effect so I'll start with #10 as well. However, these do occasionally change depending on my mood!

Honorable Mention: Dirty Laundry: I remember how this song brought the house down the first time I saw Don in Chicago in 2005. So catchy!

10. A Month of Sundays: So poignant. He really makes you feel the guy's pain.

9. All She Wants to Do Is Dance: Another catchy number - and I just love that line about "Don't come back here Yankee'... but if I ever do.. I'll bring more money!" LOL

8. I Will Not Go Quietly: This rocks so hard. I didn't realize how great it was until I saw Don do it live. It was amazing - so fierce!

7. Lilah: Absolutely beautiful.

6. Last Worthless Evening: This is something a lot of us ladies wish a guy would tell us, and something probably a lot of guys relate to that line about getting the nerve up to tell someone how he feels. Plus, gotta love the tune and the way he pours himself into the vocal.

5. End of the Innocence: Mournful - political without being harsh - another song that makes you feel so much.

4. Not Enough Love in the World: I really love the melody of this one. Always have, even before I knew who sang it.

3. Talking to the Moon: I like this more every time I listen to it. The part that really puts it over the top in terms of quality is when he takes it up a notch and starts high in this really powerful way "I WAS JUST talking to the moon."

2. Heart of the Matter: Beautiful melody, great message, moving song. I remember listening to this one time in the car on the way home from college in 1995 and just thinking "This song is amazing." That was when I was still a casual fan, but it was the main reason I bought "Actual Miles." Especially since there was another song on it called...

1. Boys of Summer: AWESOME! The way the song rises when he goes into "I can see you..." - great vocal - great tune - great video. This was what first made known to me the name "Don Henley" (I had no idea he used to be in the Eagles).

Oooo you guys made me want to update my list! I love the coutdowns and the summary of why you love the song! I shall follow in your footsteps with my update ;)

#10- All She Wants to do is Dance: I know a lot of people think it's dated, but I don't care! It's a catchy, fun song! Don sounds great, and dated or not....I love it musically!

#9 -My Thanksgiving: It's not necessarily one that I listen to over and over again, but I remember the first time I hear the lines "the trouble with you and me my friend is the trouble with this nation, too many blessings...too little appreciation" I thought.....wow.....how true are those words. It instantly became a favorite of mine based on lyrics alone....let alone the fact that Don sounded amazing as always!

#8 -End of the Innocence: Beautiful music, lyrics, and performance! The only thing is......when he first sang the chorus......I think i thought he was singing about something the song probably wasn't about

#7 -Taking You Home: Love it! It almost has a bluesy tinge to it and I love the melody! I can't explain what it is about some melody's that I love....but this is it! I know some think it's cheesy, but I think it's a beautiful song.

#6- Everybody Knows: I know I'm probably the only one who LOVES this song, but I can't get enough of the catchy beat! I LOVE the bass line in it! It's kinda funky and Don just sounds fabulous on it!

#5 -I Will Not Go Quietly: Hello.......I want him to wrap his loving arms around the small of my back (ok ok so it's not that small ;) ) :D Need I say more? I LOOOVE the sound of his voice when he sings that verse!

#4 - Last Worthless Evening: When I first listened to this one I remember thinking how passionate Don sounded. He doesn't just sing......he pours emotion into the song. As Katherine said......just an incredibly sexy song and performance! :D

#3 - Heart of the Matter: Lyrically.....probably my favorite! I remember hearing this song for the first time and turning down the cd player after it ended......sitting in silence for several minutes just thinking......wow....what powerful lyrics. It's only listed behind the 1 & 2 spots for me because a) I can't stop singing along with #2.....and #1 was my first love ;)

#2 - Boys of Summer: Such a classic! I know for most people this would be #1, but you see....#1 is what made me fall in love with Don AND the Eagles so it must remain my #1 ;) As Soda mentioned though, i love the way BOS builds into the chorus but my favorite lines are the classics "out on the road today I saw a deadhead sticker on a cadillac....a little voice inside my head said don't look back, you can never look back." I always remember on the F1 dvd that Joe sings along on the don't look back, you can never look back part. Sheer perfection this song is! Oh......and the storytellers performance.....*drool*

#1 - Dirty Laundry: HAS to be my favorite! When someone put in the F1 dvd a couple of years ago at my job.....I heard this song and thought that is SUCH a catchy song and he has a fabulous voice! I then purchased and watched the entire dvd and fell in love with the eagles, and more particularily.....Don Henley. ;) It has that driving beat that I love! The intro, when the bass comes in right after that intro, the guitar solos, the blasting lyrics, Don's defiant singing.......incredible!

**Honorable Mentions:
Not Enough Love in the World - simply gorgeous!
How Bad Do You Want It - LOVE the sax!
New York Minute - Some of the lyrics are cheesy, I know....but there are many lines that everyone should pay attention to!
Sunset Grill - As previously mentioned...."don't worry girl, I'm gonna stand by you....." wow! such a gorgeous crystal clear voice!

(how's THAT for long winded Katherine ;) )

#8 -End of the Innocence: Beautiful music, lyrics, and performance! The only thing is......when he first sang the chorus......I think i thought he was singing about something the song probably wasn't about

Don't feel bad. Don was deliberately making a metaphorical parallel between the end of the country's innocence and the end of a woman's "innocence" - well, at least that's what I've always assumed. Has he ever said anything about it? The video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnOP1WKTiLc) certainly leads one to that conclusion.

I also love Taking You Home - "This love... is like nothing I have ever known" - and "Everybody Knows" has a cool beat.

This is my previous answer. I think it still stands. Again it appears that I'm better off not doing analysis. :?

