That was a one-of-kind event, for them to be singing together like that, but yes, they did seem a little uncomfortable at first. I think it was Don F who wrote in his book that Glenn hired someone to teach him how to move onstage. I can see how that would be useful.

("Dad dancing" lol; just curious--was Timothy a dad by that time?)

It was Mr. Henley who took dance lessons to become more comfortable onstage. Maybe Glenn did it too, but he had a lot of experience being a front man.

Both the beauteous bassists were young Dads: Randy at 17 and, as Luvy has pointed out, Mr. Timothy at 22.

 You're right, NMB, it was Henley who took dance lessons, according to Marc Eliot's book. I suppose Glenn could have too, but he did play his guitar during his solo shows, so that helped.

A YouTuber/vinyl collector named Curtis Linder posted a clip about some Randy Meisner albums he acquired. He apparently has a large collection and has posted other clips of some well-known artists and their albums. It's nice that he singled out Randy. If this has been posted before, my apologies. I used the search engine and came up with nothing.

That's cool Delilah. I am building my own Randy vinyl library, I still need his third solo album/vinyl Randy Meisner (1982). I have been hitting all the old record stores in the Dallas area trying to find it. I have found and bought some solo Joe, Glenn and Henley. I also bought Eagles live with the poster still with it! I was so excited. I have everything on CD, but I want it on vinyl, the way it was back in the day.

That's great ETG. I'm not a vinyl gal myself; I still buy cds and rip them to iTunes. I also buy and download directly from iTunes. All my Glenn and Joe stuff I downloaded from iTunes, and some Henley too. I've been considering getting some Randy solo lp's just for the liner notes and any extras. I bought a Randy Meisner Anthology cd, Japanese edition, and a lot of the info is in Japanese so that is frustrating. However, it seems the best-sounding cds are the Japanese versions and the original 80s/90s issues (which are hard to find).

I'd love to get the original Meisner, Swan & Rich cd, but those are few and far between and $$.

But yeah, you're right - the prices have sure gone up for that CD in the year or two since I bought mine. It should be remastered and reissued.

I don't have that album either. I'll have to add it to my wish list.

When I first started looking for Randy's solo material I found his first CD that was going for around $50 then later saw it for $200+. That's when I opted for vinyl which was much more affordable. Yes, they are few and far between.

I was talking with a record store owner in Dallas and he said he saw Randy in concert in the early 80's and I said I wish I could have seen him and he then said I would have been to young (not hardly but thanks!) I would have been early high school. I wanted to ask all about it but didn't get a chance. And of course his perspective and mine would have been different I'm sure. :)

Thanks, I just may have to get that one (I see there's 2 available in that price range, 1 from the U.K. and another from Germany). One reviewer agreed that it needs remastering due to a "muddy" sound.

I bought all of my Randy CDs used a few years ago... they certainly could use a remastering. I would be happy to purchase remastered versions - I'm sure we all would be. There's a market for it! I hope they do it one day.

PS Does anyone have any idea why "Deep Inside My Heart" on Randy's official YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrJsQ-sz1EQ) isn't available in the USA? I get the message "The uploader has not made this available in your country."

NightMistBlue
02-09-2017, 11:29 AM
I don't know but surely that can't be an official Randy channel, coming from the hombre himself? If you click on the "About" channel it says: Joined Apr 29, 2013. Randy was indisposed at that time and AFAIK didn't have people attending to his career, aside from an accountant.

I noticed that the other videos posted are European acts.

sodascouts
02-09-2017, 07:38 PM
Well, Randy himself didn't post it, but the service VEVO is owned and used by the "big three" record companies (Universal, Warner, and Sony). They put up their artists' videos on the artists' behalf.

Still, you make a good point about the European acts. I bet this is a foreign branch of VEVO with different rights... or it's an imposter account.

Yeah, I tend to think it's a fan, because he or she has only posted like five videos. You'd think if it was a record label, they'd have a ton of product. But who knows these days, the way the music biz has changed.

Back in the day, I used to like Juice Newton and have a few of her albums from the 80s, but I had never heard this before. This was recorded in 1995, a full twenty years since the release of the original and Randy sounds fantastic here!

