I found this one tonight... Randy's first band "The Poor" featured on an episode of Ironsides! You only get to see him for a milisecond, but I thought it was cool nonetheless.

Hey good find, Soda. I didn't know this either. Not exactly either of their best work, but not bad. Okay, RG or BK any idea what years this was done?

The song is from the album One More Song which came out in 1980. Doesn't he look gorgeous there!! So tall and sexy and, well, you know the rest. :D Finding a Randy video is always an unexpected beautiful surprise. I wish there was a way to keep them

There's another Randy video on YouTube - Hearts On Fire. YAYAYYAYAY!

Glad to see another Randy video! I'm glad you can make that link work for you, RG. Too many times the videos get snatched off of YouTube. For instances, Don's videos for Johnny Can't Read and Heart of the Matter always get rejected from YouTube. Luckily, I downloaded them using keepvid, and now I can watch high-quality videos of the songs to my heart's content.

Soda, I'm loving that video! Not just for Randy, but because I love all those songs!

I will admit that lately I've been landing on Randy songs via my IPod and listening to them carefully. He really had/has(?) an amazing voice. I mean, it was beautiful. Every time I hear, "i've always been a dreamer" I do get that butterfly feeling. There are certain songs and certain lyrics that do that to me.

I can't recall what I was listening to the other day, I think it was TIE and you can hear Randy so beautifully harmonizing.

Meis is so modest and humble. Nelson was his hero. someday he will be remembered and honored similar to what these rock n roll legends adored Ricky.

oooh!!!! Thank you whitcap!!!!!!!!!

I love hearing him talk about the early days especially.

Some comments:

This was done in 1988. He says he talks to Don Felder and Don Henley regularly?

Did I hear that right at 24:30? Is "Too Many Hands" a song about mankind destroying "Mother Earth"?? Wow, I'm seeing that song in an entirely different light now.

I think Henley was on good terms with Randy and Bernie in the 80s. I remember an interview with Don from the mid-80s where he talked about talking to Bernie.

Hi all, an interview of Gene Clark and Randy is on youtube. If this interview is already posted on EOC, please forgive ... and if not, go to youtube and enter "byrd gene clark home video of a great interview" -- it's the first listing that comes up. (Sorry, I can't get the link to work!) Randy comes on at 19:00 and talks for eight minutes about Rick Nelson, Soul Survivors, his twins, The Eagles and their 1970s lifestyle (including a mention of the Third Encore parties), Rick Roberts, and playing the bass, about which he is remarkably modest. Very sweet and just a tad nervous; altogether a really pleasant man. Again, please ignore this posting if this interview is already on EOC. Happy New Year to everyone!

I wonder if he ever participated in those shenanigans...or just felt pressured to...I mean he was married and had 3 kids. That's part of why he left..as he even says it got to be too much.
he seems like the type that even if he did fool around on his wife, he probably felt awful about it.

From what I have read, Randy had some actual girlfriends on the road, so I would say yes, he participated in it. The night he had the argument with Glenn, they said he was partying all night with 2 women.

Felder admitted in his book that he did & he was also married. His wife also found some letter sent to him by someone he slept with. Can't imagine how that would go over in a marriage??? YIKES
Yeah, I bet they felt guilty, but that didn't seem to stop it from happening. Women were probably throwing themselves at them.

ah yes, I do remember that now...the 2 women. haha in the doc they glazed over a lot of that to a PG level, so it didn't click in my mind as hooking up right away. Esp. when Glenn describes the Third Encore, and how they picked the "people". He makes it sound like they invited men and women, as long as they weren't "weird". when what he meant was, they had to pick good looking females. I mean...they even called their little videos of the Third Encore, "Spread Eagle" hahaha

women were definitely throwing themselves at them. I suppose it comes with the territory of being a rock star's wife. You work through it. In the long run, "we can handle some resistance, if our love is a strong one"

I believe that Randy got married really really young. I mean at like 17 or 18, so he was really still just a kid when he got married. The guys were touring for months at a time,, & so there was bound to be cheating going on. I think he even has great grandchildren at age 67!

