HH just texted me some brief notes.

The show was only 2 hours, but was fantastic.
No new songs were added to replace any of those subtracted.
The show was heavy on Joe's material, but he was "workin' it" and was "really ON"
She and her hubby got official Joe Walsh guitar picks!
Overall the show was "fabulous!"

OK, by 'we', HH meant her and I (for the guitar picks)...poor HH - DH was elsewhere and got no picks! Yes, the concert was shorter than expected, but overall fantastic!

The security to get in was extreme, in my opinion. I walked up with real camera in hand and watched, then went to my room and ditched the camera. Metal detectors and wands and they went through all bags. Some got real cameras in but I elected not to chance it and returned to my room to ditch it. So...cell phone only. Almost all need to be photoshopped (contrast and brightness), which I need to do on a different laptop (Monday or Tuesday, depending on how other issues in my life turn out on Monday).

It was a shorter set list but it was great. Just great. When I'm able, I'll post the set list. No intermission, and so I had no chance to write in the order of songs, but I have list of all songs played, if not the exact order.

One should never see an Eagles concert on a milestone birthday...the 'after party' can get pretty involved. That is to say...ah...it may be a while before I write a coherent review.

There was a bit of Glenn-tact, plenty of Don-tact, and more Joe-tact. I hope I can fix the lighting on the pics. Mostly, I was too busy enjoying it all...

When we saw them in Indy in 2010 we had third row in front of Joe and at one point thought we got some Joetact, although the farther away you are the harder it is to tell if he's looking at you or someone else. I remember Hubby and I arguing on the way home..."He was looking at me!"..."No, he was looking at me!" Lol! But I do remember the girl who was front row in front of Joe and watching her when she was up and dancing. SHE got a lot of Joetact, and I remember thinking, "Lucky girl..."

So glad you had a good time and got some picks. How did it come about? Did he point to you two?

PM, HH and I didn't sit together (she was about eight seats towards the center from me), but before the concert she came down my way and his tech just walked up to us and started talking. I wish we'd asked his name. He asked if we were having a good time. HH mentioned it was my '21st birthday', we all got a laugh out of that. He stepped away and turned right back and handed us the picks. Eagles on the front and JW on the back. Others around us just looked at him so he returned with a few picks for them, too.

OK, I can't vouch for the order, but these are the songs they sang. The top nine or so are in the right order. The encore and a few songs before it are in the right order. The middle is what I think I remember.

Witchy Woman
Lyin’ Eyes
I Can’t Tell You Why
Walk Away
Boys of Summer

Well - for some reason, I kinda suspected it may be an abbrieviated set list. But - glad the show was fabulous just the same. And kudos to you two on getting Joe's picks. I'm so glad that you all were there, and have a safe trip home. Can wait to see and hear more about it.

I’m typing this out on my phone on the plane with the intent of copying and pasting it when I get to an internet connection. Due to the distractions, this might be a little random, plus I’m confused on what I put here already as opposed to Facebook.

I walked to the Garden Arena early and saw the metal detectors and how almost everyone triggered it and then they went through bags and went over you with a wand. So I turned around and went to my room and ditched the camera and purse. I wanted to wear a long-sleeved shirt and so I wore a black one with a Pittsburgh Penguins logo on it. I mention that because on this walk back and forth and during the security process, many security people commented on the shirt. So I might have been able to sneak a camera in, but I didn’t try.

Those in the front row got VIP wristbands. Besides all the ushers, there were a lot of security people and if you held your cellphone aimed at the band for any length of time (like to take video), they jumped right on it. In addition, there were a lot of Sheriffs Deputies walking around.

They had Steuart up front, it’s not a big stage, no room for him to hide in the back like he normally does. Sorry to say, Steph, this meant he was blocking my view of Will almost the entire night. It took about six or seven songs for me to even see that Will was there.

The people behind me were ‘older’ and didn’t want to stand. The couple to my left seldom stood and none of the people to my right stood the entire time. Most of them left before the end of the show. What a colossal waste of front row tickets.

