It's official---The Cars new album will be released May 10th and is called Move Like This. The first single is called Sad Song and will be released next month. I've heard about a minute of it and snippets of a couple others from the album on their Facebook official page and they have the good ol' Cars sound. No mistaking it. If you're interest, here's the FB link.

Here's a brief mention about the album release.

http://thephoenix.com/BLOGS/onthedownload/archive/2011/02/02/new-cars-album-quot-move-like-this-quot-gets-street-date.aspx

I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am but I'm also very bittersweet about it. From what I hear, Benjamin will be on it in previously unreleased material. I am so thankful that they did not try to replace him but that the band is just the 4 remaining members and Greg is playing bass on the new stuff.

Look what I preordered this morning, with bittersweet tears in my eyes.

http://www.amazon.com/Move-Like-This-Cars/dp/B004NTMNB8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1298037705&sr=1-1

It's also being put on vinyl so guess there will be 2 copies being sent to my address.

What I read lately in Rolling Stone mag is that Benjamin will not be present on the new album like was originally reported. Here's what was said this month in RS....

""I was aware that on half of the new songs, Ben would have done better than I did," Ocasek concedes. "But we never wanted anybody from the outside." Orr was actually present, in spirit, at many sessions: Hawkes played one of his old basses, now owned by Robinson. "Ben would have been there if he had been alive," Hawkes says. "That's the only way we could think about it."

and:

"And he's ready to do his best when it's time to sing "Drive." "People would
just say, 'He doesn't sing it as good as Ben, but what the f*ck — he's the guy who wrote it.'"

Anxiously looking forward to May 10th and I hear that the first song will be released next month.

Thank you Soda. I was actually getting ready to PM you and ask if you would do that.

I've listened to Blue Tip 3 times in a row and just played it for Larry. His eyes got all big and all he could say was "WOW"!! It's like listening to any of the old Cars albums.

I've been on Cars cloud 9 all day since I started my day by preordering my album and cd. And now this. I actually got all emotional while placing the order, again while on my Benjamin Orr forum which is of course, all abuzz with the goings on and again when I got the YouTube video emailed to me a bit ago. It's really bittersweet knowing Benjamin isn't here for it all but somehow I bet he's been a part of the whole process. 24 years to wait for a new Cars album is a long time (not quite 27 like my last long awaited album) but it is going to be so worth it if the rest of the album is anything like Blue Tip!!!

I can't tell you how excited I am! You're right FP, it's another LROOE for me!!!!

Love towards the beginning when he says that he never would have ever considered bringing someone in to replace Benjamin. He also says that if Benjamin had been with us, he would have sang at least half of the songs on the album.

New interview with Elliot Easton about the new album, the tour and Benjamin.
http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/the-cars-elliot-easton-on-bands-comeback-album-move-like-this-426673

Love this part in particular:

So once David found out that it was to be the original band – of course, Ben couldn't be involved – he was interested.
"Then he was interested, yes. Obviously, as you said, Ben couldn't be involved. When it came time to think about working together as The Cars, there was never any question that it would be just the four of us. We weren't going to bring anyone else in to the band.
"It was hard not having Ben around. There were many, many times when we all missed him. I remember when we used to do background vocals, for instance - and it was usually Ben, Greg and myself standing around a mic - so during those times on this record when we did background parts, it felt very strange not to have Ben there. There are so many other things, too - his sense of humor, his bass playing… He was just a great guy. Everything about him, everything he did…it was all missed."

Can I say how freakin' excited I am for 2 weeks from tomorrow to get here!?!?!

Hence, the new avi and signature. I made the signature using the newest publicity picture of The Cars but it just didn't feel right without my beloved Benjamin being a part of this also, so I figured he'd make a great avi because he would have been here with the other guys had he'd not been taken from us 10 years ago. This is the first time I've ever had anyone other than Timothy in those spots since joining this board but this is almost like the anticipation that I had for LROOE. I promise it's only for a couple of weeks then Timothy is coming back for sure!!

