Holiday for me today! :yay:

Heading for town later to get the shingles vaccine. Fun! My mother is insisting I get it and she's probably right and my insurance pays so.....I certainly don't want shingles.

Also trying to catch up here! This place has been crazy this weekend! Wonder why!

It's time to stand in front of my closet and ask myself..."What outfits scream out I want to get my EdD and be department head someday etc etc"and which ones are chillaxin' clothes??

There's also 10lb of laundry to do in there too...ugh...I love school holidays :D

Just a comment here: the shingles shot doesn't prevent you from getting the shingles. It lessens the severity if you do get it. Better safe than sorry. I got the shot last year. Good luck.

Tending to my hand which I just made a hole in with a flat blade screwdriver. :brickwall: I was trying to open an old iPod for someone to put in a new battery and in trying to open the damn case my hand slipped and ran it right into the palm of my hand under my thumb. Don't need stitches but it's gonna smart for awhile!

Austin, try some "New Skin". It's amazing stuff! On places where a band aid won't stay, put 'new skin' on it and it will really help you out.

I should put that in the thread of 'stuff we recommend'.

WalshFan88
02-22-2013, 12:35 AM
Definitely going to try the New Skin. It is SORE and it couldn't be in a worse location. Every time I move my left thumb it burns like mad. Guitar playing is out of the question until it heals lol. It is a little crater from where it went in. But not too deep, just wide and red! Hopefully it won't be too infected, I've been using ointment on it and keeping an eye on it all day. I've heard of liquid bandaids before (which don't work well) but I will try the New Skin tomorrow when I go get some.

On the good news I guess, I got the new battery in the iPod and sent back to my friend... Jeeze, all that. Next time I'm going to try and find a pry tool of some sort and preferably plastic and dull!!! :hilarious:

I had a short seminar this morning so I stayed behind for a while and had a good chat with some of my friends in the canteen. Just done a big, healthy grocery shop (I am so determined to get super fit by the summer - well, in general, but that's a good first goal!) and I have my second personal training session at the gym this evening. Just taking this couple of hours to cook some stuff for the week ahead, organise my gym kit and check in online. A nice, easy first day back!

Always good to stay fit and eat healthy. Especially when you walk outside as well. I lost 40 lbs when I just walked. It took me a while since I was dieting and just walking. LOL. I hope you keep up with your goal Troubadour. I know you can do it. It might take some time, but stay with it.

Just mixed up two loaves of bread, have them sitting in the sun to rise. The evening of the documentary debut on Showtime, I had friends for dinner, and I went to Great Harvest and bought a loaf of 'real' bread. That's how I learned. No lessons or anything. I learned through chords printed out and YouTube at first. Once I developed a better ear, I started slowing down records with a trainer (device that slows down CDs) and breaking songs down that way. But YouTube was instrumental in me learning to play. And then once I started playing in a group it went from there.

I fully believe in using songs as vehicles to learn with. I know some are against trying to learn songs at the beginning but rather just working with chords and making up songs but I was not getting into this to write songs or be original. I was about playing the songs I love as accurately as possible from the beginning. Very much an Eagles mindset - sound as close to the recordings as possible live and as perfect as possible. More of a tribute band mindset but many different songs from different bands/artists. I never wanted to read music (it's really not done much in rock n' roll and my heroes certainly didn't), nor was a real technical theory diehard. More of that bluesy rock thing.

It doesn't work for everybody but selftaught was for me.

It's funny you mention Horse With No Name - the very first song I learned how to play...

Take It Easy is a challenge because there are soooo many chords in it. Getting the strumming right is the hardest part (at least it was for me) after you get the changes down.

Already Gone would be a great song to play - 4 chords. G, C, D, and F. And if you want, you can skip the modulation (C > G > F) at the end and just play the songs main progression G > D > C. They did that themselves on Farewell 1.

LOL it's actually my dad's motorcycle. He normally takes me around. I actually want a dirt bike. I might have to look around for one of those. LOL my legs are too long for one of those though. If I stay on one for more than 20 minutes, I go numb and cramp like heck. LOL. I always love motorcycles, but I have crashed on one before leaving school too. That was so embarrassing. I know what you mean about singing and playing at the same time. That was very tricky for me - because you naturally want to focus on one or the other, and you have to do both and multitask and it's tough. I just had to focus on getting the guitar rhythm as good as I could, and then try to introduce singing but not losing the rhythm of the song.

As long as it's fun - it's all that matters! I love playing whether it's just myself in a room or in front of a large crowd onstage - I enjoy it and that's what matters. So I definitely understand what you mean there. It's a thrill to play the songs you like. :)

Today of all days, the customer has decide to install some random security patches. I have to test the system when it comes back up, no problem. They just can't tell me when that will be. They were to start at 4 and they haven't started yet. I could be up all night and I only had three hours sleep last night!

Seriously - what the crap is wrong with corporate America. These folks really need to work on their priorities!

Like VA, I work mostly from home as well. But, trust me, with all the stuff I've got on my plate, there's no time for afternoon naps or doing the laundry. Heck most of the time here lately, I can't even find time to post on the board.
