I was thrilled to read that Don is receiving this award! It is richly deserved.

Henley lands MusiCares kudos for philanthropy

Eagles flies high with Person of the Year award

By PHIL GALLO

Don Henley will receive the 2007 MusiCares Person of the Year Award, the Recording Academy's honor for artists' philanthropic works.

Henley, both a founding member of the Eagles and a successful solo artist, will be feted for his professional achievements as well as his commitment to a range of philanthropic causes, from environmental issues to artists' rights concerns.

Gala dinner, concert and auction will be held Feb. 9 at the Los Angeles Convention Center two days prior to the 49th annual Grammy Awards ceremony. Proceeds from the event provide support for MusiCares' Financial Assistance Program, which assists musicians and others in times of financial, medical and personal need. The Recording Academy will make the announcement today.

In 1990, Henley founded the Walden Woods Project to lead the effort to preserve Walden Woods, the 2,680-acre ecological area surrounding Henry David Thoreau's Walden Pond in Massachusetts. He also founded the Caddo Lake Institute in his native East Texas, a privately operating foundation to act as an "ecosystem-specific" sponsoring entity, underwriting local wetland science and conservation education, including cultural and ecological research and monitoring.

Henley also co-founded the Recording Artists' Coalition, a nonprofit group formed to represent the interests of recording artists with regard to legislative issues, and to address other public policy debates that come before the music industry.

Annual event is always heavily attended and features an array of superstar acts performing the honoree's music. Last year's event, honoring James Taylor, was the first to be released to DVD.

(Oh, to be able to attend that ceremony next February!!)

Yes, it's richly deserved.

I feel I should point out, however, that Glenn does a lot of charity work too, but because he is more 'quiet' about it he doesn't receive these honours.

I agree, every one of the Eagles have been very generous with their time and talents to benefit many different causes.

I think this is a great honor for Don. One of the best things that Don has done for the charities he works with is to lend his name to give them the visibility they need. The more the public knows about something like Walden Woods, the more money will be raised. I can't think of anyone more deserving.

While I think I think it is admirable to sometimes be a 'quiet' giver, I sometimes wish Glenn would use the same approach to bring more visibility to his causes.

You know, Dana, you didn't get to see Don this year and I didn't get to see Timothy. The Glenn and Joe fans had their fix this summer and most everyone else saw the shows in England. I've been thinking about MusiCares ceremony and how likely it is that Timothy will be there. Given our plight, don't you think we really deserve that VIP package?

Yesterday I've heard Calling Me the first time. I loooooove that song. IMO it would be a perfect Eagles song. While listened to it I imagine everyone of the guys sings one verse and they do the refrain together.

But I have to say Kenny and Don sound great together.

The MusiCares site finally posted a press release listing performers and attendees for Don's ceremony tomorrow night. So far, the list includes:
Tony Bennett, The Dixie Chicks, Bruce Hornsby, John Mayer, Keb Mo, Sam Moore, Timothy B. Schmit, Trisha Yearwood, Garth Brooks, Seal, Natalie Cole, Brian Wilson and Jackson Browne.

The live auction features a hand-signed "Don Henley inspired" Chevy Tahoe (undoubtedly a sponsor tie-in) stocked with all Eagles recordings, all of Don's recordings, and get this:

A GOLD TICKET allowing the bearer plus a guest admittance to ALL Eagles 2007-08 concert tour dates.

Talk about a Gold Ticket! ALL TOUR DATES.
That sounds fantastic to me!

Now, where is that extra million dollars when I really need it?

and it means the Eagles WILL be touring this year! 8) :band:

That's exactly what I thought, TF--that means the Eagles will definitely be touring in 2007-08!

Don & Timothy have always been close, so I am really glad he will be at Don's ceremony. I must admit that I thought ALL the Eagles would be there (even though Glenn is very busy at Pebble Beach, I know)--but I hope they still will surprise everyone & show up.

I can't wait to hear all about the ceremony tomorrow night, and hopefully to buy the DVD later, of course!

Freypower

Surely this is talking about the people who will be performing songs rather than people who will be there? I think each artist will perform one or two songs. They won't list people like the other Eagles who will just be in attendance - but really, if Glenn is there, I will be pleasantly surprised. This assumption that he will be there I don't believe is very fair to him. I have said that he does not attend functions like this, no matter who it's for.

