View Full Version : The Christmas Season

This is bouncing off a topic in another thread.

Growing up, I always figured the Christmas season started the day after Thanksgiving. After all, wasn't that Santa at the end of the Macy's Day Parade? ;) However, different people have different ideas of when the season starts.

Some stores are starting it in freaking October! I think that's way too early. For me, it makes something less special if it gets stretched out too long.

That being said, I don't like to wait too long to start - we need time to admire those decorations!

So, for me, the Friday after Thanksgiving is when the Christmas season starts. I even thought about changing the Border's style to Christmas Style this past weekend, but decided I would hold off until after Hotel California week which is coming up in a few days.

When does the Christmas season start for you?

My mother used to wake us up the day after Thanksgiving by playing the Hallelujah Chorus at full volume. I'm really glad she stopped doing that, but it's always been the day after Thanksgiving for me. I always put her tree up then, and the outside lights on Saturday. Then return to VA and do my own on Sunday after Thanksgiving.

Thanks for this thread! sorry I was in the other thread off topic! It is interesting to hear how Christmas traditions (decorating and other stuff) is in other countries!
Here usually played from the first Sunday of Advent Christmas music in the radio and stores but you can buy with us from mid-October Christmas cookies and such stuff in the stores, Christmas decoration usually until November.

For us (our family) it runs from December to Twelfth Night. We will put the tree up at the weekend. I will change my Border style to Christmas tomorrow & leave it there for the whole month. I also do that in October for Halloween, even though I don't celebrate Halloween.

(We need a St Patrick's Day Border style)....

It used to be that after my birthday in mid November I would start to feel Christmassy, but now all the advertising & so on is starting in October. When I was in England last September it had started then.

Oooh, I love the Christmas season!!

Starts 01st December for us. We have a felt Advent calendar that gets 2 tiny chocolate santas put in each day & sometimes 2 small tree decorations. We will hopefully be putting the main tree up this weekend - although we have so much on & Rob & I are spending Saturday night in town in a hotel, so it might not happen!

My parents are English and were adamant that Christmas season did not start until first weekend in December (my Dad had to get all the decorations out of storage in a high cupboard in my bedroom...).

I agree it loses impact if it drags on too long, and don't like seeing decorations up in the shops in October.

Julie! A St Patricks Day Border would be just sooo cool!

Ok as regards Christmas......

Well the store start setting out their Christmas goods from September and October, but to be honest I tend to turn a blind eye until after Halowe'en at least. Otherwise, as others also feel it does indeed drag out. One year I started early and to be honest I was sick of it by January.

The kids get their 'Santa' letters off first week in November, which suits as if they leave it to late let's just say Santa mightn't be able to source everything.
I get the food ordered early November simply because I won't get the collection date and time I want if I leave it any later! Who wants to pick up their turkey on 21st December?

But we really get 'into' the whole Christmas thing about the end of November, say the first Sunday of Advent. The kids have their school Christmas fair which gets us in the mood. We'll put up the tree and decorate the house at the weekend. I also get out the Christmas music for the car around now (sorry Glenn..- the kids insist). We also have a radio station Christmasfm which raises money for a designated charity each year - this year every text you send raises a euro for the homeless, and the djs give their time for free. My face DJ from all the stations (Keith Shanley) kicked it off yesterday and it's been on in the house ever since.

I think a month is probably the best lead in time. It's good enough to be prepared and have everything nice and have fun without wearing Christmas out!

As I said in another thread, when I heard Christmas music being played in Walmart in day before Halloween...well, I looked like this...:eyebrow: It annoys me when stores push the holiday season too far. Yes, I understand exactly why they do it - that's probably why I dislike it so much. As a beloved American cartoon character once said in regards to Christmas and commercialism

“I think there must be something wrong with me, Linus. Christmas is coming, but I’m not happy. I don’t feel the way I’m supposed to feel. I just don’t understand Christmas, I guess. I like getting presents and sending Christmas cards, and decorating trees and all that, but I’m still not happy. I always end up feeling depressed.

And then of course, for those of you who love A Charlie Brown Christmas as much as I do

you know that Linus tells Charlie Brown what Christmas is all about by quoting scripture.

I love reading about everyone's traditions. What about trees? Do you put up a real tree or an artificial tree?

We have a real tree, we always had one! Sometimes with real candles, but mostly with electric.
I don't like artificial trees, I like when my Christmas tree smells of wood that belongs for me to christmas.