NightMistBlue

How do you feel about all the key changes later in the song? They make me cringe. Pity, because the song started out great. Randy sounds marvelous.

Juice also invited her collaborators (duet partners?) to choose another song for them to sing together. Mr. Meisner chose "Heart of Gold" - it's very good. Have you heard it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKi94Xlocfg

I've never heard this version of "Heart of Gold" before. It's one of my favorites by Neil Young and it almost seems that Randy is trying to imitate him at the beginning of the song. I like this arrangement even if it's a bit slicker than what I've grown accustomed to.

The key changes in "Take It To The Limit" are odd, but they didn't really bother me much. I like that Randy went for those high notes toward the end and he still killed it!

Isn't it wonderful to see Randy so happy though - he's enjoying performing and obviously had a great rapport with the other musicians.

Thanks to collector Stephen Duncan for sharing his video. It was really special to see Randy perform "Midnight Flyer" as a mature man, also "Lonesome Cowgirl."

The club owners (Wise Guys in Pasadena) also filmed the show. The club has long since closed down, so who knows what happened to that video. Maybe it - or others - will turn up some day.

I can't really say how happy he was but it's always great to see Randy, in his element on bass and vocals on stage.

Maybe I'm biased but imho Randy was, head and shoulders, more talented than almost any of the artists he teamed up with after he left Eagles. Rick Roberts was a decent songwriter and Richard Marx is just brilliant.

I'd love the next chapter in Randy's story to be happy musical one.

Who's to say what would have happened had he been part of the HFO tour? Things would have been different had he followed Joe's path.

I agree with you here and I'm not biased at all. :lie: Really though, James Griffin from Bread was no slouch. I do believe Randy's collaboration with Rick Roberts was not an ideal one.

That's an interesting angle. Anyone you think would have been a better collaborator for The Meis?

Rick said in his book "Lame Brain" that Randy was in a bit of a songwriting slump at the time of the Roberts Meisner Band. I believe Rick has always written on his own. Maybe it would have been helpful for Randy to be with someone - like Felder, who knows - whom he could write with, bounce ideas off of.

P.S. Thank you for the lovely screenshot, Delilah.

I don't who would have been a better collaborator. Felder, maybe, as you say; too bad the band with David Palmer didn't work out.

I just don't think he jibed artistically with Rick Roberts. Did they ever create anything together? I should probably read his book. I'm not slamming Mr. Roberts; he's a talented singer-songwriter. I cringe slightly though, when I watch that Nashville Now clip. "You Are the Woman" was so dated, even by then and it's not country so their presence on the show seems out of place. I sense Randy being uncomfortable but maybe that's just me. I haven't seen any other of their performances on that show, if there are any.

Plus I'm sure I read somewhere Randy saying he and Rick used to party hard-core together which affected their reputations. On a personal level it probably didn't help either of them.

I can understand Randy hitting a wall with songwriting but what about all those songs that ended up on Love Me or Leave Me Alone? I suspect many if not most of them came about in the 80s based on the sound and backing vocals.

P.S. You're welcome

There is a wonderful performance of "Take It to the Limit" from the Nashville Now program that has sadly gone missing from YouTube.

Rick Roberts says in his book - he has several - that the Roberts Meisner Band recorded about a dozen demos. They went the extra mile so to speak and expense to make sure the recording quality was excellent and they were confident and proud of the material. Much to their disappointment though, the demos didn't attract significant interest from record labels.

I'm hoping (I do a lot of that) that these recordings turn up some time. Rick has been generous with putting all his pre-Firefall solo albums on YouTube in their entirety.

Delilah
05-13-2017, 01:08 PM
That's great information, NMB. I didn't know about the demos. Even if Randy had writer's block, I'd still love to hear them. I share your hope.

Poco were very jealous of the Eagles success. Making the decision to perform Take It To The Limit as part of a medley might show one of the band's weaknesses. They didn't seem to believe in 'Song Power'.