Writing that Glenn was "out playing golf somewhere" makes it sound like he just decided to wander to a club and play a few holes instead of come to the gala. Hello, Pebble Beach is pretty much the most prestigious pro-am there is and it's not as if Glenn had a choice as to when it was scheduled. With an early tee time on Saturday, it's not surprising that Glenn didn't want to fly to LA knowing that he wouldn't get back to Monterey until late.

I hate it when writers just HAVE to find something negative to say. That article was complementary of Don, but they just had to get that one little dig in about "where were the other Eagles?"

Exactly. And we were exhausted. Imagine how much more so he would have been. Also, as lovely as it is that Don was given this much-deserved honor, the MusiCares award is not like a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys or Time Magazine's Man of the Year. I don't mean to minimize it or anything - it's still a great honor.

Some really nice quotes about Don from Bernie Taupin, Elton John's longtime collaborator, at MusiCares:

Taupin, a songwriter's songwriter, eloquently described Henley's unique gift. "You need to understand something: songwriters are basically a seething mass of respect and jealousy," Taupin said. "Don is someone I admire tremendously. But more importantly, he's written so many things that I wished I had.. My envy knows no bounds."

After reading a few of Henley's lyrics, Taupin said, "Come on, that's like William Faulkner. In fact, I've always liked the way Don seems to put a literary slant on much of his work. He can get romantic like F. Scott Fitzgerald, and then back when he was doing 'Desperado,' he was Zane Grey. In a word it is wonderful, intelligent and melodic.

"Unfortunately when much of the music business has become a bit like 'Logan's Run,'—you know, that thing where you obtain a certain age and zap, you're gone? Fortunately great songs never die and well outlast disposable culture. So instead of being relegated to the trashcan of irrelevance, words like yours will inspire our kids for generations to come.

"The Eagles always were for me the other side of the California myth. The Beach Boys had the beach and the ocean, but the Eagles owned the canyon and desert. What a canvas and how well Don painted on it."

Later, Henley returned Taupin's respect. "Back at you, my brother. I wish I had your catalog. I could quit tomorrow."

I guess when you spread your love around as much as these guys did, a love child here and there isn't so surprising! It is surprising, though, that after keeping her under wraps for so long he decided to "out" her, even giving her name out with press in the room. I think it's cool that he's publicly acknowledging her, though. And what a great way to do it, at an event such as this one.

Re: Frontline - Stevie Nicks actually mentions them resentfully in one of her songs, although she's apparently mended fences. At one point they told her she needed to lose weight and go into rehab. This did not make Stevie smile. lol

More MusiCares/Grammy press--from the Sun-Star.com:
--------------------------------------------

Towards the end of the evening the Grammys laid on their usual tribute and, as usual, fluffed it. They who suffered the fluff this year were the Eagles, one of the best live bands around at the time, and woe, woe, woe, Don Henley, Eagles drummer and leader, was in the audience.

The chief culprits were country band Rascal Flatts who served up Hotel California and Life in the Fast Lane with about as much zest as -- well, with no zest at all. It was awful. A disgrace. The camera, noticeably, didn't dare pan over to Don Henley who was probably weeping.

Biggest treats of the night came from more oldies -- a song each from Lionel Ritchie and Smoky Robinson (who is in his late sixties) and a reformed Police performing that wonderful screamer Roxanne. See -- age and quality.
-------------------------------------------

I agree--Sting and Don may have a little age on them, but they are still looking GOOD, and OH, the quality! 8)

The DelCo Times has a similar sentiment - see full article here (http://thechroniclesofmc.blogspot.com/2007/02/grammy-wrap-up.html). An excerpt:

"Inexplicably, with the recent death of James Brown, the Recording Academy decided to launch a massive tribute -- to The Eagles.Yes, that band of 70s excess, massive egos and pink champagne on ice were paid homage with three of its songs performed by Rascal Flatts and Carrie Underwood. Hearing "Hotel California" (right up there with ‘Stairway to Heaven" as songs to never be played again -- by anyone), "Desperado" (see "Hotel California"), and "Life in the Fast Lane" had me wondering if Glenn Frey had died."

Oh my!