That's so true! When someone uses an avi for a long time, you being to expect to see it by their posts, and it throws you when it's not there. I remember when we were celebrating the release of Tim's Expando and all these folks had Tim avatars - including myself - it was so confusing! lol

BTW I never realized how glam Benjamin was at one point! I'm used to his "Drive" look.

I will probably change my avatar to a Stevie avatar the week her album comes up (which is the week after next).

I'm very excited for you, Willie and still crossing my fingers that you will be able to get to one of their shows.

As far as changing AV's - I used to change mine until Smokin' Hot came along, and all the Glenn girls threatened to steal it from me if I changed it. It's been so long now that I think if I changed mine, I would get so confused, I'd forget how to post.

As people know I had a Mark Knopfler av & related sig a couple of weeks ago & will probably do that again in August for his birthday (although having said that my wallpaper this week is a VERY nice screen shot). I need to vent for a bit to some of you that will understand.

You all know that I'm a huge fan of The Cars (pretty much my 2nd favorite group ever!) and one of the main reasons was the late Benjamin Orr. You also know I am a member of another community for Benjamin Orr called The Legacy. There has been some major controversy over there regarding the new album and mainly Ric Ocasek getting the band back together after all these years since Benjamin is gone and can't be involved, even tho they did not replace him and have repeatedly said they did that because it just wouldn't be The Cars with a different bass player. A lot of it stems from the fact that there supposedly was a fight between Benjamin and Ric that caused the Cars break up 24 years ago.

It's gone so far as to have the person who runs the community to publish a message saying she was starting a boycott of everything for the current Cars, albums, concerts, etc.... and asked others to join in. Of course there are those that have jumped on the band wagon and just a hand full of us that respectfully declined. A lot of these people are friends on Facebook and of course it has spilled into there also. They are just bashing Ric horribly and it's very upsetting for someone like me who has always been a Cars fan, not just a Benjamin fan. I'm about ready to hit ignore on all of them until it all boils over.

What really makes me angrier than anything is the fact that 99.99% of the articles, interviews, etc, that have been published are very nice and respectful in the way The Cars & Ric are handling it all regarding Benjamin's absence. There was one article about a week ago that really got everyone started that was pretty negative but at the end it actually said that it was very edited so I just figured they were trying to make Ric look selfish and mean (we all know how that goes here!).

Here's the latest interview with Ric that is just so heartwarming.

http://www.spinner.com/2011/05/11/the-cars-move-like-this/

A few quotes from this one....

"Why did you decide to just go out with four members?

I didn't think Ben was replaceable. It just wouldn't have been us. I couldn't imagine having another member and calling it the Cars, having an outside person to do singing or bass playing. It just did not feel right. "

and...

"Were there any moments during the recording where you specifically felt Ben's absence?

Most certainly. Especially when he didn't sing half the songs and I had to do it all [laughs]. I was like, "Whoa, I have to do that. I forgot about that part." I remember the first day we started rehearsing to do the record -- "Oh, yeah, somebody's missing. It's Ben. He's missing. It's just the four of us now." We didn't dwell on it or harp on it but everybody felt that "Oh, gosh, yeah, it's just the four of us now."

and...

"Is this album a tribute to him?

I would have to say no. We love him but we didn't do a tribute. I did a song for him, 'Silver,' on one of my solo albums, 'Nexterday.' I wrote a thing about him which was pretty autobiographical."

Does that sound like a man who doesn't give a sh*t whether Ben's gone or not? Not to me but some people just have to make controversy even when there's none to be had!!!

Thanks for letting me vent!!!

Brooke

Willie, that's too bad. It sure sounds to me like the remaining members are being very respectful of Ben.

Ive always been a dreamer
05-12-2011, 11:31 AM
I'm with you too, Willie! I'm not familiar wth the band's history, but from everything I've read, it sounds like the band is handling this in a very classy and respectful way. You are right that some people just seem to thrive on controversy. I wonder what these same people would be saying if the band had decided to replace Benjamin? Wow - I can do without all that drama!

sodascouts
05-12-2011, 12:17 PM
Yeah, I bet that if they had replaced Benjamin those people would have still been in an uproar. Do they just not want the Cars to exist anymore?

