This thread is for the purpose of us promoting our favorite charities, especially if there's a particular need or drive you'd like your fellow Borderers to participate in. Let's do some good!

Seeing as Cathy's cause has been completed successfully :yay: I'd like to take the opportunity to re post my cause here.

Thank you so much to everyone who has voted already http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n242/Mellie1961/happy0158.gif and to anyone who hasn't, and who has a facebook account, please consider voting for a very good cause to win some very much needed supplies.

One of my loves in life is the Boxer dog breed as some of you know. There are many rescue groups out there and one of the ones I follow is Legacy Boxer Rescue in Hurst, Texas. http://www.savetheboxers.com/ They work in the DFW area and do amazing work saving, helping and rehoming abused, unwanted, whatever Boxers, whether pups, adults or seniors.

They are in the running for a $20,000 of supplies win in a competition being run by Dr Marty Becker http://www.facebook.com/DrMartyBecker
the vet from Good Morning America. However they are up against stiff competition with Villalobos rescue centre that has a TV show - Pitbulls and Parolees.

Yesterday Legacy were behind by about 100 votes and a cute photo of a Boxer called Stevie (see below) was posted to help gain more votes. It worked and more than 200 votes were cast in their favour. Today Legacy are back in 1st place. Now that is great but they aren't safe yet as there are still about 2 weeks until voting ends. Villalobos have over 56,000 followers to their FB page and Legacy just over 6,000. :brickwall:Both of them are breed specific but Legacy are my kind of breed. (Austin, agrees with me here.)

Please can I ask those of you with FB to vote for Legacy Boxer Rescue and help them to win much needed supplies.

1 Go to Dr Marty's FB page (link above for you) and like.

2 On the left hand side of his page, click on shelter/rescue group link.

3. Scroll down to Legacy Boxer Rescue and vote.

Voting runs up to June 14th. Thank you so much. :xoxo:

Thank you everyone. :grouphug:

They are still holding the lead atm, by about 160 votes, and have banded together with other Boxer rescues to gain support in return for help if they are in contests.

Well, still waiting for the official confirmation, but ............... Legacy Boxer Rescue finished in first place when the voting closed at 12.01am (2.01 am Texas time) this morning in the '$20,000 shelter giveaway' contest they were in. :yay: They finished with 3910 votes to their nearest opponent at 3186 votes.

Thank you so much to all of you on the board who voted for my adopted little cause.:iloveyou:
Sharon from LBR posted on FB that whilst they had a big lead, (no pun intended lol) "it wasn't over until the 'fat Boxer Woowoo's". Well this morning she hopefully posted the closest thing she could to that.

The Wildlife Center of Virginia (the cause I asked for all of your votes for in the Chase Community Giving contest) continues to care for the three eaglets whose mother was struck and killed by a plane near the Norfolk Botanical Garden in Virginia. They are doing well and set to be released into the wild in August. As this is my first year watching this web cam, it has certainly been an interesting journey - first watching these tiny bobbleheads in the nest and then watching their development at the wildlife center.

There is a moderated chat on the same page as the web cam so that you can watch and read and ask questions and/or comment while you view the eagles. Since they have been at the wildlife center it has become a treat for the chat room when the president of WCV, Ed Clark, comes on the blog. He is a funny, educational man who provides his knowledge of all things wildlife. I wanted to share with you our exchange from a few days ago. Sorry it's so small. I'm Cathy from IL.

The number he mentions refers to the dollar amount they were awarded because of our votes.

A couple of days later somebody asked him if he liked the Eagles (band). Here's his answer.

http://i510.photobucket.com/albums/s348/chilca0001/NBG%20Eagles/Edandtheeagles.png

Oh, and here are the 'babies' in their flight enclosure, learning to be eagles! They were hatched two days apart and they are just over 100 days old. They will get their white head and tail feathers when they are about five years old. This is also when they start breeding. You may think that it looks like they're fighting in the video, but this is the type of behavior the wildlife center wants to see. It shows that they will be assertive enough to make it in the wild.

Oh and BTW, there is no sound on this cam and therefore no sound on the video.

OK my turn for a charity request... :)

I am working on a project for the non-profit organization Epilepsy Halton Peel Hamilton, where I (and hopefully others) will be making unique hand made jewelery from Guitar, bass, violin, piano and any other musicial instrument strings. We have named this endeavour "Strings of Change" www.stringsofchange.com (http://www.stringsofchange.com) . All this explanation is to ask that if any of our musicians on the board have strings they'd be willing to donate please PM me and I'll give you further details. Once the first batch of jewelery has been made and are ready for sale, I will post it here.

Thanks a ton!!

Kath

I don't know if I am brave or stupid (!) but on March 11th I will be doing a skydive to raise money for Naomi House Children's Hospice here in Hampshire. My Mum works as a carer there, so I know what a fantastic place it is and what an amazing job all of the carers and nurses do for the children and their parents. It really is a lifeline for so many children with life-limiting conditions. Check their website out here:

http://www.naomihouse.org.uk/

I know things are tight right now, but I would really appreciate any help you can give. This is my fundraising page. You can donate via Paypal from anywhere in the world (though please Gift Aid if you are a UK taxpayer!) Any amount you feel you can give will be wonderful.

Just spreading the word about a wonderful organisation named Hearts United for Animals. If you could like them on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hearts-United-for-Animals/70036638021), that would be fantastic! They are based in Nebraska, but they do such fantastic work in rescuing and rehabilitating dogs from the horrors of the puppy mills that exist in the States. Currently they are looking for bits and bobs to sell at their fundraiser next month - this can be something handmade, or just something purchased that you wouldn't mind giving away. All of the details are on their FB page. A very worthwhile cause!

I'm not one to get political or anything, I won't even tell you the story of how my father left the planet -- cause it was of lung cancer, and obviously, that was of his own violition. Instead, I'll tell you about my neighbor, Kenneth, who had Leukemia in 1968 when they had no clue and he had absolutely no chance of survival.
His 5 sisters -- my BFF's -- went to he public school about a mile away, and I went to the Catholic School just up the block. So, when in came to lunchtime-- and medication time -- I was it. I'd clap for him, I'd sing for him, whatever it took to please a two year old to try and make him comply. We tried for months and momths, but it didn't really matter cause the cancer had consumed him.
So, for Kenneth, or anyone -- especially a child who can't fight for himself, I hope that you will make a contribution. For Kenneth.

How tragic. Thanks for letting us know about this, HH. I missed the fundraiser but was able to donate through their site.

Ive always been a dreamer

Thanks for that, HH. I lost my father and my uncle who was almost like a father both to lung cancer so I give an annual donation. I guess there aren't many folks around who's lives haven't been affected by cancer in some way and as you said, even modest donations add up to help fight this awful disease.