Well we don't know that Randy WANTED to sing more than he did. We have heard the opposite actually; that Randy at times was uncomfortable singing lead and this was a main issue in Randy's departure from the band.

Good point, TF. It's a little unfair to assume we know the reason's behind any of their decisions on this. Of course, speculating on such things gives us something to do!

Randy was the one who was reluctant and didn't even want to sing TITTL live, much less add more songs. Astrea, I know you're new, but it's a good idea to do some fact-checking before making harsh criticisms.

Not everyone likes the same things, so it's understandable that not everyone would be into Don and Glenn's vocals. However, sales figure show that there are a whole lot of people out there who find Glenn and Don's vocals to be very special indeed. Too bad Randy didn't meet with the same success as a solo artist once he left the Eagles. I own Randy's entire solo catalog and it's a crime his solo work is so neglected.

I think ALL their voices, Randy's included, are special. I daresay most Eagles fans would agree with that, even though not many of them have explored Randy's solo work.

Well we don't know that Randy WANTED to sing more than he did. We have heard the opposite actually; that Randy at times was uncomfortable singing lead and this was a main issue in Randy's departure from the band.

I knew that, but then why did he go on to record 5 more albums on his own, and continue touring and appearing on tv shows singing lead for every song?

I thought the whole thing with him leaving had more to do with Glenn than his aversion to singing WHEN he wanted to. I thought I read that he didn't not want to ever sing, he just didn't like being told he HAD to.

I also agree, tf and VA. And as far as Don's and Glenn's voices not being anything special, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I have to respectfully disagree. Personally, I give all of them very high praise when it comes to amazing voices.

I do think all together they sound heavenly, one of my favorite things about this band is the vocals and harmonizing. I just think Randy's voice is underrated for sure.

He said at the time that he didn't like being out front. He has a great voice and it's my opinion, such as it is, that it was his dislike of being out front that kept his solo career from being a 'success'. It certainly wasn't his voice that held him back.

I wish I could remember where I read it but I know I read somewhere that it wasn't that Randy didn't want to sing, he just didn't like being told he HAD to. But like I said in my previous post too, if he didn't like singing, he wouldn't have recorded 5 solo albums and continued to sing lead while on his own tours.

Don't know if anyone's seen this but here it is, Poco (w/ Randy) at FarmAid. Don Henley and Jackson Browne also performed.

I could be wrong but I think "TITTL" is in a different key, which is interesting because someone brought it up in the Discussion About the Eagles Documentary thread.

AstraeaLunaAvani
05-21-2013, 10:00 PM
From what I recall, Joe Walsh mentioned it in the History of the Eagles doc. Talking about the high notes at the end of TITTL, Joe said something like, "Randy could do it, but if you MADE him do it, Randy would say, "oh no man, I can't."

Just for the record, Don Henley does have a great voice, but my favorite male singer over the last 40 years, is Glenn. I love his voice. Also, he sings in my vocal range, LOL. ( I'm an alto and can sing pretty low.) I would have to add Jackson Browne's voice as a second favorite.

Yes, that's where I heard it too! I couldn't remember, until I watched the DVD again! :)

Glenn has my 2nd favorite voice in the band (well, of all the members ex and current), I like it more and more all the time!

The Rolling Stones' bassist Bill Wyman didn't move AT ALL, EVER! Literally didn't move his feet. Maybe it has to do with the personalities that are attracted to the instrument...certainly not the case with Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea, (or Timothy, really), but I can see a bassist being the less, um, flamboyant member of the band.

I am just so glad we have these videos as I never saw Randy perform live. If you ladies want to know more about the Randy/Glenn/TITTL issue, just read Don Felder's book. I started reading last week as it is out in print again and it gives more details of what Felder observed and things that Randy confided in him about singing front and center on the stage. I SO identify with Randy because our personalities are so much alike.

It doesn't really matter now what Glenn did all those years ago because no one can take away Randy's talent and no one else can even come close to doing justice to this song.

I agree completely. Randy is the only who can really sing this song. Glenn does not even come close. Unfortunately Randy will probably never be able to sing this on stage again so we have to accept the version that is put out there. Personally they should have retired the song in his honor.