I heard a UK radio interview with this version of Poco. They did loads of promotion. They sounded very awkward in each others company. I felt uncomfortable just listening to it.

Thanks everybody for all the Meisner clips.

Oh heck yeah, it's amazing. Thank you for telling us about it.

Neither Donny Ullstrom or drummer Kelly Shanahan has any memory of "Summer Wind," the unreleased song that was played.

Funk, that's so cool that you heard an interview from the Poco reunion. Do you recall if Richie Furay was still in the band at that point? He seemed to be the main source of tension, though they had other travails as well as Randy pointed out in part 3 of the John Beaudin interview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0yuFuh09yQ&t=211s

I love Poco and wish they'd had better commercial success not sure why they didn't but agree it most likely all comes down to song power. Something the Eagles clearly possessed at a time when radio friendly music had a hige impact both with fans and record labels/companies.

In a recent Timothy interview, he addressed those very issues: Poco's envy of the Eagles and why Timmy thinks (in hindsight) that they had good and near-great but no truly great songs.

Thanks for the interview links. I must check them out. Randy's been out of the business so long that I'm just presuming that I've heard them before.

According to the amazing angelfire archive http://www.angelfire.com/rock3/deliverin/poco89-90.htm the interview I heard was from 1990, after Furay had departed. I remember there being three interviewees, probably Messina, Meisner & Young. They sang an acoustic medley which included a snatch of Take It To The Limit.

Even without Furay, it was obvious that this was a short term project. They were trying to be funny during the interview but it was falling flat to say the least. I noticed on the angelfire archive that the trio performed a few shows in Japan in 1991 with Bernie Leadon joining in with the encores.

Check out the picture that is posted in the "Earlybird-The Band" thread (https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2074&page=4). I'll have to verify but I think Don Felder may have been in Japan around that time too.

As for Poco's Eagles envy--I haven't listened to all of Poco's albums; they do have some good songs. But I've never heard anything that makes me wonder, why weren't these guys as big as the Eagles? Yet that seems to the big question in Poco fandom.

That's odd, because all three of those guys are friends. Maybe it was the "getting up at 5am" for the European radio interviews that's to blame for the bad mojo.

According to some newspaper articles and the Randy Meisner Concert Chronology, I believe Randy even played in Messina's band for a couple of years in the early 90s (unless I misundertood something). Messina posted on his Facebook page last year that Randy is someone that he grew close to and cares about deeply.

Rusty goes so far as to call himself a "Randy fan" and doesn't shy away from publicly praising him. In his autobiography, Furay strongly implied that Randy got the initial offer to join Poco due to the influence of Rusty. Rusty didn't like Tim (how could anyone not like Tim?!) but he always loved Randy.

My hearing is not the best. Someone with a foreign accent asks Randy, "Good show at the Troubadour?" and the Randman says, "I left Poco, man." Do I have that right?

Thanks for these Dawn. "You Send Me" with Randy on lead was recorded on a 4-song EP which was released in late 1962. It was Randy's (and the band's) first professional recording. He was 16. Only 500 copies were made so the original EP is super-rare.

I adore this cover of "Kansas City" with Randy singing lead. Another founding member, Larry Soto, sings lead on "Hurt Me."

Bobby Soto, who joined the band in 1963, is singing lead on the "The One You Love" cover. I'm not sure when it was recorded. Sadly he died in 2000, just a couple of weeks after the band was inducted into the Nebraska Music Hall of Fame.

And yes, Randy's cover of Kansas City is awesome, what a treat it's available online I just love it too!

Edited to add:

Sad news about Bobby Soto, I think he sounded great on The One You Love.

I found some more obscure videos of Randy recently on YouTube showing him with some old musical pals this year. He seems upbeat in this one https://youtu.be/Ra457w6m2YE with Mitch Delevie in this other one Randy doesn't say much, is just focused on listening to rusty young play https://youtu.be/OnP0Zv8ip_k as far as I can tell these videos haven't been posted. At least not on this thread. Randy looks a little worse for wear but at least he seems involved in music still and is with his friends

I think we posted the Rusty Young video in the "Recent Randy sightings" thread. The Mitchel Delevie video first appeared one day in January 2016 but then was taken down within hours and wasn't seen again until this year. Don't ask because no one knows. Or rather anyone who knows isn't talking.