All of them sounded great. Glenn did not make any jokes at all, except when Timothy introduced him, he said he ‘was from Detroit where mother is half a word’. Before Lyin’ Eyes (after Witchy Woman), he said it was from 1972 and now they’d move up a few years to 1975. He said that 1975 had been a very good year for the Eagles, that he and Don could afford to go to restaurants and pay for their own dinners. Then he talked about Dan Tana’s and how it was a mecca for pretty girls and it inspired them to write the next song and they wrote it in two days. He invited everyone to sing along if they knew the words.

Before Long Run, Don introduced it by mentioning the 40th anniversary coming up and saying the next song definitely applied.

At one point Glenn mentioned being together for almost forty years. He then corrected himself by saying it was forty years as they'd been playing in Aspen at this time forty years ago. He did not mention a tour.

Several times Glenn and Don got together on stage and spoke privately, laughing or smiling at the end.

Glenn started introducing the musicians by saying they'd all been together since 2001. When finished, he introduced Timothy, saying he'd been with them since 1977, and he sings up high and plays down low. After that, Timothy introduced Glenn by calling him the Master of Ceremonies, the one responsible for getting it started back in 1971. Then I think he called him their fearless leader.

After that Glenn introduced Don by calling him the best singer and songwriter he'd ever worked with, and referred to him as his good friend. Of course, at no time during the entire concert was even a hint said in reverse. Glenn then said the next guy needed no introduction before introducing Joe.

They all sounded great and as the pace picked up they really seemed to enjoy themselves. As usual, Joe was on fire.

A good portion of those in the front rows didn't want to stand. Those around me weren't singing, either. I doubt I'll go to a casino again for a concert. It didn't make for good crowd interaction.

When they did their final goodbyes they went from one end of the stage to the other. It was here that I got my best eye contact from Glenn. it was a special moment for me.

I'll let HH tell about the boy on stage as they said their final goodbyes. I've treated myself to some pretty good birthday presents in the past, but this topped them all. I'd like to thank HH and her DH for all the birthday treats. They were great!

Now I can look forward to the Seger concert on the 19th. And of course an Eagles tour soon. The memory of this (and a Steelers win tonight, although that’s not going well at the moment...) should help get me through what is on tap for the next days.

Thanks for the review Verna! I'm glad you had such a great birthday night, and that you got at least some Glenntact! I know! If you don't like the Eagles enough to stay around, then let someone else have your front row seats. There are fans who would walk across broken glass to get those seats!

Prettymaid
11-07-2011, 02:47 PM
The band might understand seeing empty seats in the front row, but I don't think anything could be worse than this. These are excerps from my 2009 Indy review where the band gets a little 'gift' from a front row center concert goer.

We talked with our concert 'neighbors' for a while, and then it happened - a man with a laminated Eagles badge around his neck walked in front of the seats stopping occasionally to announce the 'Eagles standing/sitting policy'. He was very polite - more imploring than dictating, but gave us the rules nonetheless. We were to basically look around during slower songs, and if the majority of people were seated we were to stay seated. But if it was a faster song and the majority of people were on their feet, it was okay for us to stand. I guess the point was that since we were in the front, we could potenetially ruin the view of the people behind us, which could cause a ripple effect...

Okay, here's where it gets juicy! There were two couples sitting in front of Hubby and me. One of the couples arrived during the second song, therefore missing 'the rules'. One of the women was a beautiful blonde and got plenty of notices by Joe and Timothy. They kept looking her way the whole night. As soon as Witchy Woman started these two women were on their feet dancing and immediately out comes the sheriff! He stands right in front of them with his hands in a praying position imploring them to please sit down. The woman who arrived late said, "You've got to be kidding me!" as he went away. She continued to stay on her feet and he immediately came over again making the same gesture. She then made her own gesture toward him and stormed out! Her husband kept looking in the direction in which she had gone, but made no attempt to go after her. All the while, I'm missing much of WW, due to these distractions! She did not return until after the intermission. More about her later...