We that is my sister and I decorate always together the tree at 23. December, we also grill since years, on this day, with our neighbors then there is always sausages and mulled wine, nice!

On the 24th of December, in the evening then, there are the presents. We always throw dice for the presents, everybody calls before a number and if you throws dice your number you gets a present!

I'm afraid I've always been a bit of a scrooge (even as a child). Can't really pinpoint why. But I do TRY to get into it. I usually get started the first week of December, by putting up the tree and decorations and making poor hubby go outside, no matter the weather, and get lights up.

As for the tree, it's been a beautiful artificial one that we bought the year after Dillon was born so it's 20 years old. Every year I threaten to replace it but it's such a beautiful one, that I keep it.

This year I am switching it up a bit. My mother LOVED Christmas so this year I have decided to get her tree, one of those slim ones and decorate it with all of her beloved German glass ornaments. She collected them and has bunches of all kinds of themes. It's gonna be a rough one this year with both of my parents gone and the house getting ready to put on the market, we've had to rearrange things. But we'll prevail and make the best of it, even if it kills me!!

My family always used to make a tradition of going to a Christmas tree farm and cutting down a big tree - as big a one as we could fit in the living room! We'd decorate it with twinkling colored light bulbs and family ornaments accumulated over the years - some going back to before I was born. Dad would hang lights outside and put up a big cross that he'd made in the 80s, along with a wooden sign reading "NOEL" in blue lights that he'd made around the same time. When Dad was overseas, we'd have a neighbor help us, but he was usually home in time to decorate.

However, since my sisters and I have moved away and my father retired, my parents hire someone to hang lights on the house and use a pre-lit artificial Christmas tree. Since it's so much smaller they don't put it in the family room; it goes in the parlor. They're getting older and it's too much effort for them to go to all that trouble with no kids around clamoring for it. The house still looks nice, but as someone who loves tradition, it does bum me out a little bit when I look at the pre-lit artificial tree and know that the blinking colorful lights I so loved as a child are in a box, never to be seen again!

Here's what our tree used to look like:

Lovely picture Nancy! It really looks festive. I find my parents are leaving it later every year to decorate, again with us all moved out I guess there's nobody to hassle them about it! I love a traditional Christmas. Some of my friends go to Florida or the Canaries, but to me it wouldn't feel festive enough!

Lovely Soda!

It is kind of sad the way things used to be. Christmas is so commercialized today and I'm nearly as bad as everyone else. I try to ignore all the holiday music and decorations until after Thanksgiving. It kind of aggravates me that now more and more of my family members (siblings and inlaws) are putting up their decorations before Thanksgiving. It's like they are forgetting all about it. I was more spirited than usual this year and actually kind of enjoyed putting things out. I usually dread the drudgery! It really is a job and the house gets in such a mess. I have a pre-lit tree that I got 3 years ago and it makes the job so much easier. My tree is also smaller than it used to be, which helps. I had also gone shopping on Black Friday (late, not in the wee hours like some people!) and actually got a couple bargains that I was wanting for gifts, so that helped too.

We have had an artificial tree for 14 years. Our kids were a little upset about it, but hey, they didn't do all the work either! We got one the same year we built our current house and it has a vaulted ceiling, so we could have a 9 foot tree. I do bring in fresh cut pine Christmas week for the wonderful smell.

I also put electric candles in all of the windows. (The ones that stay lit dusk to dawn are wonderful-no more plugging in and out every night.) I have a lighted wreath and a lighted garland around the front door. Sometimes we put out more lights, but haven't had time yet for that this year.

Yesterday I went to our daughters and took her a new pre-lit tree. She is usually a bit of a scrooge and didn't put one up because she was usually traveling home for Christmas and wouldn't be there anyway. This year she is closer to home and will drive up Christmas Eve and go back Christmas evening, so I thought she should have one. And, even tho she didn't want to admit it, she liked it! (;insert patting my back smilie; ) lol

Maybe everyone could post a picture of their tree this year?

For me -- the day after Thanksgiving is when the Season starts. I've traditionally had the day off from work so it has always been the most convenient time to "deck the halls".

We started collecting Christmas ornaments on our honeymoon -- back in the Stone Age -- 1985, and have gotten one on every vacation or concert trip we've taken. What I don't have is an Eagles ornament. Maybe I'll turn the keychain given out in Vegas into an ornament. I can add a little glitter and it's good to go!

