Had such an awesome time tonight especially meeting you lovely ladies and gentleman! My first Glenn show was a doozy - I got a direct look and a guitar pick. I'm sure I'll elaborate when I'm more coherent.

For those that were curious, Borderers at this concert included Soda, Dreamer, PLS, myself, PrayForDayLight, JustAHiredHand, TiffanyTwisted, and a few 'lurkers' who read our board (you know who you are). It was fantastic to meet everyone!

I can't deal with Photobucket tonight, so that will have to wait until I get home tomorrow, we should have lots of pictures from tonight!

Glenn was his usual awesome self, and the audience was much more engaged. It wasn't a formal place, and there was a stage rush towards the end.

I said it at the end of the first show at Town Hall, and as this is the last I'll be going to until he announces new ones () I'll say it again. Mr. Frey is a very talented man, and I am in awe of his abilities, his versatility, the wonderful way he interacts with an audience, and the passion he brings to everything he sings.

Here's a pic to hold us until more can be posted.

I'm do glad you all had another wonderful night. Of course I'm waiting for the 'real' reviews (ie the Border Rebiews). But this came in on a google alert this morning. It's v positive if short. And some nice pictures as well.

I'm back home, it was a good trip home with nice weather. I can't believe that I put over 1200 miles on my car in one week!

I haven't looked, but there might be videos on YouTube, quite a few seemed to be recording and security didn't seem to care. I saw mostly cell phones being used, so I imagine the quality isn't all that good.

I feel it's past time to pay some homage to the excellent group of musicians that are part of the show. They do an excellent job, that's for sure! Unfortunately, I never really saw more than Michael's forehead, since the piano hides him almost completely during the show. Then as they left the stage I was too busy waving at him to take a picture. As well, all the pictures of Scott and Doug (the steel guitar player) didn't turn out well enough to post. All my pics of Richard include Glenn, and I've posted the pics of Will elsewhere.

This is Tom, the man of many instruments:

Those are superb. They just get better & better.

I have no idea whether I will be able to do the same. My camera doesn't have the extraordinary zoom lens that these do & I am not taking my new mobile phone.

Verna, In this photo it looks like Will has his glasses on - but not in the other photos. Can you remember if he put them on part way through the show? :hmm: I know he wears glasses, but have never seen him wear them on stage. I assume he usually wears contact lenses.

It's always a bit sad when you come to the last show in your trip, but what a time you've had! :yay: You've met lots of Borderers, and seen some truly awesome shows, and now you have all those memories.

Thanks for all the lovely photos you've shared with us, and a special thank you for the beautiful photos of Will.

It's a pity there were empty seats at the shows. I'd love Glenn to bring this show to the UK. We're really suffering the effects of the recession here at the moment though, so he would need to keep ticket prices reasonable.

Steph, I remember seeing him with the glasses on and being surprised. Later I remember them being off. It made me wonder why he'd need glasses sometimes and not all times. If he were reading something, I'd think it might be the lighting (I need reading glasses in low light, even with the mono-vision contacts). He didn't look like he was reading anything, but he plays keyboards and there's a lot of labels on those. I really have no idea, I'm guessing here.

I did get to meet lots of other Borderers and that was great! Even met a few who've never joined but read the site for news and info. But May was a totally awesome month for me, and it's not finished yet. The Eagles concerts in Atlanta seem like months ago, but I still have the Timothy show downtown on Memorial Day, and even the Alan Jackson show tomorrow.

It's not a good zoom! It's called sitting-in-the-first-few-rows. I haven't a prayer of getting good pics at Joe's show here in August. Anyway, Thursday night at Englewood is when I really learned to use the camera, nothing like waiting til the road trip was near the end.

But I was in the front row for the Eagles in December 2010 & I got no big closeups like that. My LA guidebook tells me the sightlines at the Wiltern are good, but let's 'wait & see'.

OK, I'll give you that. I just bought this camera last fall and the zooms have gotten better as time goes on.

I want to mention to everyone that if last night's show wasn't sold out it was nearly so. Same for Thursday's show in NJ. I know tomorrow's show is nearly sold out. I wish he had more lined up, since he's gained the momentum. Well...OK...that's not really the reason I wish he had more lined up ;).

He is getting better. Most of it, since vocally he was astounding at the first show, is that he's a lot more comfortable. It is so obvious that he's enjoying himself, and that always makes everything better.

