View Full Version : What's your name?

sodascouts
02-09-2011, 06:57 PM
A very wise member of our board had the idea of making a thread where people who wanted to share their real names could do so.

This is largely to help people keep track of who's who since we sometimes use real names in posts to address one another instead of usernames, and it's not always immediately clear which user the real name belongs to unless one already knows the person.

This is entirely voluntary. If you want your name listed, just reply to this thread and I'll add you to this first post - cross-indexed and everything!

I try not to use people's real names unless they have them in their signature (as I do), but I know I'm guilty of using some names without permission, only because I've learned them over time by reading them in posts.

I suggested it, but it hadn't anything at all to do with "wisdom". More to do with stupidity! I'm HORRIBLE with names but feel awkward typing at someone and calling them Mr/Ms/EaglesnestSwoonerPerson. Bob and Jane are a lot easier to type.

I am appreciative of the voluntary participation. We're a pretty close-knit community and I already feel taht I am on a first name basis with most everyone here who posts. I just can't remember all the first names <LOL>

This is hilarious and I REALLY hate to admit it:

I saw four web pages of posts in this thread and was having trouble finding the post where an individual name was listed. So I started a spreadsheet, going from post to post setting up a crossreference.

Then I got to the LAST post in the thread and found that Nancy had already done exactly that!

I have my options set to show the most current post first, so post #1 is the LAST one in my browser <LOL>

I'm happy to say though that my list matched Nancy's exactly <ROTF>

Actually, it looked IDENTICAL Soda. In fact, as soon as I saw the list you'd put together, I just deleted the one I made.

Oh well, it gave me something to do during a teleconference! Usually, I just go on mute (and pray that it's working!) and pick up a guitar and noodle some unfamiliar scale pattern. Once, my phone did get clicked off of mute during a meeting. I was plugged in and really gettin' it on. When I heard them complaining on the phone, I shut it off (maybe 3 seconds of 100 DB entertainment!). Told them it was my computer's "alarm" going off reminding me to take my meds. I think they bought it.

It's fun to hear how some people came up with their online names. Mine, oddly enough, originally had nothing to do with my favorite band.

When my daughter was in 4th grade, her class was studying Native American culture. She created a puppet for a story she wrote about a Native American boy meeting a legendary character. I forgot the boy's name, but the title of the story was "XXXX and The Windeagle." At the time, I was looking for a screen name and fell in love with it. It stuck.

As noted earlier, my real name is Brenda.

It's really interesting to hear how people came up with their usernames! Karen, yours has a very sweet origin.

When I was choosing mine I just wanted a word that I liked, that was somehow linked to the Eagles. I like the folksy, poetic, free vibe. I'm really glad that I picked it. I love the meaning of the word and it kind of encapsulates not just the Eagles, but all of the other music I love (that whole Troubadour/Laurel Canyon scene). James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, CSNY, Gram Parsons, Kris Kristofferson... It seems to suit me, I think!

I noticed some people are saying where their usernames are from...

Thirsty and hot is part of a lyric from Victim of Love...
"a room full of noise and dangerous boys still makes you thirsty and hot"

I'm a photographer and I name a lot of my photos from band lyrics or songs, and I have at least a handful named from Eagles' tunes..including thirsty & hot, in between the dark and the light, one of these nights, etc.

Since my name is Tiffany, I was actually going to maybe make the username TiffanyTwisted here, but I saw there was already at least one of those here...in some variation at least...and I know it would be confusing even if I made it slightly different.

I do that with avatars rather than photos because photos need to have practical names (you need to be able to find them). My avatars are stored on a CD & are easy to scroll through. This current avatar has an uninteresting name, though; it's just called 'Recording'.

Debbie = Houston Baby

Of course, my name comes from THE LONG RUN. And there is another reason I picked "Houston Baby" other than the obvious one of being from Houston. I was at the Eagles concert in Houston in June 2010. A few times during the concert when the guys would change guitars between songs & the crowd was quiet, Glenn would run up to the mic or run by it and shout "Houston baby" just like in the song. The crowd would then erupt!

He was so adorable doing that & I LOVED it!! SO CUTE!!!!

About my name, Toni...I understand that the name Tony is always short for "Anthony" - that the name "Tony" doesn't exist as such. Here in Finland we have both names "Toni" and "Anttoni". Is "Toni" always a female name in English-speaking countries? Here in Finland it's both a female and male name, although it's rare that I hear about a woman named Toni. It's a pretty common name among men. "Anttoni" is a male name here.

New Kid In Town
12-02-2017, 01:45 PM
Hi Chaim ! I can't speak for other countries but here in the US "Toni" is always female, usually short for
Antoinette . "Tony" is always male and short for Anthony, Antonio or Anton.
This sounds crazy, but I love watching ski jumping and I knew a number of Finish, Icelandic and Scandinavian ski jumpers are named "Toni". I loved watching that one guy from Finland - lol.

That's a pretty name, Daniela.

All the Eagles boards, FB pages, etc that I've visited are very much female majority. I wonder why?

That's true in general though, at least in my experience, with bands ranging from Led Zeppelin, Yes, The Doors and Morrissey/The Smiths. Those boards (except for The Doors) had more men than we seem to have here on The Border, but they are still majority female.

Never really noticed this thread before... but I'll play!

CAinOH - My name is Cheryl.

Actually, my name is Cheryl Ann (never use my middle name, just initial), one of those poor unfortunate women who were named after a tugboat from a television show in the mid-fifties. Seriously, Google the popularity of the name "Cheryl Ann" and it was one of the top names from the mid-fifties until about 1960. I asked my Mom once how they came up with my name and she said, "Ask your father." Oohh... yeah... So I asked my father and he said, "You were named after a tugboat." I looked at him like he was crazy and he shrugged and said, "There was this television show where a guy ran around solving crimes in his tugboat named Cheryl Ann." Okay, by that time I was sure he was certifiable. A few years ago, I Googled it. Oh. my. goodness. It was true. Dang.

I have since embraced my inner tugboat, purchased season one of Waterfront with Preston Foster as John Herrick, captain of the tug Cheryl Ann and I even have a scale model of said tug in a display cabinet in my living room.

But, really... Dang.

Well, these guys mention the car in "Hotel California" but not me.

I also have a short story.
My whole name is Marķa de las Mercedes. It's a Spanish queen name. This queen died very young, she was only 16.

My parents had a LP of a folk singer. There was a song entitled "Romance de la reina Mercedes" I was a very shy girl and when I listened to this song surrounded by my family I blushed  when I heard my name.

sodascouts
10-14-2018, 04:30 PM
That is a very nice story!

There is no special story attached to my name, really. When my mother was a child, she would sometimes pretend to be a famous actress, and she would call herself "Nancy Kay Superstar." When I was born, she chose the name "Nancy Kay" for her second child.

I was actually going to be "Karen Kay" because my dad liked the name Karen, but my last name also begins with a "K" and in the South, we like monograms. Monogrammed sweaters, monogrammed bags - monograms are everywhere. A monogram sporting the initials KKK (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ku_Klux_Klan) would not make the right kind of statement here. Therefore, my younger sister got the name "Karen" and her middle name begins with an "L."