Growing up, our tree had home-made ornaments that my mother made when she first got married and was living on a tight budget. My four sisters and I added to her collection over the years from kindergarden crafts and girl scouts. I still have some of mom's and they're my favorites. I've also gotten quite a few "favorite aunt and uncle" ornaments as gifts over the years. The little rats don't think I know they buy them for my other sisters as well! Smart to hedge their bets.

We had to stop getting a real tree and/or wreath about five years ago when my DH suddenly developed an allergy. His eyes were swollen shut about 24 hours after we put up the tree. Not fun for him, but I got some great photos! He looked like the cowardly lion from the Wizard of Oz. We now have a pre-lit, artificial tree but they're made so well these days you really can't tell its fake. No watering either -- a big plus. The only variable is that DH likes the lights on the tree to blink on and off. I like them to remain constantly on. So we compromise -- one year on, one year off. It's my year!! Just sayin . . .

We get together with my family on Christmas day -- about 50 of us. Lots of kids running around, lots of cooking and baking going on. It's a zoo, but it's lots of fun.

I'll try & post a picture of the tree, but I'm technically challenged so maybe not.

What's everyone's favorite Christmas song? I'll have to narrow my down to under ten choices!

Australia does not do 'real' trees. We don't have Northern Hemisphere trees & anyway most of the place is so urbanised there would be nowhere to go & cut one down.

Increasingly there is a tradition of festooning houses with lights & decorations. Some suburbs are covered in the things. We have never put lights outside the house, only inside. Mike actually put some up last night.

When our tree is up I will take a photo. Last year in England I got some really cool historical character decorations. My mother had bought me a Shakespeare one on her previous trip which I love, so I looked for others & got Henry VIII & his wives (I bought those at Westminster Abbey), Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria, Lord Nelson (for hubby) another one of Shakespeare & a Roman lady (from either Bath or Hadrian's Wall, I can't remember now).

I am not a traditionalist regarding Christmas songs. My favourite carols are Hark The Herald Angels Sing & O Come All Ye Faithful. My other favourites are the Pogues' Fairytale Of New York, the Pretenders' 2000 Miles & Slade's Merry Xmas Everybody. I'm afraid that songs which are so popular with Americans like Winter Wonderland & Let It Snow are meaningless to me because our Christmas is in summer.

Ive always been a dreamer

My family's tradition was a little bit different - our tree and decorations never went up until about a week before Christmas and were taken down about a week after New Years. Don't really know why that was, but my mom always did it that way so it was normal for us. We always had a real tree. Of course, I can remember when there was no such thing as an artificial tree. One of the first artificial trees I remember were those shiny silver aluminum ones. I remember my mom really disliked those. She never had artificial tree until the 90's after we kids were all grown and out on our own. I, on the other hand, have never had anything but an artificial tree cause I never was crazy about all those little needles getting all over everything and I'm just not into the decorating thing enough to be bothered with a real one.

As far as my favorite Christmas song - I have a particular affinity for I'll Be Home For Christmas.

Growing up we usually put our tree up on the 17th or 18th and took it down on January 2nd. That was as long as my mom could tolerate the house being festooned and needles being tracked all over her carpet (we always had a real tree). When she was growing up they didn't have a tree until they got up on Christmas morning and it was only up for a couple of days at the most. The reason they did it that way had something to do with her father's German heritage and traditions.

I, on the other hand, am a bit of a Christmas nut. I put up lights on the outside of my house in early November so that I am ready to turn them on on Thanksgiving night. And I leave them up through Epiphany. Since its only me and my fur children I go small scale inside with a 3 foot tree and minimal other decor but I do usually have Christmas music or a Christmas movie playing and I change my laptop background and my Border theme about the same time.

As for Christmas songs, I LOVE The Christmas Song (Chestnuts roasting on an open fire.....) always have and don't care who's singing it. My second favorite is Please Come Home For Christmas but it HAS to be sung by a certain band, tho Bon Jovi's version isn't to bad either.

Tree goes up on Sunday. Will bring it & all the ornaments back from Mom's on Saturday. Getting a bit excited now that I decided to do it that way this year. My tree is usually the same every year (all purple and silver) so it will be something different and new and a way to make the best of a hard situation. I'll take a picture and post it then.

Forgot to mention that I also collect the large, old fashion Santa Claus' and put them out every year. Plan on getting them out today or tomorrow--hopefully. Katie is moving tomorrow so trying to do it ALL at once. Yikes!

We have an artificial tree - Auckland is a bit too hot for a real tree, as we discovered the Christmas Hamish was born (1997 - we have a photo of him at one week old under the tree on Christmas morning ).