At this point the woman who has stormed out is back (and pretty drunk). She is not standing up even when everybody else is on their feet, and while seated she has both hands held high flipping the bird to the band! Hubby told me that at one point Glenn looked at her like this , as if to say, "Why? Why are you doing that?" Poor Glenn, he didn't have a clue!

I actually thought about this myself this morning while I was reading the review by VA. I remember there being several conversations regarding this a couple years ago and even a couple shows that actually had it written out and placed on the seats as the audience arrived. I can recall some of us here stating how we were more concentrated some times on "the rules" and when we should stand (having to look around to make sure others were also) than the actual music. :headscratch:

I knew it was gonna be a good night when I opened my envelope at the All Access party and my tickets read: Section B Row 1 Seats 8 and 9. :thud:
Seat 10 was dead center. If I ever complain about bad seats you all have permission to give me a big, fat "Stevie Smack".

As VA said, security was pretty tight which is understandable. There's a lot of nuts out there -- and they seemed to have more than their fair share in Vegas -- this coming from a NYC girl. For any borderers going on the 19th, regular cameras were OK. Security only really cracked down if they thought someone was video recording. I'm gonna try & download some phone-camera pics but they may not be so great. They were checking bags more for weapons or "sharp objects" than for cameras.

I got alot of "Joe love" which was fabulous -- as was the entire concert. I think he thought it was my birthday, not VA's. Sorry VA! And I'm loving the guitar pick. I've gotten the generic pick in the past, but this one is flashier with "Eagles 2011" on one side and big JW initials on the other side.

There seemed to be longer stretches of time in between songs -- they didn't seem to flow right into one another, but that was OK. It kinda gave you time to regroup and anticipate the next song. When they played HC as their fourth song, I knew we'd be getting the abbreviated set list and I think VA is right about casino shows. I'm not sure, but I think they have time-restriction rules that must be followed. I'm not complaining -- but I guess you just get spoiled if you've been lucky enough to see the 3-hour show.

7 Bridges Road was beautiful. Although I personally prefer when they hit the stage "hard" with a rocking song, 7BR never fails to showcase their beautiful blending of harmony. I was mesmerized.
Glenn sounded great on How Long and Don's voice was spot-on hot!
There wasn't a lot of between song chit chat and things were pretty mellow through HC, PEF and ICTYW. Things picked up a little during WW and LE, but got kicked into high gear during Walk Away. I think that was the first song where everyone was on their feet. Up till this point, it was hit and miss for dancing. After Boys of Summer, Joe kicked it up another notch with a slower, more R&B-ish version of In the City. It rocked. His guitar solo seemed longer to me than usual which was great. The band just seemed to be jamming, taking their cues from Joe, rather than playing the note-for-note "as recorded" version. The arena was rockin !! :rockguitar:

DH talked for a few minutes before they played the Long Run. He mentioned this was their next to last performance for this year (he specifically said: "This Year") and how they would be celebrating their 40th Anniversary next year. The crowd went crazy for that announcement and someone in the band joked and Don repeated it: "That's right -- we're going to Disney World." He also said: "After 40 years this has kind of become our theme song. Sing it with me" (and I did) and they played The Long Run. Fun, Fun, Fun Song.

As VA said, when Glenn did the band intro's he called Don the "finest singer/songwriter he'd ever worked with and that they'd been riding this rollercoaster called the Eagles for over 40 years." Ride on, gentlemen.

Up until this performance, I thought HC or LE were their longest songs, but they played Life's Been Good next and it was about 8 minutes long.
First Joe gave the usual (but fun) intro about how he'd like to apologize to everybody for this next song -- in case your parents played it the whole time you were growing up -- and how it would explain why you are a "little different". I could hear him say this a thousand times and it makes me smile every single time. Anyway, Joe nailed it. He just wailed away on the guitar. Again, it seemed to be a more R&B-ish, loose version. They seemed to be just playing -- having fun and jamming away. It was heaven.

