View Full Version : Glenn Frey Working on New Solo Album!

Some of you might remember that back in late 2007/early 2008, Glenn talked about doing an album of songs from his parent's generation while they're still around (see the original topic about this here (https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=595)). Well, we didn't hear about it again and we all assumed that it had been dropped.

However, it turns out that he's been working on it all along and now it's about ready to release! It appears to have morphed into something that is not just big band / "my parent's generation" tunes, though. According to his announcement at the Fallsview Casino show (see my review (https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3231)), it's called After Hours and it might be coming out as early as Valentine's Day! He said he'd been working on it with his two keyboard players (I'm assuming he means Richard Davis and Michael Thompson). He played four tracks from it: Route 66, Caroline No, Shadow of Your Smile, and The Look of Love.

Of course, seeing as how the title is going to be After Hours.... can we expect that jewel to finally see the light of day and be officially released? I sure hope so! I adore that song!!

So exciting!

I can't wait! :partytime: I really enjoy Glenn's solo work.

So in the next 12 months we can expect to see new albums from Glenn, both Dons (possibly two from Henley) and Joe. Sounds like a good year!

Just thought it would be appropriate to add here the details from the album from my Second Night at Niagara Falls 2011 Review (https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3235):

Glenn said that night, "I hesitate to call [After Hours] a standards album, but it’s an album that explores a lot of songs and singers that I loved from the 1920s to the early 1960s. Stuff like Dinah Washington, who is my favorite female singer of that era, and Nat King Cole, Burt Bacharach, stuff like that."

I wonder what the unifying theme of the songs he chooses will be, if there is one?

I would have certainly been shocked and then very, very happy. I soooooo hope it happens!

sodascouts

Yeah, he gave no indication that there would be any original material on the album... but why raise hardcore fans' hopes by calling it After Hours, yet not put that track on it? I admit I'll be disappointed if that's the case. I adore that song. Regardless, I'm just so happy he's doing something.

Brooke
08-30-2011, 12:19 PM
Yeah, surely he will include it.

sodascouts
08-30-2011, 01:44 PM
There was a brief moment in Niagara Falls when I thought he was actually gonna play "After Hours" at the show and my heart just about stopped, but it was not to be (although the show was incredible anyway of course). If he includes the song, and if he does some shows to support the album, I hope he includes "After Hours" in the setlist.

Freypower
08-30-2011, 10:05 PM
I thought that he might play it too, but if you look at what I said in my review he was very specific in what he said about the songs covering the 20s to the 60s and that does not include After Hours. While I would like him to record it I feel that it is entirely up to him what he does.

sodascouts
08-30-2011, 10:08 PM
Of course it's up to him; that goes without saying. He's the one making the album! However, that does not preclude me from hoping that the song gets recorded. :)

Freypower
08-30-2011, 10:12 PM
No, of course not. What I meant was a message to myself (not to anyone else) not to worry about whether or not it is recorded, because I am so grateful that he is releasing the album regardless.

GlennLover
08-30-2011, 11:39 PM
I still believe that he would't have called it [I]After Hours[I] if he didn't intend to include the song. I think he would have named it something else if the song wasn't on the album. JMHO & wishful thinking.

Glennsallnighter
08-31-2011, 02:45 AM
Well I would love to hear 'After Hours' on the new album too, and as it's going to be the title I'd say we have at least a 50-50 chance of it being on.

On a related but different topic, anyone got a link to 'I'll come Running Back To You?' I loved that Glenn  dedicated it on the first night to his 'girlfriends who have come from across the globe to be here tonight'. I remember thinking at the time...... 'OMG! I wonder does he KNOW about Julie and I?'

I don't know about you guys, but I'm excited to have something to even speculate about now!

I was thinking... what other covers might be on there? He mentioned Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington... you know I don't really know anything about Dinah Washington but I plan to find out more. As far as Nat King Cole, I love that song "Unforgettable." Maybe he'll cover that?

I personally would like him to include "My Girl" but I'm not sure if that fits into his vision.

Freypower
08-31-2011, 06:42 PM
My Girl would fit into the timeframe because it's from the Sixties. Unforgettable is so well known that it may not necessarily be his first choice; I honestly don't know. This is not my era of music.

GA; the most famous version of I'll Come Running is by Sam Cooke. I was as pleased as you were when he did it. I loved the 'Los Angeles, London England, Niagara Falls' part. I was so pleased that he sang the name of my favourite city in a song.

sodascouts
08-31-2011, 06:47 PM
I'll Come Runnin' Back to You is old enough to be on that album, as is I Hear You Knockin', but I didn't get the impression those would be on there from the way he introduced them separately. Still... hmmm!