LOVE Christmas music - my #1 is Stevie Nicks singing Silent Night, and a very close second is the Eagles PCHFC (especially after hearing it LIVE last year. Thank you boys!!).

There are a couple of others which are essential to Christmas - I have to hear Snoopy's Christmas at least once (but preferably not too many more times than that!!), Do They Know It's Christmas, and Frank Kelly's narration on the 12 Days of Christmas ("you have scandalized my mother, you dirty Jezebel"). I also love to hear the Salvation Army brass band playing God Rest You Merry Gentlemen or Hark The Herald Angels - those songs seem particularly suited to the brass instruments.

Would love to see photos of everyone's trees, and FP, would love to see photos of your historical figures.

I don't know if I can pick a favorite Christmas song. There are many, such as.....

The Christmas Song
What Child Is This
O Holy Night
Go Tell It On The Mountain
White Christmas
Silver Bells
Winter Wonderland
Let It Snow
Marshmallow World

and of course, Please Come Home For Christmas. Can't remember who sings it tho! :lie: lol

I can't even imagine living where it's warm at Christmas. I must have, at least, cold weather in order to sing those songs! A bit of snow is preferable. How do you sing all those songs about cold, snow, fireplaces, and Eskimos? :hilarious: But it's where I've lived all my life, so I'm sure for those who live in a warm climate it's the same.

Food? Love turkey and dressing and all the fixings. My Mom was wondering what to have for Christmas dinner and that was my suggestion. She usually has ham. Even though we just had it for Thanksgiving I'd love it for Christmas too! And pumpkin pie too!

We don't.

When I was growing up we only had the traditional Christmas carols, which was fine by me although I am not religious. It wasn't until fairly recently that those other songs began to be heard & I honestly wouldn't think most people would sing them.

I should say though that I have spent four Christmases overseas - Venice (1972), Philadelphia (1980), San Antonio (1988 ) and London (1992).

We tend to split the Christmas music into 'Carols' (The Religious ones) and 'Songs' (The secular ones). My favourite Christmas carol has always been (and always will be) 'Oh Holy Night', while I have a few favourites in the Secular songs. They would include:

'Fairytale of New York',

'Please Come Home For Christmas' and I also particularly like

'I'll be Home For Christmas'. (Just like you Dreamer )

I also love the 'Sleighride' instrumental.

Most Irish will take Christmas Day and the 26th off. Because Christmas day falls on a Sunday, Tuesday 27th will be a day off in lieu, so offices, businesses etc probably won't open till Wednesday 28th. However the Emergency services and Hospitals will run as Normal over the holiday. many retail outlets tend to reopen on the 26th now as well, although this trend has only come in the last 10 years or so. Schools will close on 22nd December and reopen on 9th January 2012.

However we Don't have a thanksgiving so this is our Winter Holiday.

As far as Christmas plans - we have a dinner here at the house with my mom's dad (my grandpa) with my parents and I on Christmas Eve. He and my grandma are divorced so obviously we do a separate day with him. Then on Christmas Day we have lunch (me, my mom, and my dad) together and open gifts and all of that. Then on Christmas Day evening we go to a town nearby to my grandma/step grandpa's for a big dinner with my mom's entire family. And that is about it. Then we gear up for our big New Years Eve party and get food purchased. We watch movies and eat junk food. :hilarious:

She collected the glass ornaments for years. My purple lights (had to have my purple lights). Don't know if we'll go back to my big tree and purple decorations next year or not but I just felt I had to do this this year. This was my Mom's favorite holiday and she'd be glad I did this. Especially since I've always been the scrooge of the family. In fact we figured that's the reason she put in her will that I inherited ALL the Christmas decorations (and there were lots and lots of them!). The tree looks lovely, Willie, and it's so nice that you've combined your favourite things with your Mom's favourites. Somehow that seems to be so much what Christmas is about.

The day after Christmas is Boxing Day down here, it is a public holiday. Many businesses close down between Christmas and New Year, as schools are all on holiday (my son started 8 weeks holiday today).

We will be eating ham, salads, lots of fresh fruit, and pavlova. And lots of other stuff too... I make fruit mince pies, a beautiful fruit cake (not a heavy dark one which is traditional, this is my mother in law's recipe and now my favourite), and cookies. I have been making gingerbread cookies in Christmas shapes for a few years and am going to try icing them this year.