If I were to give any honourable mentions they would be:

Love Rules
Lilah
The Last Worthless Evening
They're Not Here, They're Not Coming
Long Way Home

And Maleah, regarding Don's version of Everybody Knows - the version I heard doesn't have the sardonic gloom of the original version by Leonard Cohen. There is nothing wrong with it but the original is superior.

Just going thru some audio and video stuff on onlinecentral. I absolutely LOVE the version of "Hold On" by Don Henley and Steve Winwood from All Star Garage Band. I have always loved that song by Sam and Dave, have been a big fan of Steve Winwoods, and I think Don & Steve do it great justice. My question is-does anyone know if there is an audio that I can download of it for my Ipod? Or is there a way to get the audio from the video to download? I'm absolutely worthless when it comes to converting files and such. Does anyone else have a clue?

Willie, I'm not the best computer guru, but there is a free downloadable program called freecorder, which lets you record mp3 versions of whatever you are listening to on your computer. It's great for keeping streamed radio. I have used it to archive Eagles interviews in the last year and it's simple and effective.

Burned an 80 min CD-R to play in the kitchen while I'm baking, prior to getting Actual Miles and his Best of Collection, and I ended up with the same first 10 songs of both those albums and then had room for about 5 more songs.

1. Talking to the Moon
2. Dirty Laundry
3. Boys of Summer
4. All She Wants to do is Dance
5. Not Enough Love in the World
6. Sunset Grill
7. Leather and Lace
8. End of the Innocence
9. Last Worthless Evening
10. New York Minute
11. I Will Not Go Quietly
12. Heart of the Matter
13. Taking You Home
14. For My Wedding
15. Everything is Different Now

And now I have to figure out how I'm going to fit Garden of Allah and You Don't Know Me at All into this mix...

Without a doubt, Heart of the Matter. The rest come in second, depending on the mood I'm in on any given day, but HOTM is simply amazing. Besides being a great song, it came out at a time in my life when I could totally relate to it. I remember listening to it and thinking that if I could speak in rhyme, it was a song I could have written.

Seeing Don perform it live this past Feb. was definitely worth the drive to Atlantic City.

I also found that I really liked the new song he covered "it dont matter to the sun". You could hear a pin drop when he sang it.

I was thinking about this recently. Right now I think my top ten from his solo career would be like this:

1. The Heart Of The Matter
2. The Boys Of Summer
3. The End Of The Innocence
4. Train In The Distance
5. Dirty Laundry
6. A Month Of Sundays
7. New York Minute
8. The Cost Of Living
9. The Last Worthless Evening
10. Long Way Home
Honourable Mention: If Dirt Were Dollars

My top three has not changed in a long time, and it's unlikely to change any time soon - I really firmly believe these are the best three songs Don has recorded as a solo artist. There are very, very few albums where they wouldn't stand out, they are that good, and it's not often I can truly say that about music from a band member's solo career. I give top spot to The Heart of the Matter. As great as the other two are, I think THOTM just edges them out. It's such a wonderfully poignant and timeless track.

There wasn't a lot between Train In The Distance (IMO the best song from Cass County) and Dirty Laundry, which round off the top five. The lower rankings do move around a bit more, so this is just how I feel right now. I have to say I personally favour A Month Of Sundays to the hits from BTPB aside from BOS - I sense Don feels a real connection with the man in the song and his passion really shows in his performance as well as in the superb lyrics. The Cost Of Living is the other Cass County song in my top 10. It's the best duet on the album for me, easily, has the emotional weight that characterises most of Don's best solo songs and with all that has happened this year and the people we have lost (including Merle Haggard himself, as well as Glenn) it has become even more resonant. I give my honourable mention to If Dirt Were Dollars, which I think is one of Don's most underrated solo tracks. I love the lyrics - lines like 'she looked at me uncomprehendingly, like cows at a passing train' are classic Don.

One difference between Don solo and the Eagles is that for some reason I am more decisive in deciding which solo songs I like best. Picking a top 10 for the Eagles is more difficult for me as I feel I'm snubbing more greats that I'd love to include, whereas with Don's solo albums I think I can pick ten that are my true favourites and it doesn't change as much.

I can't believe I haven't done this before!!! But then again there are so many Don songs that I love it's really hard to cut them down to ten. There are a few on your list JCL that I'm happy to see as some of them are my favourites as well but I actually like the songs that are known but not the big headliners. Four of my top ten are actually from ICSS - I just LOVE that album....so here goes.

1. Long Way Home. I would just DIE happy if I ever heard him sing this live but since he's never ever done it my chances of an early grave are slim!
2.Talking To The Moon. Since I don't live in Texas and can't afford to go there I don't think I'll be hearing this live either - have to watch Inside Job DVD and dream.
3.Train in the distance. There's just something about this song that gets to me every time I hear it...very emotional.
4.Miss Ghost. Don's sexiest song EVER!!!! I don't care if it's about drugs or temptations of the flesh, I LOVE it!!
5.Lilah. It reminds me that Don has a soft spot for Ireland and well, enough said...
6.Younger Man. This could have been written for me - I may be over twenty years younger than Don but he's THE MAN :inlove:
7.Dirty Laundry. Never get tired of hearing that opening beat. My brother loved this song from its first release and introduced me to 'the Don'. :)
8.The Heart of the Matter. What can I say? Don at his lyrical best....just fabulous.
9.Boys of Summer. My first glimpse of the gorgeousness that is DH. That video remains forever etched on my brain.
10.Taking You Home. What a gorgeous soulful song and again it reminds me of Don's sentimental, soft side. I really love the end when the backing singers and music just fade out.

....okay, you see it is hard to leave out songs. Honourable mentions to The Last Worthless Evening, You Don't Know Me At All, Goodbye to A River and Damn it Rose.

As I said, I realise I've left out obvious ones like EOTI and SG, NYM but these are my particular favourites.