Now - I have a confession to make. My two teenage nieces love Rascal Flatts and they played in Charlottesville, Va. on Feb. 16th. When the date was announced, my sister and I promised to take them to the show, even though I didn't know one single song that they sing. (Who says I'm not a good aunt? ) Anyway, there I am at the show not recognizing not one single song until they break into Hotel California. I have to tell you - I was so excited, I enjoyed it immensely at the time. Plus they said some nice things about how our guys had been such a big influence on them. I have to admit, it doesn't sound nearly as good in that YouTube video.

In fairness, they actually put on a pretty good show, and there are even a few songs that I liked in spite of the lead singer's (Gary) whiny voice. Plus, Joe Don the guitar player is pretty hot. I learned that he even posed for a nude butt shot in one of their videoes. (That reminds me, I was supposed to check that out since I've never seen the video.) If I can find it, I'll post a link.

Edited to add: I found it and posted a link to the video over in Cheap Talk and Wine. I didn't want to hijack Don's thread with Joe Don's derriere.

I'm actually a big fan of Rascal Flatts and love Gary's voice..........just not on those particular performances

Although I do have to say, I didn't think LITFL as anywhere NEAR as bad as HC. I think the biggest problem was that Gary's voice just doesn't fit the song. He doesn't have that rasp voice full of emotion like Don. He has more of a high-pitched pop country voice and they just didn't fit well.

I still think carrie did good though :)

All in all, I think that they definently could have picked people more suited for the songs. If you're going to go country, pick somebody like Travis Tritt who performs the country rock style similar to the eagles.

These are excerpts from an MSN Blog by Junichi Semitsu, an assistant to the Dixie Chicks, about the night they paid tribute to Don at his MusiCares Ceremony. While it is interesting in itself for the behind-the-scenes glimpses it provides of this wonderful ceremony, the next-to-last-paragraph made me go  :
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Backstage at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Natalie, Martie, and Emily reunite for the first time since the Accidents and Accusations Tour ended ten weeks ago, in early December.

They are coordinating harmony parts to “Desperado.” The Chicks are rehearsing for a tribute tomorrow to Don Henley, who is being honored as the MusiCares Person of the Year, which is awarded to musicians who also dedicate their lives to philanthropic efforts. The Chicks are one of many acts, including John Mayer, Trisha Yearwood, Sam Moore, and Michael McDonald, who are performing either an Eagles or Henley tune.

So while Seal is practicing on stage with Don Henley’s band, the Chicks sort out the notes for each person’s “Ooohs” and “Aaaahs” in a backstage warehouse. They agree to avoid harmonies that ooze cheese or anything reminiscent of a barbershop quartet. While Emily works out the chord changes on her dobro, Natalie pushes for a key change to C.

I have probably had anxiety dreams that involved something similar to suddenly having to arrange vocal parts in a different key, to perform with a brand new band, for a performance only 24 hours away, in front of the entire recording academy. But Martie, Emily, and Natalie, ever the consummate professionals, are relaxed as can be. That’s why they’re nominated for five Grammy Awards and you and I are not.

When the Chicks take the stage for the rehearsal, Natalie talks with Seal, who is almost twice her height. They trade notes on their children, like two parents in line at your local grocery store, assuming your grocery is filled with supermodels, famous actors, and superstar musicians.

As the Chicks coordinate with the band, I am holding on to their purses. Their managers joke that I’m back to my old “Man Ass” job, although I insist I should be promoted to “Vice President of Personal Possession Relocations.”

After thirty short minutes of coordinating every ritardando and agreeing upon whether a certain chord should be a minor 7th or a major 7th, the Chicks have locked up “Desperado” as if they own it.

The next afternoon, on the day of the Henley tribute, the Chicks are getting ready in a local hotel suite. As I’ve seen this process almost fifty times now, I was expecting nothing out of the ordinary. But today’s glam ritual proves to be more unusual.

The Chicks have no electricity. Each time they attempt to power on Dean’s make-up lights, the steamer, the curling iron, and other mysterious beauty instruments indistinguishable from torture devices, a fuse gets blown. Consequently, when any of us needs to use the restroom, we use the light from our cell phones to make our way to the toilet.

Eventually, hotel management runs an extension cord to the adjacent room, which proves to be a fine working solution until the occupant of the room returns. Fortunately, glam is nearly finished, so nobody needs to ask the guest if the Dixie Chicks can borrow some of his juice.

When the Chicks arrive at the event, they rapidly snake their way through an ocean of tables to find theirs. Between Mindi, management, security, and me, we manage to make sure that nobody stops the girls for autographs, performance requests, or polenta recipes.