Randy did sing the song absolutely beautifully. No doubt about it and I'm sorry that he was so insecure about performing it. My favorite version for sure.

I gotta agree with Brooke here. Randy's version will always be my favorite too. At the St. Louis show Glenn dedicated it to Randy before he sang it. Is he doing this at all the shows? It seems like I've heard that mentioned. And he always gets a roar from the crowd afterwards if not a standing ovation.

When it comes to harmonizing, I'm in that gray area where I'm not tone deaf, but not good enough for anyone to actually want to listen to me sing, lol. I am sure many of you have watched the "Hearts on Fire" video by now so I won't re-post it here but I have been watching it anew. Once to hear the song I liked in the 80s and then again just to watch Randy's facial expressions when he sings it. He is very sensual in this video. He looks a bit more mature and manly than in his Eagles days although he looks great there too.

His eyes and long lashes! And when he turns to the side while singing the line "Better hold me close" and gives that "look" and that smile - Whoa!! I am not easily impressed by most men but the looks that man can give - OMG! Love this video.

Good question. The first one is more sensual and paced. The energy is very different from the second one which is more upbeat.

That's the beauty of a performer that knows how to 'work it' so the performance can appeal to certain audiences. I bet the audience in the first video was more mature and the audience in the 2ed video had a more youthful presence.

Randy is just so amazing!

The first one is the one I have been watching which is slower. I like it better as it seems more like his natural singing style, more emotion, the way he sang with the Eagles.

I agree that faster paced one was intended to be more upbeat for maybe a morning show studio audience. In the eighties, the fast, jumpy style was popular for the MTV era. I am glad that style is over with.

Oooer Missus!

Just before that, Randy is smoking a joint. The next time it shows him he has the cigarette. Some have speculated that Randy is comically exaggerating the flicking of his cigarette as if to say, 'See here? Just a regular cigarette, folks. Nothing more!'

I was looking up the history of Poco today and I am not sure about the lead thing, but I saw where from 1989 to about 1991 Randy was listed as a member of Poco. I had never heard the song, highways, cars, trucks and loved it! One of my new favorites!

The song is called O'l '55 & comes from the On The Border album. The line being sung is actually 'freeway, cars & trucks'.

On the east coast we call them highways and on the west coast they're called freeways. I think LuvRandy was putting her own spin on it. :-)

Actually, RandyBaby was the first to use the word 'highways'. In Australia both words are used.

It is not that difficult when quoting song lyrics to quote what is actually being sung.

In this case there is not a question of it being misheard. The word is clearly 'freeway'(not freeways as I stated in my clarifying post). Given that three people in a row quoted it as 'highways' I felt that I needed to state what the word actually is.

Randy doesn't even sing lead on this song; you would never know it from reading some of these posts.

Once again... this is supposed to be a thread for posting videos. How often does the same thing have to be repeated before people learn to follow the rules? And before I receive any sarcastic responses, I repeat that my posts about Ol' 55 were necessary to correct an inaccuracy.

I have watched this interview several times and I think it's a really sweet interview. He seems really easygoing and kind. He's also towards the end of the interview when they are all talking outside of what looks like a veranda. Read some of the comments (at least the ones that don't make you mad, lol). I love this interview, but I think the interviewer wasn't very prepared for him. There are so many more interesting things he could have asked. Even though it was radio you could detect Randy's anxiety. Maybe it's just me but I've watched the music videos from the 70's with Randy 100x and in this video something is different about the way he is speaking and smiling almost like he lost teeth? OH I hate to say that and again is it me. I hope so he had such a pretty smile.:hilarious:

This comment made me laugh - I am sure he hadn't lost teeth :) I think the interview was around the time of the video of the Roberts Meisner Band doing TITTL. Randy definitely had a full set of gnashers then !
Yes he still looked on edge but great for a guy in his early 40's. Just think he was always uncomfortable with interviews. I seem to recall him saying he was always worried the interviewer was going to ask something he didn't know the answer to and preferred to just sit and listen.

I watched the interview and the sound may not have been the best. The other guy sounded a little weird too, like the audio wasn't quite right. The interviewer did not seem to have done his homework all that well.