TimothyBFan
05-12-2011, 12:49 PM
Do they just not want the Cars to exist anymore?

That's pretty much it. As far as they are concerned without Benjamin, there is no Cars. Benjamin sang half the songs and they feel Ric should not be singing all of them now. Interesting to note that their biggest hit was Drive (Benjamin sung) and they DID NOT do it Tuesday night in Seattle. I would wager bets that they decided that one was off limits during the tour-which again proves to me that they are being respectful to Benjamin's memory.

They all pretty much say it's all Ric's fault they never got back together when Benjamin was alive, Ric's the reason they fought and broke up, etc., yadda, yadda, yadda..... I'm sorry, but only 2 people really know what happened and one of them can't state his case any longer. Besides, they made up a couple months before Benjamin passed away, which is common knowledge and can be seen when they all sat down for the interview for the Unlocked dvd. Benjamin was very ill and looked it then and Ric kept patting him on the back and was so tender to him, it brought a tear to my eye the first time I saw it.

I don't know, it's almost as if they feel they are being unloyal to Benjamin if they enjoy the new Cars music now. I for one, don't feel as if there's anything wrong with it and I am being realistic - Benjamin is gone and why can't I enjoy the reunion & the new music? Doesn't mean I love Benjamin and the old music any less--right?

Geesh-why am I letting a few people on a message board throw a damper in what is so exciting for me otherwise! The heck with them!!! ;)

I can definitely understand why some fans wouldn't want this to happen since Benjamin can't be a part of it. But there's a way to handle these emotions and I don't believe anger is the right way. I can imagine feeling sad or sorrowful but angry? It doesn't do anybody any good.

Responding to a question from TBF in another thread (but not quoting because I'm technically challenged and not sure how to move the quote between threads):

Unfortunately I don't have a lot of reviews or anecdotes. I grew up in New Hampshire, so we considered any Boston band "local". Aerosmith (who actually formed in NH) and J Geils were also very popular around here when I was in high school.

I never got to see the Cars play "before they were famous". I was a little too young for rock concerts when they were up and coming, and by the time I had a job, a car and disposable income, they were already touring nationally. I think they did still play places like The Paradise in Boston, but I couldn't go because I was underage.

All I really remember was that they were extremely well-liked in my area. Everyone knew all the songs and if you had a garage band, you learned them. One of the best cover bands I ever saw (when I got old enough to go to clubs) specialized in Cars covers.

Have to share this: Received a wall post on Facebook from my son Saturday afternoon. It read: "I am getting into The Cars. I have the self-titled. What other albums should I get?". Can I tell you how proud I am right now?!?! LOL I told him get them ALL because they're all just that good and told him which one was my favorite and gave him the brief history! So this morning, I pull up my Twitter account and see that he posted: "Dudz!! The Cars were so f***ing good!". I think I've made a believer!!! Very cool! I love custom/handmade stuff. Etsy has taken over from eBay as my new place to browse online... although I don't buy half as much from there. It can be pretty expensive! Beautiful stuff, though.

Thought I'd revive this today. Since Troub posted in the Things that remind you thread a couple days of go, I've been missing my sweet Benjamin and listening non-stop to him.

Here's some newer stuff unheard before just put on YouTube by one of the members of a FB page for the Cars. Very raw!! LOVE IT!!! Benjamin's voice was always so perfect.

I don't think I've ever posted this before. This is the song that Ric wrote for Benjamin after he passed away. It makes me cry when I hear it. His love for him really shines through.

Here are the words for Silver.