Next came Dirty Laundry and Funk 49. In the opening of Funk 49 Glenn and Joe played back and forth and off each other -- a "can you top this" kind of back and forth riff. It was really fun & playful, but then Joe played the opening notes and the crowd hit their feet. The horns were outstanding as well. Scott looked like he was having a fun time too and yes, Steph, Will was on top of his game too. I LOVED this song. How could you not?

Next came Heartache Tonight. Glenn captured the audience as usual and had everyone on their feet. I just love this song live. Its always a little different and always alot of fun.

On LITFL, Don's voice was spot on. He just amazes me every time I hear him sing. Once again, though, Joe just seemed to capture the stage. He played it loose and off the cuff and this was my favorite song of the concert. You could tell Joe was having fun and playing "in the moment".

Everyone was back on their feet for Take it Easy (which is my personal favorite for its beautiful vocals and harmony) and they stayed on their feet for RMW which again had what seemed to me to be a funkier - more bluesy kind of vibe. All too quickly, they kicked in to the first few notes of Desperado and it was over. Sniff. Once again, Don nailed it. His tone. His delivery. His stage presence. I was a big, happy puddle of mush. Can't wait for the next one -- and the one after that.

The end. HH. :thud:

Oh. Forgot the story about the boy on stage.

There's a picture (mayble Soda can find it quickly and post it) of a little boy sitting on Don's lap (lucky) center stage after a concert. He looked young-ish -- maybe about six at the time.
He was there on Saturday night, wearing a T-shirt with a picture of that shot on it and they brought him on stage at the end of the show for a "kodak moment". They gave him drum sticks -- lucky kid -- and took new pictures with him. I'm not sure, but I think DH told him to stick around after the show and have his pic taken again. He bent over and whispered something in his ear. Oh to be that little boy! Look for the pic on a google site soon. Cute kid. I don't think he's related to DH but you never know.

HH's review reminds me...I think it was during Funk #49 when Joe was playing, as HH said, more just jamming, he went off on a riff and Steuart's brows went up and he looked over at Glenn with question and surprise on his face. Glenn was smiling and watching Joe, Timothy was looking at Joe then at Steuart like 'Wow, where'd that come from?' It sounded great of course, and I missed any other interaction because Joe's playing demanded that you watched his fingers on the guitar.

Yes. He did seem to struggle a little. I hesitated to comment or dwell on it because in its totality, his performance was outstanding and the struggle minimal , but he did seem to have a bit of a problem at times -- especially on TITTL. That key might be harder for him than others, but it almost seemed like an oxygen issue. Like he didn't have the breath in his lungs to back it up. Does that make sense to you?

It could very well have been a slight chest cold issue. Despite all, he did an outstanding job -- which shows his true professionalism, but he did seem a little off his game. Regardless, it was fabulous show.

It was HH that recognized him from that picture, and he had on a t-shirt with that picture on it. It was so nice to see. They recognized him from stage, I think. He was lifted up onto the stage by his Dad (I guess it was his Dad) as they did their final waves and even though it was almost right in front of me I missed it. You can imagine who I was looking at instead.

When Glenn finished his walk across the stage, he bent down and spoke to the boy, then put his arm around him. By then, Don was there and Don smiled and spoke to him for a few minutes, kneeling down a bit to his level. He'd been given a fistful of drumsticks by someone before Glenn and Don got to him.

Once again HH and VAisFEL - a huge thank you for the reviews and pictures. They are very much appreciated by this Eagle lover! I'm glad you all enjoyed the show. I sooooo wish I could have been there, but it looks like I'll be waiting until next year to see the guys. I know that all the guys struggle with their voices from time to time, but, surely, they will do a few shows in their 40th anniversary year even if they don't do a full tour. (Now - I'd better be right! )

That was so cool of Don to bring the little boy up on stage for pictures and drumsticks. Is this the picture that you were thinking about earlier, Verna? Was it the same little boy at the show on Saturday night?