You know when I first heard I'll Come Runnin' Back to You I thought it was a new song. Some songs are timeless!

Freypower
08-31-2011, 06:56 PM
I would rather neither of those were included on the album. I think it's great that he plays them live but as you say they did not appear to be the songs he was talking about. We want to hear different songs.

According to Wikipedia, Route 66 was done originally by the Nat King Cole Trio in 1946, so that could be the only Nat King Cole song on the new album.

The "After Hours" track we're familiar with was written by Glenn and Jack Tempchin, so if it's indeed on the album, it wouldn't have been something Dinah Washington had sung.

If you haven't heard it, here it is (I'll take it down as soon as we discover for sure he's releasing it):

http://www.glennfreyonline.com/multimedia/MP3/afterhours.mp3

That being said - interesting coincidence!

Yes. I just posted because of the coincidence. I remembered that Glenn & Jack wrote it. I was looking at Dinah Washington's discography. There are a lot of familiar songs (at least to me, but I'm no spring chicken). It' anybody's guess what song Glenn picked. BTW though, Dinah is way before my time, LOL!

Sorry for telling you what you already knew! Oh well, maybe it'll be helpful to others, lol.

I hadn't heard that. Thanks Nancy! I hope it's on there.

It sure will be a different flavor than The Eagles! Glenn sounds very..... loungy (I don't think that's a word! lol) KWIM? Give him a cigarette and glass of wine or scotch to hold while he's singing aka Dean Martin! lol

Freypower

I should post one of the photos I call 'Lounge Lizard'. I always thought he had the persona to do this type of singing.

sodascouts
09-01-2011, 06:35 PM
I'm loath to use that kind of "lounge singer" description for Glenn because it has such a stigma to it.

Freypower
09-01-2011, 06:38 PM
Well no, that isn't what he is, but it's understandable that the association should pop up however briefly.

Henley Honey

I'm not really hearing the "lounge lizard" thing.
I'm hearing a really sweet remembrance of a simpler time of love not lost -- but misplaced. Music to my ears. . . . . . What a sweet song. . . . .

I should post one of the photos I call 'Lounge Lizard'. I always thought he had the persona to do this type of singing.

Glenn himself stated on The Mark & Brian Christmas Special 1997 that 'After Hours' was written for The Allnighter album, his "martini & black tie period" & he said "this sounds very lounge lizard". When I first heard the song it struck me as sounding that way, but without the negative connotation, although I would normally attach that connotation to the term in most other instances.

'After Hours' is such a beautiful song that I couldn't possibly associate any negativity to it :).

I hope Glenn tones down the self-deprecation when he promotes the new album.

Freypower
09-01-2011, 09:16 PM
Given that he was not self-deprecating about what he was working on, I don't see any reason to think that he would do that when he will have something to promote.

On the other hand he may not promote it at all. I do wonder when Don Henley's album is going to be released now and what Glenn's strategy will be in relation to that.

Glennsallnighter
09-02-2011, 07:27 AM

Lol indeed! Lou and I were discussing possible album covers and our ideas included maybe a black and white background, Glenn  in a suit (tux?.... Not sure) head and shoulders, soft lighting, and perhaps the only splash of CPU or a glass of red wine or a burgundy Rose against a baby grand piano. That would be the only colour as such. I have it in my head but don't think I could recreate it on paper. I wonder too will he include a little booklet with pics in it

Just an idea though, has anybody gotx any others?

sodascouts
09-02-2011, 01:49 PM
The days of wine and roses... sounds lovely!

While I'm not hugely keen on suits, there's something about a man in a tux.. but how about a tux that's been loosened a bit? It is entitled After Hours... I'm thinking of this kind of look:

http://www.glennfreyonline.com/images/GFreyOYLTux.jpg

I like the idea of the incorporation of the piano, too!

What you describe kind of reminds me of this in some ways:

Me like!

Glennsallnighter
09-02-2011, 03:53 PM
Yep, that's the kind of idea, though maybe lose the cigarette and put the Rose across the piano. Obviously he'll look more mature too!