You were my silver you were my gold
you were all the things that cant be told
you were my star falling through the night
you were the one who showed me grand delight
i cant see you but i need you
and you're gone
you were my right hand you were my friend
you were always strong until the end
you were my good time you were my rave
you're the one that always set the stage
you're what i once knew now i miss you
cause you're gone
now i spend my lonely nights
wishing you were here to make things right
to turn my darkness into light
you were my party you were my tea
you're the one that had faith in me

What a lovely tribute, Willie! I totally understand the need to share and reminisce. Our musicians mean so much to us. Benjamin was a beautiful man with a fantastic voice and it's great to know that his music is still loved across the world. Indulge all you want; I can guarantee that lots of the songs are new to me, and I'm really enjoying them!

Have you seen the one from Rock Goes To College done with the whole group only a few months before he passed? What a difference he had become. I can't watch that interview. Have seen it one time only and that will have to be enough. It about killed me to watch it the one and only time but I knew I just had to. :depressed: Damn cancer!!!!

I've been having a Benjamin week (like that's anything new, really) but then this showed up in my news feed this morning and it melted my heart. I've seen recent pics of Ben Jr and he just looks more and more like his Daddy as he gets older.

I know you're indulging me and I thank you. And yes, I do have more Ben Jr. recent pictures. His mother is very protective of him so there's not much out there.

Here he is back stage in Boston with The Cars when they reunited a couple years ago. Ben Jr. is the one in the middle.

Ahhh.... The Cars Live -Musikladen in Germany. It was released only 3 weeks after Benjamin passed away. I have a couple copies of this video (one doesn't work very well and skips but I couldn't part with it when I replaced it several years ago). One of my fave Cars dvds EXCEPT for the interview. Can hardly handle watching Benjamin in that shape. When I see it, all I can think of is how frail he is and knowing that just 5 months later, we lost him. And the way Ric keeps touching his shoulder with such affection, just rips my heart out. There are people out there that still want to blame Ric for the breakup. But anyone who sees that interview would be hard pressed to not see the love that Ric always had and still had for Benjamin.

Here's a links to the interview in case anyone want to see it. It is a great interview, despite the shape Benjamin was in. Love hearing them talk about the old days of making The Cars album and about the different instruments they would use, the night before they shot the show that is on this dvd and the beer tents. It took me several years to finally watch this video the 2nd time after seeing it the first time after I got the dvd right after Benjamin died. But now I can watch it and actually absorb some of the other stuff and not concentrate so much on him. Does that make sense?

Glad to hear you've discovered them. They are an awesome band and have had so many hits. Most of the bigger hits were sang by Benjamin, and Drive being the biggest. A little info on that official video--- the woman in it is Ric Ocasek's wife. They met while doing the video-she was 19 and he was 35. They married in 1989 and are still married & have 2 sons. And the video was directed by Timothy Hutton, the actor.

I think many people don't realize that Benjamin sang many of the hits and just assume it was all Ric. I know of a couple members here that didn't know that till I brought it to their attention.

For the record, my favorite album is Heartbeat City. As for favorite songs, the top 5 (all Benjamin lead vocals) never waver but after that, I love them all.

Candy-O
Stranger Eyes
Drive
It's Not The Night
Moving In Stereo (the bass in this is awesome)

And it is a cool story. I have a million of them about this band but I won't bore you all with them. :hilarious:

But here's another one that you all might find rather strange, for lack of a better word. There's always been controversy about the date of his passing. Right from the beginning, publications like Rolling Stone magazine, radio stations, etc. stated he passed on October 3rd (which is the date I've always considered to be fact) but his gravestone and other sources have the date as the 4th. His Wiki page for years, listed it as the 3rd but now mysteriously shows it as the 4th. It just depends on who you talk to. I know a couple members of his family, a cousin of his has become a good online friend and a old friend of his who I've also met online and they both swear that it was the 3rd yet his ex-manager and the ex-manager's girlfriend who happens to run a Benjamin Orr fansite and has stirred up controversy about the Cars reuniting without Benjamin a few years ago, claims that it's the 4th. I should note, I and several other members of the Cars/Benjamin fandom have left that group because of some of the problems she's caused in the past.