Yep. That was him. Still cute too! He had two sets of sticks in his hand, and yes -- I'll admit it -- I wanted to grab one set and & run but thought better of it. I didn't want to make him cry -- or catch me. The kid looked fast!

And where was that picture taken? Wasn't it at one of Jess's shows?

Yep, it was at a show Jess attended. Maybe Wichita? So freakin' adorable!

Thanks for the reviews and the photos, guys. I'm glad you had a good time.

I think it's one of the publishing arms of Warner Music.

The Eagles seem to be hit the most with this copyright thing. So many of their videos are taken down, & it really pisses me off. This doesn't seem to happen with most bands, only the Eagles!!!! They are mean, those Warner Chappell people!!! I don't think it has much to do with Don, or any of the guys.

You did your best, and we appreciate your efforts!

I'll second that. ANY photo is worth it, especially for the person taking them - it reminds you of the show, and your memory fills in what the photo might lack. You can look at it and think I WAS THERE!!!

Freypower, Thanks for the link to that thread. I read some of it & it was so involved it was getting me just about CRAZY!!! I do see that the removal of the videos does have something to do with Henley, & his Publishing Co.

I don't know, I really think allowing people to see the videos would bring in the young generation of fans, who weren't even around in the 70's. This is their way of discovering the older stuff. When I go to videos, I'm maybe one of the few who reads the comments that people make. On the Eagle videos where the sound is removed, people do write nasty stuff about them. It's a turn off to a lot of people. There are so many factors to consider here about the "rights" but I don't see where most artists object to the YouTube stuff the way the Eagles do. To me it just sucks!

To those of you who can still see the Vegas videos, it is because you are outside the US.

Re: videos on Youtube

People who were at the shows like to re-live them by seeing videos.

We're still waiting for the Eagles to bring our an official LROOE live DVD, which has been talked about off and on for ages - and perhaps it will come as part of the celebration DVD which has been mentioned for next year(fingers crossed).
I've been to quite a few LROOE/Summer Tour shows and would love to have a DVD as a reminder of them.
Although I like to look at the videos on Youtube, I'd much rather have a good quality official DVD.

Also, if the're so worried about copyright etc, why don't they post some 'official' live videos on the band's website and let fans download them for a reasonable payment. Fans do love to see live performances.

Freypower

Glenn was very positive about the DVD but it was a 'history of the Eagles' DVD wherein we would presumably get to hear them play On The Way Home amongst other 'influences'..

I have no idea why they didn't release an LROOE DVD when the songs were all still fresh, before they dropped some. Now it seems too late for that: UNLESS they do revise the setlist & release a DVD of the new setlist.

I can't answer your question about their attitude towards downloading even for payment. They seem to be utterly set against it.

I guess I'm in the teeny tiny minority here. I totally understand Don's ferocious protection of his property -- and that's really what it is. He is simply preserving the value of his copyright -- of his property.

Whether his purpose is to keep it as an altrusitic musical legacy or to leave it for his children as an income or as a proprietary right -- it's up to him to decide. If he chooses to preserve the value of that copyright by limiting its use on You-Tube or any "public" domain -- we may not like it, we may hope he chooses to decide otherwise, but we really have no say in the matter.

Now before you you jump all over me -- I am speaking specifically to IP's of HIS. Not of broad-spectrum removals by a "Company", whether Mr. Henley has proprietary rights or not -- God save me from Lawyers -- cause they make me want to poke my eye out, but I have to respect ownership. Period.

Would I LOVE to see a daily dose of "Don" on you-tube, etc . . . Yep. You betcha. Do I "get" why I can't. Yep. You betcha.

StephUK

I'm with you Henley Honey. I understand why they want to preserve their rights to their performances, as they are intitled to do. I'd just like to see more 'official' live stuff made available to fans.