Randy has been playing bass and recording with some friends in Los Angeles. It's not publically known if the music will be released or if it's just a fun project among friends.

I am so thankful for all of Randy's work over the years. He is truly one of the best bass guitarists and singers of his (all) time ... not to mention his kind, generous, peace loving personality making him a joy to know and work with. Randy loved Rick Nelson and that does not surprise me. Rick was a very talented all around good guy and I think some of his happiest times were playing with Rick.

Me too, Dawn but I’m greedy and wish there was more, lol. I can only imagine how exciting it was for this farm boy from Nebraska to perform with Rick Nelson and play on classic hits like “Hello Mary Lou” and “I’m Walkin”. The song you posted is a great example of Rick’s talent as a singer-songwriter. I love the extended note Randy sings at the 2:45 mark. Thank you for posting.

Glory hallelujah! Our good luck streak continues of long-lost or previously unknown Randy tv appearances coming to the surface. This is Poco performing "Call It Love" on a Dutch television show in 1989. I remember this song, too Soda. I’ve always liked it. Btw, it reached #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1989. It was the 2nd-highest charting hit in Poco’s history (“Crazy Love” hit #17, another vocal lead by Rusty).

It's not the toe-curlingly awkward experience that Rick Roberts described in his book "Lame Brain," but Mr. Emery knows very well who the Eagles were and keeps trying to talk Randy into getting the band back together, with apologies to the Roberts-Meisner Band. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVCR01KGf9I&fbclid=IwAR3GIu12s1O1RbXB2qqzVlktfEi1lQarcFHiUzFBR 8rl0XxzWoZ1--tufkQ

Also, my initial impression that Randy was playing with a pick-up band was plain wrong: that’s Vern Monett on pedal steel and Ron Grinel on drums. Both gentlemen played with Randy for years in the Roberts-Meisner Band and Meisner, Swan & Rich. Vern was very happy to see this rare clip! He said the photo we have of Roger Varian and the band was taken the same day as the performance seen in the clip, so that would set the date as 1994.

Thank You NMB - The first one did not work for me. I will listen later today when I have time and can enjoy it.

An oldie but a goodie. Randy plays a great bassline on “If You Gotta Go, Go Now” which I believe he wrote himself b/c it’s not on Bob Dylan’s original recording. In this clip, it seems the audio isn’t in sync so it may be from a different performance.

So here is something for Meisner Monday :partytime:: a Rock History Music video about Randy’s departure from Poco. It includes clips from past interviews with Randy, Jim Messina and Richie Furay. Not surprisingly, the stories don’t exactly align together. Jim’s version has some details new to me.

Happy 75th birthday to the remarkable Randy Meisner!! A rare Randy video has surfaced on YouTube: “The Nature of Love” by Poco. Not the live 1990 performance from Japan where Randy appears to have long blonde hair blown back by a Beyonce fan. No! This is a black and white video, shot in a studio with city scenes. Cool stuff. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=r0NYS4IMSyo&fbclid=IwAR0o2-FfNKpy_0IkzV2mSQCg4zQRtKSnxQM6PVQOFJuujl9jRsUS7jid 7ww

Here’s a full episode of the tv show “Fridays” which aired February 1981 and featured Randy and his band the Silverados performing “Hearts on Fire” and “Gotta Get Away.” These two songs have been on YT as clips but it’s really nice to see these performances incorporated into the whole episode as it was originally shown. Plus the video quality is better than the YT clips I’ve seen.

Randy’s songs are around 15:50 and 27:50 plus he’s shown at the end right before the closing credits.

Randy is performing TITTL with Roger Varian and others in 1993. A portion of this video was posted here previously on this thread from someone’s Twitter account but this is the complete song on YT. (not sure why it’s not embedding)

Thanks, Dreamer. I agree about Randy doing a great job with AG. He sang it with the World Classic Rockers. I’m guessing that he hadn’t played bass on PEF for years before this performance.