I thought it funny after reading what I wrote too Suze! I guess it was probably due to aging, but you are correct he was still gorgeous. Thank you so much, Funk! That was wonderful. Randy's harmony on Crazy Love sounded so good.
It makes sense that each person in the band would do their most famous song, as a way of introduction to a festival audience, many of whom would surely be asking, "Who the hell are these guys?"
More puzzling to me is Randy's shirt, depicting his band with pig noses.

Farm Aid IV took place on April 7, 1990 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the Hoosier Dome. Don Henley was also on the bill. I don't guess that Randy and Don hung out backstage to reminisce about old times.

I heard an interview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbrprCfYu1U) with some of the members of Poco and Jim Messina talked about getting the last member of the group. This part starts at 6:30 in the linked YT video. Jim used the word "interviewed," i.e. Gregg Allman and Gram Parsons were interviewed, but ultimately the spot went to Randy.

Delilah
09-16-2016, 08:57 PM
Great interview(s)! It was quite insightful with Messina saying he came up with the idea of doing "country rock" while Rusty credits the Everly Brothers. Then for the Legacy album they all came together as "equals".

Also interesting is that Gram Parsons practiced with them during auditions and basically took their ideas to Roger Mcguinn to make their next record.

Love these! As far as I know, this appearance was his only on any TV show as a solo act. Of course, I'm always on the lookout for more!

Randy also appeared as a solo act (with his band the Silverados, naturally) on the Midnight Special in December 1980, the Merv Griffin Show in August 1982 and Solid Gold in October 1982.

You can see a tantalizingly brief clip of the Merv show performance "Playing in the Deep End" during a segment for the American Journal tv program in 1994, available on the L&M site.

I've been searching high and low for the Merv and Solid Gold videos but no luck.

Somewhere I read that he was encouraged by someone-Val Garay, his producer?-to push himself vocally and sing differently. I think he surprised himself that he could. I'll have to dig around and figure out where I saw that.

NightMistBlue
10-27-2016, 11:57 AM
He deliberately sang in a lower range for his solo career. He felt he had been sort of marginalized into a narrow musical role in the Eagles, only called on to play bass and sing the high notes. Like an actor who gets typecast.

I know that Val Garay had wanted to work with Randy for several years. Garay used to be the engineer on the Linda Rondstadt albums (she tells a funny/embarassing story about him in her memoir). I think he may have encouraged Randy to write more, and to collaborate with well-regarded songwriters Wendy Waldman and Eric Kaz. I don't know what Mr. Garay's musical input was beyond that. It would be interesting to know. Garay was already working with Kim Carnes at that time, and was moving in a synth-y/techno-y direction with her.

Randy gave credit to his manager at the time, Trudy Green*, for helping him to take on the challenge of doing interviews with the media and being a front man. Being a shy person, he was happy to let Glenn and Henley take over those duties in the Eagles. And this is just my theory, but I think Randy may have been a little insecure about his relative lack of education (he dropped out of high school in the 11th grade). He said something about his reticence around journalists, "Suppose they ask you something and you don't know the answer?" Randy was impressed that Henley went to college.

* Ms. Green went on to manage Heart and is currently in the big leagues, managing Mick Jagger and Aerosmith: http://www.artistshousemusic.org/videos/trudy+green

Very interesting, NMB, thanks. I wonder if what I read was in the liner notes of One More Song. Like you, I suspect not finishing high school made him self-conscious. And then he's in a band with Don Henley, with all his literary references and knowledge. Yet, Randy did manage to collaborate with some really talented people.

Thanks, re: my avatar, I love a smiling Randy :-)

Until I saw HOTE I did not realize that Henley was an English major. Having been an English major also, I suddenly realized why I thought his lyrics were so great. Especially Hotel California. He was a poet.
Randy had less formal education but I thought his contribution to Eagles' lyrics were quite good. Randy's lyrics seemed to come from deep emotions and life experiences.

That was a one-of-kind event, for them to be singing together like that, but yes, they did seem a little uncomfortable at first. I think it was Don F who wrote in his book that Glenn hired someone to teach him how to move onstage. I can see how that would be useful.