Glenn Frey

The Sands Hotel & Casino Event Center

May 18, 2012

To date I have seen Don Henley and Joe Walsh in solo performances. When I heard Glenn Frey was appearing at the Sands it was a no brainer. Despite the word of the concert coming late to the Philadelphia market, I was able to pick up a couple of pretty decent tickets.

The venue itself is a little unusual. It is a renovated steel mill that has been turned into a casino and hotel. The theater lacks the acoustic properties of a theater like the Borgata’s Event Center, Atlantic City. It has a bare concrete floor and masonry walls, and plastic folding chairs that are banded together. Yet it had the appeal of uniqueness due to its origins as a steel mill.

The show was scheduled to begin at 8 PM. However Mr. Frey decided to be “fashionably late”.

At about 8:20, the crowd began to become a little restless and there were some chants in unison directed at the stage. Finally at 8:23 the lights went down and the band members, all dressed in suits and ties, took the stage to an approving round of applause from the audience. About a minute later Glenn walked on stage and the applause grew in intensity and duration.

The concert started off with three of the Eagle’s standards, “Peaceful Easy Feeling”, “Tequila Sunrise” and “Lying’ Eyes”. Being the master show man that he is, Glenn really knew how to appeal to this audience. He informed the crowd that his father was originally from Nazareth, PA, the next town north of Bethlehem. He informed the assembled multitude that his aunt and some other relatives were in attendance at tonight’s show, which elicited an excited round of applause. As he sang the first three songs he related the songs were written by Jack Tempchin and Don Henley. At the mention of Henley’s name the crowd broke into applause to which Mr. Frey observed, “It pays to surround yourself with talent.”

Upon conclusion of ‘Eyes”, Glenn stepped up to the mic and talked about his new album. He said it was his first solo album in 19 years and for him it was a departure from his country rock roots. He described it as a collection of love songs and standards. He then began to perform “Route 66”, one of the songs on the new album, putting aside his guitar and stepping up to the microphone in the style of a “swinging” singer.

His next two offerings were also from the new album and included “For Sentimental Reasons”, and as Glenn described the 1967 song “The Shadow of Your Smile”, the theme song from the movie “The Sandpiper” written by Johnny Mandel and Paul Francis Webster. He further went on to note the song won a Grammy and an Academy Award.

As the applause from the performance died down, he introduced his next selection as a song written by Randy Newman about a hooker and her pimp called “Same Girl.”

As the applause subsided from this number, Glenn announced his next song as a Brian Wilson song entitled “Caroline, No”. This offering complete, he announced his next song would be another 1967 hit, “The Look of Love.” He described how the song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David
for the James Bond Movie, “Casino Royale”.

He next proceeded to perform the Ray Charles song, “Worried Mind”. At the conclusion of this song he joked that he should have entitled the next song “Prelude to Obscurity”. He seemed stunned when the crowd did not respond to the joke. He explained the joke and confessed his surprise at its bombing to which the crowd responded with a round of faux applause.

The matter of the bombed joke being settled, he performed “The One You Love”.

As the applause subsided Glenn started to tell the story of what he was trying to accomplish with his new album. He told of how he wanted to make an album filled with “standards and love songs.” He related how he discussed his dilemma with song writing partner, Jack Tempchin. He was surprised at Tempchin’s answer, “Why not use one we already wrote?” That was when he decided to use the song “After Hours “, which went on to become the album’s title.

As surprising as Glenn’s departure from his country rock roots was, the surprises were just beginning. He related a conversation he had had with piano player Michael Thompson about the need to freshen some things up to which Mr. Thompson asked, “Why not change the arrangement?” they then went on to perform “The Heat is On”, but it was a very jazzy version. I think it is safe to say it kicked ass! It was so good I am surprised they did not include it on the new album.

The surprises continued with an even jazzier version of “Smuggler’s Blues”. Like the previous song, this one also kicked ass and the new arrangement would have been great to include on the new album. I am going to guess that Glenn wanted to stay with the nostalgic theme as the graphic on the CD makes it look like a vinyl record, so he avoided including the reworked Frey classics.

At the conclusion of “Smuggler’s Blues”, Glenn began to tell the story about how he once tried to get out of his contract with MCA records which he referred to as “Music Cemetery of America”. He told of how the company was so bad, “They would have blown the Beatles.”

Next up was the song “Who’s Been Sleeping in My Bed”, another Frey classic, this one written by Jack Tempchin and Bobby Whitlock, whom Glenn noted was a former member of Derek and the Dominos.