As a software person who detests the pirating of software, I can see the same thing in music. I have too many friends who copy music instead of buying it, too many who have outright told me they'll watch the bootleg videos instead of buying a ticket. So yeah, I can see their point.

sodascouts
11-21-2011, 09:26 PM
I think the people watching bootlegs rather than going to a show are not doing so because of the availability of the bootleg, but because of the ticket prices. It's not like "I would go, except I have these poor quality, shakily filmed, tiny videos I can see on YouTube instead." It's like, "I would go, but I don't want to shell out $230 for 90 minutes of entertainment, so I'll have to be satisfied with sucky quality YouTube videos."

So while I recognize that Don has the right to take down videos with material copyrighted to him, I think it's a foolish decision that does more harm than good. JMHO.

I agree with Soda on this one. I believe people dont go to shows not because they can see the cell phone recording of the concert, but because they can't afford the ticket price. So they get their Eagle fix anyway they can. I feel very lucky that I have been able to see Don several times this year, but not a lot of people can afford to pay $200 a ticket for a 1 1/2 hour. I think YouTube and other sites help keep people interested in the artist or introduce them to someone they might not think about seeing. I believe it brings money to the artist vs. taking it away. I admire Don very much and I agree with most that he says and stands for, but on this point I have to respectfully disagree.

Like others, I would love to see some videos of the shows I saw this year as a souvenir.

VAisForEagleLovers
11-22-2011, 09:02 AM
Well, to be honest here, I wasn't really talking about Eagles's fans. And for those that have talked to me about it, the ticket price they were complaining about was $60 or so. I can't remember the groups we were discussing. With groups like the Eagles, it seems to me that 'teasers' on YouTube actually sell more tickets than take away. But that line is hard to draw, and the reviews tend to say that you might as well just stay home and put one of their CDs in. Which is a topic for a different thread (the people who are paid to print these reviews...don't get me started).

TimothyBFan

It's a sore spot with me also. I just don't get it. I love watching YouTube videos for all kinds of groups. As for ticket prices, I can afford it but I choose not to---most of the time. I just can't justify it. I swore off doing it ever again since I have seen them and very up close and enjoyed it immensely! That's not to say that if they come close enough and it's doable with my schedule, etc.. I won't do it next year for their 40th, but only because it will be the 40th and something special. Time will tell.

Bottom line---they (and I believe I mean Don) needs to loosen up. I'm afraid they/he alienates fans quite often by pulling that. JMO.

One more point - if the video quality is bad, will people think that they're not sounding as good as they used to? I can understand Don/Eagles not wanting fans to watch a poor YouTube clip and deciding they're not worth the money...

StephUK
11-24-2011, 08:52 PM
There are pros and cons to this I think.

It's been debated many times before that if you're in the business of making money(and it's BIG money) from being 'famous' for something, then you have to accept these things. After all, it's not such a bad life being an 'Eagle' is it! (I'd swap the crappy jobs I've done over the years for it anyway:nod:)
In most cases it's free sharing between fans and no-one is selling & making money.

I hold to my original comment - put out more 'official' live DVD's; they're affordable for fans who can't get to a show, may tempt people to go to a show on the next tour, and are a keepsake for fans who've been to shows.

I don't think the videos, even if they are really good ones will take away from the band. I mean there is NO COMPARISON to seeing a video on Youtube vs. a live show. I mean come on. The live experience is just so different & a million times better. I agree that some people can't afford the tickets these days. I mean right now I'm not working, so spending $250. for a concert is a real issue for me right now. Also, people want to see the Eagles & maybe 1 or 2 other shows & it really adds up. I mean in the 70's I went to a concert EVERY WEEK, Now kids can't possibly do that at these prices. Even bands that aren't that big charge like $90. for tickets. Do 20 somethings have $500. to spend on 2 or 3 concerts? Oh & what if a guy wants to bring a date? Then double that. The prices are really insane!