As they say, great minds think alike! Just yesterday I had been wondering what the cover might look like. I was thinking along the same lines as the rest of you. I am partial to tuxedos, having been in the men's clothing business many years ago & having a lot of experience with formal wear. I remember reading a trade article on tuxedos which stated "looking at a room full of men dressed in tuxedos is like looking at a room of naked men".:censored: I love the idea of having the tie undone & the shirt open at the neck. The grand piano is a must & the rose completes the look. And yes, loose the cigarette! It doesn't have the same connotation today (at least for me) as it did years ago. I don't know about everyone else, but I really don't know how I am going to make it to February (I pray no later) without going off the deep end in anticipation!!!!!!

Well I hadn't posted in this thread yet, partly because I was off of the board during most of these posts and partly because I didn't want to put a damper on everyone's enthusiam. I basically said the same thing in Don's thread about his upcoming album that I'll say here. I'm not a huge fan of this kind of music (no matter what you call it) so the idea of this doesn't send me over the edge with excitement. However, I'll keep an open mind and, hopefully, be in for a pleasant surprise.

Now having said that, I did think The Shadow of Your Smile was absolutely beautiful when he did it in Niagara Falls. And ... if he were to include My Girl, I'll Come Running Back To You, and I Hear You Knocking then I may totally change my mind.

Freypower
09-09-2011, 05:24 PM
I think that if the spectrum of songs covers the time period from the 20s to the 60s then he won't include a lot of 60s songs. I in fact hope he doesn't include those songs because I want to hear something different.

Freypower

I was reading in Rolling Stone that Irving suggested to Lindsey Buckingham that they release his new album themselves. I wonder if Irving has suggested something similar for another of his clients. It seems logical.

sodascouts
09-21-2011, 08:27 PM
I wouldn't at all be surprised. Remember that in the nineties, Glenn actually formed his own label called Mission Records with the late Peter Lopez and had planned to release a solo album on it. Then, the Eagles machine kicked into gear again and that album never materialized. However, now that he's got a new project in the works, why not take the same type of approach? This is especially true since distribution is so much simpler thanks to the much-maligned but world-changing invention known as the internet.

I wish we could have more discussion about which songs will or will not be included. I like it that apart from Route 66 the songs we know about so far are not that well known (that includes Caroline No). I hope he doesn't do Moon River, for example. I never saw the appeal of that song. Of course if he does do it I'll live with it.

PM, I understand where you're coming from, but after such a dry spell, this is definitely exciting for a lot of Glenn fans!

It's hard for me to guess what might be on the album as he's taking his pick from apparently three or four decades of material!

I think it's interesting that he didn't mention that the album would have any original material, yet we know that the Frey/Tempchin song "After Hours" will be included. I wonder if any more original songs will be on it?

I get it too, PM. It's like if your favorite author normally writes mystery/suspense novels and suddenly writes a science-fiction book. You can still appreciate the style of their writing but not necessarily the content.

It's kind of the same with music. Luckily, I love of all types of music (except maybe rap) and like Soda, I'm hoping for some original material to be included. Having heard him sing some of these songs at Niagara Falls, I'm excited about and anxiously await the release of After Hours.

It's funny, FP. I am more familiar with The Shadow of Your Smile & The Look of Love than Route 66. I've loved Moon River since I was a child, but I'd rather Glenn do other songs. I'm sure I will love anything he does.

The Shadow of Your Smile and The Look of Love are two of my favorites. I hop around all over the place as a rule and Sinatra never leaves my CD player. I'll definitely be getting it! I have all of the solo studio albums by all seven current and former members and I really like Glenn's work. As for the material, I'm not too familiar with the music from the era he's covering so most of the stuff on the album will probably be new to me :)

I totally get what you are say too, Cathy. As I said earlier in this thread, I'm not thrilled about Glenn's choice to record this type of album either. I'm hoping that there are some new songs on it as well, but I'm not holding my breath. Since he is going for such a wide time period, it's hard to say what songs he may choose to include. Of course, I hope all my doubts are put to rest and I end up loving it.

In any event, I will buy the album just as I will buy anything new that any of the guys put out. I mean how will I be able to play the Survivor games for any of them if I don't buy them.

I will say that Glenn's version of The Shadow of Your Smile in Niagara Falls was gasp-and-swoon-worthy!

Going to add my 2 cents also since you asked FP. I won't be buying it either just as I won't be buying Don's country album. I have all the other solo works by the guys but these don't thrill me a bit. Doesn't mean that down the line I won't feel the need to add them to my collection and will do so, but right now, no. That being said, I will admit that if it was Timothy doing either of these kind of albums, they would be order ASAP. Go figure!

That's where I am. Glenn always seems to be about 20 years ahead of me. I didn't like his "sax and horns" early solo stuff in my 20s when it came out, but in my 40s, it's growing on me. Maybe I'll like the crooning when I'm 60, but I'm not there yet.

