Guys, I was thinking of dedicating a section of GFO to Glenn's equiment - his favorite guitars, pianos, mics, etc. The only problem - I don't really know anything about it! If anyone knows some of his instruments, please post them here!

The only things I know: he plays some Takamine and Rickenbacker (sp?) guitars.

I can't remember the details, but didn't Glenn have his own guitar designed for him at one point?

Is this the one you mean, dreamer?

I've seen one of these advertised on Ebay.

Why yes, GEF - I do believe that is what I was thinking about. I knew I could count on you! Am I the only one that thinks it very sad that this company designs a guitar in Glenn's name, and then can't even spell his name right in an ad!

Oh my gosh. That IS sad!

GEF, thanks for the link!

I believe I've seen him playing a Les Paul or two as well, in addition to the Takamine 12 string and the Rickenbacher that you've pointed out 8)

Thanks Maleah! And I was thinking earlier today - wasn't "Old Black" a Gibson?

glenneaglesfan

Old Black is indeed a Gibson Les Paul, as is the nice sunburst red guitar he plays.

I only know this because my son has a replica version.

Lovely. This is just what I need. Thanks guys. It's time like these when I wish I had more of a clue about such things. ;)

For a while he has used a different shape mic to the other band members:

First this one, whereas the others used the standard 'round' one although when Don was at the drums he used this shape:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/ozeagle/Yokohama.jpg

Then he started using a dark coloured mic, again with a more oval shape than that used by the others:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/ozeagle/Twickers.jpg

But when he plays solo shows he reverts to the standard 'round grey' model. I would love to know why a) with the band his mic is a different shape b) why he then doesn't use it solo.

He plays a Yamaha Clavinet when he plays keyboards. I think the grand piano is a Yamaha too, but he no longer plays that in concert.

He plays a Fender Telecaster during The Long Run & a Fender Stratocaster during BOS. The other thing that we've noticed recently, of course, is that he hasn't used Old Black during his solo shows, just the Gibson Sunburst (or Big Red as I call it).

I don't know WHAT this is (I think this is during Walk Away).

On the subject of mic's I think some of you are aware of my desire to actually be one of Glenn's mics. Particularly one where he gets up close to and very personal with!! What did the mic do in a former life to get such a good deal in this one?

I was going to comment on this when the thread started, but I was afraid I was going to become known as The Border Perv. I'm relieved to know I'm not alone.

It's OK, Nancy. When I saw the name of the thread, I thought you had either hit the Google jackpot, or that you took a picture of Glenn at Pebble from, you know, an interesting angle.

I had the same thought too but figured I'd stay away from it so the thread didn't become all about Glenn's AHEM 'equipment ' :D ... but I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one 8)

Hey, not everyone uses the same euphemisms on a regular basis! I use "privates" myself.

Let's just say that I'm glad we had this discussion before I put "Glenn's Equipment" on the menu of the webpage.

I confess to having a similar reaction to start with  , but to get back to guitars, FP wanted to know about this one.

After a little research, I think it is a Gibson Firebird.

Interesting... Glenn's daughter is called Taylor, makes me wonder is that a connection. I looked it up in a kid's names book and apparently it means 'style'. Well if she takes after her dad she certainly lives up to her name :)

That made me think I needed to post the Rickenbacker being counselled after getting its speeding ticket. He plays the Rickenbacker on Love In The 21st Century.

Then there is the Gretsch he used on True Love:

I love that speeding ticket moment - that's one lucky guitar to get counselling from Glenn!

Like the guy said to Fox Moulder - You expect me to believe that this is your real name?

Surely you don't expect me to believe that you were not thinking about Glenn's equipment when you asked about his equipment?

And I'm sure if you ladies had a chance to hold Glenn's well strung and tuned guitar, you gals would do your best impression of a young screaming teenage Beetles fan, - faint.

TG, Fox Mulder aside, do you have any info about Glenn's guitars and such? I haven't had time to do this section because I've been setting up the other sites, but I'm still interested.

These are a few shots in homage to Old Black, which SG has kindly identified as a Gibson Les Paul Junior. It must be at least 30 years old.

Can a guitar really look that good after being taken around the world for 30 years? I always wondered if he replaced it with a look-alike occasionally. But perhaps if you treat it with enough loving care and have enough money to fix every nick, it could indeed last that log.

Perhaps that's why he stopped playing it in 2006. Maybe it finally gave up the ghost.

Glenn once mentioned in an interview (some time in the 80s I think) that he was trying to buy some Gibson Les Paul Junior - just to have some backup guitar for Old Black. And he said they were available for a reasonable price - whatever that means
Anyway, I once checked them out and they are really not that expensive. But you have to get lucky to get a black one :D

I miss it. I would love to know why he no longer plays it, although the Sunburst is a good substitute.

Thanks for these great "Old Black" pics, GEF and FP. I have a special affection for that guitar - it has a great sound. I particularly like that LID pic of Glenn  - that's when he ended "Heartache Tonight" with that triple strum, right? :D

The guitar sounds especially great in HFO on "Get Over It" - and then Glenn  looks so majestic too while playing the solo. He doesn't achieve that same feedback/echo effect during the intro on stage as he does in the studio, though.

Interesting, though: his version of "Smuggler's Blues" in LID is great, playing "Old Black", but I prefer the version he does with the Eagles in Pittsburgh, 1994. I love that drawn out intro he does, as well as the brilliant solo at the end (like the record, which he doesn't do in LID) and it's with a different guitar, although I think that was also a Gibson.