My favorite memories about Christmas revolve around when my grandparents were alive. I regret losing them both by the age of 6, but I cherish their memories.

I worked as the competition when I was at my previous employer and when they heard I was leaving the area, they contacted me under a pretense of expanding my sub-contract work with them. The president of the company finally said, "Well, I don't want to insult you and say shut down your business and come work here, but that's what I want you to do..." He'll never know how much restaint it took on my part to not jump across the table and give him a big ol' kiss!@!

Many prayers have been issued and answered!! I've had many interviews, but most ~3 hrs away from my home, and my final benefits were to run out at the end of the year if congress doesn't act. But now, I will be able to keep and stay in my own home and I won't have to relocate my elderly mother away from her home, friends, church, drs, etc.!!! I'm so blessed and fortunate for this oppurtunity, I can hardly believe it....
Now I wish I'd gone to see more Joe shows!! But now I might be able to go to some 40th and JG shows, hopefully!!!

I am past relieved, the pressure has been mounting as the year-end approached, I can't tell you how I feel....I'm still numb so far. As much as my life had changed, everything put on hold, I'm now able to get back towards "regular" and rejoin life again. I'm so grateful, the timing couldn't be better.
I got together with friends and family to celebrate a little last night. My brother had to tell his favorite Christmas story when my oldest brother (the one that resembled Joe in the 70s) was home on leave from Nam, the storyteller brother was home from Purdue and I was about 5. The brothers had been telling me constantly that if I saw Santa, he wouldn't leave me any presents, a horrible prospect to me. So I got up Christmas morning, crept down the hall, silently I thought, to find Santa still in the living room! I high-tailed it back to my room, elbowing my way through a suddenly crowded hallway filled with my whole family! I remember it took a lot of convincing to get me back out there. They had placed a 6 ft. blowup Santa in front of a lamp, it was very realistic. AS I look back, it may indicate how sadistic my family can be, 'cause when my older bro had his daughter, the Santa was sent out to Colorado so they could do it to her....:unimpressed:

Wow, FP. Fabulous decorations. Now I'm afraid to post a picture of my tree as it seems so plebian in comparison. I have a flying Santa holding a pizza box, a Laker's ornament (from our honeymoon) a couple of elfs, dolphins with Santa hats and a Santa sitting in a beach chair holding a cocktail. Not quite the same as yours -- but just as festive!

Thank you Soda. You are very sweet to A) Post the pictures for me and B) To phrase that so diplomatically. "A bit of technological difficulties" is code for "She's a techno-failure who didn't have the patience to figure it out and begged for my help in posting the pictures".

I'm going to turn the Eagles key chain that I got at the ILAA Vegas party into an ornament. It's a blue and white poker chip with "EAGLES" printed in white in the center on both sides. I'm going to add a little glitter and put it in the center of a big white snowflake. I'd post a picture, but I'd have to beg Soda for her assistance again and I'm not doing it!!

Favorite Holiday Movies / Lines:

1) It's A Wonderful Life -- Little Zu Zu: "Teacher says, everytime a bell rings an angel gets his wings".

2) Miracle on 34th Street -- Susan to Santa: "You're just a nice old man with whiskers".

3) A Christmas Story -- Mother to Ralphie: "You'll shoot your eye out".

I can't come up with three off the top of my head, but It's a Wonderful Life is also my favorite Christmas movie. My favorite quote from it is when Clarence says to George, "Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole." So true!

I don't tend to do Christmas movies! Anyway with Santa promising to bring Laura the Harry Potter series on DVD I can't see myself taking the TV on Christmas Day. If I was to watch a movie of choice on Christmas Day, I'd go dor Gone With The Wind or Dr Zhivago.
However if I do get the DVD player to myself I'd run with HFO or F1!

I probably shouldn't do this one but it is by far my favorite-----I laugh hysterically every time I see this part in the movie.

From National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation when Clark says:
"Hey! If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one. I'd like Frank Shirley, my boss, right here tonight. I want him brought from his happy holiday slumber over there on Melody Lane with all the other rich people and I want him brought right here, with a big ribbon on his head, and I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, lying, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-*ss, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey sh** he is! Hallelujah! Holy sh**! Where's the Tylenol"

And who HASN'T said this one when you've heard a bell ring?

From It's A Wonderful Life:
"Teacher says, every time a bell rings, an angel gets it's wings". Awwww.....

And of course, also to the four men who are the link we have between us all. Glenn . Don, Timothy and Joe, and families, I wish you all the best for the Christmas season too.