I remember when he was first talking about doing this he mentioned it being something for his parents. I guess they're probably 80-something and would love this kind of thing!

Still, even for someone like me who was born when the Eagles were ruling the radio in the mid-70s, I can appreciate the older tunes if Glenn sells it with the kind of impassioned vocals he gave at Niagara Falls. I think you guys will be pleasantly surprised!

It's good to hear other people's views & I certainly hope that people will be persuaded if those of us who buy it rave about it.

Just on the 'crooning' thing; I wouldn't call the way he sang those songs at Niagara Falls 'crooning' any more than I would use that term to describe Sinatra's singing. This is despite the fact that on the face of it it seems the appropriate term. He just sang them in an extremely impassioned way. He put absolutely every part of himself into them.

Remember when he anounced in Niagara Falls that he was doing the album he said he wanted to do this for his parents while they are still alive?

We don't even know all the songs that will be on the album yet. Remember that "Caroline No" is a Beach Boys song from the 60's & Timothy has also done it.

As Soda says, if he does the songs the way he sang them in Niagara Falls (and I'm sure he will), you may be "pleasantly surprised".

I'll definitely be getting the album. The snippet from Niagara Falls that I heard on YouTube was gorgeous.

Just had to change my password at work this morning - had to give up "After Hours" - but got to change it to "Analog Man". Yes, I'm excited about new stuff from the boys. :nahnah:

Don's album though, I am not sure about; especially if it contains remakes of Eagles songs.

All the guys need to put their back catalog on iTunes so you don't have to pay outrageous amounts to resellers for out-of-print albums.

cough::GLENN:cough

Seriously, doing so allows more fans get access to the songs for less, and the artist gets paid instead of the reseller. The reason not to do this is..........?

From things I've read from other artists, iTunes takes too much % off the top for themselves, as well as charging more for songs than other sites. There are a lot of artists who only go with sites like Amazon for this reason. However, they do at least put it on an internet download store somewhere!

I will be buying Joe's album since it will definitely ROCK!!!

Sidenote-and sorry we've gotten off track of Glenn's solo album but wonder what has happened to the soul album that was mentioned early on along with the country album from Don. Hopefully we'll still see it in the future also.

BTW-Ann thanks for the Caroline No video. Something about it I really, really like but I can't put my finger on it! :lie:

Glenn isn't the only artist releasing a 'covers' album. I am not sure about the title of Sir Paul's effort. It contains a couple of originals.

Don't you think that we should have seen or heard something by now if it was going to be released on time? Aren't albums usually available for pre order from Amazon or the like quite a bit before actual release or is it different because Glenn is finding his own distributor? Expando was available for pre order wasn't it? I'm getting anxious :worried: :sigh:. I sure hope that I am wrong .

This is the response I got from Amazon last week after selecting 'Contact Us' and asking if they had information on it:

Hello,

I understand you want to know when will the new Glenn Frey's album be available at Amazon.com.

Our latest information indicates that the 'After Hours' album hasn't been released yet and the expected release date is not known. As soon as a release date has been determined for this item, we will add that information to our website.

While we are confident that copies will be made available, we cannot provide more precise information about the fulfillment of the order.

I'm sorry I don't have better news for you at this moment. The only suggestion I can give you right now is to check our website from time to time to see if this item is available.

I hope you understand my limitations. If you have any further queries or concerns, do let us know. We'll be happy to assist you.

Good job on contacting Amazon, VA. I guess we just take a deep breath and wait patiently for Glenn, Don, and Joe to release their albums. Can't really say I'm shocked though. Honestly, I would be more surprised if the album was released in mid-February than I am at any delay.

Since solo shows have been announced I think After Hours will probably be released in May. I had a feeling Glenn and Joe were waiting til after the upcoming Eagles shows to release their albums. If they had released them in February then they would have only had a month to tour and promote them before going on the road with the Eagles. Since the Eagles don't plan on going on the road again til fall they will have plenty of time this summer to tour and promote them properly.

I was surfing the net today looking for any new info on Don's and Glenn's new albums and came across a video clip of Glenn doing "The Look of Love" at the Niagara Falls show. Couldn't find it posted on YouTube but it's in a Glenn thread on IMWAN. I'm reluctant to post the link here (admin may want to look at it). Heads up, Glenn fans...the comments were rather uncomplimentary -- but I thought it worth pointing you in the direction of the video (2:18 so it's not the whole song). Was shot from a distance but the audio is decent.