As the applause subsided from “Sleeping” Mr. Frey and his band moved into a performance of “You Belong to the City”, one of my personal favorites. By this time ever one was on their feet. As the song concluded, the band left the stage at 9:42 PM to a thunderous ovation, only to return again at 9:45.
For the encore Glenn first performed “Take it to the Limit” which had a large part of the crowd singing along. Then came the surprise of the night.

Glenn performed “Desperado”, a song that for all these years I thought was written exclusively for Don Henley. His performance was every bit as good as any the Henley had ever done, and what is probably the biggest tribute any audience can pay to a performer, they were loudly singing along. It was something to both see and hear.

Upon its conclusion once again Mr. Frey and his band left the stage to a thunderous ovation. The crowd was really excited and stoked. Apparently Glenn heard it off stage and returned for a second encore. As the band took to the stage, the center aisle in front began to fil up. He performed the Eagles classics “Already Gone “and “Take it Easy”, making their final exit from the stage at 11:02 PM.

As concerts go this one was great. The sound was a little low at the beginning, but by the third song the crew had it perfect. Glenn Frey is a master showman and his comfort in front of an audience shines through. This show spoke volumes as to the individual talent that makes the Eagles so great. In 2 weeks TBS!

TT and I met up with these other lovely ladies from the Border for some refreshment after the show. A splendid time was had by all. As soon as I download my camera I will post a few pictures now that Nancy has taught me how to do it.
Tiffany Twisted and I will be attending the Timothy B.Schmit show at the KeswicK Theater in Glenside, PA, on May 31, 2012. I will post a review of that show.

A short article that summarizes who Glenn is, and not what he did during the concert. However, there are some good pictures.

This is from Lehigh Valley Music's review of the venue (not the performances). See, I KNEW the weird echo wasn't in my imagination!

The sound: We raved about the event center’s sound after the Incubus show, which had rock volume. But for the quieter show by The Beach Boys on Thursday, there was a distinct echo from the back of the room. And for the even more nuanced show by Glenn Frey on Friday, it occasionally was annoying.
Co-owner Jerry Deifer Jr. said officials noticed it, too: It was coming from the flat front of the balcony where a scrolling sign was planned by had not been put in. By Saturday’s Alan Jackson show, a heavy black curtain hung on the balcony and the echo had disappeared.
"We are adjusting the minor fixes that come with new facilities to ensure the best quality of entertainment possible,” Deifer said. “Adjustments are being done immediately.”

Glenn Frey
May 18, 2012
Sands Event Center, Bethlehem, PA

Getting these tickets happened by chance .Tuesday, on the way to work, I heard about Glenn Frey appearing in the area. I caught John Debella’s interview of Glenn on a local radio station. JAHH has since posted the interview elsewhere on the Border.

I originally thought it was for a local golf outing. I was surprised to learn it was a concert at the newly opened event Center at the Sands Casino in Bethlehem, PA .My second surprise was Just Another Hired Hand calling me at work to tell me he got tickets. He knows I have loved Glenn Frey since I was fourteen years old (many moons ago).

As we traveled to the show we discussed what he might perform as we listened to Farewell I, Live from Melbourne, in the car. The third and greatest surprise was Glenn changing it up, and how he turned some classics and the new songs into a terrific show.

Glenn was happy to be in the area as his father’s sister lives here. He had a lot of family in the audience and was happy to be performing for them and the rest of us.

He opened with some Eagles songs everyone knew, and then eased into a multitude of songs from his new album explaining each song as he introduced it. I found it interesting that you could have heard a pin drop as he sang each new song. The people were captivated by the man and his music.

The audience warmly responded to his songs and his jokes (although one bombed). I felt as he talked and explained the background for his song choices from his new album, he was talking to each of us one on one.

I especially enjoyed the new jazzier version of “The Heat Is On” (one of my favorite songs).I was also excited when he did “Whose Been Sleeping In My Bed”. Bottom line I am an Eagles fan but I love Glenn, and his music.

This show was my birthday gift from JAHH. After the show it was super cool to spend time with Sodascouts, Dreamer, Va is for Eagles Lovers and other boarder members. This is the second time we have met up after a show. We were all together in AC for Joe Walsh when he appeared at the Borgata with BB King. JAHH and I celebrated our wedding anniversary when we attended this show.

All I have to say is bling may be fabulous as a gift but nothing tops the wonderful memories and the time spent with JAHH and our Border friends. This was one of the best birthdays ever.

Thanks JAHH and Glenn for making my birthday memorable.

TT, I didn't get to talk to you much as we were on opposite ends of the table, but it was great to meet both you and JAHH! I agree about it being a great birthday present and the great memories...
