As we discussed in another thread, it's hard to find a breakup song that is positive or uplifting but they're out there. Here's one I mentioned in the R&R Birthday thread on Jackson Browne's birthday last October. I like the idea in the lyrics that although "I need to go where I will never hear your name", that I will survive because "I'm alive".

Here's Jackson doing the song on Letterman back in 1993.

Can you think of any positive breakup songs?

I know this one is terribly obvious and has been mentioned elsewhere but hey, you gotta start somewhere!

And here's another - Fleetwood Mac's "Never Going Back Again."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxfxcEH8_Co

(this one's arguable. You might say it's not a breakup song because it talks about his great new relationship - but the entire song is directed AT his ex, so I think it counts! The last verse is basically a taunt. "You dont know what it means to win. Come on down and see ME again." translation: "See, Stevie, you dumped me but I'm totally happier now with a girl who appreciates me! I'm never going back to knocking on your door again!" lol)

I know there has to be a few country fans who will rememner Roy Clark's song "Thank God and Greyhound Your Gone"

If Never Going Back Again is happy then I suggest I Want To Break Free by Queen. It's hard to avoid a slight tinge of bitterness in these songs so you have to look at the overall message. I will give this some thought.

Maybe Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover"

And... I wouldn't call it exactly happy, but "A Little Time" from the Beautiful South has a great ending 8). Typically for them it has a beautiful melody which almost disguises the story in the lyrics!

I agree FP. I think it's inevitable that there's going to be some lyrics about missing the person, but if the overall message is positive and not bitter I tend to think of it as "happy".

Agh, Karen Carpenter - what an ! I haven't heard that one in a long time and you're right on to put it here SS. I love the lyrics, "So it's one more round for experience and I'm on the road again."

Love the Fergie one!

I just heard this on the radio and rushed to put it here. But are they breaking up? Were they ever together? The lyrics are kind of vague.

Go Your Own Way..... I played this one back when I was doing classic rock covers in a band. This is pretty much Lindsey to Stevie. The Rumours album is my fav FM album and a fav in general! All of the songs are written by the songwriter about their partners. I can talk about what song means what from that album but I'm not in this thread. Maybe I'll go to the FM thread next!

NOTE: I think this will be our reference for a song that is not happy! :hilarious:

Magnificent song; but the last thing it is is 'happy'.

There is a track on Van Morrison's Pay The Devil album called More & More:

More and more I'm forgettin' the past
More and more I'm livin' at last
Day by day I'm losin' my blues
More and more I'm forgettin' about you

You know how I've tried to keep you by my side
You know how I cried the day you said goodbye
Day by day I'm losin' my blues
More and more I'm forgettin' about you

But, oh, how I tried to keep you by my side
And, oh, how I cried the day you said goodbye
Day by day I'm losin' my blues
More and more I'm forgettin' about you

Day by day I'm losin' my blues
More and more I'm forgettin' about you

I decided to post the lyrics as I'm probably the only person on the board who knows it.

And also It Won't Take Long by the Rolling Stones. It might be better to post a link:

First one that came to my mind. :inlove:

Lyrics like:
"I can't feel this way much longer
expecting to survive
With all these hidden innuendoes
just waiting to arrive"

Benjamin and company....

Love this one.... He wasn't very happy with her, I don't believe.

Couldn't find a video for this one but Promises by Eric Clapton...Right from the get go of this song....

"I don't care if you never come home.
I don't mind if you just
Keep rowing away on distant sea
cuz I don't love you and you don't love me."

Gotta love it from a woman's perspective.

If Looks Could Kill? Are you kidding me?

Why not? :hilarious: He screwed up and I feel she's pretty happy to let him know what's gonna happen next time. She's empowered!! It's my story and I'm sticking to it!
Caught you in the act can't put up with that
Messin' where you shouldn't be
I wanna hear you say you're sorry
Cause' nobody takes advantage of me
You're missin' the mark shootin' in the dark
I'm pullin' the wool from my eyes
Baby, don't push me further
It's gonna hurt you if it happens twice

I wouldn't call this a "happy" song at all, but I think it deserves a place here. It's so beautiful and sad, but the lyrics have a positive spin... "I know this hurts, but you WILL find somebody else and things WILL get better."

I had a time in my life a couple of years ago when this song made me bawl my eyes out every time I heard it... but I kept listening to it because it comforted me in a strange way.

I can't find a link at the moment, but here are the lyrics.

Birds - Neil Young

Lover,
there will be another one
Who'll hover
over you beneath the sun
Tomorrow
see the things
that never come
Today

When you see me
Fly away without you
Shadow on the things you know
Feathers fall around you
And show you the way to go
It's over, it's over.

Nestled
in your wings my little one
This special
morning brings another sun
Tomorrow
see the things
that never come
Today

When you see me
Fly away without you
Shadow on the things you know
Feathers fall around you
And show you the way to go
It's over, it's over.

Since Stars and I were discussing Jimmy Wayne in another thread...and this song is appropriate here, I thought I'd share one of my favorite versions of this song.

Willie, I thought about Babe I'm Gonna Leave You but I wasn't sure! Lou, Birds is a great choice although I don't think it's happy. Love Promises too.

Don't Think Twice, It's Alright - Bob Dylan  Just leave at your own chosen speed because you just kinda wasted my precious time! Bob at his most acerbic best (see you in April, Bob).

So Long - Abba

Although in this she's resisting his attempts to 'buy' her love rather than breaking up with him.

ETA:

Reelin' In The Years - Steely Dan

'After all the things we've done & said
You find another man
The things you think are useless I can't understand'

He sounds glad to be rid of her!

This morning I thought of the poster child of positive breakup songs!

Love the line, "But now I'm saving all my lovin' for someone who's lovin' me."

You Go Girl!

Okay PM - this is a bit scary, but I must be channeling you. I swear I thought of this song out of nowhere last night and thought to myself - "Now, that's the epitome of a happy breakup song - I've got to post that on the board". Then, I come here this morning and :stunned: !!!

:fear: :fear: :fear:

But - you are right ... You Go Girl!

Love "I Will Survive" ! First heard it in the Priscilla Queen of the Desert movie.... :)