Already sitting at the table is Gareth Maguire (Martie’s husband), Adrian Pasdar (Natalie’s husband), and Dan Wilson, formerly of Semisonic, who co-wrote “Not Ready to Make Nice” with the Chicks.

I am quite thrilled to find that the Chicks and their management have found a seat for me at the Chicks’ table. Each table, by the way, costs $75,000 for ten seats, which means this $7,500 meal is easily the most expensive I will ever consume, unless I live out my dream of eating a bowl of Lucky Charms with actual blue diamonds.

The conversation is interrupted when tonight’s honoree, Don Henley, walks to the table to thank the Chicks for performing. He confesses that he’s a bit under the weather, setting everyone up to be disappointed with his musical performance.

Just as they finish congratulating him, Carnie Wilson of Wilson Phillips walks up to gush about how much she loves the Chicks’ new album. After Carnie leaves, Natalie comments on how incredibly nice she is. I add, “Yeah, I like Wilson Phillips. Of all the white all-female trios in music history, they’re the only good one.” Natalie gives me a dirty look.

When the Chicks take the stage, they nail “Desperado,” as if it’s a standard they’ve been performing for years. The audience begins cheering even before Natalie finishes singing the last line.

At the end of the night, Don Henley takes the stage to accept his award. After admitting that he feels like he’s attending his own funeral, he thanks the performers, who helped him “actually start liking some of these songs again.”

He then asks everyone to sing “Happy Birthday” to William, his nine year-old son. Not surprising for a ballroom full of musical artists, the group sing-a-long sounds good. Natalie’s voice, however, seems to rise above all others.

Finally, after changing the tone with some brutal jokes at the expense of record executives, Don closes the night by singing “Boys of Summer,” “Wasted Time,” “Life in the Fast Lane,” and “Hotel California,” which, no surprise, ends up the highlight of the night. Martie notes how incredible his voice sounds, especially when considering his illness.

Sadly, this event is only being videotaped for archives, and not for eventual television or web broadcast. Most likely, nobody else will ever hear Emily’s dobro solo, Martie’s fiddle solo, or Natalie wailing “...before it’s too late.”

But for those privileged to have witnessed this event, the $75,000 per-table cost almost seems justified.
--------------------------------------------------------

"Sadly, this event is only being videotaped for archives"?? Say it ain't so!! :weep:

Our wishes may be granted, over three years later! According to Variety (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118014406.html?categoryId=1293&cs=1), a DVD release of Don's MusiCares is "being negotiated." Here's hoping!

 Oh, I hope this happens. I would absolutely LOVE to see this on dvd. I've always wondered what Don's songs sound like done by those artists that were there. Plus, getting to hear Don's speech would great. It'd also be great to see more than just the pictures from this event.

I read that too! After three years I had completely given up. Of course, I will believe it when I finally see it. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Along those same lines, I watched the Grammys with my daughter and I was surprised that this year's MusiCares honoree did not even appear. At least Don was allowed a brief appearance the year he was honored.

Well - I thought I'd revive this thread since today is the 4th anniversary of Don's celebration of being named "MusiCares Person of the Year". Some of the newer folks here may be interested. It also reminded me that there was talk of releasing a DVD of the ceremony, but I guess there's no new word on that. Sure would be cool if they did.

Wow, 4 years already? My, how time flies. I'd love to see a DVD of it but it becomes less likely with every year that passes. Still, you never know!

I know it's late in the day, but I think it is worth reviving this thread to recognize that today is the 8th anniversary of Don being honored as the 2006 MusiCares Person of the Year. I was really in hopes that one day the ceremony would be released on DVD, but I'm loosing faith at this point.

I have just found this about Springsteen's MusiCares tribute coming out on BluRay. So they could have released Don's & any others if they wished. But of course, if Spingsteen breathes, it gets released. I thought people would be interested to know that it could happen in theory, but I guess it is too long now since the event. :eyebrow:

Happy 10th Anniversary of Don being named MusiCares Person of the Year. I can't believe its been 10 years now and then Don is honoring Tom Petty tomorrow night. A day after his 10th anniversary of being named MusiCares Person of The Year. I wonder what song Don will sing and he'll be seeing Stevie at the event.

Here's are 28 pages worth of pictures from 2007. Everybody was there that night to pay tribute to Don.
